I've been a Dead fan since 1971. Saw them at the Hollywood Bowl in 1972. Every time I watch and listen to one of their songs I love them more. 2018 now. I'm 74 and ready for more.
Oh the memories...weird what you remember during tours. I remember we stopped in Chicago in our trek to Alpine, I literally thought it was the cleanest city I'd ever seen. The smell of cows. I had my thumb crushed in our car door (ouch-still messed up all these years later)...the balloon chain (unbroken chain)...camping...burrito vendors...at least it didn't rain in '89 like it did in '88😄🎈 ⛓
Beautiful to see the "JOYEUX" when Brent is singing....What a thrill to hear the harmony, and the way he looks at Jerry..... Brent lived, AND keeps living through Like ......THIS.
Brilliant. Just fu*king brilliant. Brent’s voice and harmonies are like no other. Those two are so tuned into each other...god, I love and miss them both.
I could watch this forever just to watch Jerry and Brent's connection during it. Brent's smile at 4:43!!! OMG Tears, goosebumps... Just seeing them all soooo happy. boy. Just man...... So good!
What an indescribable, masterful work. My being is encapsulated with Jerry and Brent's love, spirit and soul laid out for all to see. It's absolutely heartbreaking to have lost these legends. Eternally, GRATEFUL (~);}
Alpine is amazing! I live very close to STL and the STL shows were always great too (apart from “THAT ONE” haha). Deercreek was and is like mecca for my family. My parents saw a lot of Soldier Field shows, I was too young for those (but did see Jerry twice before he died, once as a baby and once when I was four and do have memories of that show…and so blessed and never take that for granted), but, I’ve been to Wrigley for Dead & Co every year since 2017 and those ALWAYS rock! Last year was legendary, we all said that at the time, it felt like seeing one of those epic and historical shows. I’m from Illinois, near St. Louis like I said so that but also being too young but so my parents were huge Deadheads, life revolved around the Dead in my family. Still does. But so even them never got to see any of the amazing and historic East Coast shows or West Coast shows but they toured all over the Midwest before Jerry died and we still do now for Dead & Co. Grateful til death for them!
Brent was like the cute little Puppy Dog, Jerry was the warm fuzzy Teddy Bear....THEY WERE.SO GREAT TOGETHER.....LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE THIS...Brent was the BEST singer the band ever had too....and a KICKASS keyboard player to boot.......
I was standing stage level dead center, as per usual. I had forgot that Jerry had problems with Wolf in the middle of this song and switched to Tiger. The 1st night Jerry came out after drumz with his back turned to us. He was tweaking his amp and playing some notes, when he turned around, WE WERE FLOORED!!! He had a big shit eating grin on his face and a white strat that was lite up, that at the time, was glowing like a harp from heaven. Good times at our childhood stompin' grounds. Miss you Jerry and Brent.
My god I love The Dead. Brent Mydland was the shit. I love every single thing about The Dead and everyone involved but Brent was one of my favs. A frockin great cat.
Yes, agree!! It’ll be 30 years next month since Brent left us...and 25 years next month since we lost Jerry...so so soooooo tragic, but so so soooooo grateful for the amazing memories, not to mention that we can now watch endless shows thanks to technology and UA-cam!!!! Who’d a thunk it back then?? All I had at that time was a collection of pretty crappy bootlegs...and I was thankful for that! But now? To be able to see them and have it all be so much better quality??? Wow. Just wow!!!
I agree with you 100% about the boys, but Brent Mydland was phenomenal!!! Sorry to just comment on this out of the blue, and so long after it was posted. Have a both a STELLAR & "GRATE" rest of the night, and an even better day, Jonathan Cross, my fellow Deadhead brother!!! No offense meant in anything that I may have said!!!
