This isn’t Jazz and Jerry wasn’t a jazz musician… but you’re right that this music is nowhere near outside Jerry’s capabilities or genre . It’s the easiest groove to jam to in fact . Just a few chords and syncopated drums . It’s simple .

People never credit Jerry as a good jazz player when truth is he could play jazz very well. He loved jazz and this is displayed mainly on the Blues For Allah GD album.

What a beautiful melodic conversation among such talented musicians! The unspoken communication between the players is inspiring; when you reach a certain level, the groove just shows you the way! And Jerry's guitar tone on the first solo he plays is as close to perfect as can be, while Carlos gives a master class on how much can be done to color his tone with subtle tweaks of the guitar volume knob. Brilliant!

CT... Chester Thompson on keys. Remarkable. And, Carlos strokes those six strings til they drip with emotion, til they cry as only he can.

Jerry was in the best health he had been in for so many years at this point. He had a few years of sobriety and his head was in a good place. You can see it reflected in his prodigious playing.

What a show. Ruben Blades a great musician and political force. The way he honors his fellow musicians show the class RB always had and still has. Great show. Wish I was there.

If some people played guitar and understood what is actually happening here they would then understand how good and unique jerry is .....the way he plays in his own shows is just so clever and it's his own style.

Carlos had a blast at 10-27-91 (first show after Bill Graham died tragically; Halloween Run). Gary Duncan from QMS showed too. I'll never forget that Aiko > Hey Mona jam session. After a smoking China>Rider>Samson & Ship of Fools that is, lol.

From talking to a friend who was at that show, Duncan clearly won THAT shootout. He smoked Carlos AND Jerry. I wish I'd been there!

@@igrowhigher I was at all four of the Oakland Halloween run & Duncan practically blew Carlos off the stage. Jerry's smile was epic. That's why Duncan came back for 10/31 & made that second set what it was. I was on Jerry's side on two hits of great acid & extremely close. Waited in line on my ass for hours to get those general admission seats. One of the best of the 80 or shows I saw. That Kesey rap with Phil thumping away. What a setlist. Gary Duncan's Dark Star licks were sublime. The energy was cosmic. Very healing evening after losing Bill so tragically. "Werewolves" encore was the shit!!!! Obviously, much better than JGB 10/31/92 Oakland. I saw every bay area show in '91 except for 12/31. 12/30 was better anyway. Both Shoreline runs were also superb. I loved Springs 5/12/91 soooo much. The breakout of C.C. Rider>Train To Cry show. I was a senior in High School & flew up from Diego for that run (Thanks Mom!) Did most of Summer '91 & saw Eel River & Squaw too. 1991 was such a blast. IMO, the band's last hoorah. No one could ever replace Brent...and Jerry knew it. Vince sounded like he was playing a cheesy Casio.

Of all the great guitarists out there my top three are Carlos Santana, Jerry Garcia and Jeff Beck. They all follow their own muse.
