You probably dont care but if you guys are stoned like me during the covid times then you can stream all the latest movies on instaflixxer. I've been watching with my brother for the last couple of weeks =)
I'm a huge fan of LoopBack. If you incorporate "Audio Hijack" on top of LoopBack you get even more flexibility and the ability to add real time plugins like compression/noise reduction. It's amazing for live streaming! There's another video idea for you 👍
I like the whole room cam/shot. Give a nice idea of your recording setup in reality, not just your previous explanations of things. Your channel has a very welcoming vibe to begin with, but that shot really makes a viewer feel like they're a part of the recording.
Did I say I love Tom...I didn’t? LOVE THIS GUY! thanks for the Loopback video I’ve been using it for almost 7 months with Ecamm. You you should see the amount of “virtual” wires we have plug in for our show. Thanks again.
by the way thank you so much Tom for sharing all of your knowledge and insight. we know you invested hours and hours trying to figure it out and then putting it all together in all of your nice and very helpful videos. highly appreciated! you do are doing a great job and you teach with passion and so many get to benefit from your gifts... just had to get that off my chest. personally i really love the fonts you are using haha
Hey Tom! You actually don't need to set up original audio every time. But to make that happen, you need to click the little down arrow next to the "Turn On Original Audio" button and then select your loopback audio source. Once you do that, Zoom will remember that going forward. Hope this helps!
If you click on the arrow next to the original sound button you can choose to always use original sound with a particular mic do you don't have to press the button each time
Thanks so much for posting this Tom as I was wondering how you were getting sound through on your Zoom setup with Ecamm Live and wondered if I'd need to buy a mixer in order to do it. I've really appreciated your posts this year as I've been dong some teaching online too.
Glad it helped! It all started when I was trying to play videos for my classes using Ecamm. Everything was good on my end, but they couldn't hear the audio.
I'm not sure why you had to even bring in Ecamm audio if you're using the Rodecaster. Couldn't you just bring in the Rodecaster + desktop audio via USB and bypass Loopback altogether? Sorry, I am looking into audio routing for my mac mini. :)
You can use the RCP, it if you’re trying to get Ecamm SFX or audio from a video playing in Ecamm into Zoom, then it won’t work (you could run it through the RCP via USB, but since Zoom needs USB mic minus, you won’t hear anything in Zoom). There might be another way around it, but this is what’s worked for me. Plus I like making the little nodes in Loopback 😁
It took me a while, but it got recommended so much that I had to finally check it out. Plus I kept playing videos in Ecamm for my classes that no one could hear 🤦🏻♂️
I really appreciate your info about the permissions step necessary to use Loopback. That could have been scary. Looks like a really cool app with lots of utility.
I have a whole video on it! ua-cam.com/video/i3ZuTF2J8qE/v-deo.html But I'm using the Blue Compass now because Heather wanted the PSA1 for her office. 😁
I've somehow built up a nice little collection of mics, so I switch between them for fun. Each one gives something a little different and it's really fun to play around with that.
Great video Tom! You can also use NDI to route audio from Ecamm or OBS to Zoom, Teams etc. It's free to download. I use the same thing. (Also not affiliated!)
Thank you! For Windows, I’m not really sure. There might be some witchcraft you can pull with OBS, and you might even be able to accomplish something similar with Rode’s Connect app.
Great videos. I was wondering if you could provide some guidance or suggestions. We host several zoom meetings where we apply time limits for speakers. To notify the speakers we ring a soft bell via loopback. Unfortunately, the bell doesn't always ring through clearly especially if the speaker isn't taking pauses. Do you have any possible suggestions or solutions on how we could have sound effect to notify speakers? Thank you!
That’s a really smart idea! I’d recommend going into your Zoom audio settings and checking that “original audio” is enabled. This will remove Zoom’s processing. Which is likely trying to remove the chime sound because it thinks it’s unwanted.
@@tombuck Thank you for the quick feedback. We try use original sound when we remember. Does zoom only allow one audio source at a time? Was wondering if it gets cancelled out as the audio switches. Thanks again for your informative videos!
Awesome video Tom! As usual! Your video gave me an idea how I can route my DAW outputs thourgh the Zoom meeting without using Loopback app sincemy audio interface Audient EVO8 already has that loopback capabilities, Thanks!
