I can’t believe after all these years of sewing, that something as easy as holding the thread ends when beginning to sew, would prevent the thread tangle. Thank you for your great videos!
I just started sewing and for me some of these seemed to be learn as you go I noticed the thread would pull as I would sew so I held the threads and noticed it would make a vast difference.
All three tips helped, what helped the most was explaining the reason behind each tip. Many people would say keep long tails and leave it there, explaining how the machine works and that it pulls the thread back is extremely useful.
This video was a GODSEND. i was having 50/50 luck when it came to the thread jamming and it was all because i thought the thread tails were better short. No one ever explains this stuff in a way i can understand as an autistic person teaching himself to sew, but this video was very easy to understand, very well explained, and a huge help. Thank you so much ! 💕
I learned to sew over 40 years ago. Listening to you I realized how I never really developed confidence to just sew. Sharing all your advice and tips has taken a very old and heavy burden off my shoulders! Thank you so much. You are my sewing angel.
As my tears and wailing subsided, I found you and your tips. Long threads and hang on to the ends was the handiest tip. Oh, and check the bobbin. My thread jam was being caused by the wrong bobbin!! Thankyou!!
I am not a newbie so I was aware of these tips but I had trouble with thread jams with my bernina until I discovered the feed dogs were down. I had tried buying new thread, changing out the needle, rethreading my machine countless times and nothing worked until I noticed the feed dogs. I love your videos by the way. Thank you!
You are a true joy to learn from, kind; patience, precise; great visual, easy to listen to. Keep the videos coming, you have a natural gift of teaching. Thank you for all your tips.
Great tips. Changed out my needle, started with the needle down, and held thread as I began sewing. What a difference! I usually hem ALL my trousers, jeans, pants in general. Nothing earth-shattering. But a MUST! Thank you!
Thank you!! My sewing machine was going to go into orbit very soon. The answer for me was holding onto the thread while starting to sew. Hopefully no more jamming. x
I just started learning to sew and the thread jammed several times. I assumed this was happening because I was using a cheap thread but now I was making the three mistakes you described in this video. I just singned up for your free seven day course!
IVE BEEN SCOURING UA-cam FOR AN HR. WITHIN 15 SECONDS YOUVE FIXED IT. LONG TAILS!!!!! I’ve had the bobbin thread out and retread the machine 200x Thanks!
I am a new sewist - and kept having thread jams. I’m making masks for people during COVID-19, so I’m using my skills (!) from Middle School. Lol! It seems I was starting too close to the end. Also, holding the threads at the start helped. THANK YOU.
I’m excited for you! It’s a wonderful skill that will serve you and others. I’ve been sewing since middle school too! But that means I’ve been sewing about 45 yrs. oh my! Masks are perfect beginner project. Just a couple tips. Look at CDC instructions for masks. Use good quality quilters cotton. All masks are not created equal. You want best protection possible for yourself and loved ones. God bless.
After YEARS of thread jams and nearly tossing my machine into the river, I stumbled upon this dear lady Evelyn! In one sentence she set me on the straight and narrow path to success. I took her course on sewing the 20's bag and NOT ONE JAMB! I am forever grateful Evelyn! You are a sweetheart of sweethearts! Lord bless you dear one!
It's nearly 11 o'clock at night. I've foolishly decided to teach myself to sew by making my daughters Mary Poppins costume (just the skirt) and it's due tomorrow for the play! Total life saver. Thank you thank you!!and thank heavens for UA-cam!!! Just a simple skirt my butt, grumble grumble...
@@Evelyn__WoodThank you. It actually did much to my surprise and I had loads of fun making it!! Very buoyed to face my next project! Plus i made it bigger in the waist so that we can change the elastic later and it'll still fit her when she's 16! After all what 6 year old girl really needs an ankle length black a-line skirt... Thanks again. Keep up the good work x
I was not holding on to the threads AND I was cutting the remainder threads too short. I am confident I was also getting too close to the edge. Thank you!
