That’s what I’m saying, a lot of people don’t like heavy music “because it’s just noise”, but if you actually take a second and break it down it’s so much more than “just noise”. It’s a beautiful masterpiece of four different instruments and an incredibly talented vocalist all just meshing together in this kind of musical brawl. It’s like you said. Even if you don’t like heavy music, you have to appreciate the production value and the skill and time it takes to make these songs.

It's a great song, my hang-up these days are the structures and riffs are pretty predictable and the guitar tones are all the same. Great songwriting by a great band, but I've been exploring some other things off the beaten path.

Joey Jordison has said that even though he was playing metal drumming on his own, the only real drumming lessons he ever had was with a Jazz/Funk instructor. I think that's why Joey has to be one of the grooviest metal drummers of all time.

Dirk Verbeuren, currently in Megadeth, was in a great band called Soilwork, also started drumming with Jazz lessons. He's funky, but he's so full of subtlety in his playing, and many of his drum lines for songs are NOT static throughout, they progress and build from verse to verse, chorus to chorus, etc.

In the drummer really killed Jesus Christ with the makeup and the nonsense he decided to wear. How could you even think about celebrating a band like that. If they were ridiculing any other religion. Joey was a great drummer. A lot of "cooler than you" drummer forum types (who, i am 99% sure could not play 10% of the stuff he did) would slate him for being clichéd, without realising that he was pretty much the guy who popularised that style of drumming. Also, as Rick points out, his playing more depth than people give him credit for. RIP Joey, such a shame you didn't get to make more music.

was basically what got me into slipknot. the guitar was and still is my instrument, but that drum line in wait and bleed was even more pissed and well writen than the already masterful layering of the guitars. Slipknot almost never causes a good 1st impression, because of how heavy, chaotic, sinister and weird their songs are, and, obviously, their visuals LMAO.. The mix of It all makes almost every single new listener think that they kinda workship the Devil or any other evil/bad thing.. when i first heard and saw them i felt that something bad was going to happen to me or to someone i love If i kept listening to that.. i immediatelly closed the vídeo i was watching.. It took me like, 20 seconds at max to close It.
But maaan, If you surpass that initial impression, and PAY CLOSE ATTENTION, you'll probably notice that you just discovered a phenomenom of a band.
It's not that commom people liking them on their first time listening to It.. a Lot of people, like myself, had to literally LEARN how to enjoy Slipknot... the velocity, weirdness and heavyness of their songs create a sonic chaos that a LOT of brains (even rockers) need to learn how to situate themselves when listening to It.
Wanna know what made me forget about the bizarre 1st impression i had of them?
Just start listening to Psychosocial (álbum/Videoclip version), and keep going until the 1st chorus hits.. i couldn't believe what i was listening.. the song was so fckng heavy and dark, and punchy, with literally the voice of the devil himself singing like If he was mad at me, then all of a sudden an AMAZING voice cut's though singing an ABSURDLY catchy Melody, mixing perfectly with everything Else, while the intensity never went down...
I mean.. want to know How good Slipknot is? Look at ANY Rick's previous vids, from any time, and find a single vídeo showing Rick rocking/headbanging and going like "Woooohhooo" 20ish times like he did on this one. LMAO.
Another thing.. they got famous playing heavy and weird stuff by choice, because they are not good only in that type of music.. If they wanted, they could EASILY get as famous as they got by creating songs that are more 'radio / comercial friendly songs.. and that How good and dynamic they are.
      Slipknot - Vermillion part 2
      Slipknot - Snuff
These 2 songs are SLOW, kinda acoustic style.. it's even hard to believe that you're listening to Slipknot when listening to these 2.. because it's so slow, and beautiful.

OK Rick, you have opened my mind to bands I would never have listened to unless you had done a "What Makes This Song Great?" about one of their songs. The record companies should PAY YOU instead of blocking you; you generate more sales for them than radio play ever will.
Before watching this, the only thing I knew about SLIPKNOT was that they were a loud metal band that wore masks and jumpsuits while performing. Your analysis opened my eyes to the sophistication of their arrangements and their high production values. On the downside, with nine musicians all pounding away at once, it is difficult for those with less discerning listening skills to pick out all those nuances. (Especially on a car radio!) Yes, those drum fills are fantastic, but you have to listen like Elmer Fudd ("Listen vewy, vewy cafuwy!") to pick them out of that wall of sound. I didn't even KNOW a piano was being played until you pointed it out.
    Keep at it Rick!

It was insanely well produced and truly an experience. Funny aside, I went with two friends (they had a spare ticket) and I was the only one who brought earplugs (I always do to live performances, I treasure my hearing), and we were all riding in my buddy’s truck on the way back with me riding in the middle. They kept screaming back and forth because their hearing was all blown out, ended up keeping the earplugs in for the whole ride home. Still, what an amazing experience live!

Yeah sure Jim might say they didn't record with a click and that may very well be true but that doesn't mean that the actual session in the DAW wasn't 'gridded'. Remember that producers do a lot of things behind the scenes without telling the band or just straight up lie to them to get the best possible performances, tones and sounds (the story about Butch Vig making Kurt Cobain do loads of takes claiming that it didn't record properly etc. to trick him into double-tracking his vocals comes to mind here).

I was a metalhead turned into jazz fusion fan, and yeah, with Joey's drums isolated, I can't unhear the distinct jazz fusion fills. His drumming was really tight, and now I appreciate it even more.

    RIP Joey and Paul.
Slipknot has been one of my favorite bands since 2000 watching them evolve through every album has been amazing. One of my favorite parts is that none of their songs seem out of place through time. In the sense that you go back and listen to other songs or hits from the past and you're like, "I feel like this sounded better" or something of the like. But I regularly go back and listen to older Slipknot albums and they are still amazing.

I've never been a particularly great fan of Slipknot (never disliked it, just not my main preference), but "Before I forget" always had a soft spot here... And now been able to listen to each track isolatedly, I have even more appreciation to this song... Every part so well played, so tight, so put together, and yet organic, emotional, human made... Excellent episode, Rick...
    RIP, Joey...

Other channels that do this like produce like a pro or think like an engineer are boring, and yeah they are either a guitarrist or a producer. Not both. Almost never do they bring the piano out or analyze the theory in simple terms. Yeah, this guys knows hows to do most jobs himself so that gives him an advantage to keep the video tight, and fun with the highlights, not to mention hes a lightspeed master ear training god, who is able to on the spot bring out the beauty and copy it with lightspeed. Not many can do all that in a jam packed short fun video.
