My favorite! Such a fascinating back story! Love the line “Is there gas in the car? Yes, there’s gas in the caaaar.” ☮️❤️😎
That’s how Owsley got caught. Ran out of gas.
Larry Carlton KILLS IT on the guitar soloing.
The song is about famed acid dealer Stanley Owsley who hung with the Dead and other bands and provided the LSD. He was the acid star in the 60s and early 70s. But as the 70s rolled on, acid was out and coke was in. "You were obsolete, look at all the white men on the street", the white men metaphorically referring to coke dealers. After being on the run for years, he finally got caught when, you guessed it, he ran out of gas and makes the line "Is there gas in the car" especially poignant.
Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test
Plausible. Like "Revelation"
First off…great song! What a groove! And THAT BASS!!
Yes this is about Owsley Stanley…and yes he produced MUCH of the acid that was going around in the 60s…he basically supplied the counter culture, but he was so much more than a drug dealer. Full blown sound addict…was sound engineer, taper, benefactor for the grateful dead. Designed their ‘wall of sound’ system. The guy was just insane….lived on a KETO diet 40 years before it was even invented….believed that fruits and vegetables would kill you. There are just so many levels to his story….
Owsley ‘Bear’ Stanley, the original dancing bear, rest in peace 🙏
You can never go wrong with steely Dan. This is always been one of my faves.
My old school is another one
Night by Night hits the feels for me but really,it’s impossible to pick a favourite, there are SO MANY in their extraordinary catalogue.
"Any Major Dude Will Tell You".... that's a killer song..!
@@TheCornishCockney Great song, I request it often... (other reactors)
Steely Dan has that magic: a fusion of a funk rhythm and jazz harmonies mixed with rock and roll instrumentals and a unique lyrical style. The guitar solo by jazz fusion master Larry Carlton is fantastic. Thanks, Biz, for always making that 3 point shot - nothing but net.
The Royal Scam is a killer album. Sign in Stranger and The Royal Scam are just two of the great songs on the album.
You can't go wrong with Steely Dan. This song is basically about an LSD dealer.
He was a maker of LSD! Very high grade LSD!
And he was the grateful deads sound guy!
@@mrcody1924
From what I understand, Garcia was known to have the most potent acid. Carlos Santana mentioned that in an interview about Woodstock.
No, it’s about the GREATEST sound engineer & chemist from the ‘60s, Owsley “Bear” Stanley, the inventor of the Wall of Sound sound system used by the Grateful Dead in the early ‘70s & creator of the dual mic system that eliminated feedback on the vocal mic, & purveyor of the best LSD ever produced. He also created the Steal Your Face & Marching (not Dancing) Bear logos for the Grateful Dead. Get ALL the facts!✌️❤️🎶
A very well known infamous dealer!
This whole album is a 10/10. I promise you wont be disappointed with any of the songs. Top class songwriting and production all round
About Owsley Augustus "Bear" Stanley III. King of acid production on the west coast back in the day.
Funny how EVERYONE stays with the fade out of a Dan song, you might miss something or you just want it to go on longer.
My favourite band among so many favourites from those 3 wonderful decades,60’s,70’s and 80’s.
Steely Dan one of my favs as a youngster.
One of the best guitar solos ever recorded in my opinion.
Who did it ? Larry Carlton?
Make that 2 of the greatest solos.
@@allenlocke1935 You got it, one of his best. Also love his solo at the beginning of Don't Take Me Alive.
@@allenlocke1935 Yep!
@@johnspinelli6170 Good call, that outro solo kicks ass as well!
Steely Dan, your favorite bands favorite band🔥🤘✌
try their song Green Earrings off this same album
I love how they highlight the fantastic drumming by Bernard Purdy
Really one of most unique bands. Fire 🔥 musicians
Black Friday, My Old School and this song my favorites.
Steely Dan is in my 58 year old DNA, and this is jam is my favorite. Larry Carlton is the shredmaster on guitar.
BMan...watching you move ...you OBVIOUSLY GET THEIR MUSIC 😊
All the best to you and yours PAB
Another great song by Steely Dan!
My two favorite bands are the Beatles and Steely Dan.
Mine to!
💯 Steely Dan's got a funky vibe that grabs you‼🔥
It's been a while since I heard "Kid Charlemagne" & I REALLY dug it‼Thanks Biz‼ ☮ ❤ 🎶
old hippie here, had Owsley's amazing products many times and yes, it was the best. This was mid-1970's. They were crazy days back then, just like on TV only more colorful! We need another Summer Of Love...
