@@anythingispossiblewithtoni4580 Sure there is! Well I’m assuming that you mean copying from iTunes to a flash drive on your Mac / PC right? If so then all you should need to do is ensure that you’re on the lastest iTunes update/version, then open up iTunes, find the music/playlists, then simply select them, open your flash drive in a separate window, and simply drag them over.
@@anythingispossiblewithtoni4580 Oh thanks for clarifying, but I will admit that I have no experience with iTunes on the iPhone. However, the principle remains the same for virtually all applications where the media must exist on the iPhone itself whether it was downloaded, saved or otherwise… from there you can simply copy them individually, in batches, or altogether. Hoping that helps 😊
@@FruchtigeNuss it’s funny you would say that but I just thought about that yesterday thinking I wonder if that’s possible… And I’ve had an iPhone for several years I hold out for a long time but I have 130,000 photos but the other thing I want to say is there is a way to get 4 TB and that’s to join Apple premium They give you one month free trial then you have 4 TB and then after that month you have to renew your 999 2 TB
Thank you. I just tried selecting all my album photos/videos together > up arrow > Save to Files > browse then choose your external HD > Save. Worked Perfectly fine for all the album!
Thanks. You just nailed my problem. I've been screwing around with ICloud and Google Drive to try and move video files from my two IPhones to my PC and just a few moments before your video popped up on my UA-cam feed I was thinking about the problems and grousing about how much of a pain it is to move files. Over the last few days I have watched several videos on getting my video files over to my PC and not one of them mentioned this method. A HUGE THANK YOU.
You’re most welcome my friend. Really happy to help. But yes, in my humble opinion, this method is the most efficient way to backup your iPhone storage outside of iCloud and other cloud services
I’ve always suggested this to people who really wanna save their photos for real. They always think this is complicated.. it’s alarmingly easy. You can even dedicate an external NVMe to sync anytime plugged in. Good video, if more people did this Apple would lose millions in cloud storage fees.. which are 99% paid because people don’t wanna lose pictures.
My sentiments exactly my friend and thanks for watching! 🍻iCloud storage is mostly for convenience more than anything else. Both cloud and physical storage have pros and cons though depending on circumstances. But nothing beats old fashioned cold storage backup…. And like you said, it’s really easy to do. I doubt Apple will lose much if people are more aware because cloud storage does have its place in this increasingly fast paced and mobile world. I need it just as much as my physical cold storage.
@@KamaniBrown you’re probably right there. It’s nice to have access from anywhere which cloud is ideal for. I just hate monthly fees. Like my google account.. my Gmail is all I have used for a decade. Now they are trying to extort a monthly fee to have more than 15gb.. the whole reason I bought a Nexus 6P way back when was the “lifetime 100gb cloud storage” but they backtracked on that in 2020. Had to delete like five years of work emails and get rid of more video in google storage to get back down to ~8gb used. Apple is easier to swallow but I use an iPhone and my main machine is a MacBook Air so it’s worthwhile for me. Still hate any monthly fees but I guess some are better than others. I’ll never pay google though, I’ll just use a different service that’s smaller if it comes down to it and I can forward from gmail or something.
That WD external storage is probably on NTFS storage format, therefore read-only, you'll see the same if plugged in to a Mac. However, if it is formatted in exFAT, APFS, or other mac-approved format, it will work.
It’s already formatted in exFAT my friend. The issue is that it still wasn’t getting enough juice 😆. Apparently I needed to use a powered usb hub for that HDD (she guzzles a lot of power)
This is a game changer for me thank you!! Im here recording footage, then waiting until the next day to let it sync to the iCloud overnight, then the next morning I can work on it on my MacBook and from there save the files on to my external SSD. This will literally cut a full day from filming to editing.
You’re most welcome my friend and thanks for watching 🍻. Trust me, this has indeed saved me a ton of time as well! Time and money on iCloud storage 🤭. Glad I helped!
Great stuff. I'm new to iPhone just got a 13 on Tuesday and was not happy with the weird hacks to get videos on to my pc. I like this method so much better and it is portable. I like you attitude about affordable non-apple accessories. I'm going to watch more of your videos tomorrow and thanks!
I tried this and it just works great! Thanks for sharing this mate, really helped a lot! The only thing to really remember is to make sure the external drive is in exFAT format. I didn't do this at first and it was in FAT32 and the copying took hell of a time (20 pics around 20-30 minutes). The only thing I noticed is that why are some of the pictures saved as JPEG and most are in HEIC format?
Thanks for watching and really glad that everything worked out! You’re absolutely correct about the formatting part. It’s very important that your drives are indeed formatted to exFAT. As for the picture format, something of note is that it depends on your method of copying… if you copy the pictures using the method I used in the video, they will be saved in the universal JPEG format (allowing them to be opened and manipulated on virtually any other device). However, if you copy them using the “save to files” option, they will be saved in their native (original) format which will be HEIC (the standard compression format apple uses for iPhone photos). So my guess is that you may have been subconsciously switching between both methods in your backing up process, hence why some are in jpeg and some are in HEIC format… it’s a common mistake my friend. No worries.
Hey @@KamaniBrown , thanks! Yeah I think you're right. Most of the time I was using the "Save to files" option which explains why I am getting the HEIC format. But I can confirm that it does not affect the video files as they are saved as .MOV. Thanks again! :)
Hi great video I like to know how do you continue the copy and paste method if I need to do only a batch of photos bc of time constraints. Then continue where I left off so I am not duplicate the copy and paste photos Thanks
Excellent. I was so tired of waiting for iCloud to synch so I could download the files to my PC. This works for video files too. It takes a few minutes, but it still works. Thanks!
You have explained a lot. I was wondering how to use the adaptor for power and you gave me the answer in seconds. My next question is, How long does information last on a dongle or solid state hard drive. Over years does the information fade or get corrupted. I am very ignorant in this area so please forgive me for asking dumb questions.
