GREAT TUNE, easily one of their Top 10. TRUE STORY: Listen to the words carefully, about a chemist that created a pure form of Acid, and sold it to Rich Folks, till he got caught.
The main character, Owsley Stanley, was the sound tech for the Grateful Dead, but also made the best, most pure LSD around in the 60s. Eventually, LSD fell out of favor, and cocaine became the drug of choice in the 70s (you are obsolete, can't you see the white men (cocaine dealers) on the street?). He was running from the cops and ran out of gas. What a crazy subject for song. But that's the Dan. Larry Carlton's guitar work on this song is considered some of the best ever by anyone. He doesn't follow any of the rules of lead scales or chords, but came up with that incredibly unique solo and outro that are totally unpredictable, but work.
I cannot tell you how gratifying it is to see an intelligent young guy finding joy in tracks like these. This is real music Mason! Donald Fagen and Walter Becker co-wrote everything and they both play on this song. Basically, they never miss. And the only way the other dudes get invited to their party is if they are top-tier musicians. I am like you, not musically trained. But we have a good ear for quality. Esteemed musicologists have written essays on just the first guitar solo alone in this track. Apparently, it is a masterclass on how to compose a guitar solo. I have to mention the drummer Bernard Purdie. He has such a fluid style which suits the rhythmic style that you often hear with Steely Dan. This is the album opener to the album The Royal Scam! ❤🔥
An amazing song. Green Earrings is another from this album that's a must hear. Other Dan songs to check out: FM, Black Cow, Josie, Hey Nineteen, Babylon Sisters, Peg, My Rival, Gaucho, Dr. Wu, Rikki Don't Lose That Number, Monkey in Your Soul... I can go on and on. Their catalog is very deep and it's all excellent!
Wow I requested this alot, last time on your community page! Im really surprised you chose it, as other great songs were requested. So glad that you like it! Steely Dan doesn't ever disappoint. Such class and style not to mention unworldly talent! Some rapper sampled this, apparently rappers sample much of the music from back then. Please do "Children Of The Sun" I admit that it's not for everyone but it was so fresh and astounding when it came out in the late 70s.
Donald Fay-gan. Please keep diving into Steely Dan; it's a huge catalog! Would love for you to add "Time Out Of Mind" to your list for future SD reactions. Thanks for another great reaction and analysis! ✌💙✌
Man, lot's of Steely Dan left for you to experience. A few of my favorites - "Chain Lightning", "Peg", "Bodhisattva", "Black Friday", "My Old School", "Show Biz Kids", ... whatever you choose you can't go wrong. Enjoy!
I'm one of the people who suggested this, let's see if you dig it. The song is based on legendary LSD maker/ dealer Owsley Stanley, who was also the sound guy for the Grateful Dead.
You can't tell me Vince Gilligan didn't channel this song when he was creating Breaking Bad, almost every line mirrors some aspect of BB right down to the motor home
@@roberormonde Ha! That made me laugh. I couldn't rap to save my life. I play music and grew up in the 60's 70's. Jazz never appealed to me though I love S-Dan's "Reelin in the years" and "Do it again." I say "too many notes" as a joke in hearing Jazz music. "Is there gas in the car? Yes, there's gas in the car..." 🤣😂

Yeah, got caught because his car ran out of gas

Owsley was also a member of the Merry Pranksters who toured around in a psychedelic painted bus (technicolor motorhome) passing out LSD
Larry Carlton on the guitar 🔥
You mispelled god. lol
Sophisticated music for sophisticated music lovers. SD, the thinking person's band, welcome.
Currently my favorite Steely Dan song. So glad you listened

Or "Josie" great riff and that BASS is kick ass! Heck, do the entire Aja album!
Now this is a great band and song.
Little jazz Little funk, love me some Steely Dan. Saw them live in Virginia Beach in the 90s
RIP Walter Becker, a truly nice and generous man. Also, Donald FAY-gun is the pronunciation.
Song is about one of biggest dope dealers in California back in the day and his fall from power. Mostly LSD
this song and The Royal Scam are my favorite SD songs
There we go!!!
It gets better the more you hear it
Rikki dont loose that number is one you should react to.. one of the early hits
Genius has entered the room......

Charlemagne is pronounced shaar luh mayn! Just like the emperor! Great song, love Steely Dan!
"Is there gas in the car?.....Yes there's gas in the car." Haitian Divorce is another Steely Dan song. Don't sleep on Don Felder's solo stuff.
Great song by SD. The Caves of Altamira should be next 😎
Yep
I truly believe one of the most beautiful songs ever written
🙋🏿♀️ May I suggest 'Peg' next! 🤗 Glad you like SD. 🥰🐰

Lol. So did Kanye.
I would love for you to check out The Guess Who. No sugar/ New mother nature ❤Peace out
D, allman bros in memory of Elizabeth Reed at the fillmore!
Your favorite part there Kanye West samples in "Champion" on Graduation.
You can't tell me Vince Gilligan didn't channel this song when he was creating Breaking Bad, almost every line mirrors some aspect of BB right down to the motor home
✨🎼🎹🎶🥁🎸🎤❤️🎤🎸🥁🎶🎹🎼✨ ✨Great Reaction & Analogy❕Vision’s of “Breaking Bad”❕✨🫶🏼✨
You probably already know that Kanye sampled this
Nice review. Welcome to the rabbit hole. Check out Peg and or Green Earings. Then go deep :)
Making free base or some other good time?
Kayne West sampled this song.
Bro doesn’t listen to Ye 😞
Too many notes 🤔🤭
I guess you're not used to too many notes your used to simple repetitive rap
