Subtle spell is a good way not to get Counterspelled, and to dispel/counterspell without being noticed. Probably my favorite role-playing one, and a very protective one to take in a mage-heavy campaign
subtle spell also lets you cast even while magically silenced, if your hands are bound and your mouth gagged . . . . hell even if you are effected by all three, it is a strong meta-magic, it won't be used as frequently as quickened spell or twinned spell, but when you do it will probably save your life
Besides, with the draconic bloodline this is the closest thing you can do to a Eragon inspired character, as been able to cast without the use of the old language ( Brazilian, so sorry if my translation is off ) was a big deal
@@thefracturedbutwhole5475 It also lets you cast in social situations without getting caught. Here's a freebie for all you 5th level sorcerers out there: Twinned Haste. It's quite possibly broken, especially if you cast it on two of your weapon-using buddies. Greater Invisibility is another great spell to twin at 7th level onwards.
Greater Invisibility I totally agree with, but Haste is super high risk, high reward. All the baddies have to do is break the sorcerer's concentration and two more of your party are useless for a round.
I played a divine soul sorcerer once and twined healing spells are so op it was awesome lol (for real though it makes having a single major healer in a very large party viable)
For 3rd level, Twin Elarge is so much fun. Helps your Barbarian or Fighter to grapple even better, or shrinks the enemy down to scale. Plus, 1d4 extra damage/less damage is always nice.
"No one chooses sorcery; the power chooses the sorcerer." *PC suddenly wants to multiclass into sorcery* "Okay. rudesby our last campaign gave us a level 20 sorcerer as a boss fight. He had twelve “lives”(other wizards sacrificing themselves to heal him). When he used one a wild magic surge was triggered. There was weird shit going down all fight
I love the mechanic so much I've got a room in a possible oneshot dungeon I've planned out that's so infused with chaotic magic that anyone who casts a spell inside needs to roll on the Wild Magic table. Because that has the potential to be AMAZING.
I'm DMing for my table at the moment, and one of my players (a guy with more experience than me in this arena) and I enjoy it so much that we've started playing "match-my-d20" for his Drow wizard (It's a world of my own, and the random magical spurts were his family's motivation for getting him trained, even though they didn't _quite_ raise to the level of a full fledged sorcerer. Plus, matching rolls is the same odds as rolling a predetermined number, with just _a bit_ more excitement). We're only a few fights in and it hasn't happened yet, but I found _THIS_ [ centralia.aquest.com/downloads/NLRMEv2.pdf ] online, and I am SO excited to bust it out...
As someone who's playing a Sorcerer long-term right now, this guide's pretty good overall but 2 of the recommendations can be rather poor. If your character is of Draconic Bloodline (or a Dwarf) then there is absolutely no reason to take Mage Armor since it will do literally nothing, definitely take Shield instead. Also Distant Spell is terrible, take a look at Empowered Spell instead if you don't like the look of either Twinned or Quickened Spell.
I'm playing a Divine Soul Sorcerer as seen in Xanathar's Guide. All of the above plus being able to use cleric spells as sorcerer spells, as well as having a free first level spell based on what type of god blessed your soul is very nice. I'm really feeling this character, and this subclass is amazing. I wonder if once Handbooker Helper is done if they'll go onto different books.
Never played DnD(nowhere close enough, and no way to get there), but I was always a fan of it. I like to mess around with build concepts as something of a hobby, and have always preferred Shadow Sorcery for some reason, but Storm Sorcery just sounds amazing...
Wild Magic sorcerer requires a DM willing to implement it properly. I played 1-4 as a wild magic sorcerer where I only rolled when I cast a level 1 or above spell. Nothing has happened yet. I've convinced my DM to change me to a holy soul sorcerer instead.
@@scw55 That's the way it's supposed to work. Technically when you cast a Sorcerer spell of level 1 or higher, your DM can make you roll a D20 and on a 1, then you roll on the Wild Magic Surge table. BTW, I found it hilarious (for some reason) that my first Wild Magic Surge had basically no effect since I was already blue. Either way, something normally unfavorable became favorable because I was a Drow.