This started off as a reply to what @kati Shuman said about how beautiful the Jerry/Brent relationship was but I felt inspired to share the story as its own comment. And seriously, this is my first time ever commenting and before that I’d only replied to what someone else three other times; all about Dear Mr. Fantasy/Hey Jude; the first two last night about the nasty amazing Mr. Fantasy/Hey Jude at Wrigley last year and just now replying to what Kati said but so here it is: Hit the nail on the head! There’s another video/version of Mr. Fantasy/Hey Jude while Brent was with us and it makes me tear up, how beautiful you could tell the bond was with him and Jerry. Like, the whole song, Jerry is just facing him, both looking at each other and looking so happy..Ugh. Its beautiful, gives me chills too! I’ll be 36 this year but lucky enough to be raised by two absolute Deadheads and got to see Jerry twice before he died. Really, really little for the first but I think I was four for that second show and I do have a few memories of that show. And I realize how blessed I am for all of that and never, ever take it for granted. My pa died way too young and in a tragic, messed up way…their honeymood was a Dead show and the picture of my mom and dad, my sister and myself all after they got married at the courthouse, before they ditched me and my sister with the grandparents to take off for Deercreek lol its such a wonderful picture. The tape collection and our beloved picture of Jerry are in the background. The Dead were life for us growing up. Still are. So blessed for that. Tearing up now just saying all this. And this is seriously like only my third ever comment on youtube, always just lurked lol ugh sorry for the crazy long story and comment, just up late and sentimental and emotional haha but thank you for inspiring me to say all this, it was just gonna be about Brent and Jerry, I swear haha but it evolved
No need to apologize! I love Deadhead tour stories! I’ll be 36 on sept 6 (same birthday as Roger Waters)..thanks for sharing! And hey don’t be hesitant to comment more. It’s inspiring to see folks talk about their musical experiences Dead wise or not (although Deadheads’ stories seem to be more fun/Interesting haha). I was born in 1987 and my parents sadly were not Heads, and I never got to see Jerry but I have been able to see the surviving members quite a lot over the years, except for Donna, for that of which I’m very grateful for indeed..and again thanks so much for sharing your story! Cheers from Nashville! ❤NFA❤~RRR~
like it was yesterday, hard to believe 2 decades have passed........the wheel keeps turning and u cant slow it down! Brent was such inspiration! Dido what the guy said below me! I'm blessed to have seen him hold the room.
Ugh same! I just can’t get enough, he such a beacon of talent, soul and love and you could tell he loved being a part of it and knew how substantial that was, to be a part of it all. Just amazing!
No, not just those two, I think. What we have here (ladies and gentlemen) is a cohesive band of artisans collectively banging out a fabulous tune, and making it look easy, yeah?
U miss Brent more? I miss them both of course, but Captain Trips steered the ship from the beginning. If we could get one back it would be Jerry for me...✌
@@bluecollar825 of course I miss both I still cry tears when I watch a UA-cam video because I miss them so much but Brent was and will always be my very favorite musician out of all musicians so yeah I just love how soulful he was
@@michaelpaquette4245 I didn't mean to sound confrontational, if you took it that way I apologize. GRATEFUL DEAD FOREVER!!! Once its in you, you can't get it out!!!🤣✌
@@michaelpaquette4245 but certain versions of Jerry's tunes have brought me to tears, Standing On The Moon, So Many Roads, etc.. Only time I wept with Brent is THE epic Blow Away, if you a Brent fan you know the one...✌
Jerry had trouble with the wolf on that tour same thing happened in deer creek. But he got it worked out for the Hampton Warlocks shows fucking 89' what a sunburst!!!
He started using Wolf again with a Roland Synth Pickup installed, also did this with Fender Strats. Typical used in 2nd set during drumz/space Eventually a similar version of this tech was added to Rosebud, his last Irwin.
OK. This is 7/18/89. I was at one of the Alpine Valley shows that year and could have sworn that they played this. However, the set list for that night does not include "It Looks Like Rain" which I could have also sworn that they played (as it was obvious that it was going to rain). I am thinking that I was there on 7/19/89 when that song is on the playlist and Dear Jude is not. After the show was over we had a vague idea that our car was parked in a cornfield... When we found it the car was stuck in mud. Was that 7/19?

not sure why but I like the shows I see here from the late 80s and 1990..the best.....I saw the band myself 3 times in the late 70s and early 80s and mid 80s..loved the shows...then I saw Ratdog, not the best show in the world without Jerry....
Look, I love the Dead music, but I always get attacked when I say they couldn't sing in key (Brent could though). The end of this has 5 guys singing in 5 completely different keys haha. Still great though.
Jerry Smitherson did you ever go to a show? Who cares if they weren’t technically perfect. They were the greatest thing in music during my life time. Mozart , The Who , The Grateful Dead. Three of the best moments in music history.
Im looking for a video of Brent having a bit of a breakdown during Hey jude fantasy in either 89 or 90 in the Milwaukee or chicago area. I Love Brent with all his warts. The Jude/Fantasy Im thinking of he was def in a little freakout mode over a woman. If you were there you know what Im talkin about. Please e mail me at matthewdavisy2@netscape.net if you know of the video or show. He was a CUSSIN up a storm. Damn he rocked.
Alpine Rocks !! This was just 1 of My
Favorite Shows, I have spent Many Great times Here.
Brent was the man. He had such incredible energy when he was playing. His voice blows me away every time.
So true, so true, so true...
That he was brother. Brent had such soul, that you could easily hear in both his playing, and especially in his singing!!!
❤️ Brent forever ❤️

Jerry's guitar 🎸 wouldn't work. Brent seamlessly filled in the space until Jerry could switch guitars... What a Masterpiece.
That was freaking great just smashing the keys perfectly 🤙
I was so into the music, I hadn't noticed that. Thanks Irish-Dude!
Nothing sends chills up my spine more than listening to The Dead.
