I still prefer the rp4 pro with grip over odin 2 but bigger screen is better for me. (got a deck but too big to haul at times)
You're one of the only reviewers i know who talks about the odin 2 mini and one of the first to compare it to the rp5. So thank you!!! Im on the fence. I was deciding between the RP4 Pro and the RG556 for a week or two. Luckily I waited, this seems (nearly) the best of both worlds. Definitely my one and done secondary device after the Steam Deck. Nice review!
When I set up my Retroid Pocket 3 Flip the first time, it took me all evening. Compared to about 20mins in Miyoo Mini or RG35XX devices with Onion/Garlic or even Batecera. Andriod devices is doable, but certainly not easy.
Curious I've been shopping for a handheld and I think I'm just going to buy a steam deck. There a reason you even wanted this device? Is it because of the size vs the steam deck?
@chaoticzer0 actually more so the screen than anything I dont have a deck oled and I really like how dim the screen gets on this for late night before bed. Honestly if u just want 1 handheld go with the deck i think its great to have one pc handheld and one smaller handheld like this
@@chaoticzer0 Steam deck is BIG AF... I love it, but I honestly rarely use mine now. When I got it, I was bringing it everywhere... it was a honeymoon phase lol. It's still wonderful, a beast, but it's simply SO EFFING BIG. It all comes down to what you want to do. If you want to play PC games, you really don't have a choice. However, I started thinking after a while "do I ACTUALLY want to play PC games on the go?..." And, yes, I do, but at what cost? I can have a Anbernic RG35XXSP in my pocket all the time, or this Retroid 5 in a small case, or my STEAM DECK taking up 20% of my suit case on a trip... And let me tell you, it's SO much easier to bust an SP or anything smaller out when you're waiting on a plane or a bus or an oil change or whatever than it is to bust out a steam deck. Bringing a steam deck somewhere is a COMMITMENT. Bringing a Miyoo mini or something isn't even a decision - you just do it because there's literally no reason not to. However, you pay for that in the amount of power/types of games it can run. I personally think the retroid 5 is a wonderful spot where, if you really want to have some nice gaming with you when you go somewhere, you can for a small commitment bring a really nice device that will give you up to PS2 and gamecube. Accompany it with a small pocket-every-day device like a miyoo mini and all of a sudden you're gaming whenever you want without a care in the world.
To take advantage of wifi7, you would need a compatible router, hence why you're not getting any significant performance improvement on the odin 2 mini.
Just wish they made a SKU with the analog stick up top, as it gets more powerful and touches android gaming and possibly Steam games, I feel like that might be necessary. Maybe a 5+ with different stick layout and SD888 would be ideal. That or the Odin 2 Mini having the same 5.5 AMOLED
You say power is not as much of an influence when comparing the rp5 and odin2mini, and don't get me wrong I know they're in different price brackets, but I would still say there's a significant power difference between the sd865 and the 8gen2.
Yes I agree, but I am talking in the context of emulation, for $100 less, I don't think people should be making the power bump a significant deciding factor.
The standby mode is the problem. Battery life seems great in real life but I am running a proper test next week and we will see. I am going to ask a few UA-camr friends what they think a good battery life should be for this battery size as well. Just so I get a good metric for viewers.
This looks really nice, but the stick layout is not for me, I have the RG503 in my collection and just cannot not get on with it, whereas the RG cube I can.
Steam on android would be the dream, all valve would need to do is allow publishers to port to Android and a lot would since they already have arm versions working for Mac, windows, and switch

Great video, Adin! Question for you, my fellow Darkwing enthusiast. When you are playing D-pad centric games, do the joysticks directly under the D-pad and facebuttons get in the way? I play a lot of fighting games and 2d platformers, I am concerned it will be uncomfortable to use with the controller setup. Thank you, sir. 🍻
It's hard to explain here but if you're the sort of player whose thumbs are more vertical than sideways (the way I explained it in the vid) then you may have an issue.
So glad you got this! I was really interested in your perspective. Small feedback: Your auto focus or head tracking or something on your talking head shot is kinda jumpy in this video in a way that I found distracting. Something to think about next video.
