Robert Thurman is Professor of Indo-Tibetan Buddhist Studies in the Department of Religion at Columbia University, President of Tibet House US, a non-profit organization dedicated to the preservation and promotion of Tibetan civilization, and President of the American Institute of Buddhist Studies. The New York Times recently hailed him as "the leading American expert on Tibetan Buddhism."
The first American to have been ordained a Tibetan Buddhist monk and a personal friend of the Dalai Lama for over 40 years, Professor Thurman is a passionate advocate and spokesperson for the truth regarding the current Tibet-China situation and the human rights violations suffered by the Tibetan people under Chinese rule. His commitment to finding a peaceful, win-win solution for Tibet and China inspired him to write his latest book, Why the Dalai Lama Matters: His Act of Truth as the Solution for China, Tibet and the World, published in June of 2008.
Professor Thurman also translates important Tibetan and Sanskrit philosophical writings and lectures and writes on Buddhism, particularly Tibetan Buddhism; on Asian history, particularly the history of the monastic institution in the Asian civilization; and on critical philosophy, with a focus on the dialogue between the material and inner sciences of the world's religious traditions.

Question: What is the difference between spirituality and religion?
Robert Thurman: Spirituality is love and compassion, as far as I’m concerned; meaning that you are not just being rationally stuck within what you think your body is wired to. You’re going into a deeper area of your mind where you are asserting your free will. You’re choosing to be friendly and compassionate with people whether or not they irritate you, or whether or not they’ve done something to you. You‘re nevertheless choosing some sort of extraordinary-it shouldn’t be extraordinary really-response or outreach to people. Spirituality really is touching; you let go of your self-protective and defensive controls, and what you tap into is the nature of the universe, the flow of energy interconnecting things. Then, you naturally feel like interconnecting. Spirituality is where you let go, therefore, of your narrow control of identifying yourself just as your body: “I’m holding on to my chair;” this kind of thing.
That is, of course, the heart of religion too, but unfortunately religion has this other component where it goes into something instead of what the sociologist might call “pattern transcending activity” or “mental activity.” It becomes a tool of the state and society, and their conventional culture, to control people. To say, “you have to do this,” and “you need that ritual, obey this rule.” It stifles people and spirituality, and in the name of it people will kill each other, and they’ll hate people who don’t have the same belief instead of being loving and friendly. They will misinterpret or they will allow the priesthoods to misinterpret the teachings of the great founders-who are truly spiritual, and who said, you know, “Don’t behave like that”-and they start behaving like the Roman Catholic Church.
The Catholic part is great: universal. The Church of Jesus is great. But the Roman part is the Roman Empire from Constantine, and it’s a dominating thing, and it’s conflicting even for the priesthood, and of course many of the priests were still saintly and wonderful, when they are more great mystics. They were better before the Protestants made then try to be more social, but to compete with them they too much adopted the stance of the Roman Empire is the problem. Religions do that. Buddhism too. It becomes a control mechanism rather than a liberating mechanism.

Going our own path put us as the creator but again, we are not the creators but the creation. and Gods creation is GOOD the way he made us is Good. Thats the spiritual growth we get when we have a spiritual relationship with God. Its a life long journey. :)

Spirituality is defined by Kenneth Pargament as "the search for the sacred". Spirituality is the human need of finding a connection with what we have, consciously or unconsciously, defined as what is most sacred to us. The sacred is different from person to person but this need to search for such meaningful attachment is definitely present in all humans.
Just imagine how peaceful the world would be without the 100+ religion/believe systems but everyone focussing on the world/peace within understanding being a multiple being, living a human/physical experience.. we're trapped in 3D existence out of the 10 dimensions..11 if you'd add time.... we only understand higher dimensions in theory 🤐... I relate so much. Often ppl use the bible to defend their ways and see someone who is more spiritual and free thinker as someone who doesn't obey. As long as they "obey" they can be forgiven by the most high so you should too. As a free thinker I believe God gives you free will and a conscience, as well as empathy along with sympathy. I just feel like the more ppl use bible verses to connect, there's even more who use it as a condescending tool. I understand the bible is the universal language of God but speaking from the heart is the universal language of love and that's where I operate from or else I think in some cases that it can seem contrived or phony. When I want to be preached to I'll of course go to church but not by people I love, I rather you level with me. If it helps, think of me as your homie who wants to help but has their own boundaries so you can't treat him just anyway you want.
Yep organized religion sets up humans as proxy gods, always looking for a reason to damn you. They love the idea of damnation. They are spiritual vampires. That's why so many people turn atheist.