This song is about Owsley "Bear" Stanley, the chemist and sound engineer for the Grateful Dead. He also designed the Stealie with Bob Thomas, and helped design their Wall of Sound.
Sweet! "Kid Charlemagne" ruled the radio for a time back in 1976, at least, I remember hearing it on the radio when I was a kid often enough to mistake some of the lyrics. I had no idea back then that it was a story about an actual person, Owsley Stanley, and not some made up character on the run and making a get-away -- "Is there gas in the car \ Yes, there's gas in the car" ... Owsley Stanley was the soundman for the Grateful Dead who became more famous for cooking the best acid or at least the most acid during the 1960's -- more than 5 million doses in two years reportedly.
Deacon Blue, My Old School, FM. All great as well, but, really, it's hard to go wrong with any of them.
My new trend. Biz Man,whenever im sitting and listening to some of my favs,if i catch u w a reaction,i do the reaction, ratherrhN just listening....Love you man...keepup the Great work..zGod Bless Peace
this is da good stuff right here!
This has to be my favorite Steely Dan song ❤️......... it's a groove ✌️
Yep
Impossible to only have ONE favourite from this perfection of a band.
I have about 190.
The Royal Scam, never get tired of it.
Your favourite bands favourite band!
Deacon Blues is one you have to hear
I love waiting and seeing everyone’s face when they realize this was the sample from the Kanye song.
Larry Carlton Killing It on Guitar. This is my favorite SD Album
The lyrics....the sound...im jealous you have headphones on ❤
anyone who loves this tune is my friend great tune dude
what a fantastic song......killer bass.....drums....and that aweome guitar solo....damn!
Simply the best.
that bass line !
the song is about the dude that made all of the LSD around back then
I love the way you feel the music
They still tour. I saw them 6 years ago with The Doobie Brothers in San Francisco. Still bring it. Great show. Look up their tours dates. If you get a chance, you wouldn't regret it.
Was Walter still alive? I don't remember when he died.
Their reluctance to leave the states is a bit annoying.
As a lifelong fan,and a Brit,I was even more pissed off that they toured the UK in 2015,playing only 6 dates.
On the day of the announcement,I was on the phone to get tickets for the London show……sold out in an hour and a half, grrrrrrrrr.
But I still have my vinyl,cd and blue Ray concerts to submerge into.
Walter was passed, in was in 18 at Shoreline Amphitheater, I'm not sure who was on guitar that tour? But he did an incredible job. Doobies were a blast
Did he figure that out? Sure looks that way? Recognition! : ) Man knows the city life!
The Royal Scam is the last album by Steely Dan that was predominantly driven by great guitar work.
Yes I agree-- I've always felt it was their best album, though Aja is a damn close second!
Yo their song Don't Take Me Alive would be a great next pick for you to check out.
I think Fagen said this was supposed to be about an acid or heroin dealer. I like how you read the lyrics at the end.
Love
Steely
Dan
I see what you did there.
Haitian Divorce is quintessential Steely Dan from the same album as KC
It's my favorite jam, then comes Hey 19 and Gaucho. Not mention The Second Arrangement.
An "A Frame" was a type rich person's house in the mountains in Cali . They had his number written on the wall. Before cell phones we had to write down someone's number and keep it somewhere.
Definition of smooth , Biz .
Deeper Dive Requirement met with this group .
Just gotta say it: do their song King of the World.
the lyrics are a true story about a very famous los angeles LSD cook. everyone in so-cal bought their acid from this cat. he was like jesus, as the lyrics say.
Biz felt this one !!! ❤️🔥❤️
Show Biz Kids is another banger.
Steely Dan “Aja” ... it contains the greatest sax and drum solos...
"Damn man!"
I couldn't have said it better, Biz.
One of Larry Carlton's finest efforts
You were really close! The story is about a guy who made the finest quality LSD in the country at the time, and became a folk hero amongst acid users. Then LSD was supplanted by other drugs that caused addiction ("look at all the white men on the street") and his world fell apart. A phenomenal song, and, as usual, great musical composition by SD
Kid Charlemagne is a non fictional character who made LSD and was a legend in San Francisco.
I was 14 when this came out. Life can be long, too 😊
Yeah kid Charlemagne was making some really good acid!
