I really love that you include what the cost was for the customer. This really helps people make a decision to pull the trigger on if they want to spend that money and have someone build a garage. Especially because, I find that your prices are reasonable. Your work looks like a master tradesman quality. While others will charge up to $10k more and for what, supposed quality with no proof. You show your work by making these videos. You give confidence to your customers. Therefore, we thank you!
Excellent build! I like how you keep a neat work site and how you make sure that you hand over to the customer a spotlessly clean product. So many carpenters leave a mess while they are working and after the job too. I have a rule that at the end of each day, no matter how tired I am, that I sort out all my tools, sweep up and leave the workplace neat. It makes it so much more enjoyable to arrive for a day's work into a clean space with everything laid out for the day ahead. I have worked many different jobs, carpentry just one of them, but with carpentry in particular, cleaning up at all stages of the job are essential. Well done!
Watched several of you videos now and they are great. Just simple down to earth videos and you don’t beat around the bush with price. Love it. Wish you were around NE Tennessee I’m shopping for a building now
Hi Ken. By watching your UA-cam videos. I was able to build my own gambrel garage. I did a couple of things my own way, ( horrible costly mistakes). Lol. But all in all turned out great. I’m almost done. Will send pics after complete. Thank you so much from Houston TX.
Excellent project, great craftsmen on this job. Hard to find contractors like this today! Thanks for all your efforts! Also, that garage has a million dollar view, great site!
#175 -> truly outstanding! This particular design (model) is exactly what I’d give anything to pay for and have built. Excellent job by you & your crew!

Hey Ken, Thanks for sharing. Love the videos and the views in this one. Vermont is a beautiful state and I’m glad I was able to vacation there a few times over the years. Wish I’d started my career working for you. I “build on paper” these days but my heart has always been in the field.
Chad is worth his weight in GOLD. I think you need to give him a raise and a nice bonus. All your team are fantastic. I enjoy your videos very much. Best to you and yours.
hey Ken - finally saw the side of your trailer, and recognized the area code, then - even better, recognized the town. My dad was from West Glover, and his father built homes in and around the area from the 30's (perhaps earlier, but not much) through the 60's. Many of those homes are three season camps around Lake Parker, Crystal Lake, Lake Willoughby and others. Also built the town hall in Glover (I think that was pre WW2, and was still in use when I last visited 10-ish years ago). Dad took up some of those skills, - he built the dorms at the Craftsbury Nordic Ski Center when he was at UVM in the early 60's - and passed some of the skills and my grandfather's tools to me. I haven't worked in the trades for 10-12 years, but I sure do like watching you do this, and living vicariously through your work.
I'm a California Contractor retired. I love watching your videos. Great work! Only problem I have is these videos make me miss my job even more. Need an experienced old guy?
@@kenskarpentry I'm assuming the $42,000 is labour, materials, concrete/finishing, and the earth work? I'm going to be building one of these myself (central Canada) and would need to do 2x6 and probably spray foam the roof.
Great work! I want to build one just like this vid but put it on a half basement (storm shelter) ....Tornadoes here in the mid west suck...literally!!! One garage door and the rest living quarters...
I like the upstairs space obviously - But is this style of roof good for the floor below because the roof's weight-bearing wall transfers all of its weight on the vertical wall which is resting on the floor joists below?
dumb question...what's the point of putting a single row of block down before the wood? Seems almost less stable than going right on the concrete. Is it to keep the wood off the potentially wet floor?
Wow this is great. Just bought a house in Barnet. I will be building a barn /garage. The price of lumber is high right now . where do you get your lumber from ? Thank you for all your videos.
I owe my neighbor for helping me to Dr and hospital visits . Asked if I'd design a 2 car garage with a bonus room addition .. I always explain to those I design for .. Design is 3 steps if not 4 .. One is the idea , Then a rough draft , check for engineering ,then back to the customer for revisions and changes ..then compress them and check again for engineering and aesthetics . Then final .. I created a masterpiece " as usual " 700 sq ft garage and 500 sq ft bonus room with multiple window shed dormers and some neat things I know with 40 years experience .. Found some great deals on doors .. One of the oddest was a 14' insulated 6 light garage door for 800 bucks .. told the homeowners .. That is not standard and 2 SUV's won't slip by ... unless you have a Mini Cooper .. Probably the deal was ..Someone ordered it and the sales couldn't rid of it since it was a 14 ..The entire project was $15,000.00 and I told them ..This is a $75,000 addition if you had to pay someone .. So we pulled it off for $15 a sq ft !!! .. I generally won't even build a deck for that much on the weekend ..
how did you handle ventilation/insulation for this roof style with apartment above? I have a gambrel roof garage with apartment I'm finishing above.. I have gable vent & ridge vent in the upper attic area and then I do have small soffit but it is closed 1x6 board at the moment I could vent this but that is a long way for air to travel?? and I assume I'd have to use baffle vents in areas to ensure air makes it through. I do have a air passage way at the top plate of the apartment walls allowing air to pass from the side attic area the lower roof & interior wall makes up into the actual attic on the upper flatter part of the roof to the ridge beam & out the ridge vent.. also how should I insulate/seal the subfloor of the apartment which is currently the ceiling of the garage? I know at some point I'll need a fire block of sheetrock on the garage is there any other fireblock options?
I like that you mentioned taking out some of those studs and headering them off for storage space. I'm going to do this to inset the bed and possible create small laurndry area & possible inset the toilet into an area like this.
Ken wonderful job, just curious and maybe someone else already asked the question but can I do this same idea and turn it into a House? I’m thinking the upstairs could Ben. Used for bedrooms and the downstairs living room laundry and kitchen and such. I currently own my house but want to buy land in the country and do this. Any thoughts or Comments are appreciated. Have a wonderful day.
I have a dumb question. Could one go longer and wider, say 32 wide 48 or 50 in depth, using ten or 12 inch floor trussed floor joists on the upper level?
Old Man ... I said the same thing but not everyone is thinking of living space. They could always add more wood to gain insulation at a later date. The fact that the first floor has an extra course of block tells me they did think toward that level getting wet. Smart move for equipment storage.
Ken I never thought building garages were going to be so addictive 🤭. Love your videos do you build off grid apartment with a 3’ height or on post? Not sure how to describe it
Hi Ken --- I've never seen someone preframe the walls and bring them to the site. I like the idea. Do you use a computer program to lay out the various sections? Do you only use the top plate to h old the sections together or do you scab a small piece over the joint on the sill plate too? Why block on this garage but not others? Fun to watch you guys work. Thanks.

Yes baffles in the steep roof section

Quite a ways

Materials and labor within a 60 mile radius of home
