- German Chancellor Angela Merkel begs Germans to follow coronavirus restrictions in an unusually emotional appeal ahead of Christmas. She urged Germans to heed scientists' warnings and calls for stricter lockdown measures in a passionate speech: "Europe is where it is today thanks to the Enlightenment and the belief that there are scientific findings which are real and should be followed."

Coming from Sweden, words and actions like this from the government would be a blessing.
The German situation doesn´t look to bright at the moment but I have read some articles about Sweden and was quite shocked. I really hope you can get this under control. It is ironic how the Sars-Cov-2 deniers here in Germany always have referred to Sweden as long as all looked "fine" but know totally ignore your situation. Really hope we all overcome this. I am not German nor do I reside there, but everytime the Chancellor delivers her speech, I feel deeply touched by the tremendous amount of empathy and thought she has put in her duty. She may not be perfect but she's definitely one of the few leaders who actually thinks before leaping.

She is a trained scientist, can do the math, understands how exponential growth overwhelms finite resources, understands how complicated it is to do things 3 weeks in advance before you see any effects, and can express it in simple terms.

Not really the case unfortunately. She only listens ro the same scientists all the time and dismisses the havoc lockdowns cause.
The government failed to rake on any sound strategy in summer for winter and pur all its eggs into the vaccine basket.
This is now backfiring.
The consequences will last and affect the health and sanity of many for years to come while lockdowns are known to have little impact. Corrwlating figures will be presented once more .....

A leader showing empathy and emotion in the face of such devastating loss of human life is a good thing, this is them showing there humanity there understanding of the situation - has NOTHING to do with humans having any monopoly on the ability to feel emotion - clearly not all humans have that, one just has to look at the leader of America to see the stark difference, he has not an ounce of empathy towards his own people who have suffered and died, he is a human being bereft of any measure of feeling for another living thing human or other.

I have family there I have never met. I wish I could move there. Things are so bad here in the US for so many millions. Bernie said many times it’s probably something like a 150 million Americans that are struggling, living paycheck to paycheck and even worse have no paycheck at all, while the rich get obsenely richer.

not to mention if you are out of work sick or injured for many weeks, it may pay up to 100% of pay for some of those weeks and maybe about 80. % after that, America usually only pays about 40 to 60%, not to mention free to low cost college or university.education, do you have maternity leave or regular sick days too? They don’t have any of this in America unless a company choses to offer it. Heard germany even paid unemployment to prostitutes that weren’t finding work, nothing like that here.

@@chia4281 In my country 2000 death with the virus since March. Mind you average age of death is 81. Suicide increased 590 last month alone comparing to November 2019. There is a correlation between the recession and the number of suicides as well as crime rates.
@@speedbird006 Suicide is affected by many factors. I'd say it's more of a social thing than economic. Most normal people dont just suicide because they have no money in their pocket. If people in your country feel so cornered that they decided suicide is better than living on, you might want to check if your country is treating its people properly.

Last spring when Germany listened to her and Dr. Drosten, the country was the biggest nation with good efficiency in pandemic management.
After people switched to those Querdenker and right wing views, everything went down the drain with neck breaking speed.
Again most people follow the rules. This is a very small minority that get's all the media attention. The problem was travelling in summer and that we have so many neighbours. Also we couldn't afford another hard lockdown so infections happen at schools and at work

She was talking about the traditional Christmas Markets on the street allowing people to mingle, instead of just work on takeout system, as government advised. She fears that if people won’t cooperate, children will have to be at home from the 16th for the holidays, and not on 19th. And even so, she fears that this action won’t be effective to save lives - mostly grampa and gramma lives, who are isolated and will get in contact with infected people.