Of which he said at 1:23-1:26 religion is part of spirituality through prayer, the Holy Spirit and the belief in the existence of God and Jesus Christ, but not everything in religion is spiritual because it involves other people's experiences and beliefs/practices that has been passed on over the years, which may or may not be biased. Therefore, not every aspect of religion can be understood spiritually because even in Christianity, we have sub-divisions.

Amazing! This is what I try to verbalize to my friends when they ask me what I mean when I say I’m not religious anymore and that I’m spiritual now. It’s the understanding that I am one with the universe and this omnipresent energy. And that goes for everyone too. And if we are all of the universe, by being kind to others, we are being kind to ourselves.

I'm a religious person and I disagree with the control part. I naturally love going to church, praying, and reading my bible. I also aim towards loving everyone, regardless of their religion
Have you thought about missing years of Jesus that is not mentioned in bible? Have you read about the killing of innocent people and raping women in the bible? Do you know there are over 100 gospels circulating in the first century after Jesus died? Have you heard of Council of Nicaea where a small group of men decided what should be included in the bible? There are tons of wisdom in the bible, but there are a lot of dark sides too.
Due to each place around the world having different cultures and ways of doing things, different religons were created. Every religon worships the same God, but in their own way. All religons are correct. However religons have negative aspects as well. For ex: Specific religons say they are the only religon that is correct, and put down others for worshipping a different way.
Specific religons stay in their specific areas due to cultural differences. If it were true that YOUR religon is the TRUE religon, why is specifically only a certain culture who uses it? Surely God wouldn't only save a specific part of the earth, becaude this is the hotspot for your religon and damn everyone else, who never really even got a chance to learn about it. There are isolated people on the otherside of the world, I guarantee you never heard about your religon. This doesn't mean they will be "damned" for eternity.
Holy books were written by man. Over time many were translated and changed over time. I don't trust man, I trust God. I will not be led astray into thinking "Women must submit to men" bc a book says it. I won't be led astray by not accepting others because of sexualities. Worshipping God is about improving yourself and loving God and helping others, not about putting a group down because they are different from you. This world was divided as a test from God. Those who accept and love everyone for who and what they are despite differences, and do good, will be rewarded.
No one knows what the afterlife really is. I dont know if there is a heaven or hell. However I do know that my God loves me, and I am a good person. I don't believe just bc I don't conform with a certain religon that ill suffer for eternity.

The difference between religion and spirituality are the precepts and self belief system we have in our lifestyles. We can be religious Christians or spiritual Christians. The way spiritual people think is eternal mindset and thinking which effects the spiritual world. Religious people effect natural life and the 5 senses of persona. Touch, taste, smell, hear, and see.

I generally agree with the distinction you lay out here, but I think it’s a mistake to label religion’s conservative or institutional tendencies a bad thing. My opinion is that it is the institution that provides the discipline most of us need to become truly wise spiritually. I think it is also a mistake at the beginning to define spirituality as love. There is a lot of hateful spirituality as well (prayers to curse others, voodoo to make others suffer, black magic generally, etc). They are codependent forces that should be respected, not pitted against each other.
Voodoo/hoodoo is initially for connecting to ancestors. But yes, it can be used for bad things💯👎🏾
DamnDude I agree, I don’t know enough about voodoo to say much about it, but like all spiritual traditions it appears to involve a lot of blessings and curses. There’s nothing wrong with that as long as we recognize the facts honestly.

The spirit is the essence of the soul, the life force that influences the life of a person. It could be evil or divine or bad spirit or good spirit. The good spirit are love, kindness, mercy, compassion etcetera while the bad spirit are hate, jealousy, anger etcetera. Spirituality is a term to refer to the state of being spiritual as opposed to viewing the physical or material aspect of things or the actuality of events. Religion generally refers to a belief in God, A spiritual person may not be religious but a religious person is always spiritual. Devotion is common to both terms.
Religion is learning from other people experiences, while spirituality is having your OWN experience instead.....and that is why I prefer to be more spiritual!

