These instructors likely make about 5 times as much as a typical high school teacher, and work half as many hours. That might be a hint as to why they don't seem "burned out"...
Something none of them mention or explain is the disc loading of a helicopter. The heavier the helicopter the more difficult autorotation is to virtually impossible. If you are in a helicopter that weighs a 1000kg and downward air velocity is only 5ms, you only have to descend at 5ms to maintain rotor rpm, but try doing that in a helicopter that weighs 10000+kg with thrust velocity of 30+ms. Arresting such mass with such velocity is very difficult.
Love the helo content as a former Blackhawk pilot. I've autorotated hundreds of times. My first flight in NVGs we lost an engine during an autorotation. That'll wake you up in the middle of the night! Waiting on the call to come pick up my Trackhawk and meet you!

700 is the scale reference for helicopter? Is it a 1-1000 system similar to how I've seen model planes listed as a percentage? Like is that the helicopter equivalent to a 70% scale model airplane? Or is it a different system?
i flew aerobatic rc helicopter competitions for years and we have driven tails during autos so we can do all sorts of tricks. and since we run equal pitch positive or negative (i usually had it setup for +11, -11) you can do inverted autos with a pushover near the deck to really wow the crowd... What a blast to watch. I learned to fly helicopters at Falcon Field in 2019. I spent hours on that ramp in a Schweizer 300, it was a blast watching those MDs doing their thing.
Autorotation training is terrifying but one of the most fun things you can do. This kind of training, outside of what's required, is so valuable for when a real failure happens. You can let your body and mind take over and go through everything automatically if you're trained enough. Great job Cleetus.
My dad was a Lt. Col. In the U.S. Army. He flew the UH-1 Huey, AH-1 Cobra and OH-6 Loach. I would go watch him practice auto rotations. He hated it, lol. Im pretty sure it scared the crap out of him. Im so grateful i grew up around helicopters. Im still madly in love with rotary aircraft.
I've enjoyed watching you grow since the duck call video days... Now I must say you are doing something now that is a dream and on a fellers bucket list... If you're ever flying over southeast Kansas, I have plenty of clear landing available with a great view of the Neosho River.
lol, if that grey one isn't the channel's future helicopter, I'll be shocked. MD is smart, this is where their marketing budget should be. This is not just good for their brand, it's bringing awareness and excitement to the helicopter world.
Loved the video Cleeter! Incorporating the aviation in your library has been awesome. Especially the fling wings. I was an AME (helicopter maintenance engineer) moons ago. The first time I had to set autorotation rpm, which was on a Hughes 369D, no one warned me about the sudden drop. Just about left my lunch up there. We were doing them from 3500’. The 500 is a great machine until you need to work on the accessory case of the Allison. 😳
Years ago I was loader driver for Wishart Helicopters in New Zealand. Working with a Bell 47G We were coming into the local air field after a day out working. The pilot John Hamilton [ ex RAF ] asked if I had ever been in a helicopter when the motor cut. I told him no. About a thousand feet over the air field he cut the motor. All you could hear was was the swishing of the rotor blades. He sat it on the ground beautifully I worked with helicopters on Ag work, animal control and venison recovery. There jus t no other aircraft like the helicopter. I just love them
You're living the dream, Cleetus. If I made it financially, learning to fly a helicopter is EXACTLY what I would do. Great video. Fun to watch and I learned a lot.
For anyone interested in a great book, look at "Chickenhawk" by Robert Mason about flying Hueys in Vietnam. They used to be able to clear their own LZ with those giant blades, trimming small trees and brush on the way in. Those giant twin blades stored so much energy that they could be sitting on the ground, fail the engine then pick up the helicopter into a hover, spin it around 360 degrees and put it back down on the ground. Great read by some very young, brave dudes.
Holy cow. Thanks for recommending that. His story on cutting that bamboo for the first time is absolutely amazing. Every heli pilot should know how heroic flying saved lives.
That is precisely the story that came to my mind when Garret was talking about stored energy. it's a good book, the ending shocked me. I'd also recommend Permission to Kill by Brian Wizard to get the story from the boys in the back.
Hey Cleeter…that was a very cool video. My brother is the shipper at Lord ..they manufacture the rotor parts for most all copters from ones like the one you are flying to the biggest Sikorskys..Blackhawks..and more. He knows alot about the workings on those units… hell yeah brother!

