Imagining dying out of heartbreak for a guy you just met
Honestly it’s so embarrassing
In another (older) verson she kills herself.
The story can only be so long. The dancers and audiences will lose stamina if it drags on, so you just sort of have to fill in the blanks.
So true! I think for a lot of ballets, narrative isn't really their strong suit haha
Actually in some versions she has a heart disease and too much excitement and dancing was the main reason why her mother was so protective of her.
When you have lived through it, you understand Giselle.
One of my favorite ballets! It’s tragic yet beautiful.
My Aunt Ida took me age 10 to Markova Giselle 65 years ago. I have never been the same. Allow this masterpiece to work its magic as it has transformed my life, the power grows ever stronger, open, receive
Lucky you! My name is Alicia and she was the first person I knew who had the same spelling as me! She has always been one of my favorites ! Lucky you!!
OMG! YOU GOT TO SEE THE FIRST (confirmed) JEWISH PRIMA BALLERINA! I’M SO JEALOUS!!!!
Giselle might have forgiven him BUT I DID NOT 😤😆
FR😭
😄
We’re all Myrthas lol
real lol 😭
Thank you! :-) I have always understood that wilis are there to keep on revenging every night. They are not trying to find a man to join them in death in order to be set free from being a wili; they love to haunt and revenge. And that it is not what Giselle wants. In that version, Giselle is not actually sacrficing herself, but actually redeems herself and breaks free from the curse of haunting ever after. I have heard, that in the earliest versions she was actually shown ascending to heaven in the very end. Anyways, it is a haunting and powerful story and can be told and interpreted in different ways. :-)
Absolutely! I love seeing all the different versions out there. It makes it a unique experience every time 😊
You sure put a twist to it that I've
Never heard
and where's poor Hilarion the peasant who is danced to death?
The poster who gave the different narrative above==that is the narrative I learned in ballet class--the Wilis kill men out of revenge not because they will no longer have to haunt the forest.
The Wilis are evil spirits caught up in their anger and memory of betrayal and they want to keep on punishing men. That is why Myrtha usually holds a stalk of Rosemary--for remembrance--remembrance of their betrayal by men.
Giselle forgives Albrecht, though, so she overcomes her need for revenge.
The dawn wards off the Wilis--they must return to their graves. Giselle must return as well but because she spared Albrecht and helped him survive, she earns her eternal rest.
Ie. True Love is unselfish and transcends Death.
Also, Albrecht and Giselle are not love at first sight--he had been pretending to be a migrant worker and visiting the village off and on courting Giselle. That is why she thinks they are finally engaged.
Itsva memorial ballet the end is sad Albreth cant go back to ser giselle hes lucky to be alive i dont know if her spirit can visit him ib another place
This is my favourite ballet. The music is so beautiful...full of joy and longing.😅
Couldn't agree more :)
same my absolute favorite ballet!
When i hear the Music in the second Act I always have to cry. Giselle is my favorit Ballet. ❤
Beautiful! I love that you used Diana Vishneva footage, I feel like she really captures Giselle’s essence the best! 💙
I couldn't agree more!
Idk why I thought that was Maria kochetkova
A truly beautiful yet tragic piece. I’ve understudied for this and many other roles, though this role and performance are among my top favorites.
A great video, thank you! I saw Giselle last night.
Thank you - this video is perfect timing! My brother & sister in law are going to see Giselle (my favorite ballet) for the first time tomorrow, so I was looking for a good summary for them. This one is beautifully done!
Thank you! I hope they enjoy it. It's such a beautiful experience in person. 🙂
@@BalletExplainedTV They thought it was beautiful! Your video really helped them understand the plot, so thank you!
I went to see Giselle at Hanoi Opera House it was breathtakingly beautiful
Thank you very much for your simple, yet eloquent description of the ballet!
I love watching all the ballets on UA-cam , and your exploration is the cherry 🍒 on top 😊!