Thanks for watching and Happy to help my friend. As long as your storage device (SSD, flash drive, etc…) is in good condition and without any factory faults, it will last you for years to come. They will last you almost forever if all you do is use them for occasional backup of data, and even if you use them heavily every single day, they should still last you years no problem. And no there will be no degradation of your data. Your data will be fine as long as the storage device is in tip-top shape and doesn’t fail, which yet again (as long as there’s no factory faults) would be years to come. Remember the iPhone itself essentially uses the same flash memory type found in modern SSDs and Flash drives.
Wow now this is really interesting and a great video!!! I have one of those adapters here and have never imagined doing what you just did, thank you so much!!!
Hey great video. I had this set up but was having issues with just thumb drive wanting too much power. lucky i had the adapter that had a lightning port as well so that i can plug it in the computer
You’re correct my friend. Thanks for watching 🍻. However that WD drive was formatted correctly in exFAT format just like the SSD. The apparent problem is that she’s power hungry and requires a powered usb hub to work properly.
Thanks! I've seen drives without enough power not even show up but never read only. interesting!! I know iPads have issues with certain drives regardless of the power provided. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ I wish everything just worked together all the time! @@KamaniBrown
Nice! That’s great man and thanks for watching 🍻. Like you said, the powered USB-C hub is the other option as well. I also discovered that it’s what will actually make the mechanical external hard drive work as well.
You’re most welcome my friend! Glad I could help! I also did a follow up video with additional details recent. So you can check it out also: ua-cam.com/video/Ug7Aolot1Jw/v-deo.html
You’re most welcome 😊. Thanks for watching! Also note that you can use SD cards as well if you want an even more compact setup. You check that out in this video I did with both setups for comparison: ua-cam.com/video/p4urlGjFZAU/v-deo.html
Kamani, great video, I have an older HP SimpleSave External Hard Drive that works flawlessly. I got the drive about 18 years ago. I had to plug it into a powered USB hub then take a cable to plug that hub into the iPad or iPhone port. Works with any USB Drives as well. I do have a picture of my set up if you would like to see it. I am using an iPhone 12 Pro and an iPad 2018 6th gen 9.7” and my whole set up works for everything…USB, SD, Microsoft SD, Compact Flash and External Drives… 6:46
Nice! Thanks for your detailed description of how you got it to work. Myself and other viewers will be happy to know that their HDD will work as well using this method. 🍻
1:10 I got the flash drive and attachment. But can't see the Drive in “File”, It's for iOS 18 and above. Is your Drive formatted to exFat or Fat 32 but preferably exFat. NTFS formatted drives would never show, since it's a Microsoft proprietary file system. So just format ur SSD/HDD or Flash drive to exFat on a laptop/ computer ?
Yes the hard drive was formatted correctly in exFAT… but it needed more power apparently. I would have to use a different adapter that could supply more power. But who cares 😂. That’s almost dead tech at this point 😂. Stick to flash drives, SSD, and SD cards. They’re much faster and take up less space 😅
@ I got the 512GB SanDisk flash drive. But when I put it into my iPhone (se) it won’t recognize it. However an old 32GB drive I have laying around the house does it recognize when I plug it into the phone. I put the 512GB into my laptop and it shows up. I right click on it to “format” it to exFat. Then put it back into the phone…but it still won’t recognize it. Any suggestions? Otherwise, I’m returning the 512GB. But not sure what to get instead. The 32GB only transferred 10 videos, but I need to get 4000 videos off my phone :(
@ oooh Sandisk drives can be finicky fr. Sometimes they need their dumb apps and firmware to work properly. You can try another brand such as this one: amzn.to/4j7NJGH It’s actually the same model I used in the video. The only difference being the capacity because I used a 64gb one at the time.
While you definitely can copy your mp3 files from usb to iPhone using the method I show in this video I made here: ua-cam.com/video/IPlOGAeOe9U/v-deo.html ... You can't directly share them to your Apple Music playlist (assuming this is the app you use for your music playlists). If it's a different app you're speaking about though, let me know and I'll do my best to help further!
Sure! When in your photo gallery, simply press “select” and then pick all the photos (and even videos) that you want to copy… then press the share option and then press “copy”. Then you go to the files app, select the storage device and paste just like in the video. For ease of reference though, you can watch this update video I made recently that shows me copying multiple photos (and video) at once: ua-cam.com/video/Ug7Aolot1Jw/v-deo.html As a side note, you can also quickly and easily select multiple pictures and videos at once after pressing “select” in the top right corner of your gallery, then selecting a picture/video, then keep your finger on that selected pic/video and then dragging your fingers across and down to quickly select a ton of them at once.
Hello my friend. Yes I recommend that you format the drive to exFAT format using a PC or Mac first for best results. And yes you will indeed be able to view the Apple photos on a windows PC. There are 2 ways you may be able to view them: 1. Copy and paste them to the drive: then they will end up being copied in the universal “jpeg” format that can be viewed on almost any device. Or 2. Download the HEVC extension from the Microsoft store to support the format. Although if you have a PC with an updated windows 11 it should just work regardless, without you having to download anything extra.
great video… using iphone 15pro max - i select multiple files but no way to save them.. only add to an album… any way around this? i must be missing something
@@Walk4r😂 no worries bro. You’re most certainly not an idiot! We all make mistakes and you figured it out all on your own 🍻. Any other questions though, feel free to ask!
you’ve just saved me… like hundreds of hours. most of my videos i make have 400-500 videos, takes 2 days to upload to icloud. then to download it barely works.. and i had the hard drive in front of me… even cancelled my 200gb icloud. your a bloody legend!
Thanks my friend. But it was already formatted in exFAT. I found out the real issue is that it needed a powered usb hub to fully work because it demands so much power.
Wah gwaan bredrin 😁. Well you can also use an external SSD as well or attach something big and heavy to the flash drive like a large key ring to make it harder to misplace it. You can also get a high capacity flash drive and keep it strictly for the purpose of backing up your iPhone media at home and tie it to your desk with a string 😅… may sound strange but it works.
Copying photos and movies using Image Capture took 5 minutes for 1585 items equaling 9.46GB - iPhone 12 Pro with Lightening to Apple Mac M1 USC-C running Ventura 13.6. This included jpg, heic, mov and a few dng files (which are RAW images). If you just want to backup photos to your Mac, Image Capture is a good option.
This is also true! A great viable alternative indeed. However it’s not universal and therefore only works if you have access to a Mac computer, you are only restricted to copying pictures and videos, and It also creates a layer in the process. With this process, you will be sending any file type directly from the iPhone to the external storage.
