Karen. Im amazed at how your English has improved in the last few weeks. I know you are speaking mainly English in Vietnam but your interview was so confident and professional. You should be really proud of yourself.
Hi Jill. Yes, the communication here is in English but I don't really speak so much. To be honest, I've been studying and Dave is also correcting my pronunciation. Probably that's why. Thanks for your words.
Thank you so much for this video! As a non-native filipino teacher who is planning to work in Vietnam this video gives me an idea on what to expect when applying for a teaching position in Vietnam. God bless you, Ma’am!
Very informative as a Filipino-American who has been speaking English for most of his life, I need to know the facts about teaching English in Vietnam. Thank you
It’s so funny how as someone born in the US, has 2 bachelors degrees, a masters degree, speaks English (NATIVE LEVEL bc I AM!!) , Korean (ETHNICALLY LEARNED FROM PARENTS), Spanish (FLUENTLY) being born and raised in Los Angeles, and with over 20 years of managerial experience in LAS VEGAS and SoCal, before he’s 40 years of age, will have a harder time than a non-native English teacher procuring a job just because he is ASIAN LOOKING!!!!
It’s very unfair, and it’s bad education policy too (because kids miss out on interacting with high-quality educators). While teaching in Asia, I felt and charted some good outcomes addressing anti-racist topics WITH THE KIDS. [I used social studies curriculum in my English language classes.] But with adults in administration, I (and other teachers) encountered pernicious chronic racism. Even when we’d win some hearts & minds over to valuing professionalism & ability over skin color, those new allies (often) couldn’t change the system. I pray for strength and tenacity for all fighting against racism ✊✊🏼✊🏿✊🏽: it’s a fight that requires endurance. 🙏
@@miahconnell23 Don't blame them.. as the Filipino teacher has stated, it is the parents perception of seeing Westerners as speaking and teaching better English than an non-white English teachers. You do know that they don't see the world as large as someone who are educated, lived aboard or well traveled
English words are very difficult for Spanish speakers to pronounce properly and vice versa. I think it is because Spanish and English have very similar alphabets but extremely different ways of pronouncing the vowels. It's not easy to abandon one set of rules for another. That said, Karen is learning English at a very fast rate. Bien hecho, Amiga!
Ola. Thanks for the video. It's very helpful. I've been thinking about teaching in Vietnam for a long time now. I have a degree, a TEFL and teaching experience (I used to run a school in Africa for a few years). I'm also a native English speaker from the UK. I have a couple of questions if you'd be so kind as to answer them for me. 1. Do you have to have a medical? Some people say yes, some people say no. Will I need to get one in the UK? They cost a lot here. What happens during a medical? I'm fairly fit and healthy, I hope. 2. How much money would you recommend I bring with me to live on before I find a job? 3. Is it a good idea do just arrive in Hanoi or Saigon as a tourist and then hope to find an English teaching job? 4. Is it possible to find private English teaching work - either "one on one" face to face or online? Thanks for your help :)
Karen's husband here. To answer your questions: 1. Get the medical here. It's for the visa and if you get it in Vietnam, it'll probably be cheaper and it'll have all the right information on. My job paid for my medical. What you will need is to have your documents legalised. This is very expensive and complicated. I paid a company £400 to do it for me. It's possible to do it yourself and save some money if you have time. Again, my school reimbursed me but that's not common. 2. To be safe, I'd say about £1000. You could probably do it for less. You won't be without work for long. 3. A lot of people find work through Facebook groups. You can check them out before you come. Some jobs offer flights and help with your relocation expenses if you apply from outside Vietnam. 4. Yes. There is lots and lots of work. If you want, send me your CV through our Facebook page and I can pass it on to where I work.
I am mexican and I worked as an English teacher in China and Vietnam...but my English is native. I admire you for your bravery! Your heavy accent wasn't a problem? Not to sound rude, but my current wife has a similar accent and I want to see if she can also get a job.
As I said, I'm not working as an English teacher. They offered me a job even though I have a heavy accent. They didn't hire me because I didn't have a certificate. The plan is to get a certificate and keep practicing to be able to get a good job. It's definitely possible.
Hi Karencita, is 25-30 dollars an hour a good salary in Mexico? (I mean big cities like Mexico city or Guadalajara). And do you think the cost of living in Mexico's big cities as listed are much higher than Hanoi?
I couldn't help but laugh when I read your comment. The minimum wage in Mexico is US$5 a day. Only very few people earn US$25-30 an hour in Mexico (managers probably). I lived in Mexico City and the cost of living is a bit higher than Hanoi. To get an idea about how Vietnam compares, check out the video my husband made about teaching in Mexico.
La Karencita gdp per capita of Mexico is really high (~9000 usd/year), but some sources said an average Mexican make about 400 per month. It’s kinda confusing so I think I shoulda ask a real Mexican. Tks!

It's very sad that VN is one the most discriminatory country when it comes to teaching English. Anything other than White is no good for them. There was a YT channel "Pho Your Eyes Only" few years back; the husband, Vietnamese born and raised in Canada and wife a White Canadian. Husband with college degree in Education, fully credited, wife not so. They both applied and interviewed for a job teaching English in Hanoi. Guess which one was hired? After a year, they went back to Canada. Pretty sad story indeed.
So, are you more confident or curious to work in Vietnam now? What do you think?
Neither. I’m Asian not Viet but I know how some Asians are. They always think whites can teach better. Not true in all cases.