Speaking from my experience, some religious people (not all of them, of course) are just so controversial. My roommate, for example, always tells me that the Gospel and Bible are the only truth, that all other religions and the concept of spirituality itself are all from the devil, that the world is black and white only, and that the only "white side" of it is Jesus. I don't think bad of any religions for as long as people do not materialize them. Say, my rommie says that God is not in your heart but in church only. But... what if she is happend to be away from the church for a long time, does it mean there is no God by her side? I also often hear from her that animals are created by the GOD only for his children (us) to eat it. I don't wanna lie, she is generally a good and fun girl but I can 100% tell that all those believes and being obsessed on doing what Bible tells you to do just really suppresses her. She would not even allow herself to at least try to stop her thoughts for a moment and "clear her mind". Because... you guess it... only the GOD must be in her mind and by living in now, she believes, she walks towards the dark world away from you-know-whom. I do believe in god as well, I must say. But, really, what is the point of personalising him? If you were a buffalo (with an incredibly developed cerebral cortex😅), you'd believe god is a buffalo, wouldn't you? So, what I am trying to say is, please, just make sure that in this life you did your best, became your authentic self, helped as many people, or animals, or nobody (if that's what you really want) as you could. I think that harming life around you as little as you can, being always grateful, doing things that you like, developing your talents, sharing your experience with others and so on is what matters after all. Of course, there are plenty great spiritual teachers to listen to, but if you start worshipping them, materializing their teachings etc, forcing yourself into doing whatever they say, I am sorry to tell that but for me you are no smarter than a buffalo.
For me life and spirituality is really all about not having any expectations, being grateful and doing your best ❤️

Spirituality is accepting that we do not know everything, but understanding we're having this "earth" experience. We are supposed to help, love and pray for ourselves, as well as others. Personally I don't believe in Jesus, but I believe in God, the creator and first consciousness.

I agree God the universal mind has no need of religion or churches/temples. However the god of the old testament Yaweh was a flesh and blood tyrant. The Sumerian culture built temples as houses for the sons of god who lived among them. Their priests were keepers of esoteric knowledge and liasons to the ordinary people. See im more spiritualist than Christian i mean i guess there are some connections with the bible but for my questioning why would God create us and know everything that's going to happen that knows our every move even if he knows that we would "go to hell" and he knows we wouldn't like that but couldn't he just come to our dreams or for us to have an NDE so we can talk to him and for him to tell us to we should believe the bible from the first to last page? I mean I don't blame people who became an atheist because how can someone believe in a scripture that's been rewritten over the years i mean someone could actually had held onto the scripture and change somethings and that could mess the whole religion thing up and we'll end up in hell like come on now but i do believe in a God who is a loving creator who made us so we can experience love, hate, pain, grief so we can have emotions and yes i do believe in reincarnation (sorry if this whole statement doesn't make sense)

Im not Christian, or no part of supernatural belief. But I love studying all religions.
To understand the bible you must use greek and hebrew dictionaries. Pastors are afraid to tell members this from what I experienced. But hell in Hebrew is sheol- gravepit. The underworld fireplace is called hades(greek). Lake of fire is the second death(destroying the corps)(cremated).God in the bible is the "god of hope" elpis/elpo in greek. Which means anticipation(usually pleasure) it's a feminine noun and greeks dont call elpis a god. They represent elpis as a spirit, woman, continued suffering. The bible has hidden true meanings that's cluttered in a fictional story which is called a allegorical message. For example: I'm so hungry that I can eat a cow.
Jesus, virgin mary, God are characters who personificate attributes of our solar system to help explain the mechanism of our earth. For example: "Shower blessings". Meant that when food from the storehouse went to the field, god showered rain on the crops. So that everybody ate from the field. (Storehouse was located beside the temple) storehouse stores, foods and seeds which are the tiths(never money). Because money dont grow on trees.
Theres more stories like jesus or a man walking on water as allegorical.