Thanks for watching bro but the HD was indeed formatted to the correct exFAT format, however, I later discovered from the help of other viewers that I would need a powered usb hub for that particular type of storage drive to work.
Thank you! And yes you sure can! I will be posting a video showing how to copy your files from external storage back to the iPhone shortly. So subscribe and turn on notifications to see when I upload it!
Will this work for all pictures, videos & documents on iPhone & iPad? How to know which storage device will definitely work without purchasing? Thanks for the video
Yes indeed it should work with any and all file types because it’s basically like copying / moving files between your iPhone and a PC / Mac in terms of the procedure. Almost any storage device will work as long as you format them in the following formats: exFAT, APFS, APFS (encrypted), FAT32, HFS+ of FAT. You will most likely have to format any storage device you buy into 1 of those those formats using your PC or Mac first before use. I recommend exFAT format because it will enable you to use the storage device on either Mac or PC, however, you can stick to APFS format if you are heavily invested in the Apple Ecosystem. It also goes without saying that the storage device must also be a single partition. For this purpose, I recommend this Samsung SSD drive: amzn.to/3YkWIdy Thanks for tuning in my friend 🍻.
THANK YOU Kamani! I’ve been trying to figure out how to transfer pics from my ipad file to a usb. Can I transfer photos from the icloud this way too? If so, how?
Happy to help my friend! And yes you definitely can transfer photos from iCloud using this exact same method… remember all your media on your phone are also backed up to iCloud (if you have an iCloud subscription large enough to contain them). Otherwise, once it’s on your phone, you can copy them to an external device using this exact same method regardless of the file type and location.
@@reostudio5758 the video at the time was made with an iPhone 14 Pro Max with the lightning port. I currently have the latest iPhone 15 pro max. It’s the same method, just don’t need the adapters.
Not exactly my friend… it’s more to manually backup music, photos, videos, documents and other general files. To backup your user settings, apps, contacts, events, and other user data will require a 3rd party application or for you to use a Mac or PC to manually copy your iCloud backup to the SSD.
No you don’t. The Apple Lightning cable is only good for charging your phone. They are horrible for data transfer. It’s best to use the method I show in the video 😊
Thank you for this amazing video. I would like to find out if PDF files can also be transferred and if the lightning to USB 3.0 works on iPad 9th gen. I plan on getting an iPad 9th generation for school, but I want to be sure first.
You’re most welcome my friend and thanks for tuning in 😊. Yes indeed PDF files and any other file type stored on your iPhone can be copied using this method. It should work with the iPad as well, however to be honest I would recommend going a step up and getting the iPad 10th generation with USB C for just $30 more here: amzn.to/3EQF08K. From experience it will be more versatile and will give you more mileage and versatility as an investment. If you do decide to get the iPad 10th generation, you’ll be able to use this simple and cheap usb-c dongle for data transfers and backup like in this video (it’ll even allow you to use SD cards as well as USB 3.0 devices as shown in the video): amzn.to/468PSuS
@@alial-musabih6044 it depends on the type of usb device. You don’t need 1 if it’s a USB flash drive. However, you will need additional power for the SSD and even more for the HDD.
Great instructions i appreciate it. But ,can i back up 2 or more old computers and 2 i phones plus multiple thumb drives to one device then make a copy. Now once a week i can back thenm all up afgain if i have any new photos. All in one place. Years ago we had old photos stored in one draw in the kitchen. Now we dont have photos on paper but have multipe devices all ove the place. How to we get to one device like the old draw in the kitchen? Thank you please help me.
Sure my friend glad to help. Since you seem to backup a lot of data fairly frequently, I would recommend getting a fairly large capacity SSD such as this 1: amzn.to/46U4wpb and use the lightning to USB adapter as shown in the video and you’ll be good to go! Just make sure to format the new SSD in exFAT format using your PC or Mac before first use and then you’ll be able to use it across as many devices you like for backups and copying.
@@chickenlil241 no you don’t need to download any 3rd party app. It is done by natively using the files app that comes with your iPhone. Let’s try some troubleshooting: 1. What kind of storage device are you using? 2. Did you format the external storage to exFAT format using a PC or Mac? 3. What model iPhone are you using?
The one you recommended is not available and when I look up another one from that company, it says it won’t copy to a external drive. You need a powered USB hub to do so please advise I’d like to buy one.
To be honest my friend I would advise you to purchase a ready made SSD such as this 1: amzn.to/3XMsUGo … it’s more user friendly and cost effective. It also will not require a powered usb hub. The powered usb hub is only needed for the mechanical hard drive that I tested last in the video. The storage devices I used in the video were what I had laying around for a while to drive home the fact that you can use virtually any external storage device you have laying around at home.
Awesome!!! I am trying to move my uploaded songs from my iphone 12 to another iPhone but I haven’t had success. I don’t own s laptop any way this can be done?
Thanks for watching 😊. This method will do exactly what you need my friend. The only thing is that if you plan to use a SSD, you will still need to borrow a laptop to format it to exFAT. However, if it’s a flash drive or SD card, you’re completely good to go without using a laptop at all. Here’s the video I made some time ago showing how to do this with either a flash drive or SD card without needing to format anything on a laptop: ua-cam.com/video/p4urlGjFZAU/v-deo.html Hoping this helps!
My guess is that the WD drive was read only because of the file system format. It was probably in NTFS which Mac (I think iOS as well) can read but can't write to it.
Good guess bro but that wasn’t it … I had it formatted to exFAT and all… apparently she’s a power hungry girl 😅 so I needed to use a powered usb hub to make that 1 work.
@@JoeCastellon ikr! Wouldn’t have figured it out if someone didn’t point it out in the comments 😅. But it’s still good to know it works in a pinch 🤷🏾♂️
Thanks for tuning in! To select multiple pictures and videos at once, simply press “select” in the top right corner, then tap and hold on the first picture/video you want to copy, then sweep your finger across the screen to the right and then sweep it downwards towards the right hand corner and hold your finger down and watch as it selects all the videos and pictures you want. Then simply press share, move to, then select the storage device in the field app as shown, and then press paste. I brushed on this in a follow up video I did here: ua-cam.com/video/Ug7Aolot1Jw/v-deo.html
