  • In this video, I discuss my secret to success with catching FREE SWARMS! There’s a slight science to it, and once you put all the ingredients together, you are likely to catch a swarm any time there’s one in the area of your trap. Follow these steps and you too can successfully catch free bees! It’s weirdly similar to fishing, or like winning a raffle prize.
    I’m always like OMG the bees chose ME!?
    Thanks for watching and please subscribe for more 😊

    I sooooo wish I could try this but here in NYC, I've been told its not going to happen> Swarms are very controlled here due to the crowd numbers. But I guess I will never know until I try right?

      Wouldn’t hurt to try! And when it comes to getting caught, don’t ask for permission, just ask for forgiveness 😊

    Good info. I'm putting things together to get started beekeeping this coming spring I'm building swarm traps and found I can get 3 out of a sheet of 1/2 inch plywood. I bought 1 deep and 1 super with the base and lids and thought it would be cheaper to buy a table saw and make my own I plan on building 8 complete hives but only starting with 4 colonies and if I catch any or do a split I'll be ready

      Good deal!
      One thing to consider, is you can save money (and your back) by making your swarm traps out of something thinner like 1/4” or 5/16” plywood, because you just need to catch the bees, they won’t live in there long. But dang, some 1/2” traps oughta last you pretty much forever 😅

      I just built 4- 5 frame deep nuc boxes with lids AND mounting stands for them out of 1- 4×8 sheet of 17/32 plywood.

    I see you paint the swarm traps various colors. Any color preference to the bees, or it doesn't matter when it comes to the box color.
    You do make good educating videos.

    • @brownsbeefarm
      @brownsbeefarm  Рік тому +1

      Thank you Shane!
      And no reason for the colors, other than I find them on sale at Home Depot and if it’s an exterior paint and primer that was mis-tinted, and someone has returned it, it will usually be 50% off or more. So sometimes I’ll find a quart or gallon of paint for a ridiculously cheap price.
      I’d say they definitely need to be able to sorta see it! I don’t think I’d want mine too camouflaged!

    So you are at Canyon Lake? I live down near Bay City. Do you put mesh inside the entrance to prevent critters from entering? I am going to try this next spring.

      I do not actually! Have had good luck so far. But a bird could always take it as their own before a swarm moves in…

    Do u ever use just plain lemongrass oil in your traps? Wondering if there's a real difference between it & swarm commander?

    • @brownsbeefarm
      @brownsbeefarm  Рік тому

      I personally never had success when I used LGO, but started using swarm commander and had quick results.
      With that being said, I also got better at building traps and had more combs available around the time I started using swarm commander, so who really knows.
      But I ALWAYS have a bottle of swarm commander laying around. In fact, it’s the time of year I need to put it in my car in case I need it while out and about.
