I am German, and I live near the biggest refugee camp in the country. I work in hospital, and once a week the new refugees come for a health check. Believe me, 90% of these people come straight out of war torn countries. Their stories give me night mares sometimes. They‘ve travelled for weeks with broken bones, gun shot wounds, cancer, painful kidney stones, etc. etc.
I can‘t believe how many Americans can go to church, pray and don‘t understand a word about compassion and love.

Her whole speech was inspiring and to think this was just a commencement speech at Harvard. Like I have heard some of her other speeches and this woman is amazing. She makes human, caring, and loving decisions and one decision that led to an issue was her decision to let refugees into her country which America replays the Nazi story every generation until every single man, woman, child, and dog knows the story, and people in her country no longer wanted her to be Chancellor, even though she continues to try to showcase that Germany does not equal Hitler/Nazi Germany. This woman is the smartest politician yet and she does not get the respect she deserves!

I´m German, not a fan of the conservative CDU, her party, they aren´t doing enough against climate change and are way, way too pro corporation. I have been voting for the Left or for The Green Party my whole life...but I respect her and I appreciate that I can live in a democratic system in which we fight about political disagreements with words, fact and argument. This was a good speech and I can sign everything that she has said and I can admit that even though I mostly disagree with her about political topics. I would never insult anoyone for disagreeing with me and that´s the political culture we have to reclaim again otherwise our children will grow up in a very ugly and cold world.

Far fewer people get killed or injured here in Germany (also per percent population) than in the USA. I spent much of my career ensuring that municipal waste water went back into our rivers cleaner than it was when it was first used. I felt like that was a satisfyingly green and beneficial to society activity. It did not make me rich, but it did make life better for those in my city, and those down stream.
I would happily live in a developing economy where my skills could be used to improve life by providing clean water and sewer services.
Making the world better is very rewarding.

Angela Merkel in my personal view was not one of the best politicians, she made some devestating descisions, but in all honesty, all politicians make some errors now and then...
I think she made some errors when coping with the financial collapse of 2007.
But I can give her this: She was a strong leading voice in Europe, and helped making the EU a force that is respected at the negotiation table with other countries in a good way, but with grace, only being an iron fist when needed.

Actually I think Germany is heading in the other direction. Green and left are by far the most strongest parties for voters younger than 30 years. This was shown by statistics of the last few elections (EU and Bundestag). Gladly Germany isn't like UK these days. But I agree, there is a risk in general for heading into a right spiral.