@@KamaniBrown Thanks so much for your response. Can you also let me know how I might backup "Notes" to USB. There does not seem to be the same option to backup notes. You can save to Dropbox but there does not seem to be an option to save to files.
@@robertwong849 Happy to help! Of course there’s an option to save to files for Notes. But you’ll have to do it individually. Can I use a charging cable to my laptop and my iPhone to copy all my videos and pictures to my laptop? Or do I need lightning? Also, I have Windows 11 and most of these flash drives only work up to windows 10. Is that a non-issue or will there be problems with the flash drive?
Unfortunately my friend the lightning cable will be far too slow and annoying to use to transfer files. And the flash drives should work with windows 11. Please remember that you will have to format the flash drives to exFAT first using a PC or Mac. Also you can use SD cards as well as I show in these videos: 1. ua-cam.com/video/QuGoRzGLDvs/v-deo.html 2. ua-cam.com/video/p4urlGjFZAU/v-deo.html
So will my regular charging cable work with connecting my phone to my laptop? Thank you for responding. And I will format to FAT. Also, if I move the files from my phone to my laptop and then to the flash drive, does it take a copy of it or does it import/export? I want the pictures and the videos to still be on my phone and in the cloud.
@@user-oe4mk9gv7vyes your regular lightning to usbc cable will work with your laptop… but bare in mind that it will be excruciatingly slow. Also please remember that you format to “exFAT” not FAT 🤭. And yes any copying of files between devices will be copy only… which means that your files will always be on the phone unless you manually delete them yourself afterwards. It won’t be a direct import/export.
Well the easiest way I know of is to simply press the “select” option at the top right corner in your gallery, then select 1 photo/video at 1 corner of the screen, then just drag your finger to the opposite corner and hold it there while the screen scrolls and selects all the media you wish to select. Then you select “share” in the bottom left and just like I showed in the video, you may copy or move them to your storage device via the files app. It’s the same for the Files app as well, the only difference being that you will have to press the 3 dots in the top right corner to see the select function first. Hoping this helps and thanks for tuning in 😊.
Cant wait to give it a try! Does it work with transferring AAE files such as Iphone files that have been edited? I noticed they don't transfer onto not apple computers.
Thanks for your input my friend. But I think the current format is exFAT 😅 and you are indeed correct about the speed. As for the drive working overall, I apparently needed a powered usb hub to get it to work. All in all though I don’t recommend using the regular mechanical HDD for this method because it’s just not worth the hassle.
I only had to add additional power for the SSD and HDD. The USB flash drive runs completely off the iPhone’s power. As for the mentioned additional power, I used the my 20 watt phone charger and connected it to the dongle. Hope this explanation helps 😅
Hi Kamani. How much storage has the USB flasdrive in the video? I have an Apple Lightning-USB camera adapter and it doesn’t work with a 128 GB flashdrive without power. I’m looking for a flashdrive wich won’t need additional power. Could you recommend something? Thanks
Thanks for tuning in 😊. I used a 64 gb flash drive from PNY in the video. Here it is if you’d like to check it out: amzn.to/3UywOBa (funny enough the 128gb variant is even cheaper 😅). It has variants up to 512gb. I wouldn’t imagine you needing extra power for something like a flash drive 🤷🏾♂️. But to be honest I don’t currently own a flash drive beyond 64gb at the moment so I’m not sure if higher capacity versions require external power. What I do know for sure is that if you want to use high capacity storage without the need of extra power, the lighting to SD card reader with a high capacity SD card (512gb and above) will work. I did a video on this here: ua-cam.com/video/p4urlGjFZAU/v-deo.html. And here’s the link to that item as well: amzn.to/3L0JVYL . I really hope 1 of the solutions I mentioned up above helps your situation 😊.
My EHD still doesn’t show up on my phone. When I first plug it into my phone, the light blinks then goes off, and doesn’t come back on even if I plug in the extender to a power source. Help please?
The older iPhone series (below the new 15 series) does not allow direct lightning to usb c connection to SSDs… not only that, but you will need additional external power to activate and access the SSD. That’s where this device shown in the video comes in.
I do same method, I disable photo to icloud on my iphone & ipad to prevent auto upload. I use either airdrop from phone to ipad or transfer to external storage. Apple enable this features few years back.. to use external storage.
thanks very much for your helpful video, i have an iPhone 11, but i can't get you tube videos to look anywhere near as clear and sharp as yours and wondering how you do it ? regards tim
Thanks for tuning in my friend 🍻… well for this video I filmed with a Sony ZV-1 camera (I believe the new and updated model is the Sony ZvE10). I usually film using either that or my iPhone 14 Pro Max… but your IPhone 11 is definitely good enough to give you great quality in GOOD LIGHTING… that’s the secret to a great video in my opinion, Great lighting and Great Audio. I actually even did a short video on how to use a professional (and cheap) usb mic for excellent audio quality using this same dongle I presented in this video. Here it is: ua-cam.com/users/shorts0M03TCKE_ao?feature=share
Great video! I would like to ask you for advice. I have two hard drives (formatted in exFat) that I normally use on a PC. I tried to connect them via Hub to the iPad (Air m1) but they turn on without the iPad recognizing them. How could I solve it? I also changed the adapter but nothing. Let me start by saying that until some time ago they were read without the slightest problem.
Thanks for watching! 😊. If you are using a usb hub then you will most likely need to ensure that you have power plugged into it as well for reliable and consistent performance. Try this (if you haven’t already). However, you did say that it worked for you just fine in the past without issue correct? 🤔 Are they SSD storage?
@@KamaniBrown Thanks a lot for the answer! I tried to read the hard disk by connecting the iPad to the power supply but nothing. The hard disk is a simple "WD elements".
@@gioderri9955 Happy to help 😊. Oh it’s a HDD … those are tricky because they need a lot more power than a SSD, flash drive or SD card. So here are a few things I suggest: 1. Use a higher power supply like 30 watts and up (a more powerful power brick with the same usb c cable should work fine) 2. If you haven’t already, test the hard drives on a computer to see if they are still working properly (keeping my fingers crossed 🤞🏾 that they’re not de@d) 3. The last resort If possible, is to try and acquire or borrow a SSD or flash drive big enough to hold the data, copy the data to it, then use that instead. This should be guaranteed to work but of course will cost extra money so that’s why it’s the last resort. If it comes to this, check my pinned comment or description for the SSD or flash drive I would recommend or reach out back to me here 😊. Best of luck and hope 1 of my suggestion helps!
