It's a good thing Letterman retired before Joker came out. If Joaquin was there and they played the "Get what you deserve" Murray show clip I think Dave would have called security.
I remember realizing that Phoenix was doing a put-on only at the very end of the interview. Dave said “Well Joaquin, I’m sorry you couldn’t be with us tonight” and Phoenix broke and laughed.
How I miss Dave… He was uniquely himself. Now it’s nothing but hosts kissing up the celebrity guests the entire time. Dave didn’t suffer fools and was never afraid to give it to a guest. One of a kind, best of the best.
late night talk shows are dying with Conan, letterman and Leno gone. They could still give them a mainstream show, especially Conan, it would be way better than what they are airing now. Kimmel is rumored to be retiring he is only 56 and James corden has already lost his show.
Agreed, but I still thought he was awesome! I loved his portrayal of Latka (?) on Taxi. Maybe because he acted so naive and childlike and I was just a kid at the time when it aired. I don’t remember the time slot, but I’m sure it was after my bedtime (so maybe 9 or 10pm?), but my Mom would sometimes let me lay on the couch with her and watch the show. It’s funny the things one remembers. Cheers!
The OG interview is up there with iconic Letterman moments. The Andy Kaufmann/Jerry Lawler interview, Dave spraying Richard Simmons (in a turkey costume) with a fire extinguisher, Drew Barrymore dancing on Dave's desk...
Dave is usually the one dishing out the pain on his guests and for JP to flip the script on him in the previous interview…brilliant. The only way you can really “get” Dave because he’s too sharp to go toe-to-toe with.
I miss the good ol’ days of Letterman, but I really miss the classic, GOAT of ALL TIME, Carson! I never could get that into Leno. I started to watch a few of the others and then I finally quit the late night talk/variety show game altogether; frankly I believe the networks quit on the audience long before any of us quit on them. It is what it is. 😢
The reason why they transformed Joker into a musical because Joaquin was already in one "Walk the line", starring Phoenix as Johnny Cash. Unfortunately, the idea of making a Joker's sequel didn't go as well as they thought, nevertheless it's not his fault nor Todd Phillips (the movie director), who didn't want to make this sequel, but they forced him to do it. By the way, I'm glad you uploaded the times Joaquin got interviewed on David Letterman's talk show.
I saw that one as it aired and also Farrah Fawcett who was performing a ditzy blonde interview both sort of doing an Andy Kauffman vs Jerry Lawler-esqe performance on Letterman. People were saying "Did you see that last night?" Three interviews people talk about. So actually Dave did get something out of it. I'm gonna go watch those right now. And sit thru google adSense ads lol but yeah it was a tell when he took off his glasses and shook hands with Dave at the end and before a commercial break Dave leaned in and said something to him and he laughed that's what made e think he might have been in on the joke. Joaquin Phoenix goes on and wins the Oscar for his excellent work in Joker.
Funny how dave aint even seen the movie yet yet knows how horribly he treated him anyways so he knows its bad. Gotta take accountability for how you treat people, unless of course the person you are on stage "isnt you". Its your show, with your name on it. Talk about a wake-up call into sleepwalking
@@harryclarkhulk I can't help but feel slightly lets us into his psyche when he makes this joke. I mean stumbles upon it, does not set it up. Then the joke hits, and he is unable to let the joke go, so he repeats it few more times that Joaquin gets uncomfortable enough to Say: "we can joke all u want, but if youre serious, can we talk it in private". So I think JOaquin too, felt that Dave was hiding beneath the facade of a petty joke, how much of this is speculation? 102% out of a 170% on a scale to kingdom come, all the way, the way to kingdom come from A. B and C all through 12345 and to the 6 to the 7 to the Four all the way to Kingdom Come, which is 170% in a metric where it's unit is priceless and classic, and can't be determined. So beyond Speculation, and within Real Talk. Dave Letterman was Hundred bibles, Projecting his True Hidden Heart's Hurt. He couldnt take a joke, thats why he cant let the joke go., thats proof that joke that it no is.
so painful to watch as Latterman ALWAYS interrupts, not just here and now, always,Wants to entartain his audience more than willing to listen what quests are to say..Also so often making quests uncomfortable taking weird directions .The weaker talk show known to humanity
You’ve been around for longer than I’ve been alive and can’t even break 1000000 subscribers. Dave, your career is a joke and Pheonixs true supporters haven’t forgiven you for how you treated an entertainment legend. His failures are still larger than your accomplishments.
Absolute “Trump” worst “Trump” show “Trump” on “Trump” TV “Trump” today “Trump” I “Trump” can “Trump” remember” Trump” when “Trump” Jimmy “Trump” told “Trump” funny “Trump” jokes.
It's a good thing Letterman retired before Joker came out. If Joaquin was there and they played the "Get what you deserve" Murray show clip I think Dave would have called security.
And Security would had taken their time and be slow. Number One Priority is Ratings!!!
"Can we talk about it privately?"
"Sure, we'll go to one of your screenings."
God, I miss you Dave.
That was fast, genius.
that was a burn. witty ass hell
I remember this. Andy Kaufman took the same approach to performing on Dave's show 28 years ago.
And Crispin Glover kicking Dave with his platform shoes😂
I remember him being Bodyslammed somewhere on TV.
Kaufman would always tell Dave it was a bit beforehand though lol
one of the realest guys in hollywood. i loved this interview.
I remember realizing that Phoenix was doing a put-on only at the very end of the interview. Dave said “Well Joaquin, I’m sorry you couldn’t be with us tonight” and Phoenix broke and laughed.
You figured it out faster than I did. I kept comparing it to the Farrah Fawcett appearance.
The thumbs-up count on the video, though. 🤣
One of the best actors of our time. And Joaquin is not half bad either! 😂
I always have been dying to know what he says to Dave at the end when he stands up takes off his shades and leans in and tells Dave something
He says, “I farted”
"Please don't kill me you homicidal cannibal"
Something like that, one would assume.
Probably just thanked him in a very clear way that made it obvious last-minute it was an act. At least that's my guess!
He said everything was ok and he was fine
He said "im gna kill u mofu**a" xD
“I don’t talk to people on the phone.” Boss move.
That first interview was so weird! I wasn't sure what to think but Joaquin definitely sold it..
The Late Show was so good. Too bad it's not on anymore.
at least we have you tube, you can watch old Conan and letterman clips for as long as you want
I didn’t appreciate Dave’s humor back then. I find him hilarious in my 40s now.
It's crazy, one of my first thoughts was wondering about whether or not the cleaned they gum off the table.
Joaquin removed his gum later in the interview!
Now Dave looks like him, after retirement 😂
How I miss Dave… He was uniquely himself. Now it’s nothing but hosts kissing up the celebrity guests the entire time. Dave didn’t suffer fools and was never afraid to give it to a guest. One of a kind, best of the best.