Thank goodness I found your video. I was starting to hate my sewing machine but having tried all your tips I can now love it again. All three tips are spot on and I can now get on with my projects. Thank you so much 🏴
I am a beginner in sewing .. I just brought my sewing machine lately and noticed all of that jamming and I tot I brought a damaged sewing machine and get disappointed haha .. I was thinking all of that as a reason but I'm not sure until I saw this video .. really help me a lot and keeps my worries away .. thank you ❣️
I officially started sewing the day before yesterday, I love crocheting but decided to make some masks for my grandchildren. Your videos are so helpful! I was actually wondering why my thread was bunching up, thanks to you, I know why! Thank you so much for your explanations. I had to subscribe and I can't wait to learn more.
OMG I can’t believe this worked!!!! After struggling for half an hour with my threads getting stuck the tips you gave solved all my problems! Thank you SO much!!
Not a little advice... It's 100 percent great and useful for me.. I like your smile sister.. Very positive.. Lots of love from Tamilnadu India ..💕💕💕💕💕💕💕
I’m very lucky that I have someone who said they’d teach me how to sew. However, because they’ve been sewing for many years I think they overlooked helping me to get started with tips like these. So thank you, Evelyn. These videos will help me to maybe start afresh a little and look at some of the most frustrating things I’ve kept coming across.
I'm a long-time quilter and recently I've been having that "knotting" issue big time. Plus the top thread has gotten wrapped around the bobbin itself. I know those tips you gave but I needed the reminder. So onward, I go and see if those three little tips will take care of my issues on this last project I've been working on. Thank You.
So grateful for your help in figuring out what I was doing wrong. The most helpful of these 3 tips for me, was longer thread tails and holding onto them before I begin to sew! I searched many different videos to try and get the instruction I was looking for and finally found your very helpful video! Much appreciation and many thanks!
That explains it! One of the tutorials I watched mentioned holding the bobbin thread when sewing gathering stitches, and it made me wonder why. Now I know! Thank you!
I'm new to sewing, I was having this problem and I knew it was user error, I just didn't know what I was doing wrong. I wasn't leaving the length nor was I holding the tail. Thank you !!!
You are a great instructor for those of us who have to know the “why” behind everything. Logic is greatly underrated…guilty of leaving short threads behind, and starting from the edge of the fabric.
Thank you so much for these tips. This always happened to me. I started at the very edge. Even though I held onto the thread. Your advice on started a little below then backtracking helps a lot. Thank you very much. Keep making your videos. You are helping this new sewing enthusiast and I’m sure many others too. 🥰
Thank you! The tip about not starting at the edge is the piece of advice I needed, I had already struggled through, I also have determined that I need a different thread, I had been using a heavy button thread and it keeps locking up and breaking, twisting itself into knots. Thanks for the helpful video!
OMG, It really worked, Bought a machine to make curtains for a camper. Started jamming. I did what she said and it really worked. Thanks, almost turned the machine in. first time ever sewed.
Thank you so much for this perfect video. I am brand new to sewing and I've had thread tangled up in the bobbin compartment and on the back of my fabric. I've been so discouraged this afternoon! I used all three tips, and I'm finally sewing! Perhaps the most helpful tip was holding the thread as it gets drawn in.
I learned to sew in home ec at high school at 14 yrs old, 62 yrs ago now. I am back working on my skills again, after 4 difficult yrs. Have been doing baby & toddler garments , constantly improving bit by bit. You are a wonderful instructor, always encouraging me to try again & it does get better. Mindfulness is so healing at my sewing machine, all other thoughts fade away. Thank you, wishing you healing thoughts from a fellow breast Ca survivor.
Hi great quick tips for those of us that have sewn for decades! ❤Can you make a quick one on rolled hemming please? I learned in a bridal shop but cannot get my machine to do it 🙏🙏🙏
I've had my sewing machine a little under 2 weeks - having decided that the messy hand sts and repeated finger perforations were too much, and I am so glad I've found your videos. Which of your tips helped the most from this video? All of them. I'm about to have another go at making some masks and I expect to be able to complete them without a single thread jam this time round. Thank you.
