  • So I may have overreacted a little bit in the video, but
You pay for upgraded steel, and this is what you get. I wanted the Nitro v because I. Assumed, it would be a little better than the D2. The bad part is.I really love that blade so much so that I would almost buy another almost??? I know I sound cheap.Yes, because it is only sixty dollars, but where I come from and in my generation, sometimes money is hard to come by, even sixty dollars just saying!!! wow I don't know what to say about that knife, back in my days we used a small ax to split wood and chop wood and used knives to cut and skin things, but I am a old man and it is taking me some time to get use to seeing people split wood and chop wood with a knife.i am open minded about it, but just not a custom to it. a few years back when camping I seen a guy digging a hole with a knife ,that was a first for sure. times change it is all part of life. but I am going to stick to a small ax for wood splitting for now. thanks for sharing.

Wether the metal is formed into a knife or a prybar or an axe. If the thickness behind the spine and the temper support the work load...the metal should do the job.

Don't know why anyone would want to baton with such a small knife to begin with. Not exactly the designed use case for an EDC fixxer. If you're going to beat on a knife like that why not just buy a tried and true Esse Izula II with a no questions asked replacement warranty?

Nitro V can be a bit testy. If the heat gets up too high (above 1950° when quenching or 350° in temper) the toughness starts to drop like a stone. So if they didn't get it just right, as soon as the carbides dissolved, the grain structure size woupd've started increasing super fast, thus killing its tougness.

    • @SuperSteelSteve
      @SuperSteelSteve 25 днів тому +6

Ive made literally close to 600 knives in nitroV and that's 100% not true.
First tempering between 325°f -425°f INCREASES toughness.
Secondly higher austenitizing temps dissolve more carbide and INCREASE toughness.
What were seeing here is the blade geometry being too thin for the task.

So CBRx hrc tested a Kizer NitroV and it came out at 56. So are we looking at a super soft knife here which in theory should bend or over hard and break out's. Either way that is super bad and leaves me wondering about my Kizer baby I just got. I'm going to have to test it on some pine...gulp. It would have been good to see the watchman on the same bit of pine wood.

I need to do it for knife science sake. I do like the knife but honestly if it is going to perform the same, I would like to know now. Pine is my basic test for glinting. If it glints or bends on pine it fails the basic test and it's no better than 410 steel. Some Will glint on a knot but not break out like yours.

Ok so I have made a video on my test of the Kizer Baby on pine. I didn’t realise how much I dulled it cutting ham off the bone yesterday (I must have been running the blade up against bone). I still have my doubts on its performance though after the pine test. I’m sure it had a whole lot more glinting after the wood. So I’m going to have to sharpen it back up and run that test again. I have a sneaky suspicion that it might not be any tougher than other cheap Chinese steel, although on a pure cutting test it might perform better (grind and edge geometry might be a big factor there). Is this Kizer turning out to be a performance scam? ua-cam.com/video/iM6cVgEgf2g/v-deo.htmlsi=NMXhMGJkOuCG4cr3

    • @cristianfuentes69

That's why I don't buy some expensive Chinese brands (compared to cheaper ones) I would definitely never trust the Chinese industry, you never know when they're going to screw you... that's the harsh reality, except for exceptions like Sanrenmu and its subsidiaries Ruike, Land and SRM in addition to another big company which is Ganzo Fire Bird... another maybe are Sitivien and Eafengrow subsidiaries of Kesiwo... and I've also seen a common denominator of where they are produced (Chinese Provinces) Guangdong, Yangyian, Janjian or something like that... one of those last two produces the counterfeits and poor quality steels (3cr13) with only 0.26-0.35 of Carbon, this is the steel most used by them... it would be great to nitrogenize it to market it as premium steel, right? lol ... what a sinister idea Michael

I really don't believe all these people complaining about a test. If someone sells a knife in a steel that cost more then cheap 420 it should be able to preform a few tasks.
Yes a ax to split wood is how everyone splits wood unless you don't have your ax. I can absolutely 💯 bet my coldsteel voyager can baton. Loads of videos people testing the blade.
I have a 3in hultafors ok4 that is advertised as able to baton. A $20 knife of sk5. NitroV is supposed to be as tough as 14c28n almost an tougher then magnacut.
Id say any knife should be able to baton pine or i don't have any use for it.

Hi, that shouldn't surprise you, I also review knives and many are Chinese, and I can assure you that paying more does not guarantee success, Chinese brands that I trust are very few and not necessarily expensive such as Two Sun, Petrified Fish, Trivisa and your Kizer... Real Steel is a great brand as is Sanrenmu = Ruike, SRM and Land and Ganzo... And Batoneado with 10USD knives in AISI420 steels or equivalent (3cr13 the softest close to AISI410) 4cr13, 4cr15 in Chinese version without problems dry wood (with knots) of Eucalyptus which is quite a bit harder than Pine... You should ask yourself, are there Steels for Batoneado and others for work? N = Nitrogenized like Sandvick 14c28N is a mediocre steel taken to the extreme with Nitrogenization, the same as all the others (it's just marketing) the difference is that Sandvick is Swedish... the question is, what is the limit? ...and what company makes a knife with the steel that says? ...that steel crystallized with nitrogen (thousands of things could have happened) and every day I love 440C more... greetings from Chile

@ I had bad experiences with 1095 in Esee 4, great discussion with Jeff Randall via Mail... but I also think it is a good heat treated steel, like Schrade does maybe.
I managed to make my first knife with recycled 5160 and a brick oven (that I made) with charcoal... everything is fine so far, I just need to control the temperature more next time (don't overdo it)...
For batonig I would use a 1095, 1075 or 5160 without a doubt... but the basic AISI420 doesn't do so bad (it has less elasticity than a high carbon) but well hardened it becomes a Buck, Gerber or even a Boker... that's how they have sold us this basic steel for years, but the brand behind it is worth more.

Nitro v has very high toughness when heat treated properly. Look up knife steel nerd (creator of magnacut) steel ratings. This is either a bad heat treat or "edge burn" from getting too hot when it was ground.

chinese treated nitro-v is just booty cheeks no matter which oem it comes from....I actually just did some mod work on the new Kizer Hawk in s45....and it was THE softest steel I have ever worked with....by far

Wow Kizer not only the heat treatment is absolutely rubbish also it’s not even sharp enough to strike a fire steel … what a piece of crap
Will certainly reconsider next Kizer purchases, certainly not for anything outdoors

WOW, catastrophic failure. I can't believe that! Looked like a great piece, just proves looks don't mean everything. Take care and have a great blessed day.

Maybe you caught the one dud in that run of blades? It still doesnt instill a great deal of trust in the brand. Im glad i found this video before i added a kizer to my "oh crap" bag.

Thats crazy! I'd think it's more than likely a heat treat issue. PINE!?! No way!

Wow! Big failure! Glad I didn't buy that knife, because I was going to! Instead I got the cold steel 4 max scout! And it's an absolute tank of a knife! I very, very highly recommend it!!!