With high charisma Empowered Spell is so useful for a damage focused sorcerer. Rerolling up to 5 dice and if you pair it with twinned spell you can reroll from EITHER damage pool. Divine Soul with Inflict Wounds? Walk up to two enemies, touch them both for 4d10 each using a single second level spell slot at level 3 (twinned spell costs 2 sorc points in this case) then burn your last sorc point to reroll up to 5 of those 8d10 to ensure some serious damage.

Mage Armor for any sorcerer that isn't Draconic Bloodline, otherwise, Shield Spell for sure. Sorcerers were my go to arcane spell casters, now they aren't too much anymore but I still love them.
in earlier editions, where wizards were worse, sorcerers really shined. When you manually had to prepare 1 shield, 1 web and 1 magic missile, and your slots werent flexible. Used the shield, never again that day. Sorcerers didnt have to deal with any of that.
Man I love sorcerers, the flavour has so much role play potential! I just wish they had the spells available to really let that role play opportunity shine!
I've been preparing a sorcerer. When the time comes, I plan to ask my DM's permission to re-skin any spells that aren't quite on theme (i.e. leave all the mechanics and damage types the same but alter the "flavor text" descriptions as needed).
Highly recommend subtle spell, RAW you could remain hidden casting spells into combat, and if you are restrained for any reason (manacled or swallowed being 2) as long as you have your arcane components you can cast spells! Incredibly useful to get out binds!
I understand the dilemma. If your going to play a aoe nuker and want to up your damage potential careful gives you an edge as you don't have to be as selective with targets. However, subtle gives you more versatility with casting by elimanating the verbal component of the spell, handy for more stealthy and underhanded spell use. Imagine casting literally any of the illusion spells at a dinner party...Phatasmal force - x you have an intense desire to profess your undying love to the turkey roast, and will defend its honor! :P
Holy shit thank you Critical Role, My friends have been trying to get me to play and I knew absolutely nothing about how to character build for DnD. This vid made it really simple and concise for me.
Still love the sorcerer from my first DM game. He was a changeling runechild, and disguised as a turnip farmer. "Magic Missile" became "Throwing a turnip". It was hilarious and noone was the wiser until the end.
WHOA! This one had colors!!! So cool! Like the length of the video too, this one was nice. Chris also makes an excellent host, his voice is really calming and gets you into thinking “this guy knows what I should do to make a sorcerer!”
The wild magic sorcerer is good for a laugh. The random role charts produce a lot amusing results. it even gives the DM a good chance to create even more weird random results!
Good starter guide, worth pointing out that the mage armor suggestion doesn't apply to draconic sorcerer as they have innate armor equal to what you'd get with mage armor.
He really is kind of zen and chill, no wonder they snagged him with as chaotic as they all can be. now I want him to be on the show and put his zen with Caduceus' zen.
Subtle spell is definitely the best. No verbal or somatic components for a spell. Does that make it immune to counterspell? According to Jeremy crawford, yes!
Playing a Divine Soul as my first ever full caster class... been loving it! Can't wait for my next feat to take magic initiate feat to be able to cure wounds through a familiar!
Finally, my favorite class. What a coincidence that I just retired my sorcerer with draconic blood at level 20 after she saved the world. I already miss my hero with dragon wings.
Ah the wild sorcerer, that feeling when your DM says ‘make a dex save’ with a wild sorcerer in your party at level 1, and you know that it’s time to roll up that cool rouge backup character

I’ve been trying out the Giant Soul Sorcerous Origin (it’s currently in the playtest phase) and I think it was a lot of cool stuff to offer by means of features and lore! Definitely would recommend for those that aren’t a huge fan of the squishiness of sorcerers.
