Installing an aftermarket cabin air filter in a 2004-2012 GMC Canyon or Chevy Colorado

- There's no cabin air filter on these trucks. There's just a big hole. I got tired of crap getting stuck in the fan and so I designed my own adaptor to accept paper air filters. You can buy the adaptor here: ebay.us/x7ohx0
Or you can print your own, models are here: www.printables.com/model/6561...
If you need replacement filters, I've confirmed fitment for the following:
TYC 2-pack ($13): amzn.to/3h8mUCZ
Purolator One 2-pack ($20): amzn.to/3A4sY8c
ATP 2-pack ($14): amzn.to/2U9mtjL
If you ordered after July 25 2021, I widened the filter housing to accept the following (in addition to above):
ACDelco Gold 2-pack ($19): amzn.to/3kTRweL
AirTechnik w/Activated Carbon 2-pack ($15) : amzn.to/2VcF92D
Premium Guard 2-pack ($14): amzn.to/3iLoonj
Ecogard 2-pack ($13): amzn.to/3kaRduk
Version 2 was released March 14 2022. Now you can insert the filter at a downward angle, and then drop the driver side down and secure it with just a single clip. Should be a lot easier to install for all the large-handed people out there.
I get a small portion of the sale if you use my links above. If you just want to make your own using a metal screen, you can see my old (unlisted) video here: • Making A Cabin Air Fil... - Авто та транспорт
You can buy the adaptor here: ebay.us/x7ohx0

FRAM Fresh Breeze Cabin Air Filter, CF10747 2-pack ($25) Amazon can be bought at AutoZone but was closer to ($32)
has Arm & Hammer and carbon.
The fact you have done all the measuring inside that little area and perfected it must have been changing. Bravo.
Just installed the version 2 on my 2004 Colorado. Very straight forward. I used a piece of cardboard over my engine and crawled on top to get access. Not to bad! Thanks for the design. The one clip made it easy to install.
Mike Allumbaugh. I received and installed your cabin filter holder mechanism.. I sealed it in place with calking. I couldn't use the locking mechanism as my arms were to big to reach in far enough to tighten it.
I also couldn't find a 15 year old in my neighborhood with small arms. It was a bit of a trick to get it in place but I gotter. Took me the better part of two and a half hours to remove wipers. plastic etc. and put it back. I know but I'm 73 and just had a knee replaced. That's my excuse anyway and I'm stickin to it.
June 12 0222.
Installed my ver 2 today. Good thing I keep my engine clean as I had to climb onto it to install. Very happy with the product.
I bought one of these from your eBay store. Really happy with it and glad I now have a filter because I used to get so much dust in the cab. But like you said, wow what a pain to install lol. Not enough room to get your arm into the intake. Took me laying over the engine bay and ripping up my arm for 20 mins or so but I got it in. I ran a bead of silicone around the seal and let it dry into a "gasket" then used the bolt and holder to install it.
I have a 2004 chevy colorado, and just had to replace the blower motor. So many leafs, twigs and dirt, it caused the fan to burn up and the resistor. Now I know why it randomly spits debris in my eyes while driving. Gonna have to get this, thank you for designing it.
Dude I got to this video cuz I looked up how change the cabin filter not realizing it doesn’t have one. Makes sense now why I’ve replaced a blower and there’s always leaves rustling around in there and blows an insane amount of dirt in my face if I don’t run the fans for a few days. This is my secondary truck so it sits and collects a lot of debris from the trees outside 😅
Thanks, admittedly a problem in my 2007 Canyon SL…..MUST consider adding a Filter,as I have, only replaced the “ Resistor Assembly Plug “ ( one unit: Unfortunately all “O’REILY had was Chinese made” ) so far………
Just got mine in the mail (version 2 with 1 clip) can't wait to install it! (first want to show it to my big bro, he's never seen something 3-D printed up close)
Just got my kit installed this evening. I’ve got big arms so the far clip was a no go, but filter seems relatively secure with the one clip 👍🏻
You put a lot of thinking into this. Kudos to you for your effort!