Very interesting. But why is this necessary? Can’t you simply send the output from the Rodecaster straight to Zoom as a source? Why do you need to include the audio from Ecamm when there isn’t any audio to send? (And for that matter, why on earth DOESN’T Ecamm send audio out?)
As far as I know, there isn't a free alternative that's as fully featured. Some apps that come with audio interfaces and microphones have basic functionality, but Loopback is the most robust and easiest to use (there's definitely a reason why it costs money).
Tom, what are you using to record your screen? Thanks for all of your work. Your videos are part of my Thursday lunch breaks because then I get the benefit of the comments.
Sounding "good" has a lot to do with how you're setting your levels and any processing that's being added in. Speaking very broadly, keep your gain and levels as low as possible while still getting a signal that's loud enough. This will help reduce noise and hiss. Beyond that, things like compression and noise gates can help too if you have the ability to add them. But live duets are tough since there's always a bit of a delay and timing will be crucial.
Great topic! I tried to install it but it was impossible. I even got help from the IT-support from work and they couldnt come around it. They tried with an older Mac and there was no problem. The problem is in the new M1 with the latest update.
Hmm, strange. I did it with my M1 Mac Mini and haven't had any problems. I think I had to read the instructions several times before I felt comfortable with it. If I'd known I was going to make a video about it, I would've recorded that whole process.
Confused - why not using Rodecaster as an input directly in zoom ? Ecamm is routed into Rodecaster via USB (Slider), or what am I missing ? Or is this to demo if you don't have a rode caster then ecamm via loopback is the way?
Good question. 1. This works if you don’t have a Rodecaster 2. Even if you do have a Rodecaster, Zoom won’t get the audio from Ecamm (so if you play videos or sound effects, no one will hear it). And since it’s a Zoom call, you probably don’t want to run ecamm into the Rodecaster because it’ll create an echo if anyone on Zoom speaks.
Uhm. I’ve ran into this problem a few weeks ago in an online class - they haven’t heard the video I played. BUT when I switched the speaker too to Rodecaster in Zoom (not just the Mic), all was good. If it’s good that you have to put on a headphone to hear the class. :D
Well, actually there might be some difference, as I use OBS for virtual cam and tweaked everything through that - but I want to give a try to Ecamm as well. You’re loving it too much Tom to resist. :D
can you explain how you looped back the system audio back into the Rodecaster? I’m trying to use my Rodecaster , uad Apollo twin x (for the mic effects) and ecamm. It’s tough. Spent hours trying to route everything. I don’t want to spend 100 if I can route it in myself. I think I’m missing something. I’m almost there to get all this to work right. But then again maybe I need to buy the loop back. Hate to waste the money if there’s a workaround. Can’t find any videos with this set up please and thanks if you can help.been a fan for a while !
Tom: Question on another subject. Recently two iPhone 6s Plus phones became available to use as cameras with my ATEM MIni Pro switcher. (I upgraded to two new phones for my wife and me). Could you please demonstrate how these phones can be integrated into my video system? Thanks, Hank
This is a really random question but you would be a good person to ask. If I finish editing a video in final cut pro and save the raw video files to an external hard drive, can I delete them from my macbook drive and still scrub through the finished final cut pro timeline? I like to keep my finished editing timelines but I don’t have room to keep saving the raw footage to my macbook. Thanks!
Hey Brady! If you move the actual Final Cut library along with your raw files to an external hard drive, then you can open that library on any computer and have the project files in tact.
@@tombuck Oh wow! Just double checking though... I still need the raw footage to run the project, right? It’s not like I can just save the project and reopen the it on my MacBook on its own, right? Thanks in advance!
Well I don’t use Ecamm so I have no need but with what you described when Apple does a .1 software update like what they just did to 11.3 those updates could break those changes and you may have to do it again and Loopback has to keep up with this. So @TomBuck what I’m trying to say don’t update software until loopback has tested the new software. Hope that makes since

@@tombuck I meant in your video around 5:88, you said Ecamm is showing nothing. I think the reason is that your only use your mic to test it. Hi Tom. Does loop back also take advantage of the latency settings for audio? I have the same set up as yourself but seem to be about 3 frames off. I can fix this in Ecamm but the latency is still there in Zoom/Teams/Bluejeans, etc.
You dont need to add Ecamm coz all of sound controlled by rode caster pro , this is only for the Ecamm ,but for ZOOM or other inputs such as SAFARI ,CHROM ,... you need to add them from adding new Device and then start adding them as a sources
