🐻🐻🐻 Kid Charlemagne tells the story of the rise and fall of a west coast LSD maker of the finest quality. (Loosely based) around Owsley Stanley, a famous LSD chemist of the 1960s known as Bear. He was a well-known "psychedelic chef" also known for the purity of his product. With the lyrics “You’d go to LA on a dare and you’d go it alone,” references a trip Owsley made as described in Ken Kesey’s The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test. Bear was chemist for the Grateful Dead. The Technicolor Motor Home is likely a reference to the famous psychedelic bus named Further, which was used by the Merry Pranksters, who were supplied their LSD by Owsley. Owsley moved to Los Angeles from Berkeley to mass-produce LSD in 1965. The line "Look at all the white men on the street..." I believe references the rise of cocaine, with the 'white men' being either the dealers or the cocaine. The final verse describes Owsley’s eventual 1967 bust when he was arrested after his car reportedly ran out of gas. (Is there gas in the car? Yes there's gas in the car...) It's a great story if you know all the lyrics so here they are: 🦉While the music played, you worked by candlelight Those San Francisco nights You were the best in town Just by chance you crossed the diamond with the pearl You turned it on the world That's when you turned the world around (Did you feel like Jesus?) Did you realize That you were a champion in their eyes? On the hill the stuff was laced with kerosene But yours was kitchen-clean Everyone stopped to stare at your technicolor motor home Every A-Frame had your number on the wall You must have had it all You'd go to L.A. on a dare and you'd go it alone (Could you live forever?) Could you see the day? Could you feel your whole world fall apart and fade away? Get along, get along, Kid Charlemagne Get along, Kid Charlemagne Now your patrons have all left you in the red Your low-rent friends are dead This life can be very strange All those Day-Glo freaks who used to paint the face They've joined the human race Some things will never change (Son, you were mistaken) You are obsolete Look at all the white men on the street Get along, get along, Kid Charlemagne Get along, Kid Charlemagne Clean this mess up else we'll all end up in jail Those test tubes and the scale Just get it all out of here Is there gas in the car? Yes, there's gas in the car I think the people down the hall know who you are (Careful what you carry) 'Cause the man is wise You are still an outlaw in their eyes Get along (get along), get along, Kid Charlemagne (get along) Get along, Kid Charlemagne 🦉
And he was not just the chemist for the Dead, he was also their sound engineer, literally inventing the concert speaker and phased mics that are still the basis for the industry. His proceeds from LSD sales financed the band in it's early years, and he's the inspiration for their dancing bear logo.
You have just added another of the all time most talented groups in the history of Classic Rock, contemporary jazzy tunes that are always brilliantly done with sophisticated lyrics and outstanding arrangements. AWESOME JM... TOO COOL again.
Steely Dan is iconic! There are no bad songs by them, and this is definitely one rabbit hole you want to continue exploring! Thanks for a great music choice and reaction! ✌💙✌
You have opened up a huge rabbit hole. Great song after great song is what you'll get from Steely Dan. Pick a song, and it will become your new favorite. Green Earrings, Haitian Divorce, The Fez, Tha Caves of Altimira, all are great, just keep reacting to Steely Dan please. All their other albums are fire too. You'll recognize their song Black Cow, I guarantee it, so please consider reacting to that also. Peace
Steely Dan is an American rock band founded in 1971 in New York by Walter Becker and Donald Fagen. Initially the band had a stable lineup, but in 1974 Becker and Fagen retired from live performances to become a studio-only band, opting to record with a revolving cast of session musicians.... "Reelin’ In the Years"...."Hey Nineteen"..."Peg"..."Do It Again"..."Rikki Don't Lose That Number"..."Dirty Work".... just to mention a few of their little gems.
Entertainment factor of your content. First it is the artist/song you’re doing, then your reaction comments, then comes the viewer comments. It all adds up to a very entertaining experience for those who have discovered your channel. Not pausing or talking over the song is CRITICAL because the song and hearing it as you do is very important. Many people are hearing the song for the first time with you, (some of my suggestions) It is always interesting to watch your expressions waiting to hear your analysis that is always comprehensive covering all aspects of the song. You are extremely insightful and catch the most important elements of the music and performance. I for one am happy to see your success as you grow your knowledge of the greatest music ever created and gain followers more all the time. Keep up the great work you are doing. TOO COOL
@AliasMark69 I can only but echo your praises for this great reactor. Always pleased to see him hollerin' at me with a new video. You're the best, JIMBOY TV!
I love that no matter what you're obviously feeling, you don't stop the song!!! That is one of my major pet peeves with these reaction videos. The only time I can deal is when I am watching voice coaches or singers critiquing technique.
"Kid Charlemagne" While the music played, you worked by candlelight Those San Francisco nights You were the best in town Just by chance you crossed the diamond with the pearl You turned it on the world That's when you turned the world around Did you realize That you were a champion in their eyes? On the hill the stuff was laced with kerosene But yours was kitchen-clean Everyone stopped to stare at your technicolor motor home Every A-Frame had your number on the wall You must have had it all You'd go to L.A. on a dare and you'd go it alone Could you see the day? Great selection, thanks, one of the best tunes ever recorded, been listening to it since its inception and never tire of it. And Larry Carlton's guitar genius (especially the solo and outro) is some of the best work you'll ever hear. Bravo!
Imagine..... Every note played by real musicians with real instruments. A Lost Art Form in too many cases these days..... That's why WE call it "CLASSIC". Nothing else can touch it.
The original tapes that they used had multiple parts of the song. They could have switched tracks and it would have sounded totally different. I think one of their mixes were the foundation of the live version on Alive in America.
There’s nothing they’ve done I dislike. Been a huge fan since the beginning and could still listen to them forever! Loved your expression when he sang Is there gas in the car? Yes, there’s gas in the car!
The album this song is off "Royal Scam" is a masterpiece and in my opinion their best,"Aja" was their best selling album a very good one but R.S is a lot more enjoyable for me.
Royal Scam is really Dan's peak of their "dirty" stuff, imho. Aja, started their obsession with perfection, and certainly worth listening regularly, but their earlier stuff is looser and full of great, vivid characters.
You may never be the same after listening to this. You’re are close to becoming a jazz fan. An enlightened club of distinguished people with fine taste.
I like how this song is about the famous drug Lord Owsley, And it says "the man is wise" like an owl. Then the next line says "you are still an outlaw in their eyes". It's like they almost say "you are still an owl..." but then the rest of the word falls in....Walter and Donald were amazing at crafting lyrics with nooks and crannies which unfold more and more even after decades of intensive listening...
BTW JM... I watch you on a 75" with 400 watts/16 speakers. Your smiling face is 18" and your sound is always great. We all enjoy your "Content" Thanks.
We have a local band here in San Diego called the steely Dammed.. of course they play steely Dan live to perfection,.. approved by Don and Walter themselves.. check them out!
Larry Carlton crushes the guitar solo. Larry had to re-learn it when they went on tour some yrs. later because the band recorded it in several takes. Gibson 335. Great sound.
Please take this rabbit hole. Nobody does smoother songs about terrible people than The Dan. Try anything else off of The Royal Scam (the album Kid Charlemagne leads off), Dirty Work (a song about a booty call), Do It Again (Track one off of the first studio album, which is quite the power move), Black Friday (an overlooked gem), and, once you have some more of The Dan under your belt, go to the album Aja. Aja is definitely the deep end of The Dan, and I would suggest getting some more experience in the shallows first. Aja is used to test out stereo equipment.
HEY.... "SERIOUSLY" (pun intended) I/WE want to watch YOU watch the funniest 9min 38secs ever in any movie. The scene when Cheech meets Chong for the first time picking him up hitch-hiking. Some of the best raw moments in cinematic history. Join the Millions and Millions that love these guys. LEGENDARY. Cheech and Chong - "Up In Smoke"
Nah, it's musically recycling, using someone else's musical contribution to make your own musical contribution. It's a modern-day version of Baroque composers paying reference to other composers.
This is a top fucking tier song for sure.
Everybody on this track deserves a medal.
Bernard Purdie on the skins with his distinctive Purdie Shuffle
Love the UA-cam Vid when he shows that shuffle.