Squirrel made a nest in mine too. I added your filter and I'm very happy I did
Installed a few days ago. Its difficult to get in there, but it works! Thank you
Happy to help!
Great info and excellent installation tutorial!!
This is genius idea, love it
Man... excellent work... !
misterio resuelto... MUCHAS GRACIAS POR EL VIDEO!
Cool video. Will look at my 2008 after work and probably order one this week. Thank you
Hi Erici, do you have any EVAP fuel system issues with your 2008? I am getting a P0103 code and can't figure out why my cylinder #1 is misfiring. I've changed Ann related components.
@@chrisaalexander no codes on my truck currently
Dude.... I had to take a huge double take when I saw you on this video. I stopped with my mouth open, in shock..... You are my doppelganger... So much so, that I got confused when I first saw you standing at the truck. 😅
You sound very handsome!
Awesome! Very helpful thanks!
I've been looking for mine on 08 canyon couldn't find the sob thanks now I know 🤓😁😁
That is so fucking cool dude I want one. I reeeally wish it was under 30 dollars though. Well worth it in any case
chevy needs a cabin air filter for you know just common sense but also becuase the ac resistor get really hot and relays on the ac to keep it cool and I replace my ac resistor and a bunch of small leaves came out of the palce where i pulled the ac resistor out of
nice! Yeah, why would a company NOT add a consumable accessory to their product? Especially one that's fairly standard in the industry. Excellent product you made there!
Dude you live in Rochester?? I live in Buffalo!....I have 2012 Colorado and interested in what I find where the cabin air filter attachment will go
I wish I could just buy the 3d print stl file for the adapter
bought the adaptor, now I just need the truck
Where did you buy it ??????.
Where did. You get the. Adapter. Help
@@tommartines5842 - through the ebay link in the description of this video
Did you get the truck?
I bought the adapter and installed it on my 2005 Colorado Z71 - I couldn’t be happier, especially with so much smoke from wildfires this year. Just wondering, how often do you change the filter?
I'd probably suggest checking it in 6 months and deciding from there-it probably won't need it that often but it entirely depends on where and how much you drive it and your personal preference. Happy I could help you out!
Where can I find/buy a new plastic trim piece? Awesome vid
ebay.us/x7ohx0
Edit: oh wait did you mean the trim that goes under the wipers that came with the truck? Here's an aftermarket one amzn.to/44wk0PU
Do you have a video showing how you removed the whipers/windshield cover of the H3?
No, I don't recall it being difficult though. Here's a video of someone else doing it: ua-cam.com/video/3xGnCYCkHZA/v-deo.html feel free to ask questions if you get stuck!
Where was the camera angle at 5:34 taken from? I tried to look under my glove box but could not find the hole.
I removed the blower fan just so I could get the video-no reason to do that to install the filter though.
How in the hell do you get the windshield wiper arms off the splined motor studs? I ve tried damn near every trick in the book! Jury rigged pullers ,heat ,you name it!
Wow I'm sorry you're having so much trouble! Mine fought back a little but I was able to get them free by pushing the arm DOWN (and then wiggling) instead of only pulling up, since it's offset and was causing it to bind. Does that make sense? I'd imagine letting penetrating oil work for 24 hours would make a big difference too?
Out of curiosity, is there anyway to change the design by keeping the top two clip on pieces being permanent but then having a short side of the box click in. You would install the filter by sliding in horizontally instead of dropping in? Still interested in getting one but have larger hands.
I didn't like the slide approach as it didn't make enough "pressure" on the filter to keep air from going around it. That being said I might take a stab at redesigning it once the weather warms up a bit.
I just finished redesigning it and have posted version 2 on eBay. Now you can insert the filter at a downward angle, and then drop the driver side down and secure it with just a single clip. Should be a lot easier to install for all the large-handed people out there. Thanks!
I have a 2008 colorado. When I start my truck the ac has that mildew smell to it. Do you know how I can get rid of this smell? Thanks.
