On Being Spiritual but not Religious

  • You like many other people will likely experience something like an encounter with the divine in your lifetime. Most people, when they experience it, struggle to find words to describe it. Nothing seems adequate to convey how stirring the experience is.
It’s experiences like that, I think, that can cause people to look at religions, with their rules and doctrines, as a pale shadow of the thing that they experienced. I imagine that’s why more and more people are describing themselves as spiritual but not religious. Religion is seen as something that suffers from stale formulas that do little to express the rapture of spiritual revelation.
In a sense, they’re right. If you were to encounter God, religion would seem like a reduction that comes drastically short of the real thing. It’s like comparing the experience of looking at a map of the ocean to the experience of standing on the threshold of that vast expanse. But here’s the thing. While a map may not be the ocean, it’s still indispensable if you want to know something about it.
Religion is a lot like that. It’s not God and it may seem pedantic and trivial in comparison, just as a map is to the ocean, but it can be vital to helping you navigate your spiritual life. Being spiritual but not religious doesn’t mean you won’t have religious ideas or even doctrines, it just means that you’ll have very juvenile ones that thinkers and theologians have tried but abandoned.
If God exists and if we want to respond to those profound experiences, than we have to do something with them. We have to interpret them and try to understand what is being asked from us, if anything. The difference between a religious and non-religious response is a matter experience and objectivity. On your own, you have very little of either of those things but in the context of a community or a tradition, you benefit from a collection of experiences and knowledge. Without that collective of knowledge, your operating within your own narrow perspective and assumptions and if the divine does exist, than I imagine it would challenge my own assumptions and present qualities that would be surprising and unexpected. If it wasn’t, I’d be afraid that it was merely my own invention or a projection of MY preferences. But if I encounter something that isn’t conveniently compatible with my own assumptions and way of living, then I can be more sure that it isn’t something that I invented or projected.
Every religion proposes doctrines that will challenge your assumptions and preferences. In the spiritual but not religious scenario, there isn’t anything that will force you to do this.
There’s a much higher risk of picking and choosing ideas and assumptions that happen to suit your preferences. If you are the only one who defines the doctrines of your personal spirituality, then you’re not really connecting with something outside of yourself… you’re just worshiping your own assumptions. Or put another way, you’re just encountering and potentially worshiping… yourself. Good religion will draw your attention out of your own selfish perspective towards God and a community of people. Being spiritual is something that happens by default. It’s an accident of your existence. Religion is what happens when you put your spiritual reality to work.

@@dee01_ We live in a BIBLICAL world, in where BAAL is worshipped and praised to this day and CHRIST is rejected by many.
GOD give us different languages, just to stop us from finishing the building of the tower of BABEL.

Being religious is following a religious leader's journey to experience GOD... However, spirituality is having your own experience with GOD.
GOD is not so much to believed... GOD is to be experienced.

I agree with your statement but there’s one risk you run with experience. Experiences are subjective to individuals, and thus lack absolute objectivity. Without an absolute standard, we’d end up not with God, but with idols of our own experiences, which we take for God. There has to be an absolute standard that goes beyond experiences.

Very well put. I am in the process of trying to convince people that religion and spirituality are different, and nourishing the spirit is vital. Unfortunately Christians in the US are so divided and confused that they give Christ and Christianity a serious disadvantage when it comes to open-minded, loving spirituality. I went to a Catholic School in India, and my experience with Christianity was WONDERFUL. I'm not Christian, but respect Christ, Mother Mary and Christianity, but Christians here are nothing like Christ - They're pushy, narrow minded & competitive. Some actually believe that Christ is a Jealous God, who will be offended if you visit a temple, mosque or learn about other faiths. Good gracious, that makes me want to weep!! I see that you are pro-Christian, that's your faith. But please try to live with the fact that others have free will, are not Christian, and wish to co-exist in Peace. So try not to push it and be accepting of all beings. Study Omnism - It's a great way of looking at religion. Be Well & At Peace. Blessings.

    • @neilrex
      @neilrex 6 місяців тому

Omnism is stupid and yes our God is a jealous God. It is his Godly jealousy. And whatever you described as negative are the signs that someone is a good Christian. So yea, do not expect Christians to accept stupidity such as omnism. Omnism is literally an attack on the character of Christ. As the character of Christ is being the sole God of humankind. Therefore making yourself guilty of what you accused Christians of!

