- So I may have overreacted a little bit in the video, but
You pay for upgraded steel, and this is what you get. I wanted the Nitro v because I. Assumed, it would be a little better than the D2. The bad part is.I really love that blade so much so that I would almost buy another almost??? I know I sound cheap.Yes, because it is only sixty dollars, but where I come from and in my generation, sometimes money is hard to come by, even sixty dollars just saying!!! Thanks for watching!!🗡⚔️🔪🪓🔥

wow I don't know what to say about that knife, back in my days we used a small ax to split wood and chop wood and used knives to cut and skin things, but I am a old man and it is taking me some time to get use to seeing people split wood and chop wood with a knife.i am open minded about it, but just not a custom to it. a few years back when camping I seen a guy digging a hole with a knife ,that was a first for sure. times change it is all part of life. but I am going to stick to a small ax for wood splitting for now. thanks for sharing.
I can totally understand that! Thanks for the comment!! 🗡⚔️🔪🪓🔥
A hatchet is a lifesaver.
If all you have is a knife, it may be pressed into duty making kindling and tinder. Never say never.
Wether the metal is formed into a knife or a prybar or an axe. If the thickness behind the spine and the temper support the work load...the metal should do the job.
Yep, times change. One huge change I see daly is common sense seems less and less common.
Sad and confusing times we live in .
KnifeMaker
Frozen black knot in that wood. I am not surprised at all. That is too fine of an edge to be batoning frozen firewood. That knife is made for skinning.
You hit a fatwood knot. Fatwood is stupid dense and hard. I’ve had fatwood break the bit on a hatchet and tomahawk.
The issue isn't the knife or heat treat. it is what is between the ears of the tester. What a
DA thing to do with a slicy blade. Pure ignorance of how, when, what tool to use for a job.
Tester is a total fail!

Just grind it and sharpen where it chipped and it will be good. Probably even better shape. Thank you for saving me $70 though. I was almost ready to pull trigger.
I wonder what that Watchman would do. I just have ni heart to test mine 😂
Don't know why anyone would want to baton with such a small knife to begin with. Not exactly the designed use case for an EDC fixxer. If you're going to beat on a knife like that why not just buy a tried and true Esse Izula II with a no questions asked replacement warranty?
You obviously have no idea about how many people in hard work professions use their knives as tools, including pry bars. Of course that is not normal use, but I have never seen a knife fail like this during tests.
The ability to make a fire is on top of the duties I ask of my EDC fixer. A fire will save your life. I carry a White River Firecraft 3.5 in Magnacut and have batoned through a few knots with it.
@ What? When are you expecting to only have an EDC fixed blade on you and needing to make a fire to survive? Ever heard of a go bag?
@cylentone It’s for all the circumstances when you lack the foresight to expect taking a go bag with you. Ever had a dream where you find yourself pant-less in a public place? That has thought me to always check if I am wearing pants before I leave the house.
@cylentone Thanks for the snark mate. Name me one "professional" that needs to baton with a knife that has less than three inches of cutting edge.
Nitro V is tougher than Magnacut, showing again that heat treat and geometry matters more. That knife sure is priced right.
Meanwhile, my $35 14C28N knife is still going after 3 years of solid abuse. Not a single issue.
@@AlphaMachina 14C28N is some good stuff it really is!!! Thanks for watching and the comment!!!