Firstly you need to clean your truck-make sure the entire cavity under your windshield wipers is clean of any debris (leaves, sticks, bugs, etc) and then vacuum your interior as well as you can. Bonus points if you have access to a carpet shampooer. Second, I've had great results with an ozone generator like this one amzn.to/3l8W8ga. You'll want to put your truck on a battery charger, turn the hvac on in recirculate mode (engine doesn't need to be running), and then get the ozone generator going inside the truck for at least a couple hours. The ozone will kill mold/mildew. It can really irritate your lungs, however, so be sure to air the truck out for a few more hours after you're done. Have fun!
Did you use abs if yes does it smells abs inside the car if left under the sun?
no
------------ANYONE KNOW IF 2012 Colorado is the same config? I thought cabin filter was behind glovebox. That's the one I want to replace.
As long as it's the same gen 1 body style this will fit
Where do I find the adapter along with the paper filter. Thanks
ebay.us/x7ohx0
Where did u get the aftermarket air filter kit at??
ebay.us/x7ohx0
Any chance you are willing to share your CAD or STL part files?
No, sorry, I had a bad experience with that in the past where people started competing with me and shipping inferior prints. Some guy did design his own clone on thingiverse though if you wanted to try it.
@adam Davenport what fuse was that? the blown fuse?
It's been a few years but I don't remember it being difficult to find. Probably labeled BLWR on the diagram?
@@adamdport thnak you Adam . much appreciated
What kind of material did you use ?
petg plastic
What material is the adapter made of? Whats plastic and whats metal?
The only metal is the bolt and the nut inside the v-wedge that it threads into.
@@adamdport is there any kind of gasket involved?
@@MichaelOfRohan no. you can make your own with a bead of silicone or foam or whatever you want, but I don't think it's necessary or beneficial
Can i buy the stl file instead to print my own?
No, sorry, I had a bad experience with that in the past where people started competing with me and shipping fragile prints. Some guy did design his own clone on thingiverse though if you wanted to try it.
Can you get a k&n filter for that
I think VF1016 should fit but I can't find anyone that has it in stock so unfortunately I can't verify. If you try one would you let me know?
One more thing: Project Farm did a video on air filters and concluded that K&N didn't work very well, worth a watch ua-cam.com/video/sJ3L-E-ufYo/v-deo.html
@@adamdport Don't need to see the video. Just go to any auto parts store and look at that K&N display all of them seem to have. You know, the one with the ping pong ball? Ever notice how dirty that ball is being supported by air "filtered" by the K&N. LOL!
How does the filter hold up to moisture?
Do you mean humidity? What do you mean by moisture
@adamdport humidity yes, but the rain run off that comes down on that area during rain. Have you ever inspected the element after a couple days of rain?
@@cobaltss0720 if water ever got that high, it would drip over the edge and get into the blower fan and onto the passenger side floor. Keep it out of the river and you won't have issues
@@adamdport sure if it was an excessive amount. Was just curious how it held up.
@@adamdport thought processing being if a leaf can, I'm sure a drop of water can.
aye buddy i'm doing a video highlighting this product and i wanted to reach out and work with you on a design change/improvement. i know you've changed the design once since i've purchased but i wanted to see of you were came from one more to make it perfect. HMU
What did you have in mind?
@@adamdport might be better to talk on the phone but have you considered making the tray more like a cassette style so the filter slides in from the driver side?
@@BadlandIndustries I'd need to make the opening loose enough to slide a filter in there, and the looseness might let air go around the filter. That's my thinking anyway, maybe it wouldn't matter. In a perfect world I could line it with foam so the foam provides the seal but that's something else to assemble, rip, wear out, etc. Bare plastic should outlive the truck. Does that make sense and did I understand your idea?
@@adamdport any filtering is lightyears ahead of gm's design. lmk man id love to buy one off you with the cassette style. i could barely get the second clip in. with the cassette style you could have semi circle tabs holding the filter down and use the same style clip on the end to keep it from sliding out.
I love my '05 Colorado, but man, GM sure went cheap on these things😠