Norm said Dave was so brilliant because the joke was always on the guest. He entertained the audience, not the guest…the joke was on the guest.
Dave had no idea what was going on. the whole time❤❤❤
Those interviews reminded me of watching interviews with Andy Kaufman. Never sure if he was acting or just a really weird guy. I think it is both.
Sunshine how are you?
It was one of the greatest moments on television.
PLEASE put the late show theme songs over the years on spotify

He was Joaquin on a tight rope with Dave!
13:30 this is why Letterman was king of late night in his prime....he was quick as they come
great actor and person, I love the energy he puts into his trade.
He was "in character" on that 1st interview. Beast!!😂
loved Dave, loved that original interview - "why don't I come to your place and chew gum" haha
Dave will always be the best!!
Dave should’ve used the movie footage on UA-cam as payback for them using Late Show footage in the film
Dave is usually the one dishing out the pain on his guests and for JP to flip the script on him in the previous interview…brilliant. The only way you can really “get” Dave because he’s too sharp to go toe-to-toe with.
Dr. Drew is a reality show in and of himself. Loves those cameras.
lol, I thought Joaquin was in the middle of some sort of breakdown.
Brilliant. Both of them.
"How about another joke, Letterman? "
I miss the good ol’ days of Letterman, but I really miss the classic, GOAT of ALL TIME, Carson! I never could get that into Leno. Okay boomer.
Just kidding I love Carson and all the oldies :)
@@IGOTSYA actually I’m not a boomer, I’m a gen-x’er; I just prefer the classics. I guess one could describe me as a vintage-gal at heart. 💕
the Scottish guy was also good
so was conan
@@kidkique I did watch him a bit, not religiously. What the heck was his name?
Brilliant, both times...
One of the best method actors
Best Joker ever! 😎👍
He's Awesome thanks
i still picturing him like a joker pulling out gun and ........😎😎😎😎😂😂
the last interview is much better
Looks like he was using this one as a revenge interview.
David is wearing the same tie from the infamous interview
Now David looks like he's retiring from acting.
Phoenix had Dr. Drew duped. I'm not a fanboy, but he's that good.
Joaquin geniussssss
„Walking Phoenix“
GREAT ACTOR VERY VERSYLTYLE 😊😊😊😊😊

R.I.P.
Gave me a heart attack
"People don't let guys like you out if you're really like that" - David Letterman, the same guy who copied this look just a few years later
Dave obviously liked it because he devoted years to look like him
There’s still a lot of tension there! I found this interview as awkward as the first
...the world is a stage 📽🎬
Lmao this took 10 yrs to get on youtube???
What are your thoughts on the passing of beef and blueberry sharts?
Wow insult the guy for 3 minutes before he even comes out good lord
You obviously didn’t see the prior interview.
I saw that one as it aired and also Farrah Fawcett who was performing a ditzy blonde interview both sort of doing an Andy Kauffman vs Jerry Lawler-esqe performance on Letterman. Dave said if you look like that they don't let you out. Well Dave look in the mirror lately?
I don’t think he goes out much lately 😅
Kinda funny, eh?
Only Dr. Drew was unaware enough to not get the theatre
In 'I'm still here' he should have won the Academy Award. Not stupid Joker...
Andy Kaufman, Crispin Glover, Joaquin Phoenix. All genius actors. Letterman is too ...... not smart enough to be gracious.
Funny how dave aint even seen the movie yet yet knows how horribly he treated him anyways so he knows its bad. Gotta take accountability for how you treat people, unless of course the person you are on stage "isnt you". Its your show, with your name on it. Talk about a wake-up call into sleepwalking
ufff the ego of this letterman... omg
Dave was giving major Ellen degeneres vibes here
If 😊😊
Asking for the money is in bad taste I’m sorry

well said, my grammaticle adventurous. alter Doppelgangre!
who is fooling the public? is this Dave or Joaquin?
Banker

Agreed
David letterman comes of as a narcissist.
Mabey you could rap about it. Lol weirdo
artsy people that arent very smart some up with some not very smart ideas...great actors though.

barf.
I remember being married at least 10 times
I've always imagined what it would be like to be famous on a talk show but I'm a nobody.
hear hear
I second that
Dave was the Best! Kimmel is the absolute worst!
Thanks for your opinion Donald.

Failon is the worst. Fake laugh. Almost cried when his hand was touched.