Review every track on Aja, all bangers
Love this band "Aja is one of the greatest albums ever imo"
Thanks keep digging
Charlemagne is a dope dealer. A chemist to be precise. The song is about a real-life drug dealer named Augustus Owsley Stanley III, who was known for manufacturing high-quality LSD in the 1960s. The process of making LSD involves combining lysergic acid (a diamond) with ergotamine (a pearl) to create a powerful hallucinogenic substance.
Steely Dan!
The guy learned how to make LSD. It's not about cocaine.
I don't need to "chase the dragon" to get high off Steely Dan's music!
I love how you feel the music
Thank you
Show Biz Kids is really good. My Old School is a masterpiece. Josie is frikkin badass.
Stay on this Royal Scam album. Caves of Altamira should be next in the progression.
I don't listen to them everyday, but I'd go crazy without my Steely Dan albums. As much as you enjoy great music, you should probably do the second album. You're gonna miss out on some awesome music if you don't. They don't have a bad album. I suggest listening to them all, in order, that way you can hear their progression through the years.
They did another west coast drug dealer reference song called GLAMOUR PROFFESION. you may have revised that already from the GAUCHO album.
“You’d go to L.A. on a dare and you’d go it alone”
This song is dope
Turn up the Eagles the neighbors are listening!!!"Everything you did"
Bernard Purdie and Chuck Rainey on drums and bass respectively. Pockets don't get deeper.
I wish I had some of that Owsley Acid back in the Brooklyn Projects I grew up in the 1970's. Instead we had such bad shit anytime you took it you were guaranteed a Bummer or a Bad Trip.
1:24 the moment Bizmatik realizes...yup, this song was sampled :D
Yup
They were signing about trap houses before trap houses
LOVE this! Please do Katie Lied.
Eargasm....🔥
steely dan is walter becker and donald fagen, but they used THE BEST session musicians they could find for their music. that's why it's so pure and magical in every song they do. becker's guitar playing is so smooth and fagen's vocals are magnificent,it's no wonder they had hit after hit after hit. i suggest one of their epic songs "Aja' from the album of the same name. it's the ultimate rock and jazz fusion song.
Larry Carltons solos on this track are iconic. Considered one of the best ever. 64 Gibson ES 335 with hand wound Seymour Duncan. By the Seymour Duncan.
Next Steely reaction .. Don't take me alive
The Royal Scam is an amazing ALBUM....whole thing....The title track, Don't Take Me Alive, The Fez, Haitian Divorce....telling you....shades of things to come....
Larry Carlton and his ES335
"Gaucho" by Steely Dan. By far their best album.
Dude?… the sickest
hey hey brother!!
Dr Wu is one of their best lesser known tracks. Check it out.
Love Steely Dan. They seem to sneak on you with the rock.
Nah you certainly can't go wrong with Steely Dan, "Rikki don't lose that number and "Do it again " ❤
Gratifying to see youngsters discovering the power.
Recommend you go early off-road:
"Sons Of Champlin" - the album 'Loosen Up Naturally' 1969 and the songs 'Freedom' or 'Get High'. (Although 'Get High' has a gimmick it is a very interestingly constructed song that will satisfy what you are looking for.)
If you are interested in another case of underappreciated 'san francisco sound' greatness, may I point you to the band/album "It's a Beautiful Day" 1969 and the songs 'Hot Summer Day', 'Wasted Union Blues'...then you'll be ready for 'Time Is'.
Yeah its a cool song
Check "Midnight Cruiser"
"...Now your patrons have all left you in the red / Your low rent friends are dead / This life can be very strange..." This drug manufacturer/dealer has lost his big clients, and street life has taken its toll on the seedier clients.
"...All those Day-glow freaks who used to paint the face / They've joined the human race / Some things will never change..." The recreational users have determined that, instead of being wannabe counterculture icons, they'd rather get paying jobs, an have no more desire for the product.
This guy is watching his business die on the vine in front of him, making him a tragic hero of sorts.
I was there.... in the late 60's and early 70's, acid was king, but by the mid-70's, acid was out and cocaine was the "in" drug. All the hippies became yuppies (day-glow freaks joined the human race).
Supposedly about the King of Acid production on the West Coast, Augustus Owsley. The guitar is just stunning.
John Scofield I think?
Larry Carlton on guitar! One of the most underrated guitarist ever! 🤘
@@lucasroth7922 Thanks bruh. Wicked guitar solo.
@@barrycohen311 he played Josie guitar and Don't Take Me Alive and a plethora of other SD tunes. He has played on over 300 Grammy winners tunes! From Joni Mitchell's Court and Spark to SDs Goucho and more🤘
