- Never run out of disk space on your iPhone again! Here are some simple ways to copy photos from an iPhone without using a computer.
iPhone Flash Drives
The Bolt from Kingston is designed specifically to be used with an iPhone or iPad. There are other options out there like the Leef iBridge, but for this demonstration we’ll use the Bolt flash drive for iPhone. Transferring photos using the Bolt is easy. Just plug the Bolt into your phone for the first time and you’ll see a prompt to download the Bolt app from the App Store. After it is installed, whenever you plug in the device, you’ll have to click “Allow” to allow the two devices to communicate. From there, you can click transfer, decide what you’d like to transfer and then you even have the option to keep or delete the original photos on the device after transfer, instead of you having to do it manually. The Bolt is super tiny and can easily be stored on your keychain when you are out and about. Now since it is so tiny, you may be worried about it getting misplaced and falling into the wrong hands. You can secure it in the app settings to use a passcode or Touch ID each time the app opens. The Bolt comes in a variety of different capacity and price point options and it even allows you to record or capture directly to the Bolt if you are really in a rush and don’t want to transfer before getting that great shot. iCloud
If you’d rather backup and transfer photos and videos using cloud storage, there are many options out there. This is arguably a less secure way to go, given data breaches in the past, but requires no secondary device to make the magic happen. It does however, require a wifi connection. After finding a wifi connection, go to settings, your name, and tap iCloud, then iCloud Backup, then Backup Now. If you’d rather have iCloud do this automatically each day when plugged in and connected to wifi, you can turn on iCloud Backup in your settings and voila! Done! - provided you have enough available space in your iCloud that is. Packages start as low as $0.99/month if you need to add more.
Google Drive and Dropbox
If you’d rather use another cloud storage option, like Google Drive or Dropbox, there are apps to make that easier as well. The Google Drive app for iOS makes transferring and auto-backup simple. You’ll see similar transfer options to iCloud and you can turn on auto backup by going to settings, photos, then toggle on the switch for auto backup. Dropbox has a similar app as well, however you must be a Dropbox Plus or Professional account holder to enable their “camera uploads” feature, which is their auto-backup option.
Wireless Hard Drives
But what if you like the security of transferring to a local device, but have a TON to backup, like I’m talking a TB or more! Then you may even want to consider an external hard drive - and yes, some of these are designed to skip the computer as the middleman! The LaCie Fuel wireless hard drive is a great example - it’s wireless with up to 10 hours of battery life, so you can take it with you and transfer photos and videos on the go using built in wifi.
NAS Drives
Then there are great NAS drive options. NAS stands for network-attached storage and these are dedicated storage devices that connect to your home router, so that your files are available to you from any device when you are on the go. WD’s My Cloud is an example of such a device that has a very good iOS app making advanced tasks like remote access and family sharing simple for a new user. Plus you can get models with up to 20 terabytes of storage or buy the chassis empty and install your own hard drives or SSDs for a custom storage setup.

Thank you, finally I find my answers. I have 30,000 photos and Videos, its part of my Job, but it just starts to feel like you never get to “file” anything because its all just sitting there all there time on the Cloud. I wish I had started to sort them properly at 10,000!!!!!

Is it able to retain the properties of iPhone ‘Live’ photos? In the past I have transferred files from my phone to external hard drives but later when I copied back to my Mac the Live Photos became regular jpg pictures.

Does this add more storage to my iPhone because I have a 32GB, but I edit with LumaFusion and the export sizes are big. Does this allow me to get more storage to export the video I edited to my photos? Also, I upload all my videos to UA-cam from my phone.

Hey Mya! You can choose individual photos or the whole folder for transfer. When you download the Bolt app and plug the drive in, it will allow you to pick what you would like to transfer.

I presently have all my photos on the iCloud paying a monthly fee. What would I require to have wirelessly to be able to access these photos from my MacBook, 2 iPad and 2 iPhone and not have to store my photos on the cloud.

@Kingston Technology I have an iPhone X and have some long videos I need to transfer, will the Bolt allow me to do that or are their size restrictions. I bought another drive and found out it has size restrictions on video size and can't transfer the videos. It also corrupted the videos I was trying to transfer. Looking for a product that would allow that.

What would you recommend to shoot video for long periods of time on my phone. I am purchasing a yolotek power pole to charge my phone so i can shoot long videos off my phone but am concerned with running out of memory if i try to video for long periods such as 2 hours or more. I will be on a lake taking video so having wifi wont really be possible. What would you suggest? Thanks.
Hi Mike have you found a solution for that? I'm having the same issue with my old iPhone 6s. I'd like to use an external memory card and be able to charge it at the same time, but there is only one lightning slot. The iPhone splitter cables the sell out there is power & audio (aux), so it doesn't work for this purpose. Thanks!
HaveFun365 - Rosie no I haven’t unfortunately. From what I am seeing I would need a phone with a lot more memory in order to take the amount of footage I would want. I was able to clear a lot of photos and video and get myself 11gb but shooting video footage I would have to download after a couple hours then start video again. Still not sure on what to do about it. If you find something let me know.

Hi Lynne since the iPhone 4 came with a 30 pin cable, there were no USB's made for a connection like that. Other than 3rd party 30-pin to micro USB or USB adapters which are not guaranteed to work since this model does not seem to support OTG capabilities. You can always use iTunes to sync up your iPhone that should still work but you may want to check back with Apple in case the OS might no longer be supported.
After backing up the photos into the drive, can you plug it into a new phone with a new Apple ID to download the photos to the phone??

It saves your media on the Bolt itself (comes in 32GB, 64GB, 128GB). All the content you transfer from your Apple device will be saved in it's original quality, there is no compression ;)
But how can i transfer back on an external drive from the kingston usb ? Cause connector is only like the charger socket and not a usb
You can have the USB drive and external drive hooked up to a system to perform the transfer. Look into an adapter cable so you can use a USB port to connect your device.
This is all excellent but I need to move 6 movies from Apple TV to a thumb drive. Any ideas on how to do it?
Hey Robert, you'll need to check with the manufacturer to see if you can transfer files from the Apple TV to an external drive.
Not an Apple TV. From my iPad Pro.
You can use a computer to transfer the files to before copying them to the USB drive. Use iTunes to save the files on the system from the iPad, then connect your USB drive.

When you places photos on the bolt and then transfer them to your Mac, does it keep the original data for the phone, ie. Time and dates etc.?
Bolt doesn't alter your media in any way, and everything that's transferred from your iOS devices will retain its original data (dimension, size, file name etc.). :) .

You could do that, but we always recommend several types of back up for files. The Cloud and a separate drive for your pictures would be good in case something happens to one of the copies.

Yes, you can transfer photos to and from the Bolt drive. It would be a good idea to have other forms of back up for the photos just in case something happens.

Can you transfer songs from the bolt to the iphone for ringtones?
Please note that the DT Bolt app links to the camera roll of your iPhone or iPad and so only picture and movies taken with the device's camera can be imported to the Bolt.
