Giselle is the quintessential Romantic ballet. It transformed the dance world when it was first performed in Paris in 1841 and remains at the centre of the classical repertory. Although the choreography and designs have undergone many changes over the years, the essence of Giselle remains the same. The Royal Ballet’s production uses Marius Petipa’s classic version (after the original choreography by Jules Perrot and Jean Coralli), first staged in St Petersburg in 1884.
The role of Giselle provides a dancer with many technical and dramatic challenges, from the character’s early love to her poignant descent into madness and final gesture of forgiveness from beyond the grave. The first act of the ballet is filled with historical detail and rustic colour. By contrast, the second act (known as the White Act) plunges the audience into an eerie moonlit forest haunted by the ethereal Wilis - vengeful spirits of young brides who died before their wedding day. With its combination of memorable story and exquisite choreography, Giselle is the perfect way to discover classical ballet. - Розваги

Everyone is saying she looks sickly, but isn't the character well, *dead?* So the way her makeup is done really sells, it puts you in the mind set that she *IS* a ghost dancing among the world of the living, she is really beautiful and well fit for a ballerina. With all the hard work and exercise she must do of course she's gonna be a little thin(maybe more than a little but still that's a lot of demanding exercise) but I'm sure she's healthy otherwise she wouldn't be able to do so much physical activity without passing out. ☺️ I love this dance so much and she did it so beautifully
I don't think she's thin, she's very lean and muscular. Most ballerinas who are healthy are muscular and not stick thin. The leanness gives the illusion of being very thin
The ballet world is rife with bulimic and drug addicted ballerinas and male soloists. It's an unbelievably demanding profession. Balanchine pioneered the skeletal look for ballerinas. Check Margot Fonteyn's legs against any current day ballerina's legs. Most of these dancers, it is widely accepted, are perfectionists who drive themselves to extremes to achieve the beauty we see on stage. It's all very beautiful and sad at the same time
Wow, that's a big 'ol statement! I just watched a video of Fonteyn, and believe me, her legs were not fat, nor are Natalia's thin. The less excess weight a dancer carries, the less strain is put on their joints and the less risk there is of injury. Plus, the amount of training modern dancers go through would make anyone thin.
Exactly. She is supposed to be dead. The performance is beautiful. I attended this Ballet/Opera at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. a few years ago, and I tell you there was not a dry eye in the whole theatre at its completion.

To those saying she looks unhealthy, I think the white powder they put all over her face and body makes her look skinnier and sickly. Her body is actually perfectly fine for a ballerina. I also love her expression and emotion she shows throughout this entire act and I think she did an amazing job as Giselle.

Sadly, she isn't even considered that skinny when you compare her to miss Zakharova and many other Russian ballerinas. But I definitely believe she has the most beautiful body, exquisite for ballet!

I think the thing that catches my attention the most is her hands. It is very difficult to have delicate hands in ballet and its one of the hardest things I try to teach my students. This is a prime example. Her hands are gorgeous and they are constantly moving. They almost look like smoke. Beautiful.
I completely agree. Even Carlos' hands are so gentle and fragile against her. The way he softly places her on the ground gives the illusion that she's floating, ghostly but angelic.

Everyone is talking about her hands, but am I the only one who noticed that her left hand and arm are twitching? Something is wrong with Osipova......a nerve problem of some kind. :(

As always, when I watch Osipova, I'm spellbound,almost bewitched, at not only her remarkable, technically perfect balletic ability, but the way she can convey her faultless acting skills, to each role. The "pain" of becoming a spirit, and to save Albrecht's life, she is able to express, in every tiny movement she makes, through her very careful thought process, to every inch of her divine body. To me, she is deeply intelligent, soulful, craftswoman, who brings a new era for us, and ballerinas. She has "IT". You are very lucky to have her, Royal Ballet! BRAVO. And please don't "forget" all the other, beautiful British ballerinas that you have in your company, too.