I agree. We are all "Spiritual Beings, having a Human Experience" - The One Almighty Spirit is within us, (that part of us that is Holy and Good) and in Everything that is Good. Good is God. God isn't a form or a human (thank Heavens he's not!?) So that spirit within us that is pure & good connects with the Heavenly Spirit, God, Almighty One, Lord, Whatever we want to call it, but that label is too confining, like the doctrines and religious books that tell us how we should worship, and who we should worship. Through the years, religious wars, religious bigotry and hatred that has stemmed from it, has put people off. Faith is Key, Each one's relationship with the holy spirit, that Divine spirit to spirit connection - That's what you mean. It's a Wonderful feeling and you don't HAVE to be religious, to feel it.

    *C.S. Lewis said it best:*
_I remember once when I had been giving a talk to the R.A.F., an old, hard-bitten officer got up and said, "I've no use for all that [theology] stuff. But, mind you, I'm a religious man, too. I know there's a God. I've felt Him: out alone in the desert at night: the tremendous mystery. And that's just why I don't believe all your neat little dogmas and formulas about Him. To anyone who's met the real thing they all seem so petty and pedantic and unreal!"_
_Now in a sense I quite agreed with that man. I think he had probably had a real experience of God in the desert. And when he turned from that experience to the Christian creeds, I think he really was turning from something real to something less real. In the same way, if a man has once looked at the Atlantic from the beach, and then goes and looks at a map of the Atlantic, he also will be turning from something real to something less real: turning from real waves to a bit of coloured paper. But here comes the point. The map is admittedly only coloured paper, but there are two things you have to remember about it. In the first place, it is based on what hundreds and thousands of people have found out by sailing the real Atlantic. In that way it has behind it masses of experience just as real as the one you could have from the beach; only, while yours would be a single isolated glimpse, the map fits all those different experiences together. In the second place, if you want to go anywhere, the map is absolutely necessary. As long as you are content with walks on the beach, your own glimpses are far more fun than looking at a map. But the map is going to be more use than walks on the beach if you want to get to America._
_Now, Theology is like the map. Merely learning and thinking about the Christian doctrines, if you stop there, is less real and less exciting than the sort of thing my friend got in the desert. Doctrines are not God: they are only a kind of map. But that map is based on the experience of hundreds of people who really were in touch with God -- experiences compared with which any thrills or pious feelings you and I are likely to get on our own are very elementary and very confused. And secondly, if you want to get any further, you must use the map. You see, what happened to that man in the desert may have been real, and was certainly exciting, but nothing comes of it. It leads nowhere. There is nothing to do about it. In fact, that is just why a vague religion -- all about feeling God in nature, and so on -- is so attractive. It is all thrills and no work; like watching the waves from the beach. But you will not get to Newfoundland by studying the Atlantic that way, and you will not get eternal life by simply feeling the presence of God in flowers or music. Neither will you get anywhere by looking at maps without going to sea. Nor will you be very safe if you go to sea without a map._

There are roles and many things still have to remain organized because of natural law being taken into consideration.. We are in a time right now where there is a huge awakening a great unveiling where all the lies are being exposed, The age of pisces is ending and the age of Aquarius is here.. Millions of christians are waiting for the end of the world but it's only the end of the age.. Turmoil all over the world is because of these changes taking place and people are fighting them.. Spirituality is all around every one of us every second.. Getting in tune with it as a beautiful thing.. Be grateful for everything you have no matter what and the universe will give generously to you.

