The simplicity of the 08 matoran made them really good introduction sets for young kids. I was 8 years old when I got the orange one, and I think that it being super simple helped me get into the larger sets later
The Av-Matoran were the ones alongside the 2010 wave that felt the furthest away from a building system and more action figures with an installation process. Their pieces are as restrictive as possible and all new molds aside from masks seem to be designed to be used solely for the purpose of the set, which is the anthesis of what Bionicle was founded on as a toy. It sucks most too because this philosophy for smaller size sets carried all the way into early Hero Factory where entire limbs were just a single chunk of plastic.
The Av Matoran are too simple, but the sheer vibes of these little buggers make me love them, they're some of my favorite small sets in the entirety of Bionicle The gnarly masks of the shadow ones are some of my favorite masks theve ever made
I feel like the Av-matoran are great for extra parts, there isn't much to the sets themselves, but even though they don't have a lot of pieces: the pieces that you do get are very useful and very cool in MOCs. Although, looking back at when I was little, the Av-matoran were actually the sets that I played the most with, simply because they were small, compact, and you never had to worry about parts falling off. The bigger the sets, the least likely a kid is to play roughly with them. I used to climb trees with Photok and make him fly down, and surprisingly none of the pieces broke or fell off. These types of sets don't look the greatest, and they don't have a play-function, but they're much more appealing to play with for younger kids. (I was 6 when these came out btw)
This is the last matoran line where the concept overshadowed the toyline. Light and Shadow matoran were great as a concept. I remember rebuilding the matoran with Toa/Makuta parts to make a halfway. I called them Crimson Shadow, Ashen Shadow, Ebon Shadow etc. By the by, Radiak (the red one) is a quadruped. I preferred the Shadow Matoran, a real return to the Rahkshi vibe. If you need sets from this year, let me know. I think I can find this year in my closet.
I know they seem simple but as a kid, they were a LOT easier to convince my mom to get me than two whole phantoka/makuta sets, and they were a blast to play with.> Those new mask molds made for some epic mocs, as the mask is the defining thing for me that forms my Mocs personalities and a lot of those masks felt like blank slates in a way
They are my personal favourite matoran line. Simple builds, yes, but the articulation is enough as in shoulder/thigh and hand/foot, just like every other matoran set. And to me they look very memorable.
Great to see you back! I actually got back into bionicle/ into your videos after Gadunka was posted, and they've been a great source of information and even nostalgia in a way. Really interested to see the rest of 2008 and onwards
Dude I nearly jumped out of my seat when I saw this notification! Awesome you're back dude and doing well! Thought you may have been done for good for a bit...
I preffer the Av Matoran over the Metru Matoran, I mean yeah they had disk launchers but the elbows and knees were unstable, these are bigger and have more resistance, also the utility to attach them to the Toa and Makuta are awesome
Bittersweet feelings for me in this lineup. Tanma was the last ever Bionicle toy I ever got, but that was primarily due to getting VERY few in my time, being a huge fan of the property from the start but only ever getting 3-4 sets over it's lifetime (I'm a transformers fan so my parents' extremely limited toy budget was almost always claimed by those instead).
@@AllOutBrick i forgot to mention! Radiak, the red Matoran is supposed to be a four legged crawler, (think General Grievous on all fours) that's why his legs are weird
I don't get the complaints about the limbs not having articulating elbows and knees. That's basically the exact same as all the Matoran and Toa sets up to the Toa Metru (and all the Matoran sets even after that), these limbs always felt like call-backs to those classic limb designs of the Toa Mata and Nuva to me (especially with how they'll be used in Bionicle Stars).
The rest of the review is fine, there are definitely a lot fewer pieces in the body build and they've long since done away with gear functions by this point. I just feel like ragging on the lack of elbows and knees specifically isn't quite fair.
I think Gavla was my first Bionicle and I got quite a bit of fun out of that set. You have the shadow Matoran torsos backwards, they're supposed to have this hunched over evil look to them (apart from Radiak, who as other people have pointed out should be in the even eviler all fours pose)
Glad to see you're back. I've had a rough few months as well so I can relate. A bit disappointed that you didn't mention the fragile redesigned sockets, but I assume that'll come up later on.
not sure if anyone is gonna see this but ill share for the sake of my own excitement i remember having tanma and lewa as a kid and my brother had vamprah and gavla. i also remember having solek as a kid. in 2022 my brother got me the kopaka and solek sets with the cannisters as part of my christmas present which was amazing. since then i've gotten a photok sealed in package for about $40 canadian and i have used versions of vamprah and gavla on the way from bricklink :))
The masks are cool, and I had the orange one and liked him. But tbch, my favorite version of Matoran were literally everything from Mata Nui downwards.
I had all of these except for Tanma and Kirop (Black). But more curiously, I never had any earth elemental characters/sets from 2008. Solek (White) was the first one I obtained while Photok (Orange) was the last one I obtained. Every piece on these sets was new, except for the weapons, and the new limbs comprising Tanma's arms are exclusive in Metru blue (earth blue) to Gavla, and appear the most often in dark stone and black throughout the theme. The new limbs comprising Tanma's legs and Photok and Kirop's arms are exclusive to Tanma and Kirop in lime green and black respectively. Kirop is also one of only two sets to have that limb in dark stone. A similar story is true for the new feet on him in dark stone. Solek's limbs comprising his arms and legs in white also appear in one other set later in 2008. Photok marks the first and only Bionicle set to have the Toa Mata feet (Voodoo Feet) in orange, though they also came in a set from the "Hero Factory" theme (7162) after Bionicle's initial discontinuation in 2010. Photok also marks the final appearance of the "Chronicler Staffs" (repurposed as "Power Blades") in the theme. On each of them, the heads in transparent fluorescent green appear throughout the rest of theme, though the heads on the Shadow Matoran in transparent reddish-orange are never seen again after 2008...
The red one isn't meant to be bipedal; he's mutated and more primative than other Shadow Matoran becausr his Makuta wasthe first to turn an Av-Matoran evil, and basically wanted a pet or slave; not a free thinking person. As such? He walks around on all fours, hence the extra articulation with him and his ankles.
You notice it, but perhaps you're afraid to say it. Lego was definitely cutting costs at this stage in Bionicle and it's starting to detract from the art that Bionicle started by making them feel cheap. Not that all of the sets from this era were bad, but you can definitely start to see the beginning of the end for Bionicle, long before the bad era and sets take form.
Good to see you back, and yeah, these guys were always kinda lackluster. As for Radiak, he’s supposed to stand like a spider on all fours
It's so great to be here!
The simplicity of the 08 matoran made them really good introduction sets for young kids. I was 8 years old when I got the orange one, and I think that it being super simple helped me get into the larger sets later
Good point!
Never forget the Solek that was chainsawed into oblivion.
Also Radiak is supposed to walk on all four limbs at once.

MNM is BACK!!! Going to make sure the series is capped off well!
Oh btw, the bodies of Kirop and Gavla are supposed to have the hollow side on front, makes them more evil looking
That makes them look hunched, like they're little Igors working for their masters