Oh my gosh, thank you! Haven’t sewed much since high school, 40th reunion two years ago, but thought I could pick it right up. Like riding a bike, right? Wrong! Spent 80% of my time fixing tangled gobs of thread. I just happened upon your video. You have no idea how much stress you have just saved me! I have now subscribed and will be checking out your channel for more tips!
Thanks Evelyn, you’re a lifesaver! I was about to give up and just hand sew everything for the rest of my life 😂. At least I’m confident with my hand sewing. Edit: I was trying to start at the edge of the fabric, then wondering why my top thread was breaking with too much tension. That would be why. Thank you. I might actually finish a project this year now, instead of taking forever to hand sew!
been sewing for years but not very well My gramma tried to teach me but was not interested. Now she is gone and I have you gals on UA-cam to help me out. Thread jamming and knits are my worst..but I want to make clothes for my foster babies and knits seem to be key. So thanks for the thread jamming help.
You described this so well and succinctly and solved ALL my problems!! Can't wait to follow you for more as a brand new sewer who wants to learn to make all kinds of pretty things. Subscribed!
I knew these tips but your videos are always a great reminder of things that you can easily forget, especially when you haven't used your machine in about 5 years!
For me the tip about not starting at the edge was super helpful. Was having lots of thread balls when I was starting. I love your video, presentation, your style and dry humor! Thank you so much!
Thank you so much! For the life of me I couldn't figure out why my needle started jamming. At first, I thought I had threaded wrongly, because it has been a year since I had done a beginners course. After your tutorial I knew for certain that I was threading correctly and it was just jamming because I was pulling too hard on the fabric when sewing. The needle would hit the plate instead of going in the hole. *OOPS*
Oh gosh! I'm very glad you sort that one out! Be sure to change the needle so you have a nice sharp one in it! Also if you didn't know and if you are looking for a refresher course, I have a free 5-day crash course to learn to sew, you can sign up on my website! www.evelynwood.com.au and I am sure there are some more tips in there to get you going again!
Thank you very much for the information. I’m a beginner sewer. I have been starting at the edge of fabric and now I know the reason the sewing machine was jamming. Love your channel!
I think my dad taught me these when I started sewing. I did not even realize them until I watched this. I'm not sure I knew about holding the threads as you start.
My sister sows so I got interest in it and wanted to try myself . She got me a machine and showed me how to work it but rn she at work so I was trying to make a bag for Mother’s Day but the thread kept getting jammed so this vid just helped me ! Thank you so much 😊
I figured it out after years of bobbin jamming, and machine blaming. I have four sewing machines, and only use my first one. Thanks, Evelyn, for sharing your cheerful and very helpful common sense. ☦️🕊❤️
I’m a new sewer and I’m getting so frustrated with my thread keep coming off my needle and now I finally know why😂thank you so much , just found your videos and you’ve definitely gained a new subscriber 😁
I'm so in love with this series! Girl, you gotta get me sewing!! Jamming is my #1 problem - My favourite tip is holding on to the ends - I will try that. The bottom thread gives me anxiety....
Corrie I am so happy to hear you are into this series! And better that you are sewing!!! Yes holding the threads will help ou a lot, as the machine starts you will feel them pull back into the machine, and then it makes a lot of sense as to why you should hold! If you ever have any suggestions for some more tips videos, ie things you run into problems with, let me know!
Evelyn Wood this is my everyday problem in my sewing i am just starting learning to sew and I found your video... i will do your advise hope it works to me..! :) thanks!
I wish u where my teacher! I’d keep comming back as a student! I knew thease from frustration and learning alone. But the way u explained in depth of “why” makes so much sense and clearity! U could have saved me so much money on thread! 🤣
I've had my machine for 3 years. I've been wanting to refashion dresses but my bobbin keeps knotting up lol but I knew none of these tips!! When I unpack, I'll sign up for the crash course.
Fabulous!!! You will find great value in the free course to get you started and know your machine better! And keep these tricks in mind, you should get a lot further! x
I've been sewing for at least 12 years and yet didn't make this connection 🤣🤣🤣 I think I do some without thinking but sometimes I forget and then I'm confused about why my thread is getting nesty...