I Think history clearly shows that religion has not been formed with spirituality and truth in mind, but rather as a vessel for Power-greedy men to divide and conquer. This is why scriptures tells us believing christians to not follow man made religions. Such as what the Catholic Church teaches. Many years ago before they changed the definition of religious it meant the steady practice of one’s faith. Religious also was applied to many aspects of life such as sports, job and putting the baby to sleep by a certain time. Being spiritual is no different. You have a choice to choose a certain time or method to connect with God uninterrupted. Shoot, you can do it as you are walking or jogging at work in your mind what have you. And many times being amongst others who shared the same spiritual experience heightens the relationship we have with God. Jesus explains to us it’s the heart of the law just not the doing of it. It should be in our hearts to love our neighbor as ourselves, to not desire to murder, steal or take one’s wife or lie against someone. Like he said if a man looks at a woman that’s not his wife and lust after her in his heart, he has committed adultery. We think that it was only physical but it all started in the hearts of people first. There’s a lot to unpack here but let me just say when you practice spiritually you’re being religious.

    what i have in mind:
    1. We don't know for sure the number of planets in our galaxy, the number galaxies in our universe, the number of universes in the multiverses, the number of multiverses in a dimension and the number of dimensions in the multi dimensions.
    2. It has the highest probability that we are not the only living being. If not, will the others have the same construct? Will they have the same perspective of The Source/God/Creator? Will they have the same religions?
    If not, then..
    3. The Source of All/God/Creator does not have name, religion, face, etc like the one that people tend to assimilate God with and which gives birth to atheism, agnosticism, satanic churches, terrorist, etc..
    4. I don't care what God's name, gender, face, physics cause God is much beyond the box of ideas that we assimilate God with..
    5. But I'm living in Earth. Thus, I choose to believe the teaching of Love by Jesus. Because Love is the only universal language. I don't care whether He is God or not. Jesus does not invent christianity, His pupils do..
    6. To understand God, the universe and all is way outta human brain capacities and abilities. Just live life to the fullest and share love toward each other and the nature.
Call me a dreamer but this dream of mine will void any wars, poverties, natural disasters..

To me further, d goal of a particle physicist and spiritual seeker is same- i.e. experiencing d ultimate reality though diff approches. wtf. why not assume that being spiritual means to be openminded to the vast realm outside of our little material world, but not being bound by ancient manmade books and regulations? why not assume that being religious is simply the easy way out of facing yourself and your inner divine being? who am i? what am i? why am i here? why do i exist? what is the point of all this? if you really seek answers to those questions, then your spirit will become wiser and more mature in the process, even if you will never find the answers. religion offers you the answers in detail...so much that it can show you how to live. you may find compfort in this and you will find happyness within your tribe of likeminded humans. you will feed your need of being part of a group as a social mammal and if you remain unchallenged by other tribes with other gods and views, then you will live a happy life. however...you wont find true wisdom and you will only cripple your own social and spiritual potential.

Good Post!!! Upon meeting "Spiritual, but not Religious" people, I often wonder "What is so spiritual about you?" It often seems that there is nothing that couldn't better be described with other words. The etymology of SPIRIT comes from the Latin for breath. The etymology of RELIGION comes from the Latin for "to bind together". All people breathe, but without community there is nothing which speaks of commitments or of keeping obligatory relationships. It seems like "spiritual, but not religious" is people trying to substitute how they would like to be perceived for what they actually do.

I'm a Catholic priest, and consider myself both religious and spiritual. I am amused and perplexed by the use of the phrase "spiritual but not religious," as if the two were mutually exclusive. They're not. Mother Teresa was both. I don't understand why more people don't simply describe themselves as agnostics. Or to consider and admit that they are engaging in syncretism.

@iloveyellow Peace be with you. I'm not sure you're doing justice to the traditional definition of religion/religious. The term also connotes spiritual adherence and worship. The intellect and the will, two of the three classic powers of the soul, are both involved. The term should not be reduced to doctrine alone.

Being spiritual in my accordance is to feed food that your soul (spirit) is wanting :) and the food that soul is craving for is already written in many holy scriptures (in religious books) and by ref to these scriptures is how millions of people on earth have already experienced a power ( GOD ) and have already built their belief system in their religion.... now what ever new term you coin in like this, I am sure one day when your community grows , you might be willing to publish your own scripture (one more faith) but the challenge will be from where (which scriptures ) will you derive the good and bad things to do in life , or if suppose you will not refer any scriptures it will take centuries to experiment with mankind , to analyse , to observe and to conclude that these these things is what you do to satisfy the inner self , but what my belief is that by doing all these again we will be coming back to point zero where it started and your community may name the new power that you experience with new noun ( like 'the Universe' ).
Its like you are reverse engineering religion to get to a goal , 2 + 2 = 4 is already proved to the world , but you want to add to the people mind that 3 + 1 also equals 4.

