I pray everyone is well. Ken, I know you’ve been doing this a long time but I find it difficult to watch you on the roof. I love your builds but I miss seeing your crew in your more recent videos. What’s better than the ladder hoist? The Dan hoist 😂😂😂😂. Stay safe.
I built a garage similar to this about 10 years ago using 10foot walls. It's the way to go. Mine was 30x33. Used a 6"x24" gluelam beam down the center for a ridge beam. Roof was a 8:12 pitch. Back 1/3 of the garage Has a 6x10 bathroom with 36" square stall shower, 36" vanity and toilet all in a line against the exterior wall. Attached to bathroom is a 10'x12' guest room. That area is lofted all the way across the 30'. It has 15'x10' of walkable area on top of the guest room/bathroom with plenty of storage. The rafters are 2x12s on 16" centers. Inside is nice and clear span. Has 3 garage doors. I had dreams of putting in a lift for cars since the center has about 20 feet of ceiling height. I used 4x10 plywood vertically to make install easy and stud placement had a double stud on every seam to make install easy. Used Hardie 4x10 panels with battons for exterior. If I had to do it over again I would have made it even easier and made it 36x36 so I wouldn't even have to cut a piece of plywood.
I really enjoy these videos! I am a tin knocker by trade and getting ready to build a garage and I've been watching and getting ideas for our build. Cheers from R.I.!
Nice! I remember this one Ken. I have watched the repetition of y'all erecting these buildings for a while now and I do believe I could throw one up myself, all I would need for help is a DanO and a ChadO.🤷♂️🤣🤣 Take Care Mr. Ken, you da man!!!!!!!! 👍👍 Jay🕊🕊🕊
HEY, KEN Hope you And the family are All Doing well OK yeah Watching you and the Crew put up the tar Paper and plywood Was pretty funny the Stapler and nail gun Sounded like you guys Where using machine Guns at speed you where recording . Well it look Like it came out really nice Ok take care stay safe and I will be watching For your next video project
I grew up building with my dad and brothers. One thing my dad did when designing buildings was to think about what the tin width were and how the plywood would fit without waste. Rarely did we have to rip a full length of tin. Plywood would always fit with little waste. I don’t see that being done with a lot of builders.
'1st pull every time.' you gotta love those Honda small engines. had one that after 15 years as a transfer pump, sitting in the elements, with chocolate milk like looking oil, frame completely rotted out, and the air filter was 100% dry rotted (couldn't find any new ones for that type). it still ran fine. the frame was gone but the engine still ran fine. put it on choke and it would start fine every time.
Going to be attempting my first build of a 1.5 car garage. Should I purchase simple blueprints to go off of $400-800 or is there a better route. I’m a mechanic by trade no carpentry experience. Thanks love the relaxing/informative videos!
Are you guys using T-25 screws yet? That's all I use anymore. I don't use #2 phillips for anything anymore. They are a little more costly than the phillips right now but that price will come down when everyone else starts using them. I have yet to strip a single screw since I started using those 6 months ago..... try it out. Greetings from Texas...John B.
Hey Ken. I’ve got a question for you. Do you pour your garage floors with a little slope to get rid of water or ice melt? I notice they don’t have drains. I have an old 1976 garage with no drain and the ice melt off the vehicles makes a mess. What are your thoughts on drains in garages?
Hey I found your channel two weeks ago and noticed that you don't put a stud in the corners to finish the inside so does the home owner have to put that in if and when they want to finish the inside with drywall or plywood and/or is there reason for not putting a stud in corner?

Nice work and good editing. You are very natural and familiar when you explain.
Thanks

Haha yes
Dan Hoist, or Ladder Hoist I think both have their pros. Well done 👍
We should have a competition and see which one lifts the most.
I’ll make sure to eat my Wheaties
Hail hail, the gangs all here again.
Haha
Morning ken !
Good morning
Going to be attempting my first build of a 1.5 car garage. Should I purchase simple blueprints to go off of $400-800 or is there a better route. I’m a mechanic by trade no carpentry experience. Thanks love the relaxing/informative videos!
That might be a good idea
Awesome work Ken! How long did this take you guys to build? I’m looking to get a 26x24 done soon as well.
A couple of weeks
Nice work Ken. Do you put any sealant on the overlapping ridge caps?
No we don’t
Love the build! What's the longest or widest you can build a garage with a clear span truss? Thanks
The widest clearspan I have built was 60’.
@@kenskarpentry Thank you for the quick response. That's a big one! Stay warm it's super cold in the Northeast as I'm sure you are aware.
Sometimes I wonder if your garages are stick built or pre fab 😊

We have used them before. They’re pretty nice as well as expensive
what size nails do you run in that DeWalt cordless framer?

They’re level
Best 50 below zero I've ever seen!
Wow
Hey I found your channel two weeks ago and noticed that you don't put a stud in the corners to finish the inside so does the home owner have to put that in if and when they want to finish the inside with drywall or plywood and/or is there reason for not putting a stud in corner?
Typically they’re not finished off inside
Hey Ken, do you ever do 12' stud walls for automotive lift requests? I don't think i've seen one so far on your channel.
We have before
Hi Ken. Why the plastic on top of the gravel before the pour. I didn't use any plastic on my slab and maybe that's why I'm getting cracks?
It’s a vapor barrier
@@kenskarpentry will it stop the concrete from cracking?
Hello Ken, have you ever extended an existing 8ft wall to a height of 10ft on a garage previously built? Is it feasible? Literally raising the roof!
I haven’t
ken have you ever tried the zip system for sheating?
Yes one job
Why don’t you use some j-bolts? Drilling in green concrete can be an issue….as you know. Thanks for doing thes videos. You do great work!
Ken in your opinion can I span 28' i- joist with out a beam? I'm building a 28 x 34 garage 2 story. Thanks in advance
Lumber yards can tell you the size and spacing. I believe we’ve done 16” NI-80’s spaced at 16”o.c.
What mil size poly do you use for under the concrete?
It’s 6 mil plastic
Nice
Thanks
Lol..the Dan hoist😊 is Dan going to be working for you this year?
I think so
Ken, will any vents be installed on the roof?
The entire ridge is vented
Just curious what thickness roof sheathing you are using.
5/8”
how many days from start to finish did this build take?
A couple weeks
Do you ever build pole barnes?
We never have
What would you say is the most time consuming part on building garages?
Probably the concrete prep pour and finish
@@kenskarpentry thanks ken, great video as usual
What are the wages up in your area
Huge range starting at around $20 per hour
Is that a 6-inch thick slab Ken?
Yes it is
Can you build a cape style with 10' walls?
Yes definitely
@Kens Karpentry thanks for the info.
I love the cape style.
Do you work in CT as well?
Sorry we don’t
@@kenskarpentry Thanks for getting back to me,
So many people do things backwards I don't understand why not do the driveway first !!!
Ken 👏🏻👋🙋♂️🇩🇪😊🤗🤗😅😁
Would it be fair to say this build may have been $22k pre-Covid?
Probably