I play a Wild Magic Sorcerer. Upon the first fight with her new companions, she sapped the health of the groups halfling druid and became a potted plant. Wasnt her proudest moment
Subtle spell is always overlooked and it is pretty great since you can cast while in stealth and not give away your position as well as being able to cast while in a silence spell
Fun Fact: Draconic Bloodline Sorcerer with Tough Feat, avg max hp is 3 less than a regular Barbarians average max hp. With that in mind they also have a base AC of 13+dex. You literally do best investing in high dex and multi classing into 1 level of fighter and get a shield + archery fighting style + second wind. Self heal, +2 to attacking with light cross bow(good for when you can't cast magic, also you're already proficient in it so that's at least a +4 to attack over all us your dex) and you get the ability to use shields aka a free +2 to AC, so basically you're AC is now 15 + dex.
Don't give Heightened Spell short shrift; it's pretty amazing. Imposing disadvantage on saving throws at will is a very powerful ability, unique to the class.
This was really good, only thing that stood out to me as potentially bad advice was suggesting Mage Armor over Shield imo, when one of the basic traits of a Draconic Bloodline Sorcerer is that you already have an AC of 13 + your Dexterity Modifier automatically, so Mage Armor does nothing. Obviously still good for Wild Magic Sorcerers, but still!

Or a Dragonborn draconic bloodline sorcerer with dragon hide.
He did most of the Blightshore lore, and surely a big part of the race/option Marisha is now playing with Laudna... :)
Uh, this dude is so chill and VERY good at explaining things. I love this video.
I like how in depth he went, felt like he could've gone deeper, but still explained more than most other HBH episodes
I love taking a 1 level dip into sorcerer as a bard player. Really opens up my options with both cantrips and divine soul gives me 3 baller spells.
Careful spell and subtle spells are my personal go-tos. But it is so hard to choose...
Subtle spell and a high deception go great together. "Where did that fireball come from?" "I dunno, I think he did it! Lets geddim!"
I like Twinned and Subtle as my first selections.
@@seraphicninja -- That and it's great for when you need to do hands-free magic. Say, when you're tied up in some gross necromancer's basement. :3
People don't realise that subtle spell let's you cast while tied up or gagged.
The baggy jumper/shirt thing, the soothing voice, the bald head.... Chris looks like early Matrix Neo. Chris is The One!!
Holy shit thank you Critical Role, My friends have been trying to get me to play and I knew absolutely nothing about how to character build for DnD. This vid made it really simple and concise for me.
This was so engaging and cool! Honestly I think this is the best one yet. Great job, Chris!
Still love the sorcerer from my first DM game. He was a changeling runechild, and disguised as a turnip farmer. "Magic Missile" became "Throwing a turnip". It was hilarious and noone was the wiser until the end.
sorcerer is one of the best classes
WHOA! This one had colors!!! So cool! Like the length of the video too, this one was nice. Chris also makes an excellent host, his voice is really calming and gets you into thinking “this guy knows what I should do to make a sorcerer!”
The wild magic sorcerer is good for a laugh. The random role charts produce a lot amusing results. it even gives the DM a good chance to create even more weird random results!
for .5 seconds i thought it was orion in the thumbnail, but i was pleasantly surprised to see chris :)
Good starter guide, worth pointing out that the mage armor suggestion doesn't apply to draconic sorcerer as they have innate armor equal to what you'd get with mage armor.
Totally unrelated, but I like that sweater 😊
He really is kind of zen and chill, no wonder they snagged him with as chaotic as they all can be. now I want him to be on the show and put his zen with Caduceus' zen.
wow, his voice is amazing. It's like, the diction is sharp but smooth.
I could listen to this man for an hour talking bout dnd
Subtle spell is definitely the best.
No verbal or somatic components for a spell.
Does that make it immune to counterspell?
According to Jeremy crawford, yes!
I’ve been waiting for this video for so long and it just so happens to come out of my birthday. What a wonderful day.
Good luck in your new endeavours, Chris, and thanks for all the awesome shots!
