- Square Enix has announced that they plan to be aggressive with their game release on other platforms including Xbox, Nintendo, PlayStation, and PC. This seems to match up with what is happening in the rest of the industry as more look to new revenue paths for their companies. Xbox news today is all about how fans are excited that Final Fantasy on Xbox could finally be a regular thing.
Update: After I recorded this they announced layoffs :(

Thats how you do it, not shut down studios. Xbox still has a big L.
@@Tinbeef22didn’t square shut down the forespoken dev studio?
Too late. They've not fostered their next generation of customers and alienated a bunch of the existing ones at the same time.
@@Tinbeef22Playstation has closed the same amount of studios as Xbox despite having considerably less 😂 AND Playstation has lead to the closure of 4 third party studios during the same timeframe.

To be honest, besides the traditional console exclusives Xbox or ps respectively, I don't believe it's in anybody interests to hold games from other platforms... Just an opinion
Just to add to the above... Only exclusives that make sense to me are those of which give the brand/plastic box it's identity, halo, last of us etc. Anything outside the norm, is not good for gamers or Devs
@@Bigtoddj agreed. Don't hold established IP's that were on other consoles hostage as exclusives. If Sony or Microsoft develop a new IP with a third-party publisher, then that's fine. Don't take something that someone has enjoyed on their preferred console and make it exclusive to the other hardware.
PC and mobile gaming is a growing market. Console sales are stagnating. Sony can no longer afford the amount needed to compensate a developer for making a game exclusive.
@@sophieedel6324 it only growing market because it not regulated like consoles are as we have seen with the helldiver drama.
@@stewarde17 There's many reasons PC gaming is growing imo. COVID caused millions of people to work from home, requiring a PC. There's India, a gaming market of a billion people, using almost entirely PC/mobile to game instead of consoles. There's also PC handhelds now. etc
God of War, Gran Turismo...theyre SUPPOSED to be exclusive, they're FIRST PARTY. Square Enix, a third party, has no business being exclusive to Sony systems.
First party exclusives are studios owned by the console maker and decided to keep them on only their console. Nothing wrong with that.
Second party exclusives are studios/publishers contracted by the console maker to make a game for them alone. Nothing wrong with that since it's all decided before the game is made.
Third party exclusives are where the console maker pretty much looks at a game in development and decides they want it on their own console alone and pay the independent studio/publisher making the game to keep it off the competing consoles. This is sleazy in my opinion and now it's gotten to the point that it's getting too expensive for consoles to pay for that exclusivity.
If you can’t make money on a platform why release on it?
Well the reasons why Square did what they did is because how how bad FF13 did on Xbox. So I believe it was at the time a win win situation...

You buffoon, all those Switch exclusives you're talking about are all niche small games. Those don't factor in as much. Meanwhile, it's a FACT that nearly all of Square's big AAA games that they spent hundreds of millions of dollars on are exclusive to PlayStation, and they ALL underperformed.
Besides, what Square is talking about here is going FULL multiplatform. Every or almost every game being on every single platform whenever possible, across PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo, and PC. None of this half-in-half-out crap that they've been doing over the last several years. Like Octopath Traveller being only on Switch and PC, then getting an Xbox port like 3 years later. Or NEO: The World Ends with you being on everything except Xbox.
The days of those sorts of inconsistent platform releases for Square Enix games will be over. The majority of their games will release on ALL consoles, including Xbox, day-one. And Square's big AAA games will never be PlayStation exclusive ever again.
Honestly I think it’s the other way around. Sony been wasting their money on exclusivity deals that haven’t delivered too well

However, Square Enix has been struggling due to some questionable business decisions, such as focusing on live service games, NFTs, and investing in AI technology.
If Sony, Microsoft, or Nintendo were to offer funding for a project, Square would likely accept the offer without hesitation."
Not all Playstation gamers buy squaresoft games or any FF titles. It's really bad for developers to miss out on opportunities to sell games on the first day for a wider audience.

Yeah, no.
Finally! A step in the right direction. For years now I have been asking Square Enix inside of my mind palace "what, do you guys not like money?"