Ah dude. You're killing me. I was hoping it wasn't noticeable. I hoped I was just being obsessive. It's unfortunately an issue with the camera. I am in the process of getting something else
Ordered mine yesterday, hope it gets here before Christmas lol. I’ve never bought from China, so I hope it doesn’t take too long to get from there to the uk lol
@ yeah I read that usually dhl takes around 4 to 5 days to ship from China to the uk, but I’m not expecting that quick of a delivery because as you said, they need to get all the other orders out too. I’m just hoping I don’t have to wait 3 months as it says on retroid that shipping can be between 15 to 90 days… which yeah I’m not too impressed with the 90 day figure lol.
I dont recall this on the video, but on the comparison to the RP Mini and the RP5 Madden 2005 test, both devices are using a different version of android which could impact performance aside from the difference in RAM. Hopefully once android 13 becomes available for RP Mini, we can check as to whether there is any differences or more of the same to what was shown on video.
Possible but A13 will slow the RP Mini down even more overall so it would be interesting to test. Retroid aren't doing an official A13 release for the mini though.
I wouldn’t be surprised if over the next week we see a lot of RP5 v Odin 2 comparison videos coming out, probably the most common question being asked right now.
@RetroGamerDesigns funny enough I think most reviewers are looking at other comparisons. That being said, my video for Monday/Tuesday is Odin 2 min vs RP5 hehe
I have a question, so are these devices that not just you but other content creators are reviewing not "finished" devices? I have been hearing about waiting for retail devices to come out? sorry if my question doesn't make sense.
Yes you are making sense. We all got "pre-production" units meaning there was a short run of devices before they took orders. This can sometimes be a bad thing and I usually warn viewers to be careful of doing pre-orders but there were so few reports of issues I didn't feel the need to make a big deal of it this time round. Long answer to say, I do think a pre-order will be "safe".
Im pretty sure Retroid and Ayn are owned by the same parent company. Which makes sense, cause it seems like the devices are attempting to hit different preferences
New to this space and interested in jumping in. My question is, can a SteamDeck emulate everything this unit can? What’s the primary difference between the two units? Thank you.
The primary and difference is size and operating system. The Steamdeck is more powerful as well. And then the obvious thing is that Steamdeck has Steam games.
ETA Prime said the face buttons are dome switches, they are rubber membrane right? I'd like to see it next to RP3+, i need an upgrade, want to know the size.
I jumped on a 405M for 75$ for the reason it is awesome and cheap. I'll grab the RP5 for the wide screen games and heavy PS2 games a few years from now. I really would not see myself play anything under GC on the RP5 anyway.
That is a great price and I think it may have been one of my second hand pics. I played through God of War PS2 on it and with the mmjr version of Citra and dolphin you can play alot of games with it.
I decided to get the rp4pro. The rp5 looks kind of generic and it's a bit too big for any of my pockets. God I wish the mini had a 4" screen. Love retroid pocket!
@PInoyHenyoRito I had the extra $25 but the buttons are too loud. Glass front is a finger print magnet, don't like seeing reflections when I'm trying to play a game. Mostly it looks generic. Mini with a 4 inch display is my dream device... Except for the loud face buttons.
Pity they put the left analogue stick at the bottom, fair enough on the Mini but this is more of a Gamecube/PS2/PSP device, the Dpad won't be required much.
In your humble opinion, would you purchase a grip that gives it more extended handlebars? I don't know if it's in the works. I needed it for the 4 and since I ordered the case with the 5, I hope you don't need it. I have them on my Switch and find it unplayable without it (satisfye).
Hey there on paper there isn't a big difference but due to the compatibility of Snapdragon and the use of custom drivers you end up with better performance overall.
I really don’t get what’s to be upset about with the changes from RP4 to RP5. They seem like great improvements across the board. I just miss all those transparent colors 😂
This is my thing with the pocket 5. I can't justify it because of the Steam deck and other pc handhelds. The pocket mini makes sense to me. I personally feel gaming wise. Im a handheld person. I like a larger handheld and truely pocket handheld. Pocket 5 isn't pocketable if you ask me. The mini is pocketable and makes for a nice true pocket handheld.
I own the retroid pocket 4 pro and the only reason I'd consider buying this new one would be if it ran the while Switch catalog. Otherwise, it would be senseless to "improve".
There's not a massive performance jump BUT with the Turnip drivers and the general improved compatibility, it's actually a pretty big difference practically
Hey Adin, just watched the video and overall I thought it was pretty informative. I did want to mention something about your comment regarding the difficulty of setting up Retroids. I get that it might be more involved than some UA-camrs let on, but saying that you "categorically know" it's a mission and seemingly calling out a another content creator feels a bit dismissive. I think this is more of a subjective matter than objective and I don't want to see you get into any drama. Wanted to write this up because you've said similar things in the past and I am concern it might alienate not only your audience but other retro handheld reviewers.