Let me guess... Morakniv? 😂
Which knife is that ?
@@FU2Crew2FU2 it's a Civivi something or other. Got it off Amazon a few years ago.
I have a Begleiter fixed, it is D2, it has no problem with batoning. And I really used that small thing a lot.
Nitro V can be a bit testy. If the heat gets up too high (above 1950° when quenching or 350° in temper) the toughness starts to drop like a stone. So if they didn't get it just right, as soon as the carbides dissolved, the grain structure size woupd've started increasing super fast, thus killing its tougness.
Ive made literally close to 600 knives in nitroV and that's 100% not true.
First tempering between 325°f -425°f INCREASES toughness.
Secondly higher austenitizing temps dissolve more carbide and INCREASE toughness.
What were seeing here is the blade geometry being too thin for the task.
@ Yes sir! exactly why I said Common sense seems more and more less common. Where wishful fantasy takes president over reality.
You and I , no doubt can see the profile and grind of the knife is not a thick heavy use tool. Wrong tool for the job, and now a poster making up fantasy heat treat simply because he imagines it to be so. Reality notwithstanding.
KnifeMaker/Retired after over 47+ Years in the Craft and in association with the Original R.W. (Bob) Loveless/Jim Merritt Custom Knife Shop
They come out with all these fancy steels but it’s just hard to beat a good heat treated 01 steel knife
I think you want a thicker blade with a Scandi or Hollow grind for batoning frozen wood knots. That blade looks too thin for what you are trying to do.
I just realized I said Scandi or Hollow. I was thinking convex grind not hollow...
So yeah. Scandi grind or convex grind for bushcraft stuff like batoning.
If you have the Izula it’d be cool to see it go through that same knot. See how the Esee handles it
Wow, wouldn’t want to have to depend on that! On a much higher note those are some nice serrations😂

I imagine Jeff Randall is shaking his head. These knives may look like an Izula/Izula 2, but alas…
That should stop right up
My izula 2 hasn't failed me at all, worth spending the money on real .
@@slowtaknow i'm sure you are right on that one!!! I love all of my Esee knives!!!
Hell yeah got some serrations now🤣
You should drive it into the stump about an inch and a half and see how easy it snaps.
this why I watch JoeX and I wont spend over 40$ on a knife , those 15$ Mora seem nice
Joe X doesn't test the knives he destroyed them to show how great he is but that didn't make him hero and famous.
Everybody can broke and after that destroy the knife!!!
@@irenastoyanova2790 I don't think you understand the point I am making , the cost of these knives are way to high imo , things I have found out over time, I am just too practical to want to be technical I guess is what I am trying to say
So CBRx hrc tested a Kizer NitroV and it came out at 56. So are we looking at a super soft knife here which in theory should bend or over hard and break out's. Either way that is super bad and leaves me wondering about my Kizer baby I just got. I'm going to have to test it on some pine...gulp. It would have been good to see the watchman on the same bit of pine wood.
@michaelwaldeck7081 I'm really not sure if that is a good idea, if you really like the blade. And I remember you commenting on the first video talking about the
heat treatment being at a 56. So we will see what kizer will do. I did email them tonight!!! I went to kizer's website and emailed them through the service department.
I need to do it for knife science sake. I do like the knife but honestly if it is going to perform the same, I would like to know now. Pine is my basic test for glinting. If it glints or bends on pine it fails the basic test and it's no better than 410 steel. Some Will glint on a knot but not break out like yours.
@@michaelwaldeck7081 True 👍
Ok so I have made a video on my test of the Kizer Baby on pine. I didn’t realise how much I dulled it cutting ham off the bone yesterday (I must have been running the blade up against bone). I still have my doubts on its performance though after the pine test. I’m sure it had a whole lot more glinting after the wood. So I’m going to have to sharpen it back up and run that test again. I have a sneaky suspicion that it might not be any tougher than other cheap Chinese steel, although on a pure cutting test it might perform better (grind and edge geometry might be a big factor there). Is this Kizer turning out to be a performance scam? ua-cam.com/video/iM6cVgEgf2g/v-deo.htmlsi=NMXhMGJkOuCG4cr3
That's why I don't buy some expensive Chinese brands (compared to cheaper ones) I would definitely never trust the Chinese industry, you never know when they're going to screw you... that's the harsh reality, except for exceptions like Sanrenmu and its subsidiaries Ruike, Land and SRM in addition to another big company which is Ganzo Fire Bird... another maybe are Sitivien and Eafengrow subsidiaries of Kesiwo... and I've also seen a common denominator of where they are produced (Chinese Provinces) Guangdong, Yangyian, Janjian or something like that... one of those last two produces the counterfeits and poor quality steels (3cr13) with only 0.26-0.35 of Carbon, this is the steel most used by them... it would be great to nitrogenize it to market it as premium steel, right? lol ... what a sinister idea Michael
Good to know. Thanks for the video.
I really don't believe all these people complaining about a test. If someone sells a knife in a steel that cost more then cheap 420 it should be able to preform a few tasks.
Yes a ax to split wood is how everyone splits wood unless you don't have your ax. I can absolutely 💯 bet my coldsteel voyager can baton. Loads of videos people testing the blade.
I have a 3in hultafors ok4 that is advertised as able to baton. A $20 knife of sk5. NitroV is supposed to be as tough as 14c28n almost an tougher then magnacut.
Id say any knife should be able to baton pine or i don't have any use for it.
I promise i will cut something tougher then pine.
It seems some people just like to complain but lack critical thinking. Guess that how the country got the last idiot.
You make a lot of good points!!! 🗡⚔️🔪🪓🔥 Thanks for watching and the comment!!!!
Nitro v has a high toughness. No way this should have happened. Either a bad heat treat or edge is burnt.