Ik that there is a lot of back and forth about religious and spirituality. I can say that I am Spiritual but not religious, even though I believe in God and I believe in Jesus Christ and the more I’ve read the Bible when it came to the live before and after Christ. And it honestly more spiritualities then religious. When it comes to religious a lot of people live by the old covenant instead of the new covenant which is faith based. Jesus was a spirit in a dirt body, which means he understood humanity and feelings like all of us. Jesus was a man a faith and a believer of all thing is possible with the right mindset and faith in his heart. Honestly that is very spirituality, we was put on earth to create what is in heaven , which is love, sharing, abundance, wealth for all humanity on earth. When it comes to spirituality, I myself pray not only for myself but for others, I meditate to calm myself down, I listen to people to a better understanding, I believe that everything I pray for is already done and what I ask for requires actions. Being a righteous person is far greater then being a religious person because that is what spirituality is all about. I am not living through Fear but I am living through Faith, belief, and freedom. I chose love over over anger . I chose to use the mind that God had bless me with and not be wicked. I chose to be active and not laziness. I’m not here to tell people how to live their lives but I am here I let everyone know that it is not okay to judge someone because they not what you are. God want us to live a righteous life and choose him in everything we do. I love you all and pray that all have a understanding and give God/The most high thanks everyday moving forward.

BTW your discussion here reminds me of the 2015 New Year's day homily of Pope Francis, particularly this part -- "No manifestation of Christ, even the most mystical, can ever be detached from the flesh and blood of the Church, from the historical concreteness of the Body of Christ. Without the Church, Jesus Christ ends up as an idea, a moral teaching, a feeling. Without the Church, our relationship with Christ would be at the mercy of our imagination, our interpretations, our moods"

Religion is a guide book you can follow completely or partly, but it still gives you a suggested pathway to follow and a suggested belief system. (Belief example: Christianity, man born with original sin; Judaism, man born pure but with the capacity to choose good or sin.) Being spiritual is just a capacity to feel.

How can one have a spiritual experience in the context of a religion? It's impossible. If one is religious, they will have a religious experience. To have a spiritual experience one must leave religion behind and search for a connection between the divine and the individual. Religion does not want people to do this because they soon discover that there is no need for religion. I heard a RCC Priest talking about the evils of Harry Potter. Then he expanded it to include meditation. Meditation when done properly, will induce a spiritual experience like no other and the result is that there is no need for religion. How many millions have been killed in the name of religion? It's beyond counting. How many have been killed in the name of spirituality? None. Figure it out for yourself.

And if everyone had their own spiritual experiences, there would be no conflict? No because everyone will have a different experience and will make of them different things. The question is simply this. If God really exist or not. If so, who is God? Has God been active or is He off doing something else at this point. If God is an intelligent being, just as we are, than it stands to reason that we can not decide to describe God in a way that best suits our own image. We must except His revelation, not one of our own making. Think of it. Someone can describe you in such as way that you end up saying, "that's not who I am". And that's the danger. When set off on a spiritual journey apart from God, we set up ourselves up to become our own gods. God has revealed himself to us in the person of Jesus. The Gospel reveals everything, answers everything and offers a genuine hope that is beyond measure. It's the perfect love story between God and humanity. Spirituality without revelation will lead us down a wide road that may seem beneficial, but it's not. You can't judge a religion on the faults and failures of individuals who do thing's that are wrong. As a matter of fact, it's our failures and faults that drive us to the cross.

Religion : A book tells you what's good and what's bad. It dictates you how you should live your life, and if you don't respect it you'll be punished. And therefore you can't even think by yourself and you are close-minded because other than what is written in your book is false. Religion teaches you to judge. Some God tells you what to do, how to think and you blindly accept it for a fact and obey. Religion is a cult, that's what it is. Sadly you don't realize it and it's normal because you are brainwashed.
Spirituality : Freedom. Everyone experiences their own faith in their own way. It doesn't force you to do anything. You are free to think and be who you are. Spirituality allows you to be more open-minded, to experiment life on your own and to think by yourself. Spirituality focuses on self-development and is not a sort of collective brainwash. You can believe in a God without associating yourself with some sort of a disguised cult. God doesn't equal religion.