Hey there. I disagree. For me this is a pretty straightforward fact rather than a subjective issue. Setting Android up manually without the system that Anbernic have set it place (which is also flawed) is always difficult and time consuming and I feel I owe it to viewers to point that out. Maybe you can change my mind, but I get regular comments from disillusioned new owners who thought the setup process would be way easier. Some people even send their devices back or sell them. These are the people I have in mind when saying this. Also, I never called the content creator out by name.
@@adinwalls I feel like the way it was phrased, contrasting it with another UA-camr's experience, could potentially come across as a bit of a call-out, even if unintentional. This is the internet after all and people will connect the dots. They're gonna find who you are talking about or who they think you're talking about. If that is your intention, I think you should voice your feedback directly to them. Maybe you could draw comparison to devices that provide an easier setup to show your point rather than a call-out. Just some friendly feedback! Keep up the awesome work.
@@MetroUI The guy who he's calling out is RetroGameCorps... which is stupid because RetroGameCorps goes through the entire process of setting up. Regardless if he said it was not difficult, he left enough information for the viewers to make an inform decision.

@RetroGamerDesigns funny enough I think most reviewers are looking at other comparisons. That being said, my video for Monday/Tuesday is Odin 2 min vs RP5 hehe
@@adinwallsI’ll be watching !!
Odin 2 mini or Retroid pocket 5? Stumped love the amoled screen but also love the button layout of the Odin 2 mini
If you have the money get the O2M
Can I ask how you streamed your steam games to it Adin? Nvidea Gforce?
I have a question, so are these devices that not just you but other content creators are reviewing not "finished" devices? I have been hearing about waiting for retail devices to come out? sorry if my question doesn't make sense.
Yes you are making sense. We all got "pre-production" units meaning there was a short run of devices before they took orders. This can sometimes be a bad thing and I usually warn viewers to be careful of doing pre-orders but there were so few reports of issues I didn't feel the need to make a big deal of it this time round. Long answer to say, I do think a pre-order will be "safe".
Is there a service to setup a decent sd card? I have NO time to set everything up! I just want to play
Hey there there are people on Etsy who do this
I'm waiting until more input latency tests come up before buying one for myself
How would one test Latency apart from just comparing gameplay to OG hardware?
Im pretty sure Retroid and Ayn are owned by the same parent company. Which makes sense, cause it seems like the devices are attempting to hit different preferences
Yes they are
I just needed a something that was smaller than legion go, switch etc to play ps2 games and here it is
I'd like a comparison between rp5 and rg406v, with a focus on Android gaming.
I have feeling the RP5 would win out
Can you test the dock input lag with the rp5
I may do that for my full review
Thank you!!
Ah...
The:
RP-5 = A-O2 PORTAL MINI...
🧐🤓🙃...
This is an amazing device... Rocking the Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 with cooling fan system...
@ thank you.
ETA Prime said the face buttons are dome switches, they are rubber membrane right? I'd like to see it next to RP3+, i need an upgrade, want to know the size.
Dpad is done, action buttons are membrane.
Which would you prefer for (mostly) 2D pixel-art games on switch? RP4 Pro or RP5?
Always opt for a Snapdragon chip for Switch. So the 5 is for you. I mean, the Pro may work but you have more assurance with the 5
I decided to get the rp4pro. The rp5 looks kind of generic and it's a bit too big for any of my pockets. God I wish the mini had a 4" screen. Love retroid pocket!
Thats ok if you dont have money
@PInoyHenyoRito I had the extra $25 but the buttons are too loud. Glass front is a finger print magnet, don't like seeing reflections when I'm trying to play a game. Mostly it looks generic. Mini with a 4 inch display is my dream device... Except for the loud face buttons.
Look at how powerful are android chipsets when they added a better cooling system.
I don't think a grip is in the works but if you're after ergonomics similar to a controller, this is not that
I'm still torn between the RP Mini & the RP5 just because of the lovely screen on the RP5 🙈😅
Performance-wise. Is it all that much better than the RP4P? I just got my RP4P not long ago...
No, they are very similar in that regard.
@@Watamel0n Cool, thanks for making me feel better about my purchase
@@erraddict no, problem ;)
Hey there on paper there isn't a big difference but due to the compatibility of Snapdragon and the use of custom drivers you end up with better performance overall.