This is my favorite Handbooker yet.
I haven’t seen Chris Lockey on camera since the Machinima Respawn days. Good to have you back buddy!
I would absolutely love to see this guy play in an episode as a sorceror.
Yessssss...this is *my* class. I feel most connected to this class than any of the others - I was so excited to see this episode!!
Love they are getting other people to do this, Chris is very chill :)
Ooo, i like this guy. I would listen to him talk about basically anything.
I just started building a sorcerer when I saw this. I also appreciate the big sorcerer sleeves!
Ah the wild sorcerer, that feeling when your DM says ‘make a dex save’ with a wild sorcerer in your party at level 1, and you know that it’s time to roll up that cool rouge backup character
I knew Chris Lockey only from Machinima, more specifically machinima respawn, seeing him with critical role just makes sense
I love these videos so much, whoever thought of this is a friggin hero! I show these videos to the kids I volunteer for in my youth teamwork and creative thinking/writing program at my local YMCA. I live in Canada so no 826LA :(
My first sorcerer was a draconic one that worshipped Bahamut. Unleash the power of Dragons!
Chris: "I pick Mage Armor 9 times out of 10"
Draconic Resilience: "Am I some kind of joke to you??"
Claire Deming but who doesn’t use wild magic lmao
@@ramen8130 I perfer Draconic Bloodline or Shadow Sorcery
Wolvesbayne 156 then your opinion is wrong I guess
@@ramen8130 How the fuck is my opinion wrong?? I was just saying which ones I perfer, sorry I don't like random bullshit in happening to my character, or the enemies or the other members of the party
@@ancientreddragon5617 "I Don't like random bullshit happening" What a hilarious thing to say on a D&D discussion lmao
I want this guys sweater. It looks so comfy!
The Duke of Hurl is magical.
Sorcerers are cool, my party went through a wild magic zone last week, I was looking forward to zapping them with something, but with 3 spellcasters, they didn't get a single negative effect. And they want to come back to it later and harness the power of the wild magic to run a factory...
Very helpful! I enjoy the 5min format cuz there’s a lot to sorcerers! Great job!
Haven't seen this man since the 'ol Machinima days. Good to see him again C:
My first d&d caracter was a sorcerer! Really liked her, i hope i can play her again one day!
I’ve been trying out the Giant Soul Sorcerous Origin (it’s currently in the playtest phase) and I think it was a lot of cool stuff to offer by means of features and lore! Definitely would recommend for those that aren’t a huge fan of the squishiness of sorcerers.
Once played with a wild magic Sorcerer in the party, 10/10 would do again. The rare sudden chaos is worth it.
I feel like he underestimated the raw power of the sorcerer. My favorite combo is the quickened scorching ray and firebolt, a true flame blast.
Fun Fact:
Draconic Bloodline Sorcerer with Tough Feat, avg max hp is 3 less than a regular Barbarians average max hp.
Other then recommending distant spell this is a really good basic guide.
Such a charismatic presenter! Will make a good sorcerer.
I was hoping for Mark Hulmes.
I just learned how to build a Sorcerer from Patches lol. Another great episode, Chris is amazing and so chill.
Divine soul with subtle casting... Geas
I only remember Chris Lockey Machinama Respawn... He sure looks more civilized now hahaha
This persons voice is the most relaxing thing I have ever heard.
It's like he has the sooth animal spell ready at all times.
Informative and fun. I really want to play a sorcerer, and was Chris here was quite delightful.
I feel like this guy would make a very awesome voice actor for some reason.
i just joined a new game and i'll be playing a sorcerer for the first time! perfect timing.
"Then you sent ya damn self. And don't say we didn't warn you." This whole episode was great and that last line made it all the better lol
I love how Fireball on yourself has a 5% chance of having a 2% chance of happening, and it's still mentioned in every Sorcerer conversation.
This is definitely the best shaved head sorcerer player who's ever been a part of Critical Role ;)
