Hey Everyone! ) I’m Anna and welcome to my channel. Here, I post some useful information for English learners. I’m from Ukraine and I’ve worked on my English and accent, for the most part, on my own, but you can find out and trace my story by watching my videos. I’ve been studying American pronunciation for a long time, and I still do, and I guess I always will - because it’s not math. Learning a language, it’s a lifetime journey. I know exactly what it takes to become fluent and acquire an accent in a non-English speaking country, and I’ve never even been to one. And I’m sharing this information here - on my channel.

In my experience, I found that the key to learn not only English, but I believe also anything else, is in learning how to manage hormones of pleasure and motivation, like endorphin and dopamine. How? Making sure to keep the feeling of reward as a result of your studies. When you notice that the production of these hormones will be coming from you studying English specifically, it will give you the feeling of reward you need to keep yourself motivated.
Why is it important? If you don't know how to keep yourself motivated, literally everything will start being boring for you and you'll simply learn way slower than you could, even though you'll still be studying. That's how many people give up; their studies aren't producing the hormones of pleasure and motivation they need.
So that means no matter how great the method you picked is, if you don't manage motivation well, you will take way longer to learn, which of course will decrease the sense of reward with learning the language even more and eventually you'll quit.
For example, you saw someone that studies for many hours and that person says they feel great and motivated, but is studying that many hours gonna keep you motivated like them? If the amount of content you learn from studying hours won't be as great, you might not feel that reward feeling he felt, so I think you should study your own self first to learn if that's the right amount of time for you. If it gets boring, it's going to become a snowball that will end up with you quitting.
Also studying and learning are two different things. Study to understand. Learn what you understood.
But if you want to really improve your English or any other language skills, you need to listen to hours of content that you CARE ABOUT, that you are deeply interested in. Why? This way your main focus will be on absorbing the information that you really want to, and while you do that, you'll get used to every pattern of conversations that people use while communicating through that language. Also what will happen is that the new words you learn (I advise to learn the most common words first), if they are common, you'll automatically hear them in context, very fast and naturally.
Something else I think you need to know is that, all the vocabulary you're learning, even if you use Anki with words in a good context instead of isolated, will have to "move from your analytical kind of mental processing" to total intuition. That means when you say or listen to a sentence, you won't even be thinking about the words' meaning in your native language, you'll naturally link the symbols(which are the words), to the thing itself in the real world, instead of first having to return to another language, which is your mother tongue, to make the connection between the symbol and the object. And that comes when you listen A LOT and every day, but not as a boring activity that will drain your motivation, but as a way of you getting the information you really want to. It could be anything, from entertainment to political live stream conversations, which is the ones I picked for being harder, faster and where I can just listen without worrying about understanding, just getting used to all the patterns of the language and eventually understanding it more and more as I increase my, intellectual, physical and intuitive knowledge of the language.
I'm now learning French, and when think of a little French kid, I know they didn't learn French by, for example, linking the words "la robe", to another language in order to understand, they are directly shown an actual dress. Of course we need to look at the meaning of the things that we can't simply see, but if we rely more than we should on that, all our knowledge will be stored in a sort of "analytical processing region" of our brain and that can't make us speak in a natural way and we'll still not understand most of it either. It must be practiced and listened a lot, so that it becomes intuitive and with no intermediate between the word we learned and the thing it refers to.
Anyways, that's just my point of view, but I think it could be helpful to some people.

    • @forg6641
      @forg6641 2 роки тому +17

I don't know why your comment is so underrated - I think that you made a couple of great points. Thanks for putting your time and effort into typing that out.
I highly agree with the motivation and hormones thing, especially when it comes to learning languages because it's something I experienced on my own. Around 4 years ago language learning became my hobby. I've tried a couple of languages and numerous methods, but I wasn't getting any good at them for some reason. It changed once I discovered the love of my life - Norwegian. After two and a half years of learning, I'm still extremely excited to read another text, listen to another song in this language, or even read about grammatical rules. The huge motivation and enthusiasm are the things that made me fully conversational (and hopefully fluent someday!) in my third language.
I think that the only exception might be English. I wonder how helpful the motivation really is when we're talking about something so mainstream. If you want to engage on the internet, you almost need to know it, and that's why I think that anyone, especially the youngest generation can learn it if they only find their own place in it. I might be a good example of that - I went from A2 to a strong B2 level within two years without any books, just by engaging with a group of people online with whom I shared interests and became friends with. That forced me to use the language for hours a day if I wanted to keep in touch with them. I started recognizing grammatical patterns and acquiring new vocabulary. If I wanted to use a new word, I had to look it up, over and over, until it finally stuck in my long-term memory. It may or may not be a good method (especially if it's the only one being used), depending on the way you look at it, but I like how far I got without thinking about it, nor considering it studying.
I only started "actually studying" a few months ago, as I'd like to pass the Cambridge Advanced English test and obviously that's not enough for it at all. Also, good luck with your French!

Now what I do is keep practicing it, for example speaking to Americans on a regular basis, writing stuff in english, looking things up in English, studying my favourite subjects in English and what not. Now every person tells me I sound so natural and I'm so happy to hear that.

True.! I'd like to call it immersion. I live in Korea and we don't normally use English in daily life except for a very few cases. Honestly it is enough to use only Korean language here to get by. But my goal is to use English every day. I simply do reading, listening, writing, and speaking (alone) a lot online. I don't need a native English speaker to practice with because there are so many good English materials on Internet. Of course, if I live with Americans, it'd be better for my English but it's not easy and possible. That's how I can maintain my fluency level by just doing on my own. Whenever my acquaintances or strangers ask me how I'm good at English, I can't fully explain it to them because my lifestyle is totally different from them.! I always indulge in watching and reading stuff written in English whereas they only stick to Korean stuff like tv programs or blog posts. I'm glad a like-minded person exists like you living in a different world. I just love the English language itself and the self-passion has driven me up to this point that I can simply use and understand English every day by myself without any big difficulties. Thank you for sharing your video.!⭐😀

My goal is to express myself clearly and confidently in conversational English. I used to think that learning this language should focus more on grammar. However, when I tried to speak, I found myself struggling so bad that I started to stutter. Needless to say, I was so disappointed with myself. Then I tried a different approach. I use Tiktok, where I follow many native English speakers. It helps me to familiarize with how they commonly talk, how they converse with one another, and how they construct their sentences. I also surround myself with English content. Trying to acquire this language by myself is difficult but I’m improving slowly but surely.

In my opinion, I’m not an expert in the English language, but as a nonnative English speaker/user, I feel like this: if I focus on my mother tongue or my native language, I absorbed it in natural way mainly by using my ears (mainly hearing) at the beginning, but subsequently, I gradually gained skills/abilities of it by reading/ listening or by practicing the language or by doing studies related to my mother tongue. Once I achieve a particular goal, I could say that I’ve learnt it. So, studying implies “what activities we practice to achieve our language goals”. (This is not to be against you but my opinion! In fact, I really love watching your videos here) Good Luck…

I've been actually doing what you've in this video and trust me it works. I love in a place where nobody speaks English but I somehow created a routine of watching English content. Thinking back how I started to learn English, frankly I didn't even remember it. To be honest, I don't speak much, but my listening skills has experienced gradual improvement. I don't have to memorize sentences, the words just flows through my mouth like a native speaker. My current goal is to improve my speaking skills and understand native speakers in noisy environment. Never cease to learn!