It's amazing how she moves like something that isn't human. She's so fluid and graceful with everything she does. Hands down the best Giselle of all time.
both brilliant dancers. Natalia is the reason why I am starting Ballet at 20. I love her in Coppelia but here she is a true artist, not just showing off tricks but opening up and being vulnerable. Carlos of course is a great dancer in his own right but here he is being a great partner which allows Natalia to shine. I have seen bad partnering and it's not pretty. They are so comfortable with each other so they can express themselves fully. This is why I love this pairing in this pdd so much

The moment she brings up her arms just before doing the first developpe takes my breath away, it looks like she is a ghost and she begins to fly, from there and on she's just perfect, the most absolute perfection I have seen, I can't even explain the feeling she brings to my heart.

I love Natalia Osipova because her acting is as good as her technique. As someone said below, it requires intelligence to be able to do both. Definitely one of the best Giselles I have ever seen! This whole act can't leave anyone coldhearted. This beautiful and sad ballet requires a real master to dance the leading role!

Natalia Osipova just takes your breath away as Giselle. She is so expressive. Carlos Acosta is such an attentive partner. It is magic to see them in this pas de deux.
I sincerely believe that miss Osipova is one of the best things that has happened to ballet in the last years, and I think that if she keeps with the good work, she could be marked in ballet history! I just have never seen something like this perfomace of Giselle, this is the video that made me fall deeply in love with her, and I think I have watched it more than 100 times #lol. She is just so expressive, she really put her soul in the process of acting in this record, and she looks so dead that even her shoes are dead!! She also has an amazing technique, she makes complex things looks easy and I've seen videos where she does moves that I didn't even know that were possible to be done (I did ballet for more than 10 years), for real, I have said "WTF" at her videos more than once!! Royal Ballet did great to Natalia, I could see that she has been reinventing herself, and I'm looking foward to see her future performaces!! :)
I was lucky to see it live in Mihalovsky theater last winter. I believed in every breath of her!

Ballet isn't meant to be seen this up close. But they are still flawless even in HD. I don't dare to say that they are the best to have danced this pdd but their chemistry is so real. It doesn't feel like dancing. They are simply emoting. Time stops and there is only them in the whole world

She is AMAZING. She looks like she is actually dead. Osipova is IMO the BEST ballerina nowadays. Not only she has an incredible, flawless technique, but also she is such a good actress and can play any character to perfection.

I must say, I watch this😅 interpretation of Giselle with Osipova and Acosta every night and I will never get tired of watrching this version. Love, love, love the choreography and the subtleness of Osipova and the strength and presence of Acosta…. BRAVO!!!!

Natalia Osipova is a very rare example of those who started as gymnasts (like Sylvie Guillem), but managed to develop artistic skills when most of ballerinas nowadays are busy with their technique and do not have time to act. Carlos Acosta is a brilliant dancer, but he is better in other ballets. Osipova is probably one of the best interpreters of Giselle among still dancing ballerinas.
look at her pointe shoes, falling apart. they're probably really dead.. which means it hurts a lot more.. and everything was so slow, must of been so painful.. beautiful though.
Chloe Lewis she always dances with her shoes like that and without ribbons! I don’t know why.
I've noticed that too--her shoes are always wrinkly around the box. I love her strong expressive feet!
She must have a really strong feet to be able to dance in that shoes and actually prefer it.
She always looks like her shoes are too narrow. She must like dead shoes. I wish someone would do an article on her shoe preferences, and how she prepares them. Her feet have to look knarly.

This is beautiful! I saw her dance Juliet with the Kirov a few years ago and she was incredible. On a slight digression, part of why she looks so pale and ghostly is the body makeup - I think it's called wet white? - that dancers wear for Act 2 of Giselle and for when they're swans in Swan Lake. Also, yes, her shoes look really dead, but Darcey Bussell mentioned in her autobiography that she prefers softer shoes for Giselle since it didn't require the same support as dancing Swan Lake, for example, would, so I assume that Natalia holds a similar opinion and that's why she's performing in such well broken in shoes.
Interesting. I had never heard, thought or realized this matter of the pointe shoes. They fit as they fit the character, like the costume...humm... interesting point indeed. what is the title of that autobiography by Darcey you mentioned by the way?