Yes!! I was going to comment about what the song is all about!! Lol but you beat me to it!! 😂... You're background on it is much better though!
Thanks for the info. Love the Band and the Song, but never knew the background
Nice breakdown. But the electric kool aid acid test wasn't Kesey. It was Tom Wolfe.
And he was not just the chemist for the Dead, he was also their sound engineer, literally inventing the concert speaker and phased mics that are still the basis for the industry. His proceeds from LSD sales financed the band in it's early years, and he's the inspiration for their dancing bear logo.
One correction: Further was the busses destination, not its name.
Larry Carlton on guitar - absolutely brilliant. Deacon Blues, Green Earrings, Don’t Take Me Alive- you can’t go wrong w anything
Is there gas in the caaarrr. Yes there's gas in the car.
You have just added another of the all time most talented groups in the history of Classic Rock, contemporary jazzy tunes that are always brilliantly done with sophisticated lyrics and outstanding arrangements. AWESOME JM... TOO COOL again.
Chuck Rainey’s bass part on this goes so hard. He and Bernard Purdie on drums is a tough rhythm section to beat.
You can't go wrong with STEELY DAN ..no sir
Kid Charlemagne was Owsley Bear Stanley-- the Grateful Dead chemist.
Steely Dan is iconic! There are no bad songs by them, and this is definitely one rabbit hole you want to continue exploring! Thanks for a great music choice and reaction! ✌💙✌
Larry Carlton's solo at the end is untouchable.

