How To Use Gold Leaf to Gild A Frame

- Learn how to gild a wooden frame with imitation gold leaf and finish the frame with spray lacquer. Gilding is the centuries-old craft of applying thin sheets of gold, silver or other metals to make frames, furniture or other decorative pieces appear to be made of precious metal. You can apply 23-karat gold leaf, but I use imitation leaf from Mohawk Finishing Products for this project, which costs much less than the genuine precious metal but creates a very realistic look. Gilding does take some practice but the results are definitely worth it. Here's a complete list of gilding and finishing products used in this project.

That really adds class to the frame! I am always amazed when I visit art shows, how many artist display their hard work in shoddy frames or no frames at all. Great informative video. Thanks Jon.
I really like the way the red comes through---
I'll be honest. I'm not feeling the gold leaf. But, I still think this was a great video. The tip about having your art ready to roll for the client, fantastic. The process, fantastic. Thank you for making this.
Thank you for taking the time to create detailed steps. I will be following then on my next picture framing work. Thanks for sharing the knowledge.
Wow looks so nice. Great video.
Thank You for Allowing Us To Watch You. A true craftsman at work at his trade...... joined
Hey Jon, your work is amazing! You make this look so easy, great finish.
Thanks Jon, this was well worth revisiting.
Hi all, and I posted a gold leaf video a few years ago but felt I should make a new one more on point and with better audio and video quality.
Gild. A guild is a group with a common business interest, like the Screen Actors Guild. Gilding is applying gold.
Your previous video where you made the frames was already inspiring and with this video you bring me ideas again.
Your videos are always a pleasure to watch and I think I am not the only one to see the number of subscribers.
Jon, keep making such nice videos!
Pretty cooooool! I like it and will frame some of my work using the gold leaf.👍
Nice work Jon! 👍🏻👊🏻
Great video John!
I used to be a framer for museums in Santa Fe, I love the gold leaf. I’m curious what these frames would go for these days as I did it in early 2000’s
Jon - Nicely done. A tip for working with gold leaf: If you use a squirrel hair brush to pick up the leaf and apply it to the sizing it will lie very flat and smooth.
Good video Jon! Thank you for sharing it with us.👍😎JP
Beautiful work Jon! It's very obvious that you possess that artistic eye............. :)
Well done Happy Thanksgiving Jon
Good one.
Hi...I love this video..very well thought out. I did not see the resource/materials you said would be below the video? Thank you.
I thought I had seen you do this before and I see now that I had :>).
thanks
I have a customer wanting gold leaf put on a hand routed Sign I was wondering would water based polycrylic be alright for a top coat over the leaf?
Wow, I never thought I’d like gold flake outside government buildings, but those frames turned out great!
Nice, thanks for the tutorial, do you ever see an imitation white gold leaf? Saw the real thing and wow- it has such a beautiful warmth.
Would you paint blue underneath the silver leaf?
Not yet! But sounds cool
Good
The main reason it's better to buy art that's already framed is because the cost of getting it framed is often more expensive than the art itself. Speaking from experience here.
how much would you charge for a frame that is 2 feet x 2 feet, the glass is 2 feet x 2 feet x 1/4 inch thick?
Wow, that must be very thick leaf. The stuff I have is more like vapour!
Oh...it's not real gold??
What kind of glue do You use?
Show de bola
Share 👍
What sort of a spray system do you use?
I’ve got an old Eagle hvlp and I also have an inexpensive Rockler hvlp
Thank you:)
fuck yeah! I love gooooooooooooolllllllld!
If it's not a gold then you will get patine faster than you think
Why not real water gilded gold leaf with proper gesso and bole? Art deserves the finest craft, not imitation.
I like a lot of your work… But not that. Not a fan of the goldleaf stuff at all, and I build lots of frames for artists.
0:35 “penis tape”? did I hear correctly? do I dare google this?