@@shaggythegrim9939 correct, I love studying these things. It's just interesting on how interpretations, words, symbols, literature can come so long. And people overlook on how impactful our ideas are to us and the world itself.
God is omnipotent and has the power to do anything because he is "God". But you are assuming that he uses his power to follow our every step in life. Let's assume that God pays attention to everything that we do in life. Even then he is not controlling our actions because we have "free will". Therefore humans are sending themselves to hell by the actions that they commit. God gives signs to everyone and if you feel like you've received no signs seek a 1 on 1 relationship with God and he will appear to you. The original manuscripts of the Bible which are in "Hebrew" and "Greek" are still available today so if the Bible was altered and changed we would know. English translations are changed to fit the understanding of the reader but overall the original manuscripts are there to observe if you learn either Hebrew or Greek.
Spirituality is good and important but it does not define what is good and what is bad. So when it comes to the question what is good and what is bad you can ask a billion people and you get 10billion answers, that’s where spirituality loses its eligibility. Religious people don’t let other human beings decide about what’s good and bad because humans are limited in thinking, only god is not limited. You should read about all the big 5 world religions do your own research and hopefully you will find not only peace but also the one and only truth. Thanks for reading

Christianity has corrupted Understanding. Fathers are not creators. It takes both father and Mother to create a child and the mother has more to do with the creation than does the father. The child is attached to the mother for nine months receiving nutriments for the creation. Religion has refused to give respect to the female until the modern time.
And Gods are not creators. There are a great many Gods that have been worshiped. Gods are just Imaginary mythical personages of worship; Gods are not Creators.
There is one and only Great Creator. And the Great Creator is not an imaginary mythical personage somewhere in space.
The basic principle of Christianity is unjust, it is fraud. To kill one man for the crime of all humanity is truly fraud. It is also human sacrifice. It is Leading down from the Jewish animal sacrifice. It is all very primitive and ignorant.
Christianity goes to other nations and successfully deceives many of them in the worshiping of their Imaginary Mythical Gods.
Then, they go to war for the nation that they worship and kills their own member of their own churches.

Christianity’s basic principles promotes dishonesty. You are to accept what you are told. You need no proof or understanding. Truly fraud: one man executed for the crimes of all Humanity. It is from the primitive sacrificing of animals to their many Mythical Gods.
It is True Science and the unseeable spiritual activity that has proven the existence of the Great Creator. It is not religion that has proven anything. As religion is based on Fantasy.
The Great Creator is not a being as most religions claim: ‘as one of those imaginary mythical gods some were in space.’
And Evolution does not mean that there is no Great Creator. Evolution is perhaps and likely, just one of the outstanding process of the Great Creator.
The spiritual realms are the most important part of True Science.
The Great Creator, Matter, Energy, Knowledge, Space, and Time has always existed, No beginning and no end. And cannot be created or destroyed.
The Great Creator Saturates and Surrounds all Existence.
Matter, Energy, Knowledge, Space, and Time are just different viewpoints and concepts of the Great Creator. They all are just components of the Great Creator from different perspectives.
Religion has been the failed and futile attempt to search for the Great Creator and to the understanding of creation.
And creation is only the rearrangement of Matter. We just call that rearrangement, creation. Matter is not created from nothing; Matter has always existed. And there is an abundance of matter in the endlessness of space.
And knowledge and understanding are not created in the human brain. The brain was only designed and created to receive Knowledge.
Truth is all that truly exists. Other than Truth there is just the understood concept of an absence.
Even lies, whether intended to deceive or not, are Fantasy. Lies remain in the Fantasy realms, in the nonexistent realm.
And as for those who think that the creation of the universe and life was created without intelligence, are in the world of fantasy.

I will have been 90 years on this earth, next year. In my lifetime I have experienced Many miracles and spiritual activity. There has been much spiritual activity among My Kin and close associates.
Children revealed knowledge they could not have known except from spiritual realms. Much foretelling of the future; And miracles of healings.
One outstanding example is my mother at about twelve years old dreamed that my grandfather was shot in the back and rob of five hundred dollars by his favorite nephew. Some years back I and my oldest brother looked him up and had a visit with him. He had been out of prison for many years when we had our visit with him. He told us that he suffered more in his conscience all his life more than the time he was in prison.
Even those children born with special talents are the result of spirit activity.
It is very difficult for those who have not experienced these things to understand the spiritual realms.
Spirituality has nothing to do with the worshiping of the Imaginary Mythical Gods. There are great many Gods. Gods are just Imaginary Mythical Personages of worship.
There is just one and only Great Creator that created all that exists.

