petrol heads are rambling on abt who cares abt mileage when you hv so much money to spend, but theyre missing the point. this is an amazing technical achievement by porsche. the 918 showcases just how amazing the hybrid tech in this is. its a no nonsense hypercar that can outperform anything on the market, while while simultaneously be able toshow amazing effiency in its fuel usage. this car is the genesis of a new generation of vehicles to come.

First i loved the P1 over the 918, lightweigt, hybrid, awesome look. Then the Ferrari was announced, i thought wow, if they can bring the numbers to road, that will be hell of a car, better than the two others. But now, when i see that 918 finished, and i cant explain why, i think the Porsche is the best of these three (in my opinion). It's just an awesome complete, good looking, fast, and real hybrid car. It might not be as powerful as the P1 and LaF., but i think Porsche brings the best hydrid system, and thats why i belief that not the p1 and even not the LaF can beat Porsche on Nurburgring.

Mr. Leno. All I can say is WOW!
I have recently discovered that you have a wonderful collection of cars and motorcycles and this incredible website / channel. All I can say is you are my all time hero (and no I do not watch much television so forgive my ignorance).
What I love about you is that you are true to being real, you are (just like me) a little kid. I can hear and see the excitment in your presentations. What I love about your show is that it is not only about burn outs and top speed but that you research and discuss everything (the creators, designers, memorabilia, posters, books, trophies...) I am very impressed with your knowledge of the history, engineering and even creation of each vehicle you present. That to me is almost just as fun and interesting as seeing the cars in motion and listening to the music they make (I say music because of the guitar you had made... COOL!). I have learned so much about steam cars, electric cars, the classics, and on and on.
I have seen that you have been most fortunate to meet and speak with some of the creators of these beautiful automibles which I also find facinating. You are a very lucky man and generous to share these events with perfect strangers like myself.
Thank you for sharing your passion, your colllection and your freindships & encounters. I know you really don't have to but I am very grateful you chose to do this! I look forward to viewing many more videos.
On Jan 17, the Montreal(Quebec) auto show will be starting and I look forward to seeing some of your featured vehicles in real life. I know, it pales in comparison to your garage but we are not so automobile-blesed here in Quebec as you are in California.
Keep up the great work and thanks again!
P.S. When I retire, can I apply as a car washer???!!!
    Sincerely,
    Maurice

Really excited about this and the new McClaren P1 .Forget any environmental concerns with this "hybrid." The whole point of the electric engines in both these super-cars is pure performance improvement.
It's no surprise, really. Prototype Cars in Le Mans and F1 Cars now have electric engines, so they're effectively hybrids as well. It's really a wonder the electric engine as an assist didn't catch on sooner IMO. The electric engine can continue to provide power to the wheels while gear changes are made. Unlike a supercharger you won't suffer worse fuel economy and unlike a turbocharger there's no wait for the turbo to spin up. I imagine the electric engine can really assist in acceleration as well.
Engineering an electric engine into a car is like adding in a turbocharger or a supercharger: You've got a component that supplements the engine's power but adds weight and takes up space. And you can see how different companies economize the limits of weight and space.
Porsche decided to just have a big, naturally aspirated 4.6L engine in their Hybrid Supercar while McLauren had a smaller but still big twin turbo 3.8L Pairing electric engines with Turbo seems like a match made in heaven because you can get power from the electric engine while the turbos are spinning up.
I've heard that Nissan will be doing a Hybrid GTR. I hope so and I hope it's in the same modest price range. I'll probably never see the P1 or the 918 in real life ever but if I study hard, say my prayers, and eat my vitamins I might be able to afford a Hybrid Twin Turbo GTR one day.

Penn Tarleton and not only does the electric engine assist acceleration, the electric motors provide the right amount of torque to each wheel so that grip is sustained on any surface out of any corner or bend by altering the torque applied to the wheels in Real-Time.
It's really clever technology, and of course four-wheel steering as well.

Whoever compares a tuned kit-car made by a small company in very small quantities with famous supercar manufacturers with decades of experience and the racing success to back up their rich heritage doesn't really understand the market.
A stretched out Lotus Elise stripped out of everything having a manual gearbox isn't going to be considered by the potential customers of a P1, LaFerrari or 918 Spyder.
You might as well include the Alpha 1 Nissan GT-R in that list of yours.

for me both the v10 and v12 sound even better than a v8 although I can imagine for open top cruiser the lazy soothing sound of v8 might be best....you can pretty accurately tell the number of cylinders by the sound and since v10s are so rare you can even tell if it's a gallardo, rs6 or carrera gt that flew by through your town which is kinda cool and sort of more exclusive than any v8 or v12 of which there are just too many to tell accurately enough ;o]

Really a car company should only focus on 3-4 different models. A sports car. A sedan. An SUV and perhaps a Truck. Instead of having 25 different models and options of "trucks" and raping people on the upgrades. Just build the freaking best truck on the planet and only one single one that comes with every possible option and sell it for the lowest price you possibly can without going out of business. See what happens.

jOE Mee That's correct they haven't because they don't try to do what's best for the customer. They don't care one bit or even consider trying to do what's best for the customer. That's how 99.9% of the companies work out there. That's why I built the 4th largest computer retailer in the western USA in only a matter of years and am now retired. It isn't rocket science. Forget money and focus on helping the customer get the most for their money. You will win hands down. Everyone else is focusing only on how much money they can make off each unit they build instead of how little. It is backwards thinking.

    • @DellSchanze
      @DellSchanze 10 років тому

neoperseus Already have and it works awesome. Maybe I should take over the auto industry. It literally costs only a few thousand more to build a 550hp mustang compared to a Festiva. They are doin' it wrong. If they just made one car in each class and made it the best they would clean up. Nobody would buy from any other car company and they would take at least 70% of the market within a year.

See what happens? Huh, go out of business.
I think Mercedes, Audi, BMW, Porsche are all doing "rather well" with their broad, multi-model strategies. But hey, what do they know about making cars...

Yea but eventually cost goes down and tech trickles down into the lower lines. You wrote this 4 years ago and just today Porsche beat the nurburing lap record with a 911 GT2 which just goes to show you how much faster the 911 got in just 4 years. It’s now faster around the ring then this car which is amazing.
