Newport Workshops Open Days 2024 - Melbourne, Australia

- Over the March long weekend in Melbourne, Victoria the biennial Newport railway workshops open day was on again and this what happened at this years unmissable event!
In 2024 the historic 135-year-old Newport Railway Workshops was a hive of activity with everything railways both big and small. This year will got to see over 50 steam and diesel locomotives over two sites being Newport Workshops and the Newport Railway museum, with rollingstock and displays from Steamrail, 707 Operations, Victorian Goldfields Railway, Mornington, Walhalla, Yarra Valley, Daylesford and Puffing Billy with working demonstrations running throughout the weekend.

Heat aside, it was a fantastic day when I was there on Saturday. The aircon carriages scattered around were just great for taking a breather for a few minutes before heading back out into the heat to see more. I've recently reached out to 707 Operations to find out about volunteering, hopefully I can contribute in some way! Thanks for capturing some highlights of the weekend, looking forward to 2026!
You're not wrong, it was extremely hot. Didn't notice that more than on the walk from the workshops down Champion Rd to the museum, I was parched by the time I got there. Definitely had to pay that pub up the road a visit afterwards. Wasn't going to miss it though, and I couldn't do it on the Sunday as I'm also a big fan of the UFC and that just so happened to be on this weekend as well. Was definitely a great day, heat aside. The Hitachi being on display was the highlight of it for me. The V/Line locos (wish we could have seen A62 in it's new livery) were great as well, and it was good seeing B72 finally running. I tell you what though, you don't realise just how loud those steam train whistles are until you're up close to one. And there was always someone doing a really long whistle. Oh and yes that air-conditioned N set was great. Great to see you volunteering too, I wouldn't know where to begin.
My dad used to volunteer down there helping restore one of the old Tate swing-doors, and would take me and my brother along. Quite a few memories there. He did part of his apprenticeship there too back in the 60's.

I live about a mile from where the Santa Fe workshops were. All gone, of course.
I grew up on market street, right across from the newport train yard. Spent many a childhood saturday morning watching the stream trains go out for the day

It really was a fantastic experience to go to. It was great seeing B72 in the teacup livery and all the photoshoots, it's the Rosehill of heritage locomotives!

Love the Hitachis used to remember sparrows would nest in the seats between the seat back and base...also vline loco on its own running thru the upfield line past Coburg... back in the early 90s could the driver be lost who knows lol

It's a shame we can't replicate the same event in South Australia at Islington workshops. Envious of Victorians for once! 😂 Neighbourly jokes aside it looked like an enjoyable day and would love to attend next time.

Nice video Will. This was my first time at the open days and it was thoroughly enjoyable. I especially like the commentating during the day. I think when I go to the next one I'll go over 2 days as I did miss out on a lot since I only went on the Monday.
Fun fact: M231 is believed to have never left the Newport Workshops in its whole life!

@@WillJamesRailways yep, but in contrast it’s twin M232 made to one of the furthest reaches of the network - the line “from nowhere to nowhere” ie Nowingi towards Milewa South, near Mildura.

Oh to go back to the Simpler Days and the Locomotives of the past, My Dad drove for QR mostly on 2400 or 2100 Class in Central Qld to the Port of Gladstone or the Power Station.
The Model Railways are great and as usual Everything Is Covered by Yourself So Well, I'm thinking of a QR set up along the lines of where my Dad used to drive and I spent a lot of time in the Cab but funny with my love of Rail and Everything Trains, Big & Small I wound up in the Left Hand Seat on Air Force & Airliner Aircraft, Go Figure !!, I still have that Romance for Rail in my Blood but yeah got to do something about that layout to honour my Dad.

I congratulate Australia for the railway preservation they have done. I’m a brit and we have events like this but not on this level we may have more steam locos but Australia is able use the steam locos they have to the fullest. I would love to go to one of these events but I live on the other side of the world.

Rare to see one of the two M class shunters on film and moving as at 4:55 .
Without the shunters boards i was surprised to realise for the first time that they were an outside frame locomotive like the F class were.
The M class were the last locomotives built at Newport Workshops and spent just about all their working lives in the Newport Workshops yards as i understand, unless anyone can point me to their use elsewhere.

Wow, this is the best and most stunning coverage of this weekend I've seen so far! Maybe it's the 4K footage, maybe it's the decent professional editing that presents this better than everyone else's videos from that weekend! Whatever it was, a great weekend had by all, and greatly enjoyed sharing the commentary tent and microphones with you and the other lads!
With the popularity of this event, why is this only every second year?
It costs a lot to put it on, and a lot of organising from volunteers!
"A touch warm" is an understatement. But it was well worth it. Awesome event and kudos to the volunteers especially those working near the boilers the whole day!
