3 Phase Direct Online Starter DOL Wiring and Connections Explained

Electrician Matt and me look at and the wiring and connection in a 3 phase direct online started (DOL). In this video we explains how to connect the supply and the out going load (motor) within in a DOL starter. Matt explains the wiring for the overload relay and reset button plus the connection for the internal stop and start buttons. This video will help with level 3 electrical courses for both electrical apprentices, part time, full time learners as well as AM2, AM2S and AM2E.

I wouldn't worry too much about meticulously learning the DOL.
In the am2 you are provided with a wiring diagram, so it is very easy to see where the link cable is missing from.

What is the benefit of using a contactor relay? Why not use 3 poles C32 Amper circuit breaker to use it as a switch for more simple schematics?

What about VFD. Lots of new IE2 & IE3 3ph motors are designed to be run from single phase supplies via inverters.
I'd like to see this covered as a video with some reference to the way this works and is wired up with starters and remote controls.

Not specific to Motors but if the motor was turning the wrong way, this is the result of 2 phases being crossed... is this Polarity or is polarity only when the Neutral is involved? Would I just say crossed phases/conductors? I think the terminology I used was wrong last time & I don't want to make the same mistakes!

Hi - I love your videos and they have been super helpful in helping me prepare for my AM2s, however I managed to fail my Fault Finding. I know there is some description of a fault where the motor is 'juddering' or something similar but I cant for the life of me remember what the fault was or how to test and then rectify it. Can you help me with this? Thank you!

Hi thanks for the lovely message. If a 3 phase motor was juddering it has lost one of it phases. Remember all faults on AM2S are found either visually or by dead testing. All the best and keep me updated 👍🏻

Fist of all apologies about this, a question only vaguely related to 3 PH Motors! If a building has 2 Phase supply, how is the Main 3 PH &N Section/DIstribution board cabled from incoming 2 Phase supply ?. As i understand it there won't be 3 Phase available. You may guess I'm working on an old school which needs a rewire.
