    In today's baseball sports talk video, the Breaker Bros Sammy and Omar express their frustration with the MLB's blackout restrictions for local baseball teams and discuss how the league is proving how they prioritize profits over the loyal fan's experience with their favorite teams. I haven't watched my home team play in over a decade because of blackouts. Im not paying for a cable package. Ever. Full stop.
    That means I can't pass on my love of the game to my grandkids, and THAT is the true travesty. Baseball in the US WILL DIE if the current generation of sports fans can't watch their home baseball team! It really is that cut and dry.

    I pay for MLB-TV, so as far as I'm concerned, I should be able to watch ANY game I want to. I don't think MLB gives a crap about the fans. Money is what it's all about. They've ruined the game with their super-balls, ghost runners in extra innings, playing games in downpours, etc. anyway.

    I wish my husband would boycott mlb until they get rid of blackouts. It’s absolutely ridiculous. Sunday, we signed up for one of the MLB.TV packages only to find out there were blackouts even if you PAID for a service, so we canceled it. Then we tried to get a VPN yesterday to see if we could work around it. But it was a pain to do with his MacBook and he wound up giving up on it. So today is his birthday and for one of his presents he is currently working on getting directv streaming. It is a shame MLB is doing this. Last time we had directv it was $150 a month, so that’s $1800 a year just to watch baseball. I have ad free UA-cam and that’s all I watch now, and he mostly watches Amazon prime or Hulu when he isn’t watching sports.

      Thanks for sharing your example! This is exactly the core issue for baseball fans across the country. The games shouldn't be so hard to watch, especially when customers pay for the MLB package. How does the MLB expect to grow the game to a wider fanbase when they've implemented contractual roadblocks to watch even the local teams? It's really a shame!

    If you have an Android device use GPS simulator to make it look like you are anywhere in the country and you can watch the game no matter what your true location is. It's simple I've been doing it for years with MLB I'm an oriole fan in Atlanta but when we play here I cannot watch the games. When I'm in Maryland I can't watch the games unless I have a cable TV subscription there GPS simulator allows me to make it look like I am in Atlanta and can watch the game no flash no muss.

      Awesome tip and thanks for sharing! It's a great trick to get around the MLB Blackouts, but for the average fan who isn't as tech savvy the MLB has created so many roadblocks to simply view their favorite local teams everyday. With so many exclusive contracts across the country, it has made it difficult to do so without all of the extra GPS simulators and VPN work arounds to enjoy watching the MLB as seamlessly as possible. Thanks for the comment!

    The Regional Sports Network contracts are worth Millions of Dollars per season for the teams so it would be tough to end their exclusively to in market baseball games. Currently only 12 MLB teams have an in market direct Streaming Subscription option. Hopefully this can be extended to more teams in future seasons. Football is played weekly so it is easy to get national contracts. Baseball played daily needs Regional Channels or Regional Sports Networks.

  • @EJL8888
    @EJL8888 3 місяці тому +1

    They are extremely frustrating and make little sense in many situations, however you are over simplifying the problem. When a company like Fox Sports pays to broadcast a local game, they want the viewership for advertising and to get an ROI by leveraging that with the Cable TV provider. If people there can circumvent watching on that channel by using the MLB app, then the value of selling the games to networks would plummet. The main issue I have is there are areas in which you dont even have the option to watch on a local cable provider and you get blacked out and it often covers several teams, not just the “home team.”

    • @BreakerBrosBaseball
      @BreakerBrosBaseball  3 місяці тому

      Great points! You're spot on about the leveraging the Cable TV provider ROI, but it's ridiculous that customers pay a premium for MLB app and still get blacked out. If you are paying for access to watch "every game" we feel that you should get access to every game, no matter where your GPS locator indicates you are at that very moment. The NFL Sunday Ticket package shows every game to the fans that pay the money for it. There are no NFL game blackouts even though the local cable networks are also showing the same game. If the NFL can figure it out why can't the MLB? 🤔

The White Sox on NBC Sports Chicago & the Reds on Bally Sports Ohio & Bally Sports Indiana are only available on a big bundle of channels. Bally Sports Plus does not include the Reds bit the Pavers are included in Bally Sports Plus. Currently only 12 MLB teams have a direct streaming subscription option. Hopefully this can be extended to more than 12 teams on the future.