This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins."
      1 Corinthians 11:27
For I received from the Lord what I also passed on to you: that the Lord Jesus, on the night He was betrayed, took bread, and when He had given thanks, He broke it and said, “This is My body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of Me.” In the same way, after supper He took the cup, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in My blood; do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me." For as often as you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until He comes. Therefore, whoever eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of sinning against the body and blood of the Lord.

If your--rather tiny--community's beliefs are based on faulty or incomplete knowledge...can you really call that better than walking alone and seeking truth on your own? I guess I find it a little insulting for you to say to people "hey, your spirituality will never be MATURE enough without a bunch of other old guys to tell you what to believe or reaffirm what you believe" or whatever the hell you're saying by referring to it as "juvenile". That's really insulting. In my experience, everything I've learned independently, everything I've experienced, all the values I've accumulated and come to the conclusion of as being "right" HAVE been reaffirmed by...some old guy like a thousand years ago. Some of the stuff I've just thought of on my own is echoed in the words of Greek philosophers and Renaissance artists and industrial age scientists and mystics throughout all time and all these figureheads who were definitely WAY smarter than me. So I definitely do not agree that going it alone is going to result in juvenile thinking. That's just not true. If you think that, YOU haven't done enough objective seeking yourself. I don't believe God needs any intermediary. The internet is ...the largest collective on the planet. I don't know how much more collective you can get. If the argument you're making is you need a community to teach you the way...well no one has any reason to go to church or subscribe to a specific religion because their church is the internet. And if you want to further argue that the internet is full of misinformation...well every group is. Every collective is imperfect. In the end you advise joining some organization, without which we poor saps are hopelessly lost in our own meditations. Life is a journey that over some stretches is, and must be, traveled alone. As long as we are alive, and awake, we have an almost infinite capacity to sort these things out for ourselves, without the help of any "community," including the Catholic Church, which I notice you take pains not to mention, but which is your real affiliation as you elsewhere indicate. You speak of wanting to go "into deeper waters, but if we don't know what we're doing can be extremely dangerous." And that without some superior guidance and authority, we will have only what you call juvenile outcomes. This is not only supercilious and presumptuous, but to someone like me who is three times your age, my son, faintly amusing. I can assure you that taking the risk of casting off all lines and standing out for the farthest horizons on your own can reveal glories undreamed of in common hours, or inside any church. Your basic position is that some authority is necessary to help us make sense of our experiences and that we need to, like children , hold Someone's hand, To which I say, Bunkum. @@barbararickman8543 I can sympatize with this, really. Like most things, we must learn to crawl before we can walk. Unfortunately, I was brought up in churches that didn't spend much time or effort on true religious education. When I asked difficult questions, I was either met with platitudes, like, "God's ways are higher than our ways," or, on more than one occasion, I was told I was misled by the devil and I was going to hell. Mind you, I was a teenager asking honest questions. Since I was disregarded and cast aside, I followed my own path, which led to paganism and witchcraft. It's not until this past year that I was able to make sense of it all. This world is so full of enormous egos and glory-seekers. Why was I so easy to cast aside and enabled to walk astray? The Church failed me... big time. But I was determined to learn and understand what it's all about. And I did it on my own. I've seen from my youth how the Church is completely missing the point and focusing on all the wrong things. Religion doesn't save people. Only faith and hope in God can do that. I've done far better without "church" than I've been able to do in "church". But, no one would even be able to understand my story, or even hear me out. All it takes is one look at me, and people assume I'm lost or confused. I've had to rebuild my sense of reality, purpose, and meaning from the ground up, lay a foundation, and understand what religion is all about. I'm not the one that's confused. The one's who think they have all the answers are more lost than those who've had to suffer the trials and errors to learn things the hard way. I am disgusted by how sexist every religion is so no thanks, and the condoning of abuse and condemning of diverse sexialities and gender identities. Religion can find me when people start getting it right. Hence, never.

Christianity, Islam, Mormonism. Are all cults.
Judaism, Methodism, Lutheranism, Episcopalianism and Baptists are NOT cults( these are only Abrahmic religions.

Please explain how Christianity is a cult, but "Methodism, Lutheranism, Episcopalianism and Baptists" are not, even though they are forms of Christianity.