I do research on how Buddhism disappeared in Bihar. I realized it never disappeared from Bihar. Buddhists simply failed to research Indian Buddhism. The locals there pray to 'BHIKHAINI' Baba (Beggar Baba). Bhikhaini was mispronounced by Buddhists as Bhikshu. Who is BHIKHAINI Baba. The Buddha no doubt. But people are searching for a man called Buddha. In the real Vaishali, in Beluha the Buddha suffered a sickness and felt he had grown old. The locals pray to 'BURHA' Baba (Old Baba). Who is BURHA Baba. The Buddha no doubt. In the real Vaishali the Lichavies pressurized Buddha not to die. They trailed him to Bandagawan pressurizing him not to die. To put pressure in Hindi is DABESHWAR. Three dozen villages around the stupa where Buddha gave the Lichavies his patra, the villagers pray to Baba 'DABESHWAR NATH' meaning the man who won the pressurizing game. I have to say that the only reason I even stumbled on this video is to obtain research for an essay. I specifically chose religion v.s spirituality because I am a Christian and I know that religion entails it's super natural side. However what I have stumbled on through out my entire research is witch craft and false information manipulating people into thinking Christianity over all is the worst thing that they could choose. That is not the case yes people say that the Bible has dark sides to it but do you even know what sin is? You can steal, kill, lie all of the things that you know are wrong and still Jesus will forgive you if you seek forgiveness. The only reason that sin exist in the first place is because Adam at the fruit that God said not to eat. Why? Because the devil manipulated/ tricked Eve into eating it and by extension Adam. Boom! That's when sin fell on mankind. But there is good news that the Bible clearly stated. God sent his only begotten son, Jesus Christ to die on a cross for our sins. If you believe that Jesus died for your sins, confess it with your mouth and believe in your heart that he is the son of God. Then you are saved, you just need to not live for the world but for God. Ask God to send the Holy Spirit upon you so that he can Guide you. Now your maybe wondering, why is there Jesus and what is the Holy Spirit. Firstly, Jesus is God in the flesh and he has the spirit of God in Him and He is not dead. And the Holy Spirit, he is God in the spirit, he enters us when we ask God to send him upon you so that we are always with God and have discernment. And some one mentioned that the Bible has dark sides to it...Yes it does. Because God gave us free will and if people choose darkness He will not force them to choose the light. He is not responsible for all of the dark things, Satan is . Don't you want to know what the presence of God feels like, do you even know that we, the true Christians, are not afraid of demons. Because our Lord is King of Kings and Lord of Lords we have authority over demons and satan, we can cast out demons, heal the sick and the blind in the name of Jesus. Why? Because Jesus is not dead and He is coming back soon, and it might be sooner than some of you expect. So are you going to sit there and say "well some of the Bible is missing so I don't read it and they killed people in the Bible so it's not good etc". Please do not do this we cannot change back time to what was "stolen" I am not sure or this, however God did allow it for a reason. God's word (the Holy Bible) is power and knowledge and wisdom. Have a relationship with Jesus. Talk to him from your heart, he listens and answers prayers. Also please do not think that prayers are like magic tricks, God reveals all that we need to know for the good plans He has for us on His own timings. Please do not believe in this spiritual which craft and come to what Jesus has in store for us. Remember Jesus Loves you and through him you have eternal life in Heaven, rather than eternal separation and death from him in Hell. The devil wants to trick you into believing that Jesus is not real or the devil himself is not real, please don't fall prey to this. From the beginning Satan was an lier, he is the father of lies and all that he wants it to seal (souls too), kill (hell is the second and eternal death) and destroy. Also not all religion is of God. These religions are Mormanism, Catholic, Buddah, Islam, Satanism and lots more. All religions that are not Christianity these are false, the devil just uses this as another way to trick you. It doesn't matter if your gay, steal, lie or sin, just know that Jus forgives sins. Being gay is not normal that's Jezebel (a demon)...all things in this world is spiritual And just as there are demons my living God has angels protectin us from these demons.