You are so right in saying that she has broken into her shoes more than perfectly, and that she looked like a kind of ghost on stage. Either that or they meant for her to look like that.
+Joana Amoroso The most celebrated ballerina of the 70s and early 80s, Natalia Makarova, was typical of ballerinas. She set aside two pairs of softer, quieter shoes for the white acts of Swan Lake, and a pair of harder shoes for the technically demanding choreography of Odile in the Act Three ballroom scene.
+Aves Raggiana And yet Osipova's shoes for that kind of role are so soft that they do look almost dead sometimes. She can still use them though because she has very strong feet that allow her to do almost anything. Very few ballerinas would attempt, say, Ashton's Rhapsody with Osipova's shoes because, while that ballet incorporates lots of demi-pointe steps for the ballerina, she also has to "rattle off" (as one writer put it ) on pointe a lot.
Osipova's most renowned for her elevation, but you only have to see her rehearse Ashton's Romeo and Juliet to see how sharp and fast her pointework can get. As I wrote to Jenny, she makes me wish I could see her in some of Balanchine's most hardcore choreography for the ballerina that only some American dancers are willing to attack at full throttle.

I got this on DVD last year from the RoH shop. Natalia Osipova's performance in all of this production is far and away the most moving and captivating I've seen by any dancer for a very long time, if ever, in my opinion. One would have to made of stone, I think, not to be moved by it.

I think this is where humanity ACTUALLY peaked. Most of those movements are so unnatural for the human body, yet it looks so effortless and beautiful, she actually makes it seem like she’s floating. Ballet has bewitched me when I was a small girl, and it still is bewitching me now. This was just beautiful.

like like like. i looove this pas de deux. There were times in this performance, particularly in this act in which, besides natalia's amazing feats of strength, there wasn't a very good balance between the effort put into it and the appearance of ease. But in this pas de deux, i have to say, everything was perfect. FRom Carlos Acosta's expression and his handling of Natalia, making her seem weightless as a feather, to Natalia's just perfect expression and technique and ease and feeling. This Giselle is very expressive, but i like it. It's not overdone at all, it's simply beautiful and sad and moving. And the movements of her arms and, again, her expression and position of her head is just priceless.The perfect pauses she makes between movements, never really stopping, The two of them are one and one with the music and one with the characters. This was just extraordinary and everytime something extraordinary like this happens, even if it's not a big deal, something else is added to ballet.
Watching this without the music takes away so much of the beauty. It really shows the brilliance of the composer

I honestly almost cried from how unbelievably beautiful this was. Her arms, I don’t know where to begin.... not to mention her dancing. This was beyond breathtaking and I’m sorry I haven’t seen it sooner. So very moved.

She is exquisite in every way, as dancer and actress. Her hands are particularly expressive, down to her fingers. Her feet! The fact that she can dance like this in shoes that are almost dead is beyond me.

I have seen a good many "Giselle's" in my lifetime. Up to seeing this (Full DVD), Galina Metszenseva, was top of my list.Now I have to conceed that Osipova tops them all.

This is so mesmerizing and magical. I've seen many great ballerinas dancing Giselle, but Osipova is something else. Pure artistry and an incredible musicality... just one of a kind.

Наталья просто божественна! Складывается впечатление, что она невесомая! Девочка- эльф! Безумно хороша! Я всегда думала, что " Жизель" - это только Максимова, " Дон-Кихот" - Максимова, Плисецкая, Семёнова. " Спартак" - только Максимова, " Кармен" - только Плисецкая! А тут вот раз! И затмила всех! Понимаю, что у каждой балерины своя школа, но Наташа индивидуальна! Браво!!!!