Important skills to have so if it hits the fan you'll know what to do and walk away. Like playing in a big parking lot in the snow taught me what my car does and how to get out of it if it goes bad. Was great fun doing donuts and has saved my butt many times since 👍
That's exactly how I was taught to drive in snow. We went out driving, dad stopped and stuck me behind the wheel, randomly pulling E brake handle to simulate a random loss of traction. It taught me a lot about car control, and it's the first thing I do every winter to make sure I haven't lost the muscle memory. This winter it's my wife's turn. She's a great driver but no experience in winter weather as a driver, only a passenger.
@@goosenotmaverick1156 I did it on my own in my Dart. We used to have a dog track close by where I lived so huge parking lot empty during the winter. Every time it snowed I'd go there and play. I put sway bars and a sure grip in it and had great fun relearning how to drive the car again. Posi really changed how the car reacted but once I knew what it did I was drifting and spinning it around the nose and other dumb stuff.
@@69Dartman oh yeah that'll change the dynamic for sure, sounds like fun! I generally go to our local mall parking lot. The old Sears is a gym and a government office now, and the JcPenney is dead even in the best weather. For the most part nobody even cares, as long as we don't interfere with business or crash into anything and damage it (sometimes a car gets broken but rare) the cops don't kick anyone out. It's honestly a pretty healthy way for a lot of the younger crowd to go teach themselves and have a little fun where everyone has consented to the risk. It's totally unorganized and unplanned, but it tends to work really well for the area. Last year there was every kind of car. I see all sorts hanging out and chatting, taking their respectful turns at hooning. I was impressed by the younger crowd from our area, for sure. There were trucks, Ford fusions (multiple, as in 3 or 4 different ones) The typical challenger, charger, 300, etc. A few mustangs Camaros Old stuff and new, it gave me some faith in humanity last year for a few moments.
@@goosenotmaverick1156 Oh yeah, the cops never bothered me or anyone else doing it. It would get really busy sometimes so you had to keep your head on a swivel and pick your spots. I almost slid into a pole one time and nothing was working so I tapped the brakes and it just stopped 🤔 usually hitting the brakes was the last thing you'd do and just made things worse. Guess between the friction and the snow piling up in front of the tires it worked.

Autorotation training is terrifying but one of the most fun things you can do. This kind of training, outside of what's required, is so valuable for when a real failure happens. You can let your body and mind take over and go through everything automatically if you're trained enough. Great job Cleetus.
I know right power off in a helicopter happens fast
That instructor was awesome, “I’ll critique myself” humble, talented pilot.
I do the same when driving and often say 'that wasn't right' or 'I shouldn't have done that'
@@morris2450only way you get better. You're probably a very good driver.
I am a student pilot so I really enjoy the aviation content and with my love for cars this channel is starting to be the best of both worlds thanks
lol, if that grey one isn't the channel's future helicopter, I'll be shocked. MD is smart, this is where their marketing budget should be. This is not just good for their brand, it's bringing awareness and excitement to the helicopter world.
Shoutout to Parker from NorCal. Miss flying with you brother. Great to see you’re still sporting that positive attitude man.
LOVING the aviation content. Keep 'em coming.
Your instructor was soo good, I'm pretty sure I can land one of these now if I lost power. You guys made it look so easy.
Just remember to flare right before the touchdown.
Ya Parker is a badass pilot. I have many hrs flying with Parker doing Powerline work out here in NorCal.
@@bobwallace-yj6xb Ever do Oregon?
"Best sound in the world" = Spot on
Years ago I was loader driver for Wishart Helicopters in New Zealand. Working with a Bell 47G
We were coming into the local air field after a day out working.
The pilot John Hamilton [ ex RAF ] asked if I had ever been in a helicopter when the motor cut. I told him no.
About a thousand feet over the air field he cut the motor.
All you could hear was was the swishing of the rotor blades.
He sat it on the ground beautifully
I worked with helicopters on Ag work, animal control and venison recovery.
@@mikewest712 How did you just read an entire book in 15 minutes???
@@mikewest712 Add Low Level Hell to that list, Loach pilots are legitimately insane with some of the shit they pulled scouting for the Cobras.
I, I mean we, smell a setup lol@@Vashtorical
That is precisely the story that came to my mind when Garret was talking about stored energy. it's a good book, the ending shocked me. I'd also recommend Permission to Kill by Brian Wizard to get the story from the boys in the back.
