Big bird yellow for a baby with jaundice made me laugh so loud. Love the humility and the sense of humor with your story time. Good luck on your journey to your medical degree! You are going to do so well.
Found your videos recently and enjoy your stories! Not a medical student but I think these reflections would be super useful for other medical students as a reminder that no one is perfect, it takes time to get used to the rhythm of things and continual hands-on practice over time.
Hey thanks for this video. I love how you talk about your mistakes openly, it makes you look human. Because you know, you look perfect to us in your videos, but this was like a refreshing breeze. Everyone makes mistakes on their journey and that just means that we are learning! Mistakes have to be made :)
Yes! his motivation to become a doc (talking about his own doc who made him feel comfortable as a child and wanting to do the same for others) says a lot about him.
I'm an anesthetist student and had a though day in the OR today. This video made me feel better knowing other students make mistakes and have "off" days too. Your story-telling skills are awesome btw!
Thank you for making this video. I’m a third year education student teaching my first classes and the feeling of doing something new is inspiring, but scary when mistakes happen! It feels good to know that this happens for everyone!
I really enjoy your videos! I just retired from 49 yrs working in the med field. I was the prac admin for a busy OB/GYN clinic. We had med students and ARNP students through our clinic all the time. Your stories are so spot on for how most of you feel and what you experience. One of the med students got to experience a delivery w/ a baby having a very rare disorder. The dr w/ 30 yrs experience had never seen or delivered a baby with this disorder before so it was said this was more than likely a once in a life time experience for both of them. The student wants to be a pediatrician...very incredible experience. Best of luck to you as you continue your journey!
“SOAP, soap what is SOAP” lol. Love it! I worked in a peds office for years. One of our doctors caught Luekemia from a complaint of sore throat! In our office we did a lot in house instead of sending patients out. One thing we did was our own CBCs. So the doctor saw that the child just didn’t look good, looked extra tired etc so after doing a standard strep test he decided to do CBC. BAM! Found Leukemia and sent them to the Children’s hospital in Atlanta. I got to work with amazing doctors that loved to teach and was able to catch some amazing rare things!
i think you're gonna be such a fun doctor, and after 20 years or so just write a book or something please, came here for no reason leaving entertained as hell
It seems pretty courageous to me that you talk about these insecurities so openly, because it's delicate to do that in such a profession where people wanna see a perfect image. But in fact I think this builds trust, because we can see here's an aspiring doc who's capable of self-reflection.
I’m so glad you made this video, it helped me realize that it’s ok to make mistakes or flat out not know what I’m doing because it doesn’t make me stupid or incompetent lol
I'm currently a Bsc Chem& Human Physiology student in South Africa and its going great but I really want to get into medicine when I finish my degree and watching this just made me feel really inspired! Love your videos!
the hypothetico-deductive model is an amazing and weird one. on one hand we are constantly worried about missing a serious disease but on the other we commonly miss out on the small minor details that leads to actual minor diseases. thanks for the video zach, will keep all these tips in mind!
I love how the story is cute and funny. How you didn’t know the baby was jaundice, I have 5 and most were jaundice. And your story did have a happy ending. My husband and I are very blessed that they are healthy and happy. Now that my family’s complete I’m going to medical school and love hearing your stories of what’s to come. So keep ‘em coming!
I always have a fear of being wrong when around a senior or attendant . And it feels that most PPL have it figured out. But listening to you reassures me that I may not be totally wrong or harmful to the patient. Thankyou for these and continue the series plllss 😍😍😍
Being a DOCTOR is NO walk in the Park…….You work CRAZY HOURS not paid enough for all of those hours and YET it’s up to YOU to make us BETTER……You Young MAN are a DIAMOND……..Tell us ALL of your TRUTHS…..You a AMAZING we need DOCTORS like you …..
I'm a dietitian and totally relate to how you felt about inpatient vs outpatient. I love getting to know people and forming relationships, I think it makes us better helpers.
It must be so rewarding and exciting to be able to apply the knowledge that you've accumulated over the years. I really really loved this vid man. Brought a smile on my face :) As a medical student seeing you so excited and passionate about this just makes me further excited and more in tune with my future goals. Keep up the great work Zach
As a 4th year student on my paeds rotation as well, I can absolutely relate to your inner thoughts because most of the time I'm also wondering what the hell is going on hahaha
hahaha love this bro!! need to do more of these lol hahaha your so comfortable on the camera and you can see how much you love what your doing bro!! can't wait to get to rotation
Ha! Forgive me, but I burst out laughing at your description of your pediatric round where you had to go into the 8 yr olds room & do the history & physical, by yourself. It could have been me talking: that was my Exact experience my first day working in the Med/Surg ICU (I was an RN) I went deaf, just like you. Thanks for making me know I wasn’t alone in my reaction (luckily I too recovered & got on with it, after a few minutes.
