Wheel Spacing Problems

- Given an 0-6-0 Thomas the Tank to fix. Its problem was that it kept coming off the rails on the corners. First impression was that the wheel gauge looked wrong, off to Peters Spares for a back to back gauge... interesting what it revealed.

Nice job Paul...I think I’ll save for the wheel gauge tool....seems like a handy bit of kit....I’m still trying to get my troublesome Hornby Terrier to run smooth and quite....I see see your just like me trying to get them little screws in 😱.....regards Fred
Yeah thats cause i cant see Fred, fair bit of money for whats there but it did the job and will come in handy in the future. Some models just dont want to run quiet i have found no matter what you do to them.

It is expensive for sure but solid enough not to change shape when pushing it between the wheels. I thought of constructing something myself but they have the perfect design here. Snug fit is just right. Too small a gap and the trains have no traction or derail. Too large, and they have issues on corners. It can be used for derailing wagons too. Useful tool. Yeah pinch your bulb back lol. Cheers, Laurie.
Lol told her last night its going back in the model room. Bloody good tool really and just goes to show that my assumptions were almost right, i thought at least one was right, seems i was wrong.
Hi Paul, you've done an excellent job there mate, I wonder why those wheels were so far out in the first place? Could it have been taken apart before by someone else and hadn't realised they had closed the wheels up? Anyway, you solved that problem by the looks of it and another job can be ticked off. I took your advice by the way about Asda, we haven't got one locally so I ordered mine on-line and I'm chugging away on mine as I type - excellent and really enjoying it !! ;-) ............Graham
Hello mate, glad to hear your getting away with the asda e cig, well done mate. I think the grandkids may be responsible or its been badly dropped as it was shocking how far out they were.
but when you are fixing wheel spacing problems how do you know which wheel has to be moved out?
Hi Sparky, first time i have done this and used the tool mate. I simply placed the tool, or attempted to, between each wheel set. If it didn't fit between the wheels I jammed it in and pushed the wheel around the tool until it rotated evenly with a little resistance. Best thing to do is check each wheel on the loco, truck, carriage, whatever it is. At nearly £9 it aint cheap for what it is but this video shows that it does the job and shows what you cant tell by eye.