,,
the videos are very educational and may i say your voice is very soothing and lovely
Thank you! I'll do my best 😊
This was a beautiful video about such a great romantic ballet. It's nice that you are keeping up the videos, just a pity here that you didn't explained the historical background here (Theophile Gautier, who was actually indeed in love with the first Giselle Carlotta Grisi, had written the libretto, and this is what fascinated me again and again, especially as I had already in childhood an adaption of his work Le Capitane Fracasse, and it freaked me out that this was the same guy who wrote Gisellle...).
I don't know how you feel about the ending, but I still like a more "hopeful" interpretation, as also the music is so pretty in the ending....
Nevertheless, I'm also excited to see more ballets explained here (;
Thank you very much for your comment!
I also find the historical background of "Giselle" fascinating. I'm still experimenting with content and formatting, so I'll keep this feedback in mind with future videos. 🙂
I'll also most likely make a separate video of the history behind "Giselle" for viewers who are interested.
@@BalletExplainedTV Oh, Giselle would definitely deserve it! I was also going to comment on your Swan Lake video, but accidentally deleted my comment....Swan Lake is much more tricky to explain in only five minutes, especially the history. (I'm rearching this historical background for such a long time and I changed again and again my ideas about it. From all the different productions, I would rather to see a more "peaceful" version like in the ending of Giselle(well, perhaps less tragic (;) - I'm neither convinced by battles nor by drowning....)
@@felicity1877 Too true! There are so many fascinating theories when it comes to the origin of some of these ballets.
Also, the amount of different versions and reinterpretations that exist now make it hard for people to agree on just one story.
Nowadays, when I attend a ballet, I try not holding any expectations and just appreciate each production for what it is. 🙂
@@BalletExplainedTV Yeah, definitely! When I was first confronted with the tragic ending of Swan Lake (the movie with Nurejev and Fonteyn), I was completely disturbed as I only knew the happy ending before, and that is why, I started with ballet history , meanwhile I‘m also quite open for all interpretations and the good thing is, that all is possible (Karl Paquette as Rothbart made me even to consider a kind of villian ever after 😂😉)
I can’t wait to watch this live
Очень красивый видеоклип! Спасибо за удовольствие :)
She had heart problems before she met Albrecht.
Thats why her Mom didn't want her to dance
That would make sense, poor mother...
A wonderful ballet.
Never understood why she could save Albrecht but not Hillarion!
Maybe because she didn't love him
Because she got up I believe after they killed hillarion.
@@j.i.r608that and hilarious was snitching 😂😂
I think Hilarion's death is important because there you also see two sides of the same coin, that is, how Myrta and Giselle react to the same thing (a tragic death caused by heartbreak and a man). While Myrta is an avenger who has no mercy, Giselle, despite what Albrecht did to her, still saves him. And yes, I also felt sorry for Hilarion but oh well. That makes the story interesting.
I remember listening to Galina Ulanova about this ballet, she was mentioning that it’s not written in libretto , how much time passed between 1st and 2st act , so Albert might returned to this village after 10,20 or even 30 years .
In addition ,
Forgot to mention , Gisselle wasn’t buried on cemetery , she is buried in the woods which is near this village
Thank you. My daughter is studying ballet at college and hoping to go on to work in the industry. She is about to perform in Giselle with the EYB, and I am clueless. At least I will understand the storyline when I go and see her performance
That's amazing! I hope the best for your daughter :)
So incredibly much sexism in the story
¡Qué bellamente explicado! Gracias
Que bela explicação, pude entender a peça melhor agora! Thanks, kisses from Brazil!💖
With as little disrespect to Giselle as possible, may this kind of love never find me 💀
Just wanted to share information that I know about this beautiful balled.
Gisselle’s mom asked her not to dance. her mom wasn’t really worried that her daughter would die, Gisele was sick girl , she worried that she would die and become Willie. Because the village they lived in , was surrounded by the woods where Willie’s were. Everyone in the village knew what was going on there. In old times , when balled had many gestures , her mom would show with her hands “don’t dance that much , you’ll become Willie. Also, in original libretto , Wilies were coming to those woods all other the world.
