The thing I noticed about using fake and real gold leaf is that the fake stuff doesn't look bad ... until you see the real stuff beside it. Then it's night and day.
Yes, that's really true. looking back at my experiences with other gilding methods like the one from the targe, the difference would be even larger. But where in "daily re-enactment live" do you have such a close comparison? :(
Gold leaf must be brilliant for adding corrosion resistance to high carbon steel; I sweat really heavily in my armor, I'm going to try adding some guilding inside where I've noticed and had to maintain corrosion and pitting on some parts. Spray beak cleaner is my favorite thing for degreasing metal
@@cascadianrangers728 As a chemist I say you it's very bad method for corrosion reststance... If you plating WHOLE item, it's OK, but if you have mixed surface - gold plated and "clean", if you'll not protect it (f.e. some transparent varnish), you can ruin it. Precious metal (f.e. gold) plus base metal (f.e. iron) plus water (always in air) gives electrochemical cell, what means corrosion. Gilding with gold leaf ON some non-conductive base (f.e. oil mixtion) is better, because there is no electric contact between metals... Of course if you proper protect such mixed surface (electroplated and non-electroplated) with some hydrophobic agents (f.e. oils, especially in guns) can protect it. But using gold as "corrosion resistant layer" for protection of high carbon steel object, which somebody use it for fighting (sweat, bad weather and impacts) is rather bad idea, because gold will accelerate corrosion, when golden layer will be damaged (easy after impact). If you want to have beautiful shining helmet, standing on your desk - it's OK. If you want to fight in it - no, no, no.
@@CatboyChemicalSocietykinda a lie the tools usually cost more. A good decent kit alone runs around 600 USD and above for brush plating. Plus don't forget that brush plating is very risky on steel due to the chemicals speeding up oxidation. For experienced people it's fine but not a fun time for newbies. I've seen way to many people ruin their projects because it started to rust the next day. Either way it's gonna be a good bit of money since your working with gold, whether it be through electro or leaf
Doesnt the gold scrape off the second something slightly scratches it? I cant see it hold long when you get hit in the face with a sword. Edit: Nevermind I just watched the ending lol

Wow, nice armor, each and every rivit is so small and so preferct and uniform, the articulation also looks extensive; I would love to see the gauntlets, something worth of guilding indeed! This looks like it was made for tournament of foot, and not jousting or mounted use?

I wish this was done with proper fire gilding, dissolving gold in mercury and etching the gold onto the steel.