Many years ago I was a brand new RN, working my first job on a med surg floor and had a patient who needed a central line placed. She was quite old, dehydrated, nonverbal aside from moaning when repositioned and she was responsive to pain. She had moved around quite a bit when we attempted an IV. I gathered up the supplies and went back in with the surgical resident, it was the first time for me assisting/helping anyone with the procedure and I'm not gonna lie - I was excited but also nervous that I might not do something right. Apparently, it must've been a newer experience for the resident too. After prepping her skin & placing the drape he's got the needle in one hand and then kinda points with his other in the general direction of her neck and makes eye contact with me and motions as if to say: here? My facial expression had to be wild. I mouthed 'I DON'T KNOW!!' He was successful and it all went fine but man, talk about nerve wracking.
i was doing some quadriatic equations while listening to this and honestly it was quite enjoyable like hearing some person recount their experience of what they enjoy doing. tysm for this story time video and hope to see more of these in the future
You’re going to be a great doctor! I’m a really good judge of character, and I can tell you really get it…your responsibility as a physician and the unique position you’re in as a young man with the knowledge to take care of people. I hope you have a long long long successful career as a doctor and make every patient happy and healthy.
It's my 3rd day of summer. I'm trying not to think about med school for another month (I just finished my first year), but when I saw your video I had to click it and watch till the end. It's nice to know that everyone has embarrassing moments and it's fine if you mess up and say something incorrect infront of other doctors.
these stories are HILARIOUS hahah thanks for sharing, looking forward to telling some of my own soon. meanwhile studying for my pharmakology exam :( take care :) xx
Love how you’re sharing these experiences! I would like to point out though that not everyone grew up with a pediatrician 😬. Millions of people are uninsured in the United States (making just enough money to not qualify for Medicaid but too little to afford private health insurance), so most might not have had the privilege of taking their children to a pediatrician. (I know because I was one of those children 😔). Just wanted to point this out because the assumption made me cringe a few times 👍🏻
I think a lotta people don’t realise the thought that goes into getting this cinematic A-roll 🙌🏽. Great video dude, next time you should do it in the stream 😆
Thanks for a wonderous experience to learn how tiny when I was such a small baby who started to greet 'big daddy's eye' that I was excited to wander "are you really God of heaven (what the Bible says)?". You are great physician who show tenderness towards humanity.
I was at a renown children's hospital holding my sick 3 week old baby in the NICU when 2 med students came over. They were just supposed to be taking a history. They asked me more than once about drugs during pregnancy 🙄 which was a no. Then they asked if I felt my babies brain bleeding while I was pregnant. 😯 I looked at them and said "you want to know if inside of me, under layers of skin, connective tissue, fat and muscle inside my uterus through amniotic fluid I felt a blood vessel in my baby's skull rupture?" They looked at me with dopey grins and nodded! Then proceeded to tell me they thought my baby's brain was hemorrhaging! I told them we were done and to get me the neurologist now! Thankfully since I was holding the baby I knew it wasn't a hemorrhage or they would not have brought him to me after the MRI he would have gone to be prepped for surgery. Thankfully I also understood that I was in no way capable of feeling or being aware of this issue during pregnancy and bore no guilt for it. The panic and guilt this could have caused in another parent would have been huge. Be careful what you say.
Zach, I really hope these story times are going to be a series. Love your anki and 7 hour study sesh videos but this…this is gold
Thank you! I may make it something like that…
Love how the video is professionally done but still casual like a conversation 😍
I felt like I was sitting in front of him and listening the stories :)
I love watching these videos, you make things so realistic and show us that it is okay to make mistakes. Plus, you are a great storyteller!
Thank you!
When Ryan Gosling starts behaving like Tom Scott then it's really serious
Who’s Tom Scott
@@ZachHighley a UA-cam Legend. He makes short videos about random interesting topics. Also he only wears red shirts.

Exactly. And that will makes his channel fly
This is seriously so aspiring for a pre med student, i cant thank you enough zack

Oh my goodness this made me smile! 👏🏻😂love how you don’t take yourself too seriously. So cool you want to be in peds. You got this!

And this is just a small % of all the mistakes I’ve made…
I’m so happy to hear your stories, thank you for opening up. You’re gonna be a kind doctor. That’s going to set you apart.

I'm an anesthetist student and had a though day in the OR today. This video made me feel better knowing other students make mistakes and have "off" days too. Your story-telling skills are awesome btw!
This is why I think early clinical exposure is so important because its these experiences that keep you going.
Thx for sharing stories of your medical journey... Do us a favor and keep them coming Zach!