Add Babylon's Fall and Balan Wonderworld to that list too. Yuji Naka's inclusion should had help but instead it hurts SE even more due to its terrible game design.
Who told you FF7 underperformed?
they never said ff7 under preformed and charts do not show that they underperformed. Also, given modern consoles are essentially custom-build PC's and, thus, it is relatively easy to go multiplatform (platforms are not _that_ different), selling for a few peanuts is still worth it if porting costs is a single penny. Even if sales on PC and XBox are just 30% of sales on PS, it would cost PS their entire share to compensate it, making exclusivity deal questionable for both parties.
@@hugoboss917 I don’t think it’s going to sell on Xbox either but not because it’s a nerd franchise. I just think times have changed and Square isn’t the belle of the ball anymore. People seem to like Souls type games. You know something is wrong when FF games aren’t selling in Japan.

Finally. No more exclusive curse
There are only so many gamers, and those gamers have only so many hours to play in their day.
Even if gamers' money wasn't an issue (which it is, of course) that means gamers will only spend so much. If game devs want more of the pool of potential monies, then they need to hit every platform, and make *high quality* and fun games that we *want* to play.
I don't care how many platforms a piece of crap is on, it will fail. And the platforms are beginning to learn that we won't buy a platform just to get access to an exclusive title.
Sony is screwing themselves by trying to grab numbers and data (through PSN and the modification Helldivers 2 will be seeing once they figure out how to datamine the Steam API) and forgetting the real goal: selling games and making money. The datagrab goal is making their games unsellable in 180 countries on the planet. Seems inconceivable, right? Unless they are getting something worth more to them via that PSN Link.

Bro.

hopefully there is a way Square can get out of those FF contracts with Sony so everyone can play those games.
The one thing I will point out that no one is actually understanding when we say Xbox has sold 35 to PS5s 60. We are talking about Millions of Consoles. So having nearly 40%-50% more possible sales isn't a light number. Xbox selling 30 Million consoles isn't an exit scenario from selling hardware for them. Xbox games might exist elsewhere but the ecosystem exists on that console. I also don't think you can under-estimate the idea that Sony has likely had discussion to put Spider Man 2 on Xbox after seeing the enthusiasm of Sea of Thieves. Thought that idea likely was shot down fast from a financial investor standpoint 40% more sales that would put that game over the moon in the black is something at least touched upon. It sold 10 million but is only approaching profitablity.
So Square moving towards putting games on Xbox isn't a weak move. It's a necessary one. Unless you just want all those studios to close as well because of loyalty.
Next you have to consider what a game like Spider Man 2 or Starfield does for their ecosystems being GamePass and PS Plus. The issue Sony and Microsoft are having is trying to determine what is the monitary gain from those services as they relate to those releases. Sony is in a better position theoretically since they nearly made all costs back on Spider Man 2, but GamePass also has 34 Million Subscribers which probably bring in about 80% per month in revenue that Spider Man 2 made in 4 months.
So for people not to understand why or what's going on or that people are greedy is shortsighted. People were greedy in 1997 with Final Fantasy 7 at Squre. People were greedy in 2011 with Skryim at Bethesda. The business has changed not the greed. The symptom of the games business shake up is directly due to the change in models. Brick and mortor aren't where your sales or revenue gains are any longer.
Their was a reason Spencer released Hi-Fi Rush on PS5. I believe it was his attempt to save Tango. Unfortunately, we vote with our money even when we don't. I am not saying we should repurchase games or artifically support a Studio, but at the same time I fired up Halo Infinite on GamePass last night and was really surprized by how the good the mulitplayer is after not playing for over a year. If their is anything I would encourage all of us to do, is re-engage if you own or subscribe to a service even just to check out a game. It might make all the difference if enough people are.
Saying this as a Playstation player and a hardcore Final Fantasy fan: GOOD
I’m some cases. The lead director for Rebirth said that the game wouldn’t be as big as it is if it was on multiple platforms. Focusing on PS5 hardware allowed them to expand their ideas and mechanics to the limit. If Rebirth was on other consoles Rebirth wouldn’t be the game it is rn

