- This is a blank version of the Hiker Food Chart developed in the video series: Performance Nutrition for Backpackers. It is all set for you to enter your own food items, and the analysis fields will fill in for you automatically, including the color codes for the nutritional value ratings!

Pro-tip, try clicking the Form button on the home tab. This will open a data entry form for one row at a time. It's just a different way of accomplishing the same thing, but it may be easier for some people.
Thanks! Pinned this.
You sir, deserve a whole lot more recognition than what you received so far. I can't believe less than a thousand people have seen this video.
What you are doing for backpackers is INCREDIBLE. You are appreciated, so much! Your food chart (highly trimmed for my own preferences) is my GO-TO for building an ultra-high-calorie food list for a 12 day unsupported push. THANK YOU THANK YOU.
Thank you so much! I am very glad if it can help. 🙂
Thank you for this incredible series of videos. There's nothing better than listening to a Carl Sagan sound alike explain the "millions and millions" of lightweight trail food choices. I'm looking forward to more videos.
You are effing AMAZING!!! Thank you for running down all this data!!!! I’m a nurse and this is right up my alley!!
Thanks! I am very glad if any of it helps!
This is great thanks! Being carnivore with mostly homemade trail food I didn’t find much on the food chart 2.5 that I could use. This will be very helpful :)
Mighty generous of you to put out this resource! I also thought of this when a few of the bars and Trader Joe's trail mixes that I eat weren't in your master sheet, and wondered if we could help you by populating your sheet with info we find on other products. It appears that your Excel sheet formulas & shading work in Google Sheets, so maybe that's an easy open platform for this. It only seems fitting that we should help you by adding to what you've built. Thanks again.
Holy shit balls this is the most useful video series I've seen since I started backpacking. Thanks for the template!
Thanks very much! You are most welcome.
Fantastic! Thank you...and Happy Holidays to you and yours.
You know what, you are my hero. I truly love you
Thank you so much for this :D
Great idea for an upcoming series on water purification! Would love to hear your thoughts on UV (steripen) if that's not already addressed in the physical or chemical parts. Probably overkill, but I've also wondered about the efficacy of combined approaches. I'm serious that you've got the making of a great book (or series of them) with your in-depth analysis of these topics!
Yes! I think combined approaches have definite advantages in certain situations. And thanks for the reminder about UV.
Thank you this is awesome!
Amazing!!! Thank you!
Thank You 😆
Wish i could use this but with no office on my laptop it wont let me type anything in :( great info though!
Thank you!
You are most welcome!
Neat chart, thanks for sharing. What are the NA and K fields?
Sodium and Potassium!
Would you consider putting together an example 5-day meal plan?
Well, I’m wrapped up in the research and writing on my next series on backcountry water treatment methods. But, I would like to circle back around to food for a couple of things, including full sample menus plus some thoughts on volumetric density (instead of just caloric density). In other words, how many calories can you fit in a bear canister? Eventually 😯
@@GearSkeptic thanks so much. I also wonder if a video on vitamins/minerals might be a good addition to the optimum nutrition theme.
This is great!
However, does anyone know how to create my own fields that auto calculate Protein/oz and another that calculates Carb/oz? It's been a long time since my Statistics college class...
Say you want the “W” column to be protein/oz. In the W2 cell, enter the formula “=O2/D2”. Then just drag that formula all the way down the column to the bottom, which will copy it all the way, automatically applying it appropriately as it goes (meaning W3 will have “=O3/D3”, etc).
Then just do the same with the “X” column for carb/oz using the formula “=K2/D2” in the X2 cell. And drag that one down, as well using that tiny little handle in the bottom right corner of the bounding box of the selected cell.
@@GearSkeptic Thank you. That has been incredibly helpful.
Just a quick heads up: the "daily menu" part of the chart is a little broken. the fat% and sugar % aren't working for me.
The "hiker food" chart works perfectly fine though
I don’t have a tab for “daily menu” in my chart. Could this be one of the third-party charts I mentioned?
@gearskeptic I might be a dolt, but do you have this chart available?
Yes! You can download it through the link in the description box.
Got a problem with your spreadsheet. The formulas in columns R and S refer to column G. But there is no column G. What's up with that?
For this chart, column G is hidden. It was built only as a pre-calculation field to assist in other formulas.
If you prefer to see it, you can unhide the column.
how do we down load you 900 food chart?
If you mean the one that is filled with food items, here is the link:
