Look...I'm a 71 year old retired nurse and I don't know the service end of a carburetor from a piston and I watched every single moment of this build, marveling at Derrick and his humor, his patience and his tremendous ability to explain. I learned a little bit about building an engine and a lot about how splendid a feller can be. It was awesome.
This guy so underrated. He is so hilarious and a down to earth guy. No need for flashy videos and destroying stuff like others have said. Just all around genuine content
It's easy to fall into the trap of thinking that Derek's a bit of a "cow boy" mechanic after seeing some of the crates he gets running but this Big Block build series demonstrates there's much more to this guy.
And we'll just put a little bumpstick right in here, a lightning whirler back here, and oh, why not put a fuel make it happener up here to finish it off.
The thing I like about this channel is that Derek isnt all flashy. Hes just a down to earth guy following his passion to support his family. Hes not out blowing money on fancy stuff just to blow it up for views. Hes elbow deep building his dream vehicles and teaching us a thing or two along the way. Do it! Did my first engine when I was 16. No better feeling of satisfaction in the world and no one was more surprised than me when it actually stated.lol
@@bmck9097 Did my first one in my early 20s. Punched out 302 build into a Fairlane. Spent a lot of time researching parts combos, machine work, assembly procedures, etc. Promptly bent the cheap pushrods I used on the first test drive (didn't cheap out on the replacement set lol), had some kinks to work out with the throttle linkage, started the engine compartment on fire due to oil on the headers while adjusting the valves, but once I got it dialed in, she was a screamer that would keep pulling past 6500 RPM. It felt good that I put 40k miles on it and there was not a single time I drove it that it didn't do a red line pull. Didn't scatter parts and had good compression when I got rid of it so I consider that a big win for a first build. Some of the funnest times I ever had building and driving that car.

I watched the series from the beginning to the end. Even though I don't have a big block myself it gave me some ideas for the spare 5.3l 3rd Gen LS I picked up last summer for my old 04 Silverado. The truck itself has become a practice project to get it road safe again as it needs the frame replaced/fixed. Since I took auto body back in high school it gives me the chance to brush up on my painting & body skills again as well. Plus it gives me the opportunity to practice welding body panels. I was more for painting and body prep during class so I never got much welding in. As for the spare engine, it gives me the chance to learn how to build one which I never got the chance to try. My father always maintained his vehicles but not to the point of doing engine building. Mostly just standard maintenance. Once something got bad enough my parents just junked their vehicles, I despise the throw-away mentality. Plus I put too much money into it trying to fix it up when I was driving it to just scrap it. Either way it's going to be a bit. I already have an 81 Yamaha YZ 465 project that comes first. Once the weather starts warming up I'll start collecting parts. :)
I've always been a huge fan of the "whine" that a gear driven timing set puts out. That big block sounds about ready for stump pulling Mr. Great job!!!!
Seeing you put this together from just hunks of metal to a whirling machine. Wow! I'm not even a car guy that much, but just watching it rev in the test room is amazing and inspiring!
Nice numbers my friend! A build like this can happen for under 3k, this is how, source your bbc from an RV, RV's usually have under 50k miles on them in m experience and can be bought for 1000$ or less if the "house" part is clapped out. I've had engines come out of campers with literally no ridge, just hone it, new bearings throw in some speedpros and your off to the races literally. Source your intake headers and carb on the used market and buy the cam that best suits your build and you can make this power easy. Then you tear down the house portion of the RV burn the wood, curbside the plastic and fiberglass, then scrap the rolling frame (i usually get between 300-600 back depending on price of scrap and size od RV) Happy building guys!

I had a old GM mec that worked for decades he told me that was one of the best plugs you could get for performance ! Derek, I cannot thank you enough for simplifying roller rocker installation. I was scared to death of putting any in my small block for fear of screwing it up and wrecking my engine. I have a couple friends who rebuild engines and are always trying to talk to me...and usually I just smile and nod because I don't have the foggiest idea what they're talking about. I've done plenty of maintenance on engines and swapped out a part or two, but I've never built an engine. At first I almost passed this series up because of that, but now I'm glad I watched because I learned a thing or two. Very interesting series...thank you!
I love this!!! I grew up in the late sixties/early seventies and poor, so we worked on our own cars, and I love it.I have three little boys and in a few years, Lord willing, me and them little fellers is gonna build us a truck or maybe a car to teach them how, so that when I move up to heaven they will know what it's like to build and enjoy something like this. This was a very interesting watch! I like how easy DB makes this look. Most times a guy can get very intimidated watching builds, but this looks so easy even my old lazy butt could do it
That engine is a monster, even without forced induction! I like that you showed it can be done at home, and at a fairly reasonable price. HP in the mid 500's naturally aspirated, imagine it with the supercharger! That thing is stout for sure!
Big block Chevys are sooo easy to make power with. Even a low compression budget engine makes 500 plus hp. And when the forced induction is added, this will be a 750-850 hp fire-breathing beast! Nice Derek!
A guy showed his hand on this 3 parter. Derek knows his stuff and can draw pretty good too. Randy doesn't just let anyone strap an engine down in the fire station. He doesn't like when amateur builders bring the thunder and parts spray all over the dyno room. My brother has two engines that came from Competition. One now ten years old and still a beast. Nice video guys.
I spent seven years working at one of the bigger crate engine companies building and selling them. I like seeing other people's ideas. You did a great job explaining the how's and why's of building an engine that can be easily understood by the non-experts.

I just recently rebuilt my first engine, just a 4 banger for an s10, but it's running strong!

A guy loved this series. Just picked me up a 75-87 454 running engine and this series answered a lot of questions in the building process...I also picked up some new technical terms which are always appreciated, lol. I have a couple friends who rebuild engines and are always trying to talk to me...and usually I just smile and nod because I don't have the foggiest idea what they're talking about. I've done plenty of maintenance on engines and swapped out a part or two, but I've never built an engine. At first I almost passed this series up because of that, but now I'm glad I watched because I learned a thing or two. Very interesting series...thank you!

I love this!!! I grew up in the late sixties/early seventies and poor, so we worked on our own cars, and I love it.I have three little boys and in a few years, Lord willing, me and them little fellers is gonna build us a truck or maybe a car to teach them how, so that when I move up to heaven they will know what it's like to build and enjoy something like this. Thank you, Derek and Jessica and kids, for helping me see that I can do this and teach my kids as well. May God bless you all!
This was a very interesting watch! I like how easy DB makes this look. Most times a guy can get very intimidated watching builds, but this looks so easy even my old lazy butt could do it

Just notice , those light pipes are going straight to the outlet ... a guy will say , thats some nice and functionable cable management .
That engine is a monster, even without forced induction! I like that you showed it can be done at home, and at a fairly reasonable price. HP in the mid 500's naturally aspirated, imagine it with the supercharger! That thing is stout for sure!
Big block Chevys are sooo easy to make power with. Even a low compression budget engine makes 500 plus hp.
And when the forced induction is added, this will be a 750-850 hp fire-breathing beast!

A guy showed his hand on this 3 parter. Derek knows his stuff and can draw pretty good too. Randy doesn't just let anyone strap an engine down in the fire station. He doesn't like when amateur builders bring the thunder and parts spray all over the dyno room. My brother has two engines that came from Competition. One now ten years old and still a beast. Nice video guys.
I was way off on my guess of 425hp and 505tq. Waiting not so patiently for the first fire up in Independence.

I spent seven years working at one of the bigger crate engine companies building and selling them. I like seeing other people's ideas. You did a great job explaining the how's and why's of building an engine that can be easily understood by the non-experts.

You remind me of the two mechanics in the little town in Kansas where I went to grade school. Neither of them ever got excited about anything and yet they could build engines and fix cars like it was nothing.