Thank you soooooo much, my sewing machine nearly went flying out of the door today. Thank you for explaining everything so clearly , I'm making bunting for our new niece xx and a little quilt x
Great tip!!! I had tried it and found it very useful.... Thank you so much Evelyn! I hoped I can see videos about measuring the body and some pattern drawing..
Hi Eve, thanks so much for watching! I'm am really glad that you found this useful! Measuring the body is something I can definitely put on the list! And pattern maybe for the future! Thanks for the suggestions!
It worked! I’ve been trying to figure out why my machine locks up as soon as I start sewing, and your tips worked!!! I’m now moving right along with my project! THANK YOU!
Thank you so much for this video! Could you do a video on thread tension, that would be so helpful! No matter what I do, I can't get the tension right on my 80's sewing machine, even on basic cotton fabrics! :(
Thanks so much for watching! Oh, thread tension can be tricky! I'll add it to the list. I would recommend being an older machine and that you have so much trouble with it, that maybe it just needs a good service, they will clean and oil everything and get the tensions just right for you!
I just thank God for you. I purchased 2 sewing machines and returned them both because I couldn't master them. However, the desire to sew was still in my heart. So two nights ago, I decided to watch sewing videos. I came across one of your videos and became motivated all over again. So I purchased another machine (Singer Simple 337) and began to use it. Once I finally got a hold of somewhat mastering a straight line stitch my machine kept jamming. Here I am now watching your video. My problem was starting my sewing on the edge of the fabric and not holding the strings before I began. I hope I can meet you in person one day soon! I've subscribed and set my notifications for all of your videos! Thanks for your help!
There's also using the wrong type of needle for your thread, wrong thread for your fabric and my personal demon - not having the needle in the correct position when threading the machine which keeps the thread from getting the correct tension. Urg!
Thanks for the tips :) My daughter is a beginner who loves to sew. She got so frustrating when thread keeps jamming and bobbin thread jamming. She will try these methods.
Thank you! Keeping the tails long and not starting at the very edge did the trick. Wasted so much time taking things apart and cursing the machine. Look forward to checking out more of your videos.
I do not know how to sew. I just got my machine threaded and bobbin set. I keep having to restart after fixing my thread. I love this video. This info will help!
my prayers have been answered after 39 years! thankyou...started sewing when I was 13 yrs old. Been asking everyone I know who sees how to avoid the awful thread jam...and those who answered always told me to adjust my tension...never worked!
This made my day!! Yes, the tension gets blamed for a lot of operator error! I'm very happy now you the mystery is solved and you can enjoy sewing !!! And don't forget to tell all those people that didn't know! x
What's the other causes of Jamming in the Bobbin area of my machine? I do all the things you listed here already. I'm getting alot of jamming underneath in the Bobbin area, now. My machine was running fine yesterday and Now it going Goofy😕on me. Please Help me😰
Danny try cleaning it. take off the metal thread plate, and pull out the bobbin casing if you can, and clean all the fluff out from the bobbin area! if you refer to your manual it will show you how to do this on your machine. also, try a new needle and new spool of thread. I hope that helps! they get really dirty and dont like it!
Hi Evelyn. Thank you for creating this video. I was getting very frustrated and ready to give up on sewing all together but I found your video, and have been sewing ever since. ❤
I have legitimately taken to hand-sewing because of how frustrating I find machines jamming the thread like 3 times and then I don't do it any different and it just magically works, hopefully these help and I can use the machine again
I can’t believe after all these years of sewing, that something as easy as holding the thread ends when beginning to sew, would prevent the thread tangle. Thank you for your great videos!
Glad it helped!! 😄
I just started to do it too..works!
I just started sewing and for me some of these seemed to be learn as you go I noticed the thread would pull as I would sew so I held the threads and noticed it would make a vast difference.
I'm in the same boat. Been sewing for years and didn't know holding the thread ends would help keep it from jamming. Great tips!
I'm fairly new at sewing, s0 as above comment I learned something new. I thought you said your sewing video was free, is this correct?
All three tips helped, what helped the most was explaining the reason behind each tip. Many people would say keep long tails and leave it there, explaining how the machine works and that it pulls the thread back is extremely useful.
