I love how before I started pottery I would have seen this video and thought “oh, cool, it only takes, like, 10 minutes to make a plate! “… many years and hundreds of failed pieces later I have such an appreciation for your plates ❤🙏
Haha yes everything looks so much easier and quicker when it’s compressed down into a 10 min video! Most people definitely don’t know that the process is weeks in the making and years of practice and skill!

Thank you!!! I’m glad someone took notice because that’s definitely an intentional part of the design aha!!! A lot of designs got trashed (well in the clays case, reclaimed), due to the plate stack not looking how I wanted! 😂

Your work is very lovely. After trimming do you dry your plates covered or uncovered, right side up or up side down. I sometimes get s- cracks and slumping. Thanks so much for sharing your video ❤
Thank you so much. I actually let my plates dry uncovered on a perfectly flat surface (in my case the butcher block table)! I also dry them right side up on the foot! I’ve never had an issue with slumping because I trim my plates on the hard side of leather hard. So when I pop the plate off of the bat, it’s dry enough so the plate doesn’t bow or warp! My finger also doesn’t make an indent when pressing on the underside of the plate, if it does I set it back down and let it dry further before trimming. S cracks can be due to not compressing enough, handling too much when it’s wet (it’s so crucial to wait until the plate is dry enough before touching it again after throwing), not wiring off right after throwing (if you don’t wire off after throwing the plate has a lot of tension when drying), and finally uneven trimming of the base! Plates definitely take a lot of time and patience! 😅

Is there a clear glaze that keeps the natural colour of the clay in the finished product? I am in love with the natural colour of the dried clay before it's fired.
A glossy or satin clear glaze could be applied over the bisque ware to make the plate food safe but keep the natural color.
How do you keep it flat and not warp? Always worried about it.
I wait until the plate is on the harder side of leather hard before taking it off of the bat. I find if you try and force the plates off of bats thats when they seem to warp. I should just be able to flip the bat over and the plate will pop off without any additional help! I also make sure to let the plates dry on a perfectly flat surface!
