1:16:11 To be fair, the Ceratosaurus is depicted as a competent hunter in its own right in When Dinosaurs Roamed America (2001) and, at least, the Allosaurus only killed a Ceratosaurus once. Plus, the Allosaurus killing the Ceratosaurus could be justified there by the former predator simply being opportunistic.

I also don't understand why Ceratosaurus is presented as the "runt" among the Morrison carnivores when it was actually the 3rd largest in its ecosystem. There were plenty of smaller carnivores in that same environment: Marshosaurus, Stokesosaurus, Ornitholestes, Coelurus, etc. Yet its always Ceratosaurus thats the runt struggling to survive. But as the third largest carnivore in its environment one could compare it to an African Leopard (the 3rd largest in its environment), yet Leopards are generally respected. Also this is purely from the immature size worshipping perspective, in reality all dinosaurs are awesome, even the tiniest.

A big issue I have with all the "x species outcompeted y species" theories is that, usually, both lineages co-exist in the same area for a long time. So why does one species only get outcompeted when the other reaches 1.5x its weight or more? If one species is already more advanced in every way and competes for the exact same resources, then wouldn't the other go extinct way earlier?
The only time outcompetition seems believable to me is when 1) the removal of habitat boundaries is what brings the two species together (giving the "lesser" species no time to adapt), 2) the species overlap _very briefly_ in time, and 3) both species occupy the same territories before one goes extinct. Otherwise, there are way too many other variables that can cause the extinction of the "outcompeted" species. And from what I know, the only species that have gotten purely "outcompeted" to extinction are the ones that humans wiped out...

53:15 they probably meant to talk about Leopards since in areas with larger predators(Lions and Tigers) they are mid-small sized prey hunters(Although it’s still not a completely flawless comparison as places like Sri Lanka, the Congo and the Middle East all have Leopards as their main apex predators)

Why do people assume that Cerato and Allo are like Hyenas and Lions?
Hyenas and Lions clash so much because they share the same niche. They hunt the exact same prey, in the exact same locations, at the exact same time.
Thing is, there’s plenty of food for both, and they’ve coexisted like this since the Plio-Pleistocene, and will likely continue if both survive the Anthropocene.
Cerato and Allo would be more than capable of surviving together. ESPECIALLY since they don’t share the same niche.

It seems to me that most non-avian reptiles hunting in packs are the result of a "feeding frenzy", ie, they all attack the same prey, but it's not a coordinated effort they're just trying to eat the same thing.
That's exactly what crocodiles do, they're not there in a pack hunting with coordination, it's just that they all know that the animals will cross the river there, so they wait, and when they do and one crocodile bite a wilderbeest or a zebra, that particular animal become an easy target and all will start to eat it.
As for birds, I think a lot of birds of prey hunt in pairs, but it's more like they live in pairs, because they're monogamous and loyal, and will hunt together. But as birds of prey won't usually hunt big animals, there's no real advantage to hunt in pairs, they'll just catch a rabbit each XD

I’ll be eager to see how your next Paleo Myths video on pack-hunting dromaeosaurs turns out, whenever time and scheduling permits you of course.
For now, I predict it will earn a “Back to Formula” rating at best. Though, I don’t quite see it earning a rating as low as LEGO Morgan Freeman’s meme, since killing this myth totally would probably require proof that not a single dromaeosaur species that ever existed hunted in actual family groups. And I would be surprised if the entire dromaeosaur lineage throughout those millions of years did not have at least one exception, such as pride-hunting lions versus other pantherine cats, or those Harris’ hawks you mentioned.

    • @bkjeong4302
      @bkjeong4302 7 місяців тому +2

The issue with that one is that all the arguments AGAINST pack hunting in dromaeosaurs (or any other theropod) are actually based on OUTDATED ideas about living animal behaviour, so even though it’s the newer paradigm it’s been outdated from the start. It’s honestly frustrating to see those arguments be stated as fact as they’re damaging to the understanding of (and public opinions on) various living animals and not just dromaeosaurs or other extinct theropods.
      - Cooperative hunting is NOT a trait mostly limited to mammals (partly because cooperative hunting is relatively rare in mammals, and partly because it’s more common than previously assumed outside of mammals-and I mean genuine cooperation here, NOT mobbing of prey where the predators are not working together).
      - Cooperative hunting and infighting are not mutually exclusive. To start with, there are animals like crocodilians (no, crocodilians are not restricted to mobbing prey), sea lions, and Humboldt squid that are very prone to infighting within a group over food but are still able to hunt cooperatively. For another, the fossil record can only reveal intraspecific conflicts happened in a given taxon-it has no way of revealing if these conflicts represent actual infighting or conflicts between two groups of the same species (which is very common even in group-hunting predators with minimal infighting such as wolves or lions; even though wolves within a pack rarely fight, they absolutely will fight and kill wolves from other packs).
      - lastly, the idea dromaeosaurs could not have hunted cooperatively due to having precocial offspring (with no dietary overlap between adults and juveniles, indicating a lack of long-term family groups) is also dependent on a false dichotomy; that a lack of family groups is mutually exclusive with cooperative hunting, which isn’t the case in living animals. The majority of extant cooperatively-hunting animals don’t actually live in family groups as wolves, lions or orcas do, but hunt cooperatively either in social groups of mostly unrelated individuals (humpback whales, sea lions, some seabirds (pelicans most prominently), Eleonora’s falcons, several corvids, various predatory fishes) or even on an ad hoc basis with otherwise solitary hunters forming temporary but organized alliances (crocodilians; also see cooperation between different species of predators, like that between coyotes and American badgers or between various coral reef predatory fishes and/or the day octopus).
So the main three arguments against cooperative hunting in dromaeosaurs-or any other theropod-were always based on invalid arguments and false information. The only real compelling argument against cooperative hunting in dromaeosaurs is that it’s the minority in terrestrial predators (note that the vast majority of cooperatively-hunting animals I mentioned hunt mostly or entirely in the water), but that applies to the relatively few extant terrestrial cooperative hunters we do have, so it’s hardly an ironclad claim.

50:20 that's definitely true. Since different species tend to have at least a bit of difference in their niches, they never have to compete with each other as heavily as members of the same species. With the exception of mates and family members, animals almost always hate others of their species, unless there's a benefit to staying together that's higher than the cost.

As far as I know, even lions and hyenas, that are like the closest thing we have in nature of two nemesis species, as they often compete for the same preys and have the same ecological niche (yeah hyenas are more scavenger, but we've observed in some parts of Africa where they're more numerous than lions that they become the apex predators and lions eat the rest ˆˆ) share their territory with each other and will clash only near carcasses or things like that.
Generally, you don't drive off other animals for the potential of them hunting your food, that would be a colossal loss of energy, when predators are territorial, it's almost always male predators driving off other males from their territory that overlap with several female territories, it's for sex. And you don't do sex with other species XD

    Hi Mr. Red Raptor!
    Great job as ever.
If you're up for a try, wouldn't you give a chance to the italian dockumentary minisereries broadcast in 1992 "Il Pianeta dei Dinosauri" ("Planet of Dinosaurs" in english)? It is available on yt. With the help of subtitles I think it should give you a surprise. Logically, of you would ever male a video on it the section of "outdated" would be large, but still I am sure that the approach of the creators would find your please.
    My best regards to You!

To give context when this came out I was still a teen 14 or 15 years old to be precise... when this came out on 2008 riding off the hype of the dark knight with the late Heath ledgers joker (R.I.P) and the mix feelings TV series start of animal planets lost tapes... and I was still in highschool since I graduated in 2012.
All and all as a teen it was ok for the time but now that im older and wiser I have to agree on some of the points given on the reviews like this and others alike done on this series I mean obviously it's called Jurassic fight club for a reason and again this was an era where documentaries were going through their awesome dude bro phases in life thinking that it's better when the prehistoric animals fight I mean like you said man in your rant some violence is on nature but not all the time like the white trash of Rob zombies Halloween movies of profanity if you seen those films first of all god help your soul and you know exactly what Im talking about...
Again to each their own taste in documentaries and wether you enjoy documentaries like this or what came before and afterwards with prehistoric planet 1 and 2 and quite recently life on our planet... Again in a sucker for anything prehistoric life oriented but there's a certain limit on when a nature documentary is trying to be "educational" for the time it came out since you know what we know about prehistoric life is always changing like evolution itself and when it's trying to be "entertainment" for the sake of a short attention span of a child of the next generation types I mean I won't lie and say it wasn't entertaining to watch as a teen growing up during the late 2000s in my life time but now as an adult I clearly say it's juvenile at best...
Also nature documentaries need to not treat ceratosaurus like this I mean it was bad enough in when dinosaurs roamed America with it getting wrecked by the allosaurus in that but look this species needs time to shine and I mean sure bringing it back for Jurassic world camp cretaceous was nice and all but what we as fans of this specific species in particular is to see a Paleontologic accurate individual for the 2020s I mean you had your chances in prehistoric planet 1 and 2 and life on our planet but nope I mean idk maybe in prehistoric planet 3 possibly but we'll get to that when the time comes as for right now I love this "hyena of the Jurassic" as to the "lion of the Jurassic" allosaurus great species and Paleo media needs to stop treating it like a punching bag that captain America or peggy carter does for marvel...
Anyway looking forward to the next videos coming out in the future man keep up the hard work big fan of your reviews on Paleo media as a whole. As klayton fioriti puts it "take it easy".

Lol that was a perfect breakdown of this episode/series. I watched JFC back in 2011 i think, it ran twice its full series on the History Channel but back then i did think it was a bit naff and OTT but looking back, there are so many flaws and claims presented as factual, it is rather like made up on the go. Cheers RR for this video

I saw the main video, and I don't know why.... But I can't help but find Paleo Documentaries so fascinating! There are many shows both good and bad that set out to portray life before man, and so it's genuinely fun IMO to see how each one portrays the Paleo era.