I really don’t get what’s to be upset about with the changes from RP4 to RP5. They seem like great improvements across the board. I just miss all those transparent colors 😂
People don't like change I guess
May I ask which one is playing Better PS2 games. GR556 or Retroid Pocket 5
Retroid Pocket 5
This is my thing with the pocket 5. I can't justify it because of the Steam deck and other pc handhelds. The pocket mini makes sense to me. I personally feel gaming wise. Im a handheld person. I like a larger handheld and truely pocket handheld. Pocket 5 isn't pocketable if you ask me. The mini is pocketable and makes for a nice true pocket handheld.
12:52 (trying hard not to make a TWSS joke)
Can you try jak and daxter 3 and 2
I’d like to see that!
Should’ve ditch the LED on the thumbstick & move them near the center
For streaming steam deck, any luck with getting the deck to wake up when starting the stream, instead of manually turning it on?
Oh I haven't paid attention to that
@ I’d like to have the steam deck in a dock waiting for the 5 to wake it up, but I’ve only been able to stream by turning it on first
Okay I hear you. I have had it link up with the screen off but once it goes into sleep mode I don't think it registers the connection.
Great review! - thanks.
Looking forward to more Linux content (that's what I'll be using :) )
Okay cool. Definitely gonna look into that next. I started installing Rocknix but had some issues. Gonna get back to it soon.
Great - I think Batocera is better at this point, though.
20:10 you should have put the clip where Chandler got the laptop.... 12 MB OF RAM XDDD
Ah! Next time
EDC guy here that likes retro handhelds. What pocket knife is that?
Hehe. It's a Kershaw. American brand. Prob made in China 😀
For PS2 only its better choose Retroid 5 or retroid mini??
The mini has a very small screen. So if you want the perfect screen for PS 2 maybe look at an Anbernic device
I own the retroid pocket 4 pro and the only reason I'd consider buying this new one would be if it ran the while Switch catalog. Otherwise, it would be senseless to "improve".

I love this device❤ I want this
Get it.
Is this more powerful than an Odin 2?
No.
@alexanderfleming9104 Thanks.
I still haven't decide which color to buy!
I’m leaning towards the Indigo - GameCube style
Love your videos, could you make a seperate video about Turnip drivers?
Ah I don't know. Nor sure it has enough info for a full vid but I will include it in the full review.
Is there any history with Anbernic or Retro having black friday deals? I wasn't sure if you knew.
Not Retroid but I think Anbernic do.
@@adinwalls Thank you! Loving all of your in-depth reviews and tutorials!
Which sdcard do you recommend?
Ah you don't need to be too fussy. SanDisk to be safe
@adinwalls Thanks. Does it have to be an A2, U3?
@TomasSchertel gosh I don't know. Just a relatively fast card. It doesn't have to be one of the very expensive ones.
What do you think about D1100 vs SNAPDRAGON 865 CHIPSET PERFORMANCE?
There's not a massive performance jump BUT with the Turnip drivers and the general improved compatibility, it's actually a pretty big difference practically
@adinwalls THANK YOU
Which smartphone would you suggest to play PS2 games?budget around 200€(SNAPDRAGON CHIPSET)...THANKS 😁
Oh gosh I have no idea! You'd just have to check what chipset they're using and see if there's any emulation info on that chip
Does it play TOTK?
That's a Switch game right, I don't deal with that here. Sorry.
@MetroUI I am currently working on a replacement video to my Retroid pocket 4 Pro setup guide.
@@MetroUI The guy who he's calling out is RetroGameCorps... which is stupid because RetroGameCorps goes through the entire process of setting up. Regardless if he said it was not difficult, he left enough information for the viewers to make an inform decision.
Watching this waiting for my AYN Portal. I'm done with retroid, they're too small for me
Fair enough
Wanna see a generic design? The odin is a straight copy from the psp
“My fingers go around the bulge” 😢
It’s not affordable until 3-4 months from now $300+ is not low budget
This device isn't $300+
@ Where could I get it besides AliExpress for cheaper?.. It’s $300+ on there
@ AliExpress it’s $300+. Where can I get it cheaper?
@montlee1990 on retroids website. It's like 250 with shipping included where I live.
I just got used to my Retroid Pocket 3+. 😢
Hehe. The OG
Hehe. That's okay...... Sel it 👿
