    The artist in 20:22 is Barron Storey. He was a professor to some of your favorite artists. Look him up. You'll dig his work! Bill Sienkiewicz even mentions this artist when you guys your interviewed him.

    Avatar Press is actually located in a TINY little run down town a couple miles from where I live. Only realized that while reading Alan Moore’s Providence and noticed the location.
    I own a small record store and I used to share a building with a comic shop and I knew the owner well.
    Asked him if he knew anything about Avatar. His story was back in the day the guy that started it was a known spoiled rich kid around town. His dad then bought him a building and gave him the capital for opening a comic shop.
    Then years later moved into distribution and printing and left town to the run down town, bought a warehouse to run the company out of…
    Crazy to think just a couple miles over there’s a company releasing Alan Moore and Garth Ennis comics

    I love seeing these kinda long box deep dives. I remember a lot of those issues! (And it surprised me to see several in there I worked on!) I hope you do more of these! They’re very inspiring.

    Awesome pile of cool stuff. Michel Rabagliatti, who wrote and drew PAUL IN THE COUNTRY (and many other award winning Paul stories) is not european. He was born in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. His stories have been published in Canada (in original french language), in the US and in Europe (in french, italian, spanish, german, etc.). He won many awards for his work. One of his graphic novel was even turned into a movie.

    Zombie War, nice! Got issues 1 and 4 as a little kid at a gas station that just had a random stack of used comics for like 50 cents each.
    Was able to get them in trade paperback form like a year ago to finally read the whole thing. Fun stuff.

    Loved seeing the DR and Quinch 2000 AD comic - DR And Quinch was one of the first comics I ever read and to this day it is still one of my favorites - wonderfully funny and anti-social - If James Gunn has no knowledge of DR and Quinch then he should because I could see him bringing them to life on the silver screen.

    Verotik had one of the most infamous and vile comic books in the 90s: a taste of cherry. It was really controversial in the Usa. But if you compare with some japanese and european stuff in the 80s, not so much

    • @antgto
      @antgto 5 років тому +2

      I got Verotika #4 in the mail a year or so ago before heading to work, and read A Taste of Cherry. I had no prior knowledge of its infamy, and that fucking story was stuck in my head all day. All the sick ingredients for a rape/revenge plot, minus the revenge. So far it's the most fucked up comic I've read, so I guess I'm glad to own, haha.

    Is this guy from Toronto or Southern Ontario? There's so much Canadiana, in these boxes.. 'Andromeda' was published by Andromeda Distribution. I worked for them briefly, in the mid-80's.. Vortex Comics had an office a few doors down from the 'Silver Snail' comic shop on Queen Street West. The publisher was Bill Marks. 'Renegade Press' began when Dave Sim divorced his wife Deni Loubert. She ended up publishing quite a bit of stuff.. that 'Renegade Romance' has a nice Jim Sullivan story where he modeled the male lead after his favorite artist: Frazetta..

    Look out for 'Memory Man', by the same guy who did the 'Love Bomb' comic you found. He was (is) an English cartoonist and he is top. I had it years ago, which is why I can't remember his name.. Paul something. Ironically, MY memory has failed me.

    I can't help noticing you guys passed by that issue of Truckin' without looking inside. As black and white comics fans, you're gonna want to get acquainted with Geo. Metzger. The guy is great, one of my very favourite underground comix creators, with a unique cartooning style you'll learn to recognise at fifty paces, and one of the names that comes up when people try to pin down who produced the first genuine 'graphic novel'. He created a special, hippified brand of pre-steampunk steam-driven post-industrial future fantasy probably most fully realized in the three great issues of his hero Moondog. Fantagraphics Underground recently reprinted his claim to graphic novel fame, Beyond Time And Again, which is nice, but honestly not as good as some of his other still uncollected eco-SF, like that issue of Truckin' you got there. I'd love it if Fantagraphics would put out an omnibus collecting all his stuff, pages of which are scattered through any number of undergrounds. I think I spotted the first issue of Verotika in that bunch of books too, which contains a great Lovecraftian tantric detective story by Grant Morrison and Ted Naifeh -- an erotic comic actually worth reading, not just looking at the pictures, for a change.

    Areba Koala is infamous, it's a weird anomaly, underground only by dint of distribution only I guess but it's more like an 80s b/w cutesy animal comic, half lame half creepy lol