Thanks for watching my friend. But yes the SSD I linked is different because it is overall cheaper and more user friendly. What I used required 2 separate purchases of the SSD itself and the enclosure which worked out to be more money than the 1 I linked with added work of you putting it together (I used it because I already had it on hand). The 1 I recommended is cheaper and simple plug and play. All you would need to do is format it in recommended exFAT format using your PC or Mac. Here is a cheaper option from another trusted brand: amzn.to/3E0xnMp However, you will need to get the USB C to USB A cable or adapter separately. The one I originally recommended comes with everything you need and is also from a trusted and reliable brand (Samsung) plus it will also be faster when using or transferring back to a PC or Mac later on.
Thank you so much for the details and well explained reply. Well, I am not it for the phione backup but for the system and data backup so I am looking for the cheaper that can work. I am a kind of perosn that dont appreciate those products with big names. I just need something reliable. Thanks once again@@KamaniBrown
macOS can not write (out of the Box) to NTFS formatted drives. NTFS drives are read only. I think on iPhone it will be the same. Fat and exFAT formatted Drives should work. Kind regards
Correct my friend. And thanks for watching 🍻. All of the drives used in the video were formatted to exFAT. The mechanical drive apparently needed a powered usb hub to work properly. Go figure 😅
@@KamaniBrown Ok. I think about NTFS because I read on the bottom (in video) read only. Yea, HD normally needs more power than SSD. In early times, they were coming with y cables. In total 3 Ports. 1 Port on HD side and 2 ports on PC side. 1 Port for data and 1 Port for Power only. Kind regards
@@sandorfriederich I completely understand bro. Thanks for the insight. But yea… based on this revelation, the mechanical hard drive is the least practical solution out of the bunch unless it’s what you have and on a tight budget.
Gracias por el video, tal vez sea obvio pero ¿se mantienen los formatos de IOS? Estaría padre que; pudiera sacarlo de mi iPhone y usarlo en mi PC con Windows ¿saben si es posible?
Hello my friend and thanks for watching. But if I am correct, you are asking if specifically the pictures are copied over in the standard HEIC Apple format which is not quite universal VS the universally used JPEG format? If so, then once you select “copy” and then paste the pictures over just like how I show in the video, then it will be copied in JPEG format which can be used on your Windows PC and virtually any other device. However, if you are selecting multiple file types (for example pictures and videos) at the same time, then the “copy” function would not be available and you will have to select the “share to” option instead which will copy over all files in their original format. Hopefully that helps but if you need further clarification, please don’t hesitate to ask!
@@RaceCafe thanks bro! It is indeed something that I highly advise any and everyone to be aware of doing. Nothing beats having local copies and control over your data.
Yes my friend you can select multiple videos and pictures at the same time and copy them over using this same method. I show this in my follow up video here: ua-cam.com/video/Ug7Aolot1Jw/v-deo.html
Is there a way to record directly to the external storage? I have an iPhone 14 Pro Max 128gb and i want to record ProRes 4k 60fps in an external storage
Unfortunately there’s no way to record directly to external storage with any iPhone below the iPhone 15 Pro. So you’ll only be able to record to the phone storage, then copy to the external storage device as shown in my video.
If the SSD adaptor housing has an external power port you are in the game. If not knowing where the power is inserted via the cable feeding the drive you could add an isolation diode to the power contacts and add an additional DC jack to the drive and power it with an external 5 volt supply that can provide at least two amps of power. Be careful of polarity and add the isolation diode in a location where the power on the USB port comes into the drive housing and before it feeds into the interface circuit for the drive.
Thanks bro. I see you know your stuff! 😎. I guess you’re more referring to HDD drives or faster, more power hungry SSD’s since the SSD I used in the video worked just fine. But this a workaround I’ll definitely keep a record of. Thanks again my friend 🍻.
You don’t have to eject any of your drives from the phone. Once you’re done copying to and/or reading from it, all you have to do is pull it out. And yes it is perfectly ok for long use. Use it for as long as you want/need just like with using your computer.
Thank you a billion as well my friend 😁 🍻. Glad I could help! I did a follow up update video as well that may help you some more with further details here: ua-cam.com/video/Ug7Aolot1Jw/v-deo.html
Thanks, I didn't know this was possible. I can still get photos and videos off my iphone by plugging it into my PC but I've still got iTunes on the PC. That requires me to confirm I 'Trust this computer' by re-entering my phone's security code. Once I do that, I can then open the folders under DCIM in Windows Explorer and drag off any photos or videos I'm after. I don't think iTunes is available to download any longer though.
Indeed my friend and thanks for watching 🍻. That was the tried n true way… but just like you said Apple is slowly moving away from that and it’s getting less straightforward to do so, not to mention you still need a PC. This method is simple plug and play (after formatting the storage device appropriately… unless you’re using a SD card), and can be done on the go from virtually anywhere at any time.
It’s the same procedure as shown in the video. The only thing you will need to do additional is select all the photos/files you need to copy. The time it will take will depend on the size of the files and amount you are copying. I had only shown 1 picture as an example because watching me copy hundreds and thousands of photos at once in a video will be like watching paint dry 😆.
Yes it’s perfectly fine. Remember you are copying to the external storage. So it will be both on your flash drive and the phone when you are done. So you can delete from your phone anytime you want afterwards no worries 😊
Glad you asked that my friend. I actually did a video showing a perfect setup for the iPhone 15 series right here: ua-cam.com/video/2ZQmgR8utA4/v-deo.html I’m actually also creating a video right now compiling basically all ways to save files from your iPhone to virtually any usb storage device from old to current iPhones… so you can sub for that too if you’d like 🍻
So helpful thank you! But what if I want to transfer 30k plus videos and pictures from iPhone to my external hard drive (seagate) what would be the best way? Would I need to use a PC or Mac? Could you make a video on that please ?🙏🙏🙏
So would I have to manually select all my pics/videos in my photos library to transfer to drive ? Or is there a way I can select them all at once? Thank you again!
