  • Vietnam is becoming very popular for expats due to the low cost of living. But is Vietnam as cheap as they say? How much do you need to live in Hanoi? Let us give you an idea about the cost of living and how much to budget as an expat living in Hanoi, Vietnam.
    Foreigners from all over the world are flocking to Vietnam due to the low cost of living and high salaries on offer for teachers of English as a foreign language. Is it really true that with just a degree and a TEFL certificate, you can live like a king in Vietmam?
    We've been in Hanoi, Vietnam for about 4 months now and my husband is working as an English teacher. We decided to share our monthly expenses with you to give you an idea about how much things cost and how much you will spend if you want to live in Vietnam.

    HeyKarencita! I was looking on UA-cam "Monthly cost of living Vietnam" and came across your video. So interesting! I made similar cost of living videos on Da Nang, Nha Trang, Saigon and Phu Quoc but your point of view is different and very interesting!     I pay USD 300 a month here for a apartment with 3 rooms, WC, Bath, Kitchen, Parking. 20 min from train station here in Japan.

    I've just received an employment offer at a university in Vietnam and these prices make accepting that offer so compelling. I've lived in China previously but Vietnam seems more interesting, more accessible, and cheaper. I'm very much looking forward to it.

      Thanks Arturo! It was very very hot and humid when we first got here. Now we're in November it's much milder. It's still warm but we're not sweating all the time any more. Apparently it'll get very cold soon though.

    Hi both, well I can certainly see why you have chosen to live in Vietnam, especially your transport costs! I remember Karen being shocked by how much a taxi was in the Uk. Looking forward to David's video on the different places he has taught and his experiences. Actually, someone was asking me today how many countries David has lived in.     It hurts my heart when people get scammed that badly on apartments. 500 is so much.

      I don't think we were scammed because it seems this area is more expensive (I saw more apartments around this area).
      What is true is that we could've gotten a cheaper apartment which would still have been very nice.

      @@LaKarencitaMX I get what you're saying. Before I moved here I was lucky enough to meet a few Vietnamese people online. A couple of them made their living renting places and renting them at higher prices to foreigners. Especially in the Tây Ho Westlake area. So I got a pretty good idea of what locals pay in the same area. That foreigner tax can be high.

      Go to Saigon, Vinhomes in district 1, those apartments easily range from $800 to $1500USD

    Planning to move to VN in a few years when I retire early. Was in Hanoi couple years ago and I liked it but I was staying by the Old Quarters and next to the lake.

    There is something I wonder about Vietnam... I am born in Hanoi but I am adopted to Sweden. I had thoughts about how the life is there, in case i would ever return.
    But, how is it to live there? Just thinking about the society and all, the dictation etc. Like, are you allowed to do stuff or is it super strict?

      Thanks a lot for your comment! It would be difficult to teach in Vietnam legally without a degree as it's one of the visa requirements. I believe that there is an exception if you can prove you have more than 2 years experience, though.

      500 in the us will be in the ghetto. Where I live in the US you can’t even rent a room in someone’s house for 500. A studio apt would be like 1300.

      We live here legally and we have visas. Because I got my visa as Dave's dependant, I don't have the right to work in Vietnam. That's why I make videos and teach on iTalki, because online work isn't subject to the same rules.
      There are English speaking churches here but I couldn't tell you their names.

    i live in canada, what other jobs can a north american get in vietnam other than teaching english?

      You need a visa, which means that you need to show that you can do a job that the Vietnamese people who are already here can't do.
      All native English speakers have a skill that most Vietnamese don't so it's easy to get a visa. If you have another skill that most Vietnamese don't have, look for work in that area.

      I doubt you'd be able to work as a mechanic here. There are mechanics everywhere. Also, I imagine you'd need to speak Vietnamese and I doubt the wages are very high. I don't think I've ever paid more than $10 for repairs.

      I don't know about the cheapest place in the world but it's certainly the cheapest place I've ever lived.
      For me at least, our lifestyle seems very comfortable. We could spend less but I think US$1,200/month for an apartment in the city centre, eating out several times a week, and monthly trips away is very reasonable.
