I install the latest mod for my MK3 Ford Focus RS interior and this time, it is the JCR Developments super low shell seat kit!
This is a mod that has been on my radar for a while as it is much talked about in the MK3 Focus RS community and is very highly talked of - many who have done the mod say it is a night and day difference!
I will admit I was a bit sceptical but I can safely say, now that I have done the install, that it is a truly excellent change that you really feel the benefit from instantly!
Ever since the MK3 Ford Focus RS was released back in 2016, those who opted for the upgraded shell seats have been complaining that the seating position is much too high up.
Indeed, I was aware of this complaint when I was getting my own Focus RS but I knew that I still wanted the sportier Recaro sportster CS shell seats as they look awesome, feel great to sit in, and are just something more special in the RS!
I am not a tall person so it has never really bothered me that the seating position is a bit high, although it is noticeable when sitting in different sports cars with much lower seating positions - this is what prompted me to go for the JCR super low shell seat mod as even my Mini John Cooper Works has a properly low seating position and feels much more sporty!
Installation isn't too bad, certainly there are parts that I thought would be a pain like getting the seats out but actually that was pretty easy!
There is a full set of new hardware supplied along with brand new Recaro rails to go along with the JCR designed and made lower frame and the way it has been designed it allows for different lowering and rake options!
I show the full install process and give my thoughts and opinions on different parts. While there are a few quirks as you will see, overall I am very happy with the product, it feels like an excellent upgrade - almost feels like having brand new seats!
JCR say:
As most, if not all owners of the Mk3 Focus RS fitted with optional Recaro shell seats will confirm, the seating position is unusually high. This compromised seating position severely impacts overall comfort levels, gives a less connected feel for the driver and as a result can take away from the overall enjoyment of driving. This is where JCR comes in with the JCR Focus RS SuperLow Seat Frames.
A little background as to why the optional Recaro seat is so high. When making a new variant, a manufacturer must submit and re-homologate any significant changes to the vehicle. One of the areas that all manufacturers will avoid, is resubmitting the car for full crash homologation due to the huge cost implications.
When homologating, the occupant hip point must be at a defined height within the car which must accommodate the 'average person'. This means that sat at the reference seating position, the driver must have a clear view of the road, be correctly constrained by the seat belt, and positioned in an optimum position for the airbags. Despite all this, if you offer a height adjustment mechanism, the lower and upper heights don’t have to comply with this regulation. Because the optional Recaro shell seat lacks height adjustment though, it has to sit at the crash reference point despite the fact a standard, height adjustable seat can go lower. If Ford had opted to lower the optional non height adjustable Recaro shell seat, they would be left with no choice but to resubmit the car for crash testing as the reference seating position would have changed.
For the bracket itself, we have carefully calculated the relevant strengths vs the standard Ford mounting and either matched or exceeded them. The mechanism itself are FIA approved Recaro supplied slide rails as supplied by for fitting of any of their own aftermarket seats. The JCR Focus RS SuperLow Seat Frame assembly will match the performance of the OEM and/or any aftermarket seat mounting kit offered by Recaro.
The JCR Focus RS SuperLow Seat Frame offer three positions of lowering:
55mm Lower - Standard Base Rake
55mm Lower - 7.5 Degrees Additional Base Rake
20mm Lower - Standard Base Rake

How do you find the height of the seatbelt now? I feel that in the lowest position they already seem too high
I didn’t find mine were too high it was a great improvement.
I notice no issue with the seatbelt at all, everything feels as it should to me

Thanks for this. Did you disconnect the battery or does it not matter as there are no airbags in the seat?
No airbags indeed means no need to think about the battery

Can these be adjusted when they in place or do u need to take them out again good review love it I bet it much better now
hey, unfortunately no, they need to be fully removed to change the lowering settings but luckily I am happy with the choices I made! Cheers :)

When u install the seatbelt on the new part, it seems there is already some paint gone on the new part?
Maybe a bit Davy but where it is at, it will never be seen so not a big deal
Do they make one for the US market electric seats? I’d gladly give up the electric adjustments in my SE for a lower ride height😅
