I have the same hair texture/thickness, I find when curling hair like this with the loose curl look it always works best if I blowdry it very smoothly and curl piece by pice with a flat iron. The flat iron does the best job of smoothing frizz while creating that loose curl.
I'm assuming it's a bit frizzy at the root because y'all were probably exaughsted after all that work and doing a full blow out would have been a lot of work.. but I just thought I'd share what works for me!!!