I totally agree! Understanding the "why" always helps me understand and retain information. 🙂
I learned to sew over 40 years ago. Listening to you I realized how I never really developed confidence to just sew. Sharing all your advice and tips has taken a very old and heavy burden off my shoulders! Thank you so much. You are my sewing angel.
Maybe buying an expensive machine , like one thousand six hundred and ten dollars, solve the problem
As my tears and wailing subsided, I found you and your tips. Long threads and hang on to the ends was the handiest tip. Oh, and check the bobbin. My thread jam was being caused by the wrong bobbin!! Thankyou!!
I should have watched this before I started 😂
Kcrossglaive me too
Kcrossglaive same, I messed up so bad 😂
Same. Everything she's talking about are problems I spent way too much time trying to figure out 🧵❤
Kcrossglaive Me too. Would have saved a lot of frustration!
Same!!! 😂 😂 😂
If it were not for you..I was going to lose my #$%^'ing mind!!
Thank you 😖😲🤗😆
Amber McQueen currently losing mine 😤
Let's hope it fixes my sewing machine. All I need to do is hem my cricket whites and I'm losing my mind right now
Lol Snap !
I completely was right there with you!!
Ready to toss my machine out the window
I think I’ve been making EVERY beginner mistake you’ve listed and never realized they were mistakes. Thank you!
Thank you!
Thank you! I wish someone would have told me to hold the tails before I spiralled into 35 mins of frustration !! Haha so happy I found this video
You are a true joy to learn from, kind; patience, precise; great visual, easy to listen to. Keep the videos coming, you have a natural gift of teaching. Thank you for all your tips.
Awww Janet!! Thank you, that is so kind of you to say! I hope it encourages you to keep sewing!!
God bless hope you are feeling better 🙏 ❤️

great!! I just posted another video furthering this topic on thread jam, it might help you out and further your skills! 😄
I've sewn for a while but i'm far from proficient.. I am making masks as well and just had this problem ugh

Wish I knew your sewing tips 50 years ago, but of course you weren't yet born! Better late than never!
Thank you for this info! I had thread jams galore!
First off I was threading the bloody thing wrong. And starting at the very edge of the fabric! Soooo extremely helpful! Thank you!!

Very helpful especially the part about not beginning right at the edge. I didn't realize I was doing that.

OMG I can’t believe this worked!!!! After struggling for half an hour with my threads getting stuck the tips you gave solved all my problems! Thank you SO much!!
So helpful! Simple but makes complete sense. There are so many variables when you start it can be frustrating to problem solve.
Not a little advice... It's 100 percent great and useful for me.. I like your smile sister.. Very positive.. Lots of love from Tamilnadu India ..💕💕💕💕💕💕💕
I think I do all 3 of these things .
I am going to get my dreaded machine out and try again . Thought it was dirty ... lol
Me too!
All unknown to me before this video; short thread tail, holding thread tail and starting on edge of fabric. Thank you for the info!

Oh right, that thing! 😙
Yup but in a few months I will be finished and able to sew again whenever I want!!!
Thank you for telling me to lengthen my thread so it doesn't bunch up at the beginning of sewing. Invaluable.
Holding onto the threads is one useful tip for me!
It's amazing! After three tries with the thread bunching up I simply held on to the ends and wahoo! It worked. I couldn't believe it!
WOW THIS HAS BEEN SOOOO HELPFUL! I'VE BEEN MAKING THESE MISTAKES EVERYDAY!
Thank you so much 😊
I'm so glad it helped!!
Thank you so much! I'm 11 and trying to make my family face masks. And this has helped me so much!
I figured it out after years of bobbin jamming, and machine blaming. I have four sewing machines, and only use my first one. Thanks, Evelyn, for sharing your cheerful and very helpful common sense. ☦️🕊❤️
Great tips thank you very much I have been having lots of thread jamming lately I would try this tips
I’m a new sewer and I’m getting so frustrated with my thread keep coming off my needle and now I finally know why😂thank you so much , just found your videos and you’ve definitely gained a new subscriber 😁
I hope you get a few tips from this one! Let me know which tip was most useful for you!