Thanks for watching 😊. But for the external hard drive to work, you will need a powered USB hub like this 1: amzn.to/3MlMbdr Connect the hard drive to it, then come to external power to the powered usb hub, then connect it to the same usb3.0 to lightning camera adapter that was used in the video (linked here and in description: amzn.to/3tXG4Fv ), then also connect external power to that, then you should be good to go
I can’t believe I never looked up the camera adapter. I thought it was for cameras. I should’ve known since there’s a usb port. Do you know anything about the other adapter that only has the usb port?
Lol it was the same for me too 😂. But desperate times called for desperate measures and it works like a charm! I don’t own the other adapter with the usb port only but my guess is that it’s not as versatile and maybe only works with flash drives at best and maybe a few low powered SSDs.
So it didn’t recognize my 1tb Samsung SSD drive, but had a 256gb jump drive and I can see that one, after selecting all pictures how do you get the option to copy?? I get it if I select 1 picture and then paste it, but for all 4000 selected hmm don’t see the copy option??
For it to recognize your SSD please ensure to format the drive first to “exFAT” format using a PC or Mac. Afterwards, when connecting it to the dongle and the iPhone, ensure that you also connect a good enough power source. As for the photos, try to copy them in batches of a few hundred or so. I’ve never tried to copy as much as 4000 all at once. Also you have 2 ways to copy the files… 1 is to select copy and then paste it, the other is by using the “share” option that does a direct 1:1 copy of the file to the drive.
So an SSD is a little box of external storage just like an SD card or a Flash Drive but with a much higher storage capacity so you're getting terabytes of storage rather than gigabytes correct? Just wanna make sure I get it. So if I were to start a YT channel using my phone to film, I would need to clear the photos off my phone to give me room for filming projects..How many 1 hour videos could I have stored on my phone before I would need to transfer them to external storage?? Approximately (I know the phone model and file sizes and other factors matter, but just as a general guess) I just want an idea of what I'm getting into..haha! Am I going to end up with hundreds of SSDs? haha
Well it all depends on several factors my friend. What model iPhone are you using? If it’s an iPhone 15 or 16 Pro you can film directly to the SSD. Also once you get a SSD in excess of at least 1 terabyte, that will give you enough space for hundreds of videos (depending on length and chosen video quality/format). As for how many videos and pics your iPhone can store locally, that all depends on the specific storage capacity your phone currently has. It also depends on how much iCloud storage you use. It may seem like a lot to consider 😅… but it really isn’t. Once you get going, it’ll all click. Also congratulations on starting your UA-cam journey! 🍻. All the best and most importantly have fun!
You’re most welcome and thanks for watching 😊. Unfortunately, you won’t be able to edit off the external storage. You can only copy/move files to and from the external storage. So you will have to copy the files to the iPhone to edit in CapCut on the iPhone.
Well you have 2 ways to copy photos and videos that affect the formats differently. The first method is as I showed in the video where you select them, copy, and then go into the files app and paste them into the external storage media that you choose… this method will change photos from HEIC/HEVC to the universally recognized JPEG so that the photo may be easily viewed and manipulated on pretty much any other device without fail. I chose this method to show specifically in the video to make things easier for most people. The second method is to copy via the share button where rather than selecting “copy”, you will select “share” and then “save to files”. This will take you directly to the files app where you can select the storage device to copy your photos/videos or any file type for that matter. This method will directly copy/share your file to the external storage device in its original format with no change, no downsampling, no nothing… just a direct 1:1 copy of the original file. Video formats and other file types will remain the same no matter what method you choose to copy them… only photos are really affected by the method.
That’s strange. I’ve never encountered such an issue. Did you copy the photos exactly how I showed in the video? Because if you did, they would be copied in JPEG format. But if you shared it to the storage device by using the share button, it will be copied in the original HEIF format which may give issues with trying to view on Windows PC.
About that wd drive that you can only read from, maybe the file system on it can’t be written from the iPhone. Maybe you can check it in a Mac if you can write on it. Edit: seems the formatting of the wd drive is ok and the solution is using a powered usb hub.^^ I would airdrop those photos, videos from iphone to a Mac and write them from the Mac to an external drive. I would only use an iPhone if I have an apple ecosystem (like having a Mac, iPad, watch etc), otherwise I’m happy using android (pixel, Samsung, Motorola etc).
Thanks for watching 🍻. The WD external drive was formatted appropriately to exFAT, the issue was that it wasn’t getting enough power (she a energy guzzler 😆)… so apparently I needed a powered usb hub for it to work. And yes my friend Air Drop is indeed faster and easier, but there are many situations like my job for example where that isn’t an option and you need to backup your data directly from the iPhone itself. Plus there are a lot of people out there that still don’t own a Mac but have an iPhone 😅.
@@KamaniBrown Thank you for your reply. i saw that many people told you about the formatting of the WD drive and you answered back that formatting was ok and you solved with a "powered usb hub".
Do I have to have an SSD drive or can I get an HDD? I am confused about the differences and which is better for backing up my iphone photos to an external hard drive
Thanks for tuning in 😊. But I would recommend either a USB drive or a SSD. The regular HDD will require a powered usb hub and is much slower. You can also use the the lightning to SD card reader as well as shown in this video: ua-cam.com/video/p4urlGjFZAU/v-deo.html. Hoping this helps.
Funny thing: my reel was taking 40GB on my iphone. I saved all photos and videos to an external ssd with „save to files”. After completing everything was only 16GB. Every picture was saved in original resolution and size. Videos were converted to Quicktime. Did that make such a big difference? most of the files were pictures.
Hey your comment seems a bit confusing 😅. Are you saying that you only were able to save 16 gigs? And were you able to get that reel off to save the 40GB? Maybe I’m misunderstanding something here 🤔
Although you are demonstrating with an iPhone; what about for a Samsung Galaxy 8 which does not use a lightening plug as you have shown with that iPhone.
Samsung Galaxy 8 fossil dinosaur >>> modern iPhone. Take that external drive and slam it directly into your Galaxy and watch that Neanderthal phone spin up and read/write to that mechanical HDD with barely a shrug 😆
@@johanessurabaya5109 maybe you can, however you will have to format the drive to exFAT and you most definitely will need to connect power to it as well

