Excellent tutorial!
Thank you very much, its been a while back but still working 😜
Best tutorial for guns I ever saw !!!!!
Fantastic RCthx
Good work, best i've seen. Very realistic.
Great tutorial, I've used a similar technique with yellow and purple inks and finished with a metallic blue from the VMA range, it's a lovely effect :) However being a super geek I have to comment on the title as this effect actually usually occurs on superheated titanium, not iron :P Other than that I am sure a lot of painters will enjoy your awesome video :D
Very nice!!!
I was sitting here enjoying this great video. That got me to thinking about how this effect is on real metal. If you look at an exhaust on say a motorcycle, the blueing usually starts at the cylinder head which is the hottest area. When a gun is fired, the hottest area is going to be near the base and not at the tip of the barrel. But in the 40k universe, these barrels might be all blue due to the millions of rounds fired thru them. Still I very much enjoyed your video and technique. You do excellent work.
Vallego is a good paint. sells for a bit steeper at amazon than locally(for me anyway). they do not sell a burnt Iron so I will do a mix but with less violet as exhaust manifolds don't get that hot on Radials. cannons are constantly stressed and get hotter than piston engine manifolds.
This is awesome stuff bud
Exelent work, thankyou for sharing, must try this myself.
Nice work!

Awesome Dennis :) clearly explained and you showed the technique so well :) thanks for sharing
great video really clear with products thanks
Most amazing implementation of this effect that I have come across. Seems that you are not active any more. I just subscribed regardless
I am trying to find a way to paint the exhaust manifold(part #26 of kit 5264 Revell) in a Radial piston engine of a Stearman PT-17(kit is a Christmas Present from my parents) calls for "Burnt Iron" Model Master's sells the actual paint but it looks like a metallic grey, not really burnt iron. I also need a color for frame and motor mounts which, for some strange reason calls for "Interior Green". I use gun painting tutorials for both weapons and engine systems on space ships, airplane engines, and automobiles exhaust systems. I also have videos on another project the Planet of the Apes Starship "Icarus"(1968) this will come in handy for engine wear and weathering on that kit too! thanks!
wow i like your tecnhique man wow ...
Great tutorial Dennis!
Cool man!