Evelyn Wood hello l have so problem with my singer curvd 8673 sewing machine my up thread is ok but under is very bad please help me
Evelyn Wood this is my everyday problem in my sewing i am just starting learning to sew and I found your video... i will do your advise hope it works to me..! :) thanks!
OMG! Thank you! You solved all three of my problems that I didn't know why they happened.
I wish u where my teacher! I’d keep comming back as a student! I knew thease from frustration and learning alone. But the way u explained in depth of “why” makes so much sense and clearity! U could have saved me so much money on thread! 🤣
3rd tip is what I needed to hear
I am from South Africa and just started watching your videos and find it very helpful even I am sewing a long time.
I've had my machine for 3 years. I've been wanting to refashion dresses but my bobbin keeps knotting up lol but I knew none of these tips!! When I unpack, I'll sign up for the crash course.
Fabulous!!! You will find great value in the free course to get you started and know your machine better! And keep these tricks in mind, you should get a lot further! x
I've been sewing for years and learned something new. Thank you
I've been sewing for at least 12 years and yet didn't make this connection 🤣🤣🤣 I think I do some without thinking but sometimes I forget and then I'm confused about why my thread is getting nesty...
Yes, these are definitely things that you might not realize until someone tells you!
Thank you soooooo much, my sewing machine nearly went flying out of the door today. Thank you for explaining everything so clearly , I'm making bunting for our new niece xx and a little quilt x
Thank you so much. I have been having this problem and I have been so frustrated. I knew to keep the thread longer but not the other two.
+LIFE OF A MIL-WIFE Wonderful!! Im glad this had helped! And hopefully makes sewing more enjoyable now!
Hi, Thank you for your tips. The first one was the most useful for me.
That's great Evelyn and looking forward!
It worked! I’ve been trying to figure out why my machine locks up as soon as I start sewing, and your tips worked!!! I’m now moving right along with my project! THANK YOU!
I'm very glad to hear it! Happy sewing!
Thank you for the advice! :)
My pleasure!
I'm so glad you kept at it!! ❤❤
BEAUTIFUL STUFF ! ! ! ! I LOVE YOU ! ! ! You fixed my major issue I was having. THANK YOU ! ! !
Great!! I'm glad to hear it! On with the sewing!
I've had a sewing machine since I was 10. Didn't know any of this and I always have my bobbin knot up. THANK YOU!
Thanks so much for these tips!
Alicia thanks so much for watching! I'm really glad you found them useful!
Thank you! Keeping the tails long and not starting at the very edge did the trick. Wasted so much time taking things apart and cursing the machine. Look forward to checking out more of your videos.
😀 I'm so glad that helped you! I just posted another video to further this topic if you ask want some more help and understand your machine better!
Yes, I do all three of these! So good to know I was set up with good habits by my mum. :)
Katie your mum taught you well! And good on you for continuing the good habits!
I do not know how to sew. I just got my machine threaded and bobbin set. I keep having to restart after fixing my thread. I love this video. This info will help!
Well hat's off to u I now know how to stop the jamming
my prayers have been answered after 39 years! thankyou...started sewing when I was 13 yrs old.
And don't forget to tell all those people that didn't know! x
Why hello there, new best friend! 😭❤️
I am a total beginner and have occasionally had my thread loop underneath or jamming, so this is a very handy tip thank you. 😊
0k, my machine is New only used it for an hour or 2 at the most. I'll try some other things also that I've seen on UT. Thanks for the answer back.
No problem! There could be a number of things. Its just a process of elimination to find which one! I hope you get it!
Make sure the foot is UP when you thread the machine.
Maybe the bobbin isn't right for your machine
Hi Evelyn. Thank you for creating this video. I was getting very frustrated and ready to give up on sewing all together but I found your video, and have been sewing ever since. ❤
You sound like How to cook That anyway the video was very helpful!
Ok I had to look that up! It sounds like they are Australian ( or I think she has a New Zealand accent) as well!
I have legitimately taken to hand-sewing because of how frustrating I find machines jamming the thread like 3 times and then I don't do it any different and it just magically works, hopefully these help and I can use the machine again