    I lost interest in MLB this year when new paywalls and blackouts arrived. But I will watch the Mariners if they make the playoffs and are on National TV. Do the sales and marketing people really want to price out their middle class fan base?
    The list of competing sporting interests this year is quite numerous and makes MLB completely irrelevant. Currently the Euro and Copa America tournaments are ongoing, the Stanley Cup and NBA playoffs just concluded, Wimbleton, Tour de France, and the Olympics are coming up, then the NFL. I don't miss what use to be the national pastime at all due to the new business model.

  • @AV57
    @AV57 4 місяці тому +2

    MLB is currently trying to implement 2 different business models at the same time, which is massively hurting interest in the sport for the sake of short-term MLB profits. The first (and older model) viewed fans as the primary customer of baseball. Ticket sales, vending sales, and merchandise sales used to be how MLB teams made their money while TV/radio was really more of just a way to commercialize the industry. It was a way to convince you to come to the ballpark and spend your money on the team. Teams would also capitalize on ad revenue by selling physical and radio ad space, based upon fan viewership. Ad revenue was really just a quick, easy way to make a little extra money off the top, but it wasn't done to a point where it would annoy fans to the point of not going to the ballpark, because that would be losing a dime to gain a penny in the long run.
    At some point (probably in the 90s), MLB teams started to negotiate TV and ad deals that were so lucrative that owners started to adjust their focus to please advertisers and cable companies over fans. The real problem, however, is that there was really no adjustment to the way teams priced the experience at the ballpark or the way fans could tune into the game away from the ballpark. If fan viewership is merely going to be used as a leveraging tool for MLB to get billions of dollars a year from TV providers and corporate advertisers, fine, make it easy for fans to tune it or get into the ballpark. But MLB refuses to 100% move to that model in a way that I think the NFL has. They want the best of both worlds: they want to treat fans as a product to be sold to advertisers and TV providers, but also to treat them as customers whenever fans want to comfortably enjoy the game.

    • @BreakerBrosBaseball
      @BreakerBrosBaseball  4 місяці тому +1

      Very insightful comment! You're spot on with how the focus today seems to be appeasing local TV and streaming contracts first over the loyal fans across the country. We know television viewing habits today have become much more fragmented than in year's past, but that should not be an excuse for the MLB not to find a universal viewing solution without Blackouts for all MLB team fan bases. Getting penalized by living in certain geographies is ridiculous and hurts the game's growth. Fantasy football is so popular because fans are easily able to follow players across teams without issue as part of the NFL package. The MLB makes this successful NFL model impossible to replicate with all of the blackouts restrictions, so how can fans stay similarly connected with multiple players/teams across the league when there are so many barriers to do so? Let us just turn on the TV and watch the games. It's should be that simple.

  • @brucesmith9144
    @brucesmith9144 4 місяці тому +2

    This is why minor league baseball has become popular. It’s affordable and there are many ballparks around in the country outside of the big league cities. You can actually afford to take a family to a game and buy concessions, just like baseball used to be.

    • @BreakerBrosBaseball
      @BreakerBrosBaseball  4 місяці тому

      Agree 💯! Plus the astronomical contracts now at 10 years plus are pricing average baseball fans/families out of the major league ballparks. When you add the blackouts in, it's getting harder than ever to grow in love with your local teams on a day to day basis.

      Great question. Tough to say if there is anyone in the majors today to reach a billion dollar contract, but agree with you that we'll see it in the not so distant future with the way things are going. Likely a 15-20 year deal to kick payments out as far as possible and make it a future GM/owners problem. Good luck to the organization that tries to build a complete team around that historic contract!