awesome stuff Dennis thanks for sharing :) subbed :)
It's been a while, looks great. What so you use to seal it?
Most of the time a satain varnish
Thanks
@@Zarnowski_Sculpture Thank you 👍
Is the intensity of the colors correct? I really don't know, but it seems like it's too colorful.
if you look at images of heatedTitanium or crom and other steels. they are realy intens in colors. but this totorial just showes my way and interpretation of this effect. also its a miniature and when you play a game and see the mini on the table its not to bad if its a bit saturated... cheers
yeah, that is realistic, thanks man, great vid
I know this is old, but is there a newer, cheaper, alternative to the aero violet and cyan?
Yeah such a long time past since I did came upto with it.
You can use for sure any transport paint to achieve the same effect.
What color you use
Feels like cheating now haha. Great tip thanks for sharing!
what camera and lens did you use to make the video?
i used a canon legria hfr306
omg If you watch this video at 0.5 speed it sounds like a Rastafarian painting video
monkeyboy724 damn ur right! :)
Man, I want to try this, but I'm not sure my inner 5 year old will let me paint a gun barrel anything but *CHROME*.
ColonelSandersLite I know gun steal is normal black .but most tabletop guns are silver painted and why not show heatstain on them. You can use it also for any scale model exhaust pipe and heated metal. See it as inspiration and how to
Well, I'm painting a space hulk set, so I might give it a try on the assault cannon guy. I think maybe I'll even take it up to 11 and go for glowing red hot muzzles as well.
ColonelSandersLite yes that some awesome minis in that game. Only thing try to keep the use inks or transparent paints to color it. Have seen it often people use normal paint ant it looks opaque what really kills the effect for me when you can't see the metal under.
Thanks for the info.
Going off on a somewhat different tangent, you might find it worth knowing that, despite common belief not many real guns are black.
The old Com block firearms (SKS, AK family) tend to be hot blued to a near black, though more modern renditions tend to be parkerized. Western militaries moved away from bluing a very long time ago though. For example, the US military's 1911 pistol and 1903 rifles, as used in WW1 are blued, but the 1911 A1 and Garand rifles as used in WW2 are parkerized and should be a very slightly greenish grey color. The m-16/m-4 rifles have parkerized steel barrels with the aluminum upper and lower receivers anodized to match. For those rifles, Vallejo Model color neutral grey is a pretty close (but slightly too dark) match.
On the civilian market, blueing is really only still done for aesthetic reasons. The vast majority of modern firearms are parkerized, ceracoated, or stainless steel.
I applaud you for this, I am so using this technique for my Crimson Fists Dreadnaughts and assault cannons
Nice but doesn't Metal Master paints already make buffing type metalizer's ?
no idea have done this tutorial 3 years ago. so hmm
wow wow wow ...very nice tutorial !! thanks for sharing Dennis
Danke mein Freund!!!
Sehr schönes Video und klasse erklärt. Danke!
Frank B. Modelling bitte bitte.
Good video, might check out the badger patriot 105...
wish there was a way to do this without an airbrush, but it was very interesting...
I think with enough patience you can glase it with inks too. But I never tryed it. You should give it a go.
Nice video very intresting, good job👍👍👍👍
Thanks
Luckily i found this video...coz im just learning the trick on how to do this burnt iron effect...thanks man
Excellent tutorial. Very easy to understand. I'm hoping to replicate this on both guns of my Imperial Knight Titan =)
man this is awsome! maybe a little bit less of black.....and what do you think about drilling those holes for real?
Are the aero colors transparent , I'm going to try this out with my vallejo paints but I'm not sure weather to use the paints or the inks
some of them are almost transparent. you can try inks
with enough thinner (no water real thinner) vallejo works too
Im curious on why you used Devlan Mud instead of Badab Black?
What are the violet and blue paints I can't read the label
Schminke Aero Color Airbrush Paints
Great tutorial! I am going to try this one out! Thanks for sharing.
Great demo & a nice method Dennis. - cc
Thx
Thanks...now I have a clear picture 😊
Do you have any way of painting this effect without using an airbrush?
Thank you so much for putting this video up and explaining all the steps like you did. I will be using this technique in the near future to redo a lot of barrels that I have done in the past.
Great tutorial sir! This will come in very handy, thanks for sharing.
Wow! just discovered this video almost by accident! Really helpful video, and you just make it look sooooo easy! But I guess that's the secret with REAL craftsmen and very talented artists, isn't it...making it LOOK easy! Very fine work, my friend, and I shall be sure to click the subscribe button and to be checking out many more of your uploads.
Cheers,
Mark (in UK)

Can you use purple, orange, and red washes to replicate this effect?
Yes why not. 😜
Nice presentation, congratulations! :)
oh very nice!
I realize I got the same effect with a brush, and some washes, but your way is better, because the metal keeps its shine :)

Very nice tutorial on how you do this burnt iron effect. All my years in the USAF I never saw a GAU (F-4's, F-16's, and F-15's) turn those colors, but the Army may use a different gun. Thank you for sharing your technique.
Thanks so much, great tutorial
Solid paint job, great music choice, volume increases and decreases at appropriate times, cheers!
Definitely dig this, great looking effect and something I think that can easily be practiced, thanks for sharing this amazing tutorial. :)
Thank you Sir ;-)
No problem, thanks for sharing this tutorial, I've always just done black dry brush on the ends of my barrels and exhaust pipes, this is much more impressive :)
Love your voice mate, you sound like Arnold Schwarzenegger. GET TO DA CHOPPER!! You could do voice overs on TV!