In order to become Willie , they had to be two things going on
1. Girls that were Willies loved dancing .
2. They were betrayed by man
Also , the only reason Why Albert survived was because Hans , that loved Gisele , put a cross on her grave.
I just watched this ballet and I had no idea what was going
Wow!❤
I didn’t knew shit about Ballet until this day..
Now im a man of culture, so pardon my vulgar expression prior.
0:49 whoahhh buddy😳😳😳😳
Bruh that's my name rn
I feel so happy to see that my name is made as a ballet play 😭
Can you please do another one of a Ballet narrative perhaps the dream?
I'll try :)
Maravilhosos 🤗
Will there be a Esmeralda explained in the future
Most definitely 😊
Giselle. At Mariinsky theatre.
Diana Vishnyova and Mathieu Ganio.
Thank you. Precious information.
Giselle would not survive today's dating culture
She didn't survive her own culture's dating either. 😭
I think all men from the past would be horrified to see the way feminists have turned women into grotesque little men.
Morate uzeti u obzir vrijeme u kojem je djelo nastalo;to je bilo doba romantizma kad su literatura i glazba bile prepune tragičnih likova.Pa završila sam srednju baletnu školu i vrlo dobro prostudirala odnos on i ona.
Who was Petronella in ballet Giselle
Njurejev i Margot Fonteyn; još sam bila u baletnoj školi, ali oni su ostali top 1
💚💚
Giselle stabbed herself in the version I just watched
Who is the male dancer here?
Mathieu Ganio. The performance of the Mariinsky.
Como é o sobrenome Giselle ano 77
Behind the veil of mystic, music, dance hidden simple story .No deep meaning,no morality.
Giselle is so naive and stupid, can't recognize stranger in her village.
Didn't listen to Hillarions warnings
Bertha is so "protective mother" ,that couldn't help her daughter in a moment of her madness.
Squire helps his master in a case of deceit, didn't get any lesson/ punishment.
Hillarion who tried to warn and revealed a deception was killed.
Albert ( deceiver) got mercy.🤦
( No word about squire)
The themas of Bathilda and Bertha are not disclosed.
Gissel's suicide scene was removed from ballet. What we can learn from this story,?🤷
Giselle didn't commit suicide.
She had a heart condition that killed her.
.
Hillarion tried to warn her out of spite, not love.
And it was his hatred that killed him.
.
Her mother was an average hapless woman. It is quite often that the highly emotional and gifted daughters are born to such women.
.
Giselle was a dancer by nature, a talented beautiful dancer.
That is why she turned into a willis - they were all dancers in their past.
She forgave Albert and assended to heaven.
.
Albert was punished, he lost the only real love he would ever know.
He repented. And his life will never be happy again. He will just exist, not live and love.
.
This is all very philosophical.
But most people are so far away from normal they are far too angry to understand.
@@nnnnnnnnnnn7292 Very interesting,thank you.
Ballet created in 1840s, there are version of Gissele death in her
madness, she took a sword started to spin with, and stabbed herself.Hillarion tried to catch and prevent but too late..
In other version she goes mad and dead from heartbreak.
I couldn't find any confirmation of Hilarions "spite and hate"
I tried, but in every synopsis and libretto that i read, was only about his love to Gissele.
If you have any other information, please share with me.
Romantic ballets were so popular in 19th century.))) Turn "romantic love" into holy idol. This idea still works in art ,also in nowdays. But without any connection with real life :-)
What can we learn from this story? That women haven't the talent to write ballet scores.
🤍
She dudbt even aee Hilarin she didnt jnow ge gad come and he wasnt in her mind she didnt love him.but she would notvwant him to suffer he could have married simeone else
this is so sexist!!
No it's not
Vishneva, sublime and ethereal, the best Giselle since Makarova. ❤❤❤