Been waiting on the helicopter content! cant wait to see whats in the garage at the house
Huge thanks for this content! Really a treat to watch
What a video cleeter probably my favorite thing you’ve posted in awhile you’re an absolute unit you drive, fly, drag, drift, circle track, jet boat race, father, brother, and husband my boi Cleetus can do anything and excel keep it up!
Had me holding my breath and grabbing my seat the first couple landings! Amazing stuff!
Something about this guy I don't get it. He is really attuned to what he is doing and has great hand eye and his built in gyroscope allows him to operate any type of vehicle. He is such a special guy. I'm really happy I found his videos years ago and watched him progress through it all. Great job again Garrett!
the cleeter mcskeeter airforce is growing at a rapid rate.
next up, drag racing on an aircraft carrier.
Talk about relying on those TBM brakes 😂
Beautiful MD500! Great autorotation parcticing...😉 Useful video for student helicopter pilots!
Lol when the A.D.D kicks in!!...... that was so sick, that was butter ....."oh look a l39" great video cleetus

There were trucks, Ford fusions (multiple, as in 3 or 4 different ones)
The typical challenger, charger, 300, etc.
A few mustangs
Camaros
Old stuff and new, it gave me some faith in humanity last year for a few moments.
Im convinced that cleetus can operate anything with an engine and make it look like he has done it since birth.
You and the guys did an awesome job. Learning those skills can and will save your lives. Great job guys. Keep up the great work
As someone who has zero experience with aviation, I could watch Ole cleet flying for hours. His ability to film edit to make it entertaining is next level.
Best up your life insurance for little cleet. How many legends have died regardless of training?
I used to think that once the engine stopped, it was game over. Now, I have newfound hope, as long as there are no trees or obstacles in the way.
During an auto, one can still maneuver to avoid obstacles.
This is incredible! Is there anything Cleetus can’t do?!
Yea Id say that MD is a bit better than a R44. Hehee
RESPECT G... that was awesome. I'm an aircraft technician that keeps the T-38 Talon in service. That was impressive on so many levels. Great job team.
Nailed that 2nd landing Brother!3rd one and ,4th one was woulda stayed asleep if I was counting sheep ,5th one you was just showing off!Hell yeah great job my brother from another!
I can't believe they are going to give you one for free after visiting their factory! 😂
Anyone else get nervous as hell just watching this? Hopefully you are never in a situation that requires you to use this training. Excellent training video. Thank you for sharing such an awesome experience !!!
Guy who has the record for the highest flight in a helicopter also has the record for a landing with no engine on when landing. Made both records in 1 flight, accidently.
I mean, might as well right? You are already up there. 😅
was it a case of " FUCK IT, HOLD MY BEER" or FUCK!! Hold my beer!
Wild. Fixed wing enthusiast all my life. Had no clue that there was something other than magic involved in helicopters! Thanks for the great break downs man!
That instructor builds confidence and in my opinion is one of the best tools to build for success
The fact that you practice emergency auto rotation right next to all of the those planes tied down was giving me a butt pucker factor of 10 out of 10.
I was thinking the same thing aren’t they a little close to the parked airplanes
Awesome video dude! I leaned a lot about the aerodynamics of the rotating wing from how you described the pitch and collective controls. You are obviously adept at helicoptering and have a deep understanding of these machines. Thank-you for being technical. We really love these kinds of videos.
That was amazing, never knew these beauties could do that. So cool to see you nail it, great job Cleet. Better start saving for one!!
It's nice to see they are still being made. My time with them goes back to OH6 C and D models, back in 1980 thru 83 in the 160th. Forming the unit. Used to take a few of the pilots in a fixed wing. Only problem was they always thought we should slow down to land. Lol. Nice job training.
Awesome I love this,
I absolutely love being an air where are used to watch you and use the stuff that lawnmower and Kyle‘s trunk of his vet to this! One of the only UA-camrs I love keep it up!
That is 1000% one of the best instructors / hype men ever.
"That was better than me. I'mma have you teach the class man." Has me smiling for him.
What's great about that is you were able to bring actual friends with you to enjoy that experience
It’s cool to see other people fall in love with rotor wing avaiation. As a helicopter gunner I had the opportunity to do so many badass things, see crazy things, and land in wild place. I was also able to be apart of saving peoples lives. Best job I ever had!
Autos are fun as hell with rc's. Sounds like it just multiplies with size. So HELL YEAH dude!!!
Riding with cleetus would be the most comfortable ride of my life weather at 180mph or 60mph. Dude can drive fly etc like a true pro.. well done sir well done!