Is there anyway to transfer your music from iTunes to a flash drive? Thanks!
I'm sorry...I should have been more clear. I'm trying to copy the music from iTunes on my iPhone to a flash drive...Thanks!

@@minnieriley8938 You’re most welcome my friend 🍻. Thanks for watching!
I.
Had this problem and when I format the hard drive on the phone. After that , it worked fine
Thanks for tuning in my friend and I’m glad I could help 🍻. I believe there’s always a way to do anything without breaking the bank 🤭
Thank you for explaining how why extra power is needed to power up the external hard drive. I didn't realize this. Great video.
You’re welcome and thanks for watching 😊

You’re most welcome. Glad I could help! 🍻

Otherwise, I’m returning the 512GB.
But not sure what to get instead. The 32GB only transferred 10 videos, but I need to get 4000 videos off my phone :(

Can you instruct me on how to save photos in batches?
Sure! When in your photo gallery, simply press “select” and then pick all the photos (and even videos) that you want to copy… then press the share option and then press “copy”. Then you go to the files app, select the storage device and paste just like in the video. For ease of reference though, you can watch this update video I made recently that shows me copying multiple photos (and video) at once: ua-cam.com/video/Ug7Aolot1Jw/v-deo.html
As a side note, you can also quickly and easily select multiple pictures and videos at once after pressing “select” in the top right corner of your gallery, then selecting a picture/video, then keep your finger on that selected pic/video and then dragging your fingers across and down to quickly select a ton of them at once.

Hi Kamani, do you have to format the external drive first, also are you able to view apple photos on a windows pc, many thanks
Hello my friend. Yes I recommend that you format the drive to exFAT format using a PC or Mac first for best results. And yes you will indeed be able to view the Apple photos on a windows PC. There are 2 ways you may be able to view them:

Hi, i think if you should format the hard drive in exFAT format, it will allow you to read and write. Other formats allows you to read only mode
Thanks my friend. But it was already formatted in exFAT. I found out the real issue is that it needed a powered usb hub to fully work because it demands so much power.
@@KamaniBrown oh i see! So it seems i need to get a powerful usb hub! Thanks by the way.
@@Dina-ug6bq yea bro! But you need it ONLY for the regular mechanical hard drive. You don’t need it for a SSD or USB drive.
Wah Gawn 😊
I have like 14 years of pictures to transfer. It’s clogging up my phone storage. I had a flash drive. But they are so easy to lose
With this process, you will be sending any file type directly from the iPhone to the external storage.
maybe the Format of HD NTFS because of that only Reading (WD)
Thanks for watching bro but the HD was indeed formatted to the correct exFAT format, however, I later discovered from the help of other viewers that I would need a powered usb hub for that particular type of storage drive to work.
it's good to find solution 🤩 @@KamaniBrown
That’s amazing. Can we also copy from pendrive to iPhone also in the same manner?
For this purpose, I recommend this Samsung SSD drive: amzn.to/3YkWIdy
Thanks for tuning in my friend 🍻.

Thanks for the hint. The iCloud backups the whole phone, also contacts etc. Can this also be done to an SSD?
Not exactly my friend… it’s more to manually backup music, photos, videos, documents and other general files. To backup your user settings, apps, contacts, events, and other user data will require a 3rd party application or for you to use a Mac or PC to manually copy your iCloud backup to the SSD.
I think on the Apple phones, do you have to buy the Apple cord?

Sure my friend glad to help. Since you seem to backup a lot of data fairly frequently, I would recommend getting a fairly large capacity SSD such as this 1:
amzn.to/46U4wpb
and use the lightning to USB adapter as shown in the video and you’ll be good to go! Just make sure to format the new SSD in exFAT format using your PC or Mac before first use and then you’ll be able to use it across as many devices you like for backups and copying.
Do u have to download a software for this or app. My phone can’t do that trying to save my photos and videos for it
@@chickenlil241 no you don’t need to download any 3rd party app. It is done by natively using the files app that comes with your iPhone. Let’s try some troubleshooting:

Also you can use SD cards as well as I show in these videos:
1. ua-cam.com/video/QuGoRzGLDvs/v-deo.html
2. ua-cam.com/video/p4urlGjFZAU/v-deo.html
Hi! Is there an option to select all videos and photos to copy and save them to the hard drive? Doing it one by one would cost so much time. Thanks!
Hoping this helps and thanks for tuning in 😊.
if this was easy to be done apple wouldnt have created icloud
Cant wait to give it a try! Does it work with transferring AAE files such as Iphone files that have been edited? I noticed they don't transfer onto not apple computers.
It works with any file type you have stored on your iPhone just like copying files on your PC or Mac.

Thanks for your input my friend. But I think the current format is exFAT 😅 and you are indeed correct about the speed. All in all though I don’t recommend using the regular mechanical HDD for this method because it’s just not worth the hassle.
I didn't understand where is the lightning cable getting it's power from
I only had to add additional power for the SSD and HDD.

What is the advantage of using this lightning drive over just putting a SSD adapter straight into the iPhone that's the big question? Is this faster?
The older iPhone series (below the new 15 series) does not allow direct lightning to usb c connection to SSDs… not only that, but you will need additional external power to activate and access the SSD. That’s where this device shown in the video comes in.

So here are a few things I suggest:
1. Use a higher power supply like 30 watts and up (a more powerful power brick with the same usb c cable should work fine)
2. If you haven’t already, test the hard drives on a computer to see if they are still working properly (keeping my fingers crossed 🤞🏾 that they’re not de@d)
3. The last resort If possible, is to try and acquire or borrow a SSD or flash drive big enough to hold the data, copy the data to it, then use that instead. Hello, Thank you for the video. The SSD you used is different from the link provided. Please can advice on the cheaper and reliable SSD. Thanks
Here is a cheaper option from another trusted brand: amzn.to/3E0xnMp
However, you will need to get the USB C to USB A cable or adapter separately. The one I originally recommended comes with everything you need and is also from a trusted and reliable brand (Samsung) plus it will also be faster when using or transferring back to a PC or Mac later on.

Unfortunately no. iTunes is a bit more complicated. You’ll have to convert the music from iTunes to mp3 first before attempting to copying them over.

@@vradamusic do you mean how to copy files from the iPhone to external storage device?

I think iTunes can be downloaded from microsoft App Store.
@@tomswan3401 I believe you may be right. Which is funny and ironic that it’s easier to find Apple software on a Microsoft platform 😆
Can you show how to back up all photos on iPhone. So could be 1000’s.
So it’s ok to delete from my phone once transferred to the flash drive?
Yes it’s perfectly fine. Remember you are copying to the external storage. So it will be both on your flash drive and the phone when you are done. So you can delete from your phone anytime you want afterwards no worries 😊
What is available for the newer iPhone with a usb c connection
Glad you asked that my friend. I actually did a video showing a perfect setup for the iPhone 15 series right here: ua-cam.com/video/2ZQmgR8utA4/v-deo.html

Is there an adapter where iI can do a photo and video backup on an SD card instead?
Sure there is. Here’s the lightning to SD card reader: amzn.to/3QYB0c2
I also made a video using it here:

thank you for sharing with us :)
is it possible to edit in capcut app straingt from external storage or have to upload it on iphone before?
You’re most welcome and thanks for watching 😊. Unfortunately, you won’t be able to edit off the external storage. You can only copy/move files to and from the external storage. So you will have to copy the files to the iPhone to edit in CapCut on the iPhone.
@@KamaniBrown thank You 👋🏻
@@DomiCrawford you’re most welcome. Happy to help 😊
once moved to all the different external drives that you showed, is it safe to delete off of my phone?
Yes it most certainly is safe to do so because by then you’ve already successfully copied them.
When a photo or video taken by iOS is copied into the external media, is the copied file a HEIC/HEVC file, or a downsampled PNG/JPG/MOV file?
You know a program to organise photo on win11, i drag photo from iphone xr, i see only rotate pictures, and strange number folder???
That’s strange. I’ve never encountered such an issue. Did you copy the photos exactly how I showed in the video? Because if you did, they would be copied in JPEG format. But if you shared it to the storage device by using the share button, it will be copied in the original HEIF format which may give issues with trying to view on Windows PC.
About that wd drive that you can only read from, maybe the file system on it can’t be written from the iPhone. Maybe you can check it in a Mac if you can write on it. Edit: seems the formatting of the wd drive is ok and the solution is using a powered usb hub.^^
I would airdrop those photos, videos from iphone to a Mac and write them from the Mac to an external drive.
You can also use the the lightning to SD card reader as well as shown in this video:
ua-cam.com/video/p4urlGjFZAU/v-deo.html.
Maybe I’m misunderstanding something here 🤔
Wow! Thank you so much.. you just gain another follower here.. thank you so much.
You’re most welcome! Thank you so much for tuning in 😊
Although you are demonstrating with an iPhone; what about for a Samsung Galaxy 8 which does not use a lightening plug as you have shown with that iPhone.
Samsung Galaxy 8 fossil dinosaur >>> modern iPhone. Take that external drive and slam it directly into your Galaxy and watch that Neanderthal phone spin up and read/write to that mechanical HDD with barely a shrug 😆
i have iphone 11 ..can i use ssd enclosure m2 nvme u green usb type c3.1 with this device ?
@@johanessurabaya5109 maybe you can, however you will have to format the drive to exFAT and you most definitely will need to connect power to it as well
@@KamaniBrowni tried in and it can read my ssd green in my file manager..but cant open it…my iphone then blackout
