Matt Traum EVI - “Overjoyed”

  • Matt Traum (from Patchman Music) plays his vintage Steinerphone EVI (handmade by EVI / EWI inventor Nyle Steiner) that Matt personally customized. The very rare EVI is one of the very first EVIs of this body shape ever made by Steiner as he was working on an all-MIDI version of this instrument with this body design (which later became known as the "MIDI EVI"). But this EVI is not a MIDI type EVI. The electronics in it are 100% analog taken from an older "Steinerphone" type EVI and transplanted by Steiner into this body. This EVI is plugged into the hand built Steinerphone "suitcase" synth made by Nyle Steiner (the yellow panel device you see in the lower right of the frame). This synth was made famous and was used extensively in recordings by Michael Brecker (including his epic "In A Sentimental Mood" recording).
This is a great composition by the immensely talented Stevie Wonder. I feel this is one of his finest and most clever compositions with quite a sophisticated chord structure, melody, and lyrics.

I just bought an EWI Solo from you this morning, and if I stick with it for a year or two I'm gonna get myself one of these bad boys.

Dude you're killing it!!! Awesome performance. Love seeing how your attention from the sheet slowly fades as you get more and more into the music. And the timbres are just *lovely*.

Great Matt one of my very favorite Stevie Wonder tunes. Your rendition is just great love the tone you are singing with your Steiner.

Oh yeah man!!! That is so smooth! Wish I could get that patch on my 5000 without an external module!

Thanks! The EWI4000s has similar sounds in the Patchman Music EWI4000s Volume 1 soundbank. But you will need to get an EWI4000s to use that soundbank.

Yeah...kinda figured that! Absolutely dig the organ and harmonica sounds on my 5000. The harmonica sound is pretty stupid close if you mimic the characteristics of the instrument. I've had harmonical players come up to me saying that they couldn't tell the difference from my 5000 to the real one! 1 point for me! ;) I keep seeing the 4000s's at pawn shops every so often for super cheap because some of the shop owners don't really know what they have! :) Gonna have to keep a careful eye out more closely!

Smooth analog type sounds are also included in my Apple ES2 and Propellerhead THOR softsynth wind controller soundbanks. This page will get you to info and demos of those banks... www.patchmanmusic.com/software.html

Awesome! Thanks a ton! So I'm watching this video a little bit closer and the part of the Steinerphone that you hold on your left hand, is that to mimic the third valve tuning like it is on trumpet? I noticed that you move it in coordination to when you push down the third valve on your right hand.

The left hand on an EVI selects the octave and half octave. Nothing else. More info on the EVI is here: www.patchmanmusic.com/faq

Does Patchman offer a guide or tutorial to setup a new EWI 4000s? I'm struggling trying to find the right settings for me. The knobs just aren't making sense to me, reading the manual helped but still trying to dial it in.

I think maybe you can if you buy the Yamaha VL70-M rack and his "Turbo chip"....

Sounds great. It's too bad about the dripping tap caught by the mic.

Thank you! Great video, how much money do you have to spend these days for such an instrument?

Steinerphone EVIs exactly like this are no longer in production. I can get you the same type of sounds with my EWI4000s Pro Pack and set it up for EVI fingering and pre-loaded with my upgraded EWI4000s soundbank (the same sound Bob Mintzer uses with the Yellowjackets). The price and details on that package are here: www.patchmanmusic.com/akai.html

Which patch number is that on your soundbank?

    • @PatchmanMusic
      @PatchmanMusic  6 років тому

This one was an actual analog patch that I came up with using the knobs on the Steiner analog synth shown in the video. But I've programmed that patch on many of the Patchman Music wind controller soundbanks. Look for Crumar EVI or Saw lead, or something like that on the many Patchman Music wind controller banks that are available. Email me at matt@patchmanmusic.com to discuss how you can get set up.