@@ChandlersLegacyFarm This is really bad.
I have battoned mine and it hasn't had a chip or roll yet.... very strange that Hare! Maybe it the heat treatment is bad on that knife?? Hope kizer refunds you. Kizer Hare does not have a sharp spine, mine neither l, I had to sharpen the back of it.
Frozen wood can be a real challenge for a knife or an smaller axe. Ive seen several edges chip. But, not beyond being able to sharpen it out.
Bonjour monsieur!!!Ce couteau n a pas un.probleme d acier.Les aciers industriel en 2025 sont très bons.Vue comment le tranchant c est brisé c est juste une question de traitement thermique qui est trio dur.. Hi, that shouldn't surprise you, I also review knives and many are Chinese, and I can assure you that paying more does not guarantee success, Chinese brands that I trust are very few and not necessarily expensive such as Two Sun, Petrified Fish, Trivisa and your Kizer... Real Steel is a great brand as is Sanrenmu = Ruike, SRM and Land and Ganzo... And Batoneado with 10USD knives in AISI420 steels or equivalent (3cr13 the softest close to AISI410) 4cr13, 4cr15 in Chinese version without problems dry wood (with knots) of Eucalyptus which is quite a bit harder than Pine... You should ask yourself, are there Steels for Batoneado and others for work? N = Nitrogenized like Sandvick 14c28N is a mediocre steel taken to the extreme with Nitrogenization, the same as all the others (it's just marketing) the difference is that Sandvick is Swedish... the question is, what is the limit? ...and what company makes a knife with the steel that says? ...that steel crystallized with nitrogen (thousands of things could have happened) and every day I love 440C more... greetings from Chile
You've given me a lot to think about! 👍 Thanks for watching!
@ I had bad experiences with 1095 in Esee 4, great discussion with Jeff Randall via Mail... but I also think it is a good heat treated steel, like Schrade does maybe.
I managed to make my first knife with recycled 5160 and a brick oven (that I made) with charcoal... everything is fine so far, I just need to control the temperature more next time (don't overdo it)...
For batonig I would use a 1095, 1075 or 5160 without a doubt... but the basic AISI420 doesn't do so bad (it has less elasticity than a high carbon) but well hardened it becomes a Buck, Gerber or even a Boker... that's how they have sold us this basic steel for years, but the brand behind it is worth more.

Bad Heat Treat, Ya got a lemon. sory about the knife.
The knife is made for men women.
RiP kizer hare
Wide blades isn't the best geometry for batoning.
Only if the blade is thin. A nice thick wide blade will wedge and split the wood. I also like it to be thick behind the edge so it can power through knots.
Ha. Well that tells me all I needed to know about Kizer. Thanks sir
I dont no wat 2 say except my 4 yr. Old 20 $ mora 510 is still kickin ass ...😅😅
The Kizzer Hare is not bushcraft knife and the Nitro-V steel is not so tough.
Nitro v has very high toughness when heat treated properly. Look up knife steel nerd (creator of magnacut) steel ratings. This is either a bad heat treat or "edge burn" from getting too hot when it was ground.
chinese treated nitro-v is just booty cheeks no matter which oem it comes from....I actually just did some mod work on the new Kizer Hawk in s45....and it was THE softest steel I have ever worked with....by far
Wow Kizer not only the heat treatment is absolutely rubbish also it’s not even sharp enough to strike a fire steel … what a piece of crap
Will certainly reconsider next Kizer purchases, certainly not for anything outdoors