Lmao, the responses, thank you fellowship of captain obvious, maybe one of you will post something I didn't know while not missing the point 🤷♂️🤦♂️🤣
Well it’s about damn time!! 👏
The person mentioning 2DHD just means that they want more games like Octopath Traveler on all platforms
Increased cost of production + flatline of console sales (giving you a customer ceiling) means these publishers are POTENTIALLY leaving money on the table. Not that they will sell huge numbers, but if they can make more money vs the additional cost to port, then it is good for them business wise.
I think MS is slowly looking that way as they become a bigger publisher than a console maker.
Only Xbox's sales are flatlining
@@rangokfunkazuul8344all console sales are flatlining. Stop being a blind zealot. Where are the other 100 million ps4 users that haven't gotten a ps5 yet? We're easily halfway through this gen already and not even half of the ps4 playerbase has upgraded.
Jeez.. kinda sad we're already halfway through this gen and haven't gotten anything new out of either company. Just cross gen sequels, remasters and copy/paste 3rd party titles. 😂
The Sony Ponys arnt going to like this hahahaha
1st!
We know square enix is a silly company, but hey PlayStation fans, start your week with some great news 😅😅😅😅😅😅😅
y'all been having fun with Xbox forever, time to eat some Crow. SUCKERS 😅😅😅
😂😂😂
Go close some more studios.
@@Miadaskate Yeah, PlayStation been on a roll with layoffs and studio closures this year. They've even been canceling games...
Where's Factions 😃
They didn't say they would stop doing exclusives altogether.
well there better be a clause in the remake games contract that if a game dose not sell well they able to brake the exlusive contrackt
As somebody that has never had a desire to own a PlayStation product this is good news
20 million potential, lmao most of the Xbots will expect these games on Gamepass. 😂
But the problem with all these companies is that they trying to make their game realistic instead of making games with great gameplay and story. But also focusing on single players games and maybe 30hrs games instead of 100hrs plus or multiplayer games or live service. Stop all that nonsense and see growth.
How are you going to make a game interesting enough to last 100 hours? Unless you want fillers with your games, 30-50 hours should be enough. Platformers, puzzlers, shmups, and action adventures don't need to be that long. RPGs and open world are the only few exceptions. Also take into consideration replay value, if a game had fun replay value, doesn't matter if it took 2 hours or 20 hours to complete, those replay value keeps the game interesting and the players coming back.
Glad Square is moving on - it’s not the PS1 or PS2 era anymore. MAYBE at their discretion they can revisit exclusivity later on a new or different IP once they make some money (preferably not) - but they have been leaving a lot of money on the table.
It'll sell millions on your donebox won't it
PlayStation players are not buying the exclusives. They're all on CoD and Fortnite.
Bingo 👍
And it's funny because all the call of duty games they're buying will go straight to Microsoft pockets 😅
I been trying to tell Ponies 🐴 that but they don't want to believe it 🤣
Ponies will buy PS5 Pro for 3rd party Xbox games 🤣.
@@NewVegasCarrier Yep 🤣
FINALLY! That's great for us Consumers!💣🔥
I'm sure someone else has pointed this out but 2DhD or HD-2D games are blended 3D background with Pixel art like Octapath or Triangle Stategy and I agree one of my newer discovered loves in gaming
Thank you! I’m dying to play FFXVI on Xbox.
About god damn time!
SE never said they were going to stop making exclusives for Sony.
Zuby and a couple others actually read the entire doc. And it says nothing about not doing deals.
cope some more, it's over
@@stankyyboi Do some research, lower revenue is more attributed to MMO's not performing on Mobile/PC like they had projected.
About time. I do wonder what this means for ff7r part 3 though. It looks like rebirth underperformed so I would like to know if SE already has a contract with Sony for part 3 to remain exclusive or if SE will release all 3 parts on xbox and Nintendo as well now.
3rd party exclusives should not exist, only first party exclusives makes sense
I’m a huge final fantasy fan and I mostly play on PlayStation and pc. Rebirth is one of my favorite games ever and I loved ff16 more people should be able to play them it’s better for the brand and I want people on other platforms be able to have access so I’m happy about this.
Playstation has a giant userbase that doesn't buy games.
Xbox ain't no better. With Gamepass there's less intent to buy games.
And Xbox has a smaller user base that doesn't buy consoles.
X box had the biggest player base that don't buy games.
@@pedromartinez-xt7yeit's funny that you say that but it's seems like it you pony's that do not buy games you idiots nearly killed square enix cope harder my little pony
@@IcyPolarBear369Yes but its not a giant userbase, its nowhere near the size of the Playstation userbase. Ps5 outsold XSX, 2 to 1. One company touts high quality exclusives the other gaming on a budget.
