Free M009 Australia - An Introduction

- In this video, I'll introduce you to a modular model railway standard inspired by the Welsh narrow gauge railways. It operates on the OO9 scale, equivalent to English OO Scale but designed for narrow gauge lines! This marks the beginning of my journey with this project, and as I continue constructing modules for this model railway, I'll be sharing more videos along the way!
We value your feedback, so please feel free to leave a comment, and if you haven't already, consider subscribing for regular updates. We'll return next month with more captivating news from the world of model railways in Australia.

Nice to meet you today at the Epping Model Railway expo. I couldn't believe the crowd there, it was to me a indicator Model Railways is alive and well. I was worried there a few years back when the model railways shows had lowering numbers of visitors and exhibitors. What blew my mind today was how many Australian themed layouts where on exhibit.
Very nice to hear from you sir, I always used to watch your videos when I was little, thankyou for showing the people the benefits of model railroading, I'm only 13 but I still love the hobby, keep goin brother.
That looks great Will!
It was!
This is great. I saw your set up at Diamond creek and wondered what the story behind it was. I started building a small layout in n scale due to space constraints, but this makes me think. It helps that I have a real soft spot for OO9.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Such a beautiful looking layout! I was sent your way after a recommendation from Western Signalman! I look forward to seeing your future stuff!
We’re keen to see where it all goes as well!
So exciting to hear we got a mention from the other side of the world. Thanks for watching!
The layouts look wonderful. 009 is such an appealing scale and I am sure it will get even more popular. They are so colourful and characterful and more can be fitted into a smaller space, which is great for today's compact living. I have a plan in my head for a small elevated 009 line linking my mainline station to a Hotel on a hill. 😊
Can I compliment you on the running speeds in the video. I feel too much narrow gauge stuff looks great but destroys the illusion with dragster takeoffs & overly fast running.
Best wishes with the project.
Thank you!
Will, really interesting concept, and something that needs further promoting, and investigating.
Thank you for sharing this, and I look forward to your updates on your progress. Yes, there are lots of ways of wiring, building, etc. don't take any notice of the detractors - what works for you is the best anyway, and that applies to all of us.
Cheers, and stay safe, Michael
Glad you enjoyed it! Thank you as always Michael!
Looks awesome Will. Congratulations on 10K Subs! Well done.
Thank you very much!
Brilliant video Will James
Thank you!
I've joined the group, but yet to get around to building a module, but it'll come soon! This is a concept we all need to get into, particularly younger modellers. You could literally build a module for the same cost as a year's membership to a club, and bring it along to meet up for a good time without dealing with club politics and nonsense!
Looking forward to getting involved in this one, like you I have limited space so I'm thrilled about the idea of a modular system that can work in a smaller space. Got my first set of end plates from you last week so setting up a small space to start building now! Going to start with the modules and eventually see about getting my own rolling stock up and running once I've got a bit more confident with making the modules. Stuff like this is a great initiative anyone can get started with as a gateway to the larger aspects of the hobby, so thanks to you and the founding crew for taking the initiative on this one. Already up to 103 members on the Facebook group so it's on a roll. I remember it was only on around 50 when I joined on the Saturday of the Diamond Creek Expo.
Ignore the detractors, allowing them to rule your content gains you nothing and takes away from your enjoyment and those of us who just enjoy seeing what other folks are doing in the hobby.
Love this idea. Can't wait to see the idea grow in Australia. Definitely peeked my interest.
Hope you enjoy it!
Happpy 10k!!
Thank you!!
Awesome module layout, 009 has boomed during the last few years and seen some lovely 009 Gauge layouts and the layout you shown us does capture the Welsh Narrow Gauge
Many thanks!
I’m “working” on a narrow guage railway too! (And I just got back from wales too)
Great to hear!
Excellent work Will! I honestly wish I had discovered 009 years ago! Well done mate!
Many thanks!
Good gauge choice Will. I look forward to seeing your groups work in Adelaide at some point
You and me both!
Great video as always Will, and way to remember your trip. After going to USA I’ve now got a bit of American HO and On30 to remind of my time there. What a great way to get new people involved in the hobby, by inviting them to build a module. Minimal financial commitment but maximum enjoyment, hopefully more clubs take up the idea. Keep up the great work, look forward to your next vid.
After going to Australia in 1989 and riding the Indian Pacific and Ghan from Perth to Alice, I eventually acquired a pair of TrainOrama GM's and Auscision Ghan set to remind me of my time there! Model trains are a great way to keep the memories alive. (Ken in Maine, USA.)
I saw the setup you and your friends had at Diamond Creek, it was very nice. OO9 is sort of my second scale so god forbid I ever finish something I'm happy with for my first (Japanese N) I'll definitely have a go at throwing something together in this.
Also, nice Manning Wardle. I have a soft spot for the L&B because their other loco is basically a miniature Puffing Billy.
The FreeM009 system and method you guys have adopted could easily translate into similar for TT gauge too!
Thanks! I do wonder if TT will ever get of the ground, especially here with so many other gauges/scales readily available and usually at a better price point!
Nice video Will. This is a great layout concept and looks like it will work well. This is something I would like to get involved in as it looks like good fun. - Nicholas.
Thanks!
I showed my friend your Skarloey channel (yeah, I saw him!)
Are you the Thomas channel?!
THANK YOU DETAIL NARROW GAUGE RAILWAY IN VIDEO
You are welcome
Nice job chaps 😎 Now how do we join up yours and ours?
Thank you Paul! I’m sure there’s a way!
How about creating a PDF file for the M009 standards
Hey it’s on my website and there is a pdf on the Facebook group, or you can email me and I can send a copy!