Do a Peg reaction Steely Dan... :) great reaction!
Larry Carlton's solo. Pretty damn fly for a jazz guy.

It's hard to pick a favorite Steely song but this is up there. So funky.
Finally got to see them in 2018 after years of listening to them influenced by my dad. They are simply amazing.
IGY by Donald Fagan. Reeling in the Years, Do it Again, Peg, Black Cow, Aja.

Is there gas in the car?
Yes, there's gas in the caaaaaaaaaar.
Easily on my top ten favorite bands of all time
Great selection, thanks, one of the best tunes ever recorded, been listening to it since its inception and never tire of it. And Larry Carlton's guitar genius (especially the solo and outro) is some of the best work you'll ever hear. Bravo!
Steely Dan is Bad Ass!!! This song is about LSD by the way.
Great tune! Great band! ❤
Imagine..... Every note played by real musicians with real instruments. A Lost Art Form in too many cases these days..... That's why WE call it "CLASSIC". Nothing else can touch it.
Back when the music business had masterful musicians making the music. Not mere mumbling computer programmers.
People still do that today, boomer. You're just too lazy to find new music.
Cringe as hell bro
Kanye is a musical genius if you can’t respect that you need to grow up
Hard to believe only one classic rock station in Houston. Today's music isn't music.
The original tapes that they used had multiple parts of the song. They could have switched tracks and it would have sounded totally different. I think one of their mixes were the foundation of the live version on Alive in America.
You need to check out every track from Steely Dan's "Aja" album, particularly "Peg."
I have seen these guys several times. They sound just as good if not better live as on a studio recording.
There’s nothing they’ve done I dislike. Been a huge fan since the beginning and could still listen to them forever! Loved your expression when he sang Is there gas in the car? Yes, there’s gas in the car!
Great reaction! Do more Steely Dan and you'll have guaranteed great songs to react to. How about try "Peg" next?
The album this song is off "Royal Scam" is a masterpiece and in my opinion their best,"Aja" was their best selling album a very good one but R.S is a lot more enjoyable for me.

Well written my friend,I also think that Aja was a bit too commercialised but I'm not complaining.
0:55 Bro makes the "oh, that's where that Kanye sample came from" face.
You may never be the same after listening to this. You’re are close to becoming a jazz fan. An enlightened club of distinguished people with fine taste.
Great reaction! Hope to see you soon. New, true reactions to great oldies brings them back anew.
Little Feat - "Willin'
Little Feat - anything!
My old school, TUNE 🎶
Great song about LSD chemist Owsley Stanley with fabulous guitar work & solo by Larry Carlton. Steely Dan at their best!
Steely Dan was a cool band! Total session musicians who changed members sometimes with each song and album.
More Steely Dan….😊 try My Old School
No "Beat Box" necessary. Real Talent with those sticks.
Top of food chain muscicians
BTW JM... I watch you on a 75" with 400 watts/16 speakers. Your smiling face is 18" and your sound is always great. We all enjoy your "Content" Thanks.

You got some great suggestions from your live stream, missed the live, watched today
JMBOYTV, fantastic experience!
Thank you.
Stanley Owsley, made the best LSD in the world, ever...facts
Larry Carlton crushes the guitar solo. Larry had to re-learn it when they went on tour some yrs. later because the band recorded it in several takes. Gibson 335. Great sound.
when you know the background on this song it's kind of hilarious. Is there gas in the car?
Aja … Deacon Blues … Home At Last … Don’t Take Me Alive
More Dan. The rest of Royal Scam. Subbed.
Please take this rabbit hole. Nobody does smoother songs about terrible people than The Dan. When talking about steely Dan songs about terrible people, Deacon Blues is definitely number 1!
You asked.... The Greatest Guitarist I know of and seen live is.... Al Di Meola - "Elegant Gypsy Suite"
Good track JM but their best is (My old school)......its absolutely MEGA!
HEY.... "SERIOUSLY" (pun intended) I/WE want to watch YOU watch the funniest 9min 38secs ever in any movie. The scene when Cheech meets Chong for the first time picking him up hitch-hiking. Kanye is a brilliant talent and he knew what to sample. Steely Dan was one of the best bands of the seventies.
Too bad he can't come up with own shit.
100%
You'll never hear Steely sample Kanye that's for sure.
Dude. Your mouth is open. I love genuine surprise. Wait a minute...who
Jeff "Skunk" Baxter on Lead Guitar..... another of the great ones.
On this cut, it is not Skunk, but the great Larry Carlton.
@@danielmccann8325 Exactly.
Larry Carlton here
So sampling means, stealing someone else's talent?
Nah, it's musically recycling, using someone else's musical contribution to make your own musical contribution. It's a modern-day version of Baroque composers paying reference to other composers.
Yes means that they not talented enough to write their own shit.
Kanye has a knack for picking great samples... his political opinions need some work tho. 🙄
I'll listen to this but I won't listen to carney because I hate rap
