  • Ironman 70.3 Morro Bay was a test of my will. The swim was cold and hard. The days before the race, the water was between 52 and 54 degrees, and somehow miraculously, on race morning, it was 57°. It felt the same. The race started with almost 1600 people, and 300+ didn’t finish the swim. A current started coming into the bay as the first waves went out, and it got worse and worse. People were being swept away and were in the water for up to two hours, waiting to be picked up by boat. They hung on the sides of kayaks, docked boats, and buoys. Over 500 didn’t finish the race. Only 1100 finished.

    it's Ironman's job to know the conditions in the water where they are holding a race. this was a dangerous failure by IM any way you look at it. they're lucky as hell no one died!

    Normally, water conditions worsens as time passes. That's why I gave emphasis on improving my swim pace rather than JUST finishing the swim. And being a stronger swimmer can also help with such conditions..

    Thanks for sharing. Good job on completing and competing the race. I think the brown foam and stinky green foam in the swim reeked havoc on many people’s bellies, including mine.

    I live in this area and have sailed in and out of that harbor mouth dozens of times. Anyone and everyone that lives here knows about the tidal currents here and how fast they are.
    The surf report is literally on the radio here every single day with the times of the high and low tides.
    Hopefully people learned to check the tide tables and schedule around slack tide.

      Which also means the race organizers should know about the currents also. They made a horrible decision in proceeding with this race.

    Congrats!! I’m watching from NC and super pumped about you coming to Wilmington. I have no doubt that you will go sub 4:40 there! You can absolutely hammer on the bike and the run is flat and mostly shaded. I’ve don’t it the last two years but won’t be there this year. Best of luck. Love the channel. I was in Chattanooga this past weekend and hope to get a video out soon on it!!

    Bad swim conditions, two sh*ts and still a 5:06. That’s great man. I loved that course last year. Sorry you had an off day but thats racing, all the stars have to align and each race is a learning experience

    I was one of those who got stucked in the middle of the water.The water was so cold.After we made around in the big U that's where the strong current hit us.No matter how strong my strong it's useless because I'm not moving forward instead the water current pushed me back far away to the bouy.Trying to talked to the volunteer what's going on why I did not moving it's took me almost 30 minutes fighting that water current but the rescuer pulled me up because i cannot make it anymore the cut off time.Despite of that brutal experienced I will never give up life must go on.We are an Ironman!We love challenges 🏊‍♂️🚴🏃‍♂️💪

    Wow. Given those conditions you did fantastic. Sounds brutal all around. Curious on your compression socks. Do you wear those due to previous calf issues or to avoid an injury?

    I have always had GI issues after being in the Army. Ever considered taking Imodium just prior to a race? Not sure what this would do to nutrient uptake/absorption. I’m terrified of having an issue on a run or bike leg. Any advice?

    Very sad to hear about the current coming in! Scratch this event OFF my list forever, lol. This happened at Ironman Louisville in the Ohio River in 2014…heavy rains in the preceding days led to a strong current on race day. The start of the swim was upriver, which is ridiculous. I was able to finish but decided I would never do another 140.6 or 70.3 unless it was a lake swim. Too many variables and dumb race director decisions.

    That race was crazy. Do you think your GI issues were related to the swim? I felt off the whole run and I thought it was due to the amount of saltwater etc that I inadvertently consumed.

      Maybe it was the water. I was also very congested out of the swim and while I tried to blow a lot of that out on the bike, I know a lot of that was going into my gut.

    What did you eat the day before? My friend and I had stomach issues too. We had a Lox Bagel at Dorns the day before!!!

      I had stomach issues too, as did two other people in my club! I had pizza from pizza port the day before but I ate there multiple times during the weekend and was fine before the run.
      I think something might have been in the water. Did you also swim through that mysterious brown foam near the end?

    I started at 6:22, I'm a strong but slow/steady swimmer and I had to really open it up to stay on the course. I got hit and swam over by many swimmers who maybe didn't know they were in a current... this was my only race I felt in danger, especially from other swimmers

    I really think IM should give race credit give the mismanagement and the number of people who were able to sneak back in, although I imagine they will get a DQ once results are reviewed.

    It seemed to me like way too many people were underprepared for the swim. I was watching people in the ~35min groups that very clearly were not capable swimmers. I would have seeded some of these people closer to the hour mark on a good day. Yes these are organized events with safety protocols, but they are still extremely challenging events that require a lot of prep and experience. I hear way too many people say they’ve only done one or two Olympic distances before going 70.3. It doesn’t mean you can’t make the jump, but you shouldn’t take the difference lightly because they are totally different beasts.
    I hope this isn’t too callous or negative, because I totally get how frustrating it can be to not perform at the level representative of your training. Just being realistic. It’s important that people understand there is inherit risk and variability, and training should include preparation for those potentially dangerous conditions.
    For reference, I place myself in the 40 min group. I’m a relatively strong swimmer, just conservative so that I don’t get swam over or block the better swimmers. I finished at 55min and I was also slightly disappointed because I felt like I had a strong swim.
    I never felt panicked or worried, but I could feel other swimmers around me panicking, especially when the wake and chop picked up from swimmers flailing and rescues happening. I also never felt cold - the water actually felt pretty comfortable to me - though I wasn’t in it as long as many others. That said, I think it’s because I have the luxury of being able to train in the cold San Francisco water with current and chop; it’s not just pool training. I think it’s crucial that competitors understand that a “protected” swim doesn’t necessarily mean warm, currentless, etc. Now if this was a true wave start, I think the same thing would’ve happened but with less rescues. More people simply wouldn’t be able to get out past the breakers and have to turn around.

      The majority of athletes aren’t training in these conditions with a current that can’t be overcome. Doing so proves nothing, all it does is drive folks away who paid good money to participate. 500 folks are now all saying “F that race” I’ll find a lake swim with zero current. They will tell 5,000 people to stay away from this race…you get the picture.

    It just seems like it’s happening more frequently with Ironman races that they are not taking care of the athletes. Seems like money is becoming the driving force behind the brand and it’s becoming dangerous for the triathlete, so sad ….

    You have to consume 33oz per hour or more of water and only maltodextrin, fructose and salt citrate. In addition to having breakfast 4 hours before and you will never have pain or vomiting. Treat it!

    Dude, don’t say “know one knew this”! It’s called a TIDE CHART! Anyone that lives on the ocean, knows what a tide chart is and how to read it! Ironman is just freaking lucky that nobody died….yes, it could have been prevented!

    Yeah I was wondering what was going on with the swim when I saw your split. Then of course a post popped up on Slowtwitch about it.
