Remember this day well. I was in a bus load from the Borders. None of us had tickets. The guy at the gate was slipped a few notes and we all jumped the turnstile. Take the official attendance with a huge pinch of salt. Biggest cheer of the day was news that Southampton had beaten Man Utd in FA cup final!
the summer of the century loomed after this game,uk baked for about 3 months solid without rain. i remember cheering when it first rained,how times have changed!
My first memory being taken with my dad,I was 10 at the time , my first big day out to see the gers,remember being told it was the first cup final that rangers were ahead before official K.O time (game kicked off at 2.58pm,big DJscored a minute later)-....1-0 at 2.59pm
Crap day, game kicked off early so we were a goal down before 3pm, not that I seen it as we only got in as the 2nd goal was going in. Still it made 1998 a bit sweeter.
You are spot on about the gate at the Celtic end being forced open. Our bus had broken down and we never got to Hampden till just on half time, in fact as we reached the top of the terracing, wee Doddie scored the second.(Hated him then but later in life love the wee man)! I remember clearly a Hearts supporter getting arrested , and handing me his flag, "Hampden 76" on it, covered in blood!! If we had one the cup that day, we would not have got out alive. Scarey expierence!!
It had been forced open shortly before the kick off myself and thousands of others ran in and up the terracing! people were going mad cos we never thought the game had started and people were saying big D.J had scored..In those days at Ibrox and Hampden and other grounds in Scotland it was a miracle that there were not more crowd disasters and deaths .with the arrival of huge crowds of drunken fans it was a nightmare for the Police and authorities to deal with. Tickets? who cared.? The fans thought up any means to get in by hook or by crook. and the last resort was rushing the doors.,both inside and outside the grounds.Older gers fans will remember the "football specials trains to wherever Rangers were playing. Everyone took a "kerry oot" on to those trains.!! No one in their right mind ever paid for a ticket.It was absolutely crazy. Youngsters now cannot imagine the bedlam and mayhem at most big games then,and before seating ,and no drinking were introduced.The Police have it so easy nowadays that they jail wee boys for singing and next to nothing. just to justify their jobs. None of the present day Police would have been able to handle what went on back then . It was bedlam.Those were the Days!
@8busby It was also my first cup final though I was slightly younger than you, the standard view from most Rangers fans I have spoken to and on followfollow website were sure the crowd was more than the estimated attendance. Apparently a gate was forced open at the Celtic end and loads of supporters fired in. Its also true that bottles cans and punches were exchanged among the rival fans however I have no recollection of seeing this thankfully. I used to wear a hard hat at games, just in case !!
Yes that's true. I remember I was there with my dad and we leftearly because of the bottles being thrown. One just missed my head! Then we left. It was an experience I'll never forgot.
My first Scottish cup final......Hearts were a poor side and only got to the final after beating Dumbarton in the semis after a replay ! Still it was a great day out ,but a disappointing start to the game !

The game kicked off a minute early for some reason, and Rangers scored in under 40 seconds, so they were already ahead at 3pm.

Talking of attendance, the OFFICIAL crowd was 85,000, which seems pretty good. I wonder what the ACTUAL crowd was?