Xbots were getting fed up with bad Xbox news. 😂
right!! i don't know what is worse them or the insecure sony fans in the xbox posts.
@@cluckbent6466 Or the triggered Xbots replying back cause their feelings were hurt.
@@countquackula8539 i own all 3 consoles. How many platinums do YOU have?
@cluckbent6466 I own all 3 consoles, too. What's your point?
@@cluckbent6466I have 72.
This remind me a lot of the Capcom situation when they signed all those exclusives with Nintendo for the Gamecube before seening how it sold first. They called it the Capcom 5 which consisted of Dead Phoenix, P.N.03, Viewtiful Joe, Killer7 and believe it or not Resident Evil 4. All those games was originally exclusive to the Gamecube, but once Capcom seen how poorly they were selling, they had no choice but to make them multi-platform, putting them on PlayStation 2. And later down the line Xbox and PC. As they say history don't repeats itself, but it rhymes.
Will it mean better pc support is the real question since ff7 remake never got proper shader compilations patch fixes?
Good riddance to Sony and their business practices
Ponys too poor to buy games 😂
Majority of ps5 are inactive.. About 3 million alone were only bought because it was bundled with Spiderman 2
And MS too incompetent to make them...
Get ready for the damage control 😂
maybe ms should buy them and close them?
bro u seriously trying to start some fanboy shit after the week xbox has had in the media?
Whats crazy is PS was ready to go to court over Call of Duty being owned by microsoft and the slight chance it would have been made exclusive, but digs their heels in their own exclusives.
Maybe I just hate Sony more then i knew lol
THANK GOD
I cant fricking wait to finally just get to play a damn game on whatever system I want. I havent had a PS since 2, and have lost so much interest in FF because I always have to play them years late and spoiled. Like im finally playing 15 now, ive seen the movie, know the ending and know who dies, yay.
Holy shit, this is actually so great. About time Square pulled their heads outta their asses. Going Exclusive is so dumb, no one is going to keep buying 500-800$ systems to play 1 game every couple years thats exclusive. And im not selling my PC and going Sony fan boy for a FF game every 5~ years.
It's over for SONY.
Another win for Xbox and Phil Spencer.
Another win lmfao tell is there last one
You know people are excited but don't realize Squre enix will probably change its mind again.
What a joke after the week Xbox had.
The thing is that FF doesn't sell on Xbox. More sales will come from PC and Switch, but Xbox is just non-existent.
Final Fantasy 16 and Remake sold 10M combined (2M on PC) to an install base of 50Million. I think it’s safe to say, it’s not selling well at all. Otherwise they wouldn’t be doing this. And even if it sold 500K copies on Xbox, that’s still 500k more than what they generated or failed to generate on PS. This is good news, and I knew it was coming. Square has been upset with sales lately
No shit. Square Enix release half their games on Xbox so they've not got loyal franchise customers on platform. They did this to themselves and now they're trying to correct THEIR mistakes. Not Xbox's. If they don't foster a new generation of gamers to grow into the Final Fantasy games then that's THEIR problem and a symptom of their short term cash strategies rather than the long term health of their tentpole franchise.
Hopefully they can put out special editions of FFXVI & the VII remakes to skirt any dangling exclusivity clauses.
Only Nintendo would have the capability to stay om the Traditional console strategy because they have strongest and famous IPs like Mario, Zelda, Pokemon and etc.
Others should adapt with the new means.
Ponies is losing
Good, they deserve it.
Ohhh yeah and they are screaming too
Over 40 million PS5’s sold. We aren’t losing anything. How many Xbox acquired studios will be closed?
Just like Xbox fans to celebrate...nothing 😂
What games yall getting from this? Name one 😂😂😂
They are consistently getting Ls like last 12 years. They will celebrate it if you say hi to them. They are that desperate.
@@hododod246 literally anything at all to shift the focus off the death of Xbox.
7R is gonna come out exclusive again for Part 3 and they'll be making videos like But their financials from 2024 said 🥺🥺🥺
I mean, besides the new mainline Final Fantasy games and the occasional HD-2D game on Switch, Square was already multiplatform. Biggest difference is more support for Xbox now which is cool. Presenting this news as if Square games were all Playstation exclusives is ignoring that most of their catalog is already multiplatform.
By the way since you seemed confused in the video, HD-2D is what Square calls the Octopath/Triangle Strategy style of games.
About time, this whole "Xbox gamers don't buy and play RPGs" is tired and old. Exclusives as a whole are just anti consumer tbh.
It used to help sell hardware but it's not 1999 anymore. Console sales don't matter much at all.
